  4. Okay, finally chipping in. Watched on GolTV Spain and the commentator was Spanish, unlike the majority of their GC announcers who are Latin American. Amazingly knowledgeable about some things, even started talking about CPL, described Forge, asked what sort of player might CPL provide to a NT set-up. So knew that, but had to check his sheet on Piette and did not grasp his Spain career. Well I was very pleased overall. And irate about that ref for the entire match. He screwed us. Or they did, including VAR. It was as if he'd decided beforehand what would happen. You absolutely have to get into a ref's face when he's playing 12th man for the gringos. Comparing to where I was not convinced last outing, Miller was really sharp, going forwards but also handling Dike most of the match--his one header when he got free there was a mix-up and someone too short was on him, maybe Richie. Vitoria as well, really bossed it. Thought Osorio coming on was a plus. Was happy with Tajon's performance, and Larin. Piette was very good and has some things that are very positive for our team. Liked Cav. Think if they'd given us the proper added time, say 7-8, we could have made a better run of it. Being one goal from winning the group was a great proposition and we needed some breaks, a free kick, but we were never going to get it with this ref and them lying deep. Their best players were Sands, Vine and that other CB, forget his name. True, since they could sit back they did, so we were not pressured up high. We played out and smoothly, with nice changes, passing accuracy and even the backs or mids pushing into space when we had it. I am not sure what we were missing to score, but I think if Larin and Ayo had been able to be together for 70 m we would have gotten one by then. Then the US would have had to push and it could have been a different game for 20 minutes. Really the only players I would not rate are Fraser, mostly because he was uninvolved for long stretches, and Pasher, who was not ready for what was being asked of him. Fair enough, first time out, cut him some slack.

    Anthony Jackson-Hamel

Wow that really sucks. There was a point in time where I thought Anthony Jackson-Hamel would at the very least become an impact player at the MLS level. Him and Jordan Hamilton have always flashed at the MLS level, but never fully broke through (and were dominant at the level below). I'd imagine he has an alternative to the sport, because at the very least he could be a star in the CPL (in the mould of a better Anthony Novak). Congrats on a solid career, and good luck on your next move AJH!

  8. Brym is currently on trial with Excelsior Rotterdam of the Eerste Divisie. https://www.voetbalrotterdam.nl/2021/07/excelsior-test-jonge-franse-talenten/ Google Translation from Dutch: The observant viewer had already seen it on Saturday's livestream: Excelsior Rotterdam currently has two players on trial. Charles-Andreas Brym (22) is a French-born striker with Canadian nationality. He played three international matches for Canada and last season played for Belgian Royal Excel Mouscron. The French Modeste Duku (20) is an attacking midfielder from Olympique Lyon. Technical director Nick Kersten: "We wanted to see both talented football players at work here in peace. That is why we are only now communicating about these players. They trained with us last week and both played a half against Willem II. It will be determined next week whether one or both boys will definitely join Excelsior Rotterdam.''

  9. Overall quite pleased with our performance. Let's remember these teams are going to look a lot different in the fall. Definitely missed David & Davies up top, although we had a lot more shots not too many clear cut chances that Davies & David can generate. Slow start but also a terrible missed pk call in the first half. We deserved more in this game but it is what it is. I was impressed with how they boys did in the final 60 minutes. Let's also not forget that we were missing both Atiba & Arfield* in the middle. Eustaquio out suspended. That's probably our best 3 midfielders. We also rested probably our 4th and 5th best midfielders to start in Osorio & Kaye. Crepeau - I thought he was as good as can be expected. Not a save to be made but did well in all other aspects of the game. Vitoria - Was fantastic. Completely different player today than last game and his lack of speed did not get exposed with USA speedy attackers. Also loved seeing him really emotional speak in the huddle after the game. He seems to have really taken a strong leadership role this tournament. Miller - Looked very poor to start but I thought he did much better as the game progressed. On the ball is still a concern. I still expect Kennedy to be starting there come the fall. Johnston - I thought it wasn't his best game but again became much better as the game progressed. Lacks the attacking part of the game but enjoy him on the outside of a back 3 quite well. Fraser - Absolutely terrible in the first half but looked good in the 2nd half. I don't see him being involved too much in this program in the future with the depth of our midfield. Piette - I thought he was okay to start and grew as the game went along. He has something different about him that none of our other midfielders do and I like that a lot about him. Junior - I thought he was our best player for most of the game. He really struggles to ever get a full 90 minutes but pulling him today was a bit harsh. A lot came through him in the middle today. Tajon - Another fantastic performance. Gonna have to find room for him in the starting lineup or else he is going to be absolutely unstoppable coming off the bench late in games. Laryea - He was okay. One of his better performances this season for club and country but still hasn't seemed to regain his form. Definitely a pk on the one tackle but he needs to stop looking so much for the fouls in my opinion. Larin - I thought he was very good again and its too bad he got injured at the time he did. I would have liked to see him play when we really pushed in the final part of the game. Akinola - Looked fairly good before his injury. Hopefully it's nothing serious. Osorio - Completely changed the game when he came on. Thought it was one of his better games this year. Cavallini - Pretty good in his short appearance. I will never bet on him getting a breakaway though. Kaye - Very happy with his performance today as well. He needed that after last game. Pasher - I thought he was decent. He can definitely keep his own with this group of players.

  10. I'm not really worried about our individual defenders. The real cause for concern is our slow starts. We are getting a reputation of letting in cheap early goals. That will be devastating if it happens in WCQ. Teams will just park the bus afterwards. This is the #1 issue we need to be working on.

  11. Agree with all of this, and I too was watching on Fox and only read this game thread afterwards, and had the same surprised reaction at people seemingly wanting to burn an effigy of both Miller & Fraser in particular (both of whom are not likely starters for us when everyone is available, it needs to be said). I'm not sure that I agree with Fraser getting the highest marks per the MLS website player ratings or as Kristian Jack was saying post-match, but neither did I want his head on a platter the way some of the posts here were suggesting. I didn't actually see much cause for hatred towards anyone in a white jersey in this match, and I was pleasantly surprised by the back three & Vitoria holding his own at his age on 2 days rest after such a mediocre outing. It showed to me that we can raise our game because I thought overall we looked better in this game than against lesser opposition. We need to continue to play more of these teams, so whoever we play next round, it will be a big test for us as we need to prove we can beat a team we aren't favoured against in this tourney/meaningful match (which only has happened once in recent years, at home against the US in 2019). But the upward trajectory seems clear.

  12. miller is the kind of player we need in there to neutralize a guy like dike. he's got the speed advantage and the strength to battle with him for 90. i thought he handled him incredibly well today.

  15. Let me add one more thing before I shake this one off and move on. In a game such as this where getting to the goal is real tough, you really notice how few players we have with any confidence or danger in their shot from distance. Over the past 5 years or so it's really only been Junior and Arfield who have shown they can be a threat from outside the 18, though maybe guys like Eustaquio and Buchanan can be added to the list. For as dangerous as guys like Larin, David, Davies and Cavallini are if you can keep them outside the 18 you're pretty much guaranteed they won't shoot or if they do it's likely to be weak sauce. Then among our midfield you also won't ever really find Osorio, Kaye, Piette or Hutchinson having a meaningful crack at the ball. Contrast that to some of what you see with Honduras/Panama/Mexico and it seems like everyone on the field is equipped with the confidence to have a meaningful go and see what happens if better options don't present themselves.

  16. Hard to be happy after a loss, but we controlled play for about the last 60min, the only goal was a brain fart before I even sat down on the couch, and we ended up losing 1-0 to the class of CONCACAF in their home building. I cant say I am dissapointed in any of the guys. A more generous call on a couple incidents in the box and we would have had our tie on the road. From the thrashing Piette and Fraser were getting in here, you would have thought we were down 4-0. Our much maligned defense was not the problem (DIke did shit all game, thank you Mr Miller), our depleted midfield was ok (Busio did shit), they just sat back, absorbed pressure and we couldnt knock one in...because this wasnt Suriname or Turks and Caicos. Overall a very good showing, the wheels didnt fall off without Borjan, David, Davies, Arfield and Hutch. Miller, Johnston, Pasher, Buchanon, Ayo (newbies to CMNT) will sock this away in the memory banks, this is a road game against the best in CONCAAF...so now you know what you are in for. Learn from this and do a bit better in the fall, or when we play Mexico in a week or so. The fox guys were not happy about the way the game was going at all, and were slanted to the USA, but were professional and not excited so I guess thats what people like??? Homer commentary in a bored golf announcer voice??

If we brought in a replacement for Akinola, calling in Bustos would be a bit of a gamble (but would love to give him a chance). Think it would more likely be Tesho as a known quantity. Edit: I still think we need to use those we called into the squad and see how they do. So before Akinola’s replacement gets it, we should start Corbeanu.

  19. People like to say he's limited because he doesn't have fancy footwork or good offensive instincts, but he's pretty damn effective. The ball winning ability is a skill that goes under appreciated. I am sure happy he's in our squad. Already on 56 caps at the age of 26. He's going to break the caps record for Canada eventually.

  20. I like the Gold Cup.. I've got no problems. I just would like to see a few more teams raise their level (which i think is happening) I would go to every 4 years and alternate with an America's Super Cup.. 20 teams, 4 groups of 5.. top 2 each group. 10 Conmebol, 10 Concacaf
    5 points
  21. The problem is that the vast majority of CONCACAF is actively hostile to anybody else holding it. Revenue is partially shared and the US makes all the minnows the most money. That and the fact that most CONCACAF nations have a relatively large and well-off fanbase in the US. El Salvador will draw more fans in DC than in San Salvador.

  22. I wouldn't say I am as negative as @Ruud, but I am not far off it. I havr had a few hours to digest now and I am still as disappointed as I was at the final whistle, if not a little pissed off. In the grande scheme of things, it doesn't really matter because Costa Rica or Jamaica is 6 in one half dozen in the other. However, what I find upsetting is that we didn't get the result, again. Yes we controlled the game for 75 minutes, but that kinda makes it worse that we didn't equalize. We didn't even threaten to equalize really, save for the curling effort from Buchanan. If we were testing the keeper or hitting the post, crossbar, then I can live with not getting the result, but we didn't test Turner. Credit to the American defense and all that, of course, but we gotta be disappointed, I think. At least I am.

  23. You're just a full of positivity. Eustaquio will be back. Hopefully Larin is back and plays a full 90. We should have had at least the draw and we didn't play our best. I expect us to rise to the occasion in a tougher quarter final and we will have a decent chance against either Costa Rica or Jamaica.

  24. agreed. I absolutely hate this 5-3-2 formation because as you said, we don't have good cb's. So it either your wingbacks are to pushed up and leave the back 3 isolated with a lot of space to be exposed, or our wingbacks stay back defending and making it difficult to go forward with no width. This formation is only useful if you have good cb's and we don't have that. The game changed completely when we went to a 4-4-2 formation. I really hope herdman sees this and just sticks with this formation from now on, if we continue to go with 5 at the back i think we will continue to be exposed when going up against good teams.

  25. It was the more subtle homerism. The Dan cole method, you remember... it would be deep into the 2nd period before you realized that the Habs werent playing the game by themselves. Lafleur with an excellent rush, Belevieu is skating magnifcently, what a great block by Robinson, big save Dryden, Tremblay and Gainey are working so hard out there. Oh and the score is 2-0 for the black hawks.

Partial tears are very rare and require the removal of the ligament for athletes anyways. ACLs aren't regenerative, so a partial tear is a time bomb. In most non-contact ACL tears, the ACL is the only thing to pop. This is because the tears aren't caused strictly by severe hyperextension as much as it is by a moment of high torque. The joint will swell quickly (that's what the dreaded ACL test is feeling for), but there isn't major structural damage and the leg can still function in a limited capacity. If the knee continues to torque past the point of the ACL tear, you tear your meniscus next, then MCL/LCL depending on the direction of the twist, then PCL...past that your leg is being held together by skin and hamstring. The further down that list you go the more pain and inability to walk. Generally the 'twist' that caused these injuries are quite noticeable.

  29. To use a hockey analogy, you know you don't need to cover the point shot if the guy at the point isn't a real threat to shoot. So you collapse down low, clog up the front of the net and choke out the offense. Having a blast from the point (beyond the 18) keeps defenders honest and stretches them out opening up seams down low.

  37. Both "expected goals" and "key passes" are stats that I'm extremely skeptical of and personally place very little stock in, my guess is that these stats likely compiled by statisticians who have never played the game. For example, when Larin is shaping up to shoot from the top of the box and the centre of the goal but doesn't get the shot off because he is fouled from behind & it's not called, do they factor that into "expected goals"? And if so, how so, and if not, why not? I would have liked more scoring chances from Canada & for us to put one away but the suggestion that the US created more chances to score overall is difficult to take seriously, they pretty much scored on their own chance created in the game.

  38. If you watch the replay of the first goal, 5 of our back 7 were "culpable" for that goal. We had both our mids close around the ball carrier. Fraser got deeked out and Piette did not win his tackle. Vitoria was ball watching leaving Johnston to mark Dike and Zardes. Laryea was in la la land having a stroll in a more central area and leaving his man completely open on the right flank who got the pass. Johnston then had to scramble out wide, an impossible task, the cross came in. Tajon should have been closer to his man and more goal side for sure, but the goal was a defensive team breakdown by at least 5 players. If anyone should wear the goat horns on that goal it probably should be Laryea.

  39. Sometimes a picture says a 1000's words. Don't forget the other one 5 mins later when Larin got mauled and thus couldn't get the shot off because he was being pulled back. I hate complaining and yes time to move one, but these screen grab pics from my TV are wild, both clearly in the 18.

  40. Can someone explain this too me please. We’re down by 1, we need someone that is dynamic cocky wants the ball someone with a lot of skill, someone that will have a go. Herdman brings in pasher, ( he played well but not the player you need). Maybe I missed in the past posts, but haven’t seen anyone talk about him. Did everyone forget … we have a young dynamic cocky premiership calibre player in the making sitting on the fucking bench! Who has basically scored every time he comes on. Everyone knows where’s Waldo well…. Where’s Theo Corbeanu??????

  41. I personally thought Miller had an exceptional match. I was watching on Fox and didn't come on here until after the match ended was surprised at all the hate for him early on. I think he is a great option behind Kennedy going forward. I also a little surprised at the negativity of some of the posters here. We played the #2 side in Concacaf off the park in their home park and that was after going down 1-0 on a brain fart the first 20 seconds which could have caused a lesser side to collapse. We lost 2 players to injury up front in the process. And we were missing 5 to 6 regulars who were are best players plus some other players like Millar and Adekugbe who could have seen the pitch. Sure, they had a B- side but our B+ side was much better. That bodes well for the future. Yes, we didn't score and we need to improve in the final third to a quality team bunkering; and we need to not switch off like we did on comedy of errors. But on most other days, we tie or win this match. That is progress. All that being said, wouldn't a Flores or Dias look good in the hole behind the strikers? We really could use a creative no. 10 who could open defenses. With Davies on the left and Buchanan on the right and David and Larin in the middle, that is the piece we are really still missing. Hopefully, those two guys see that as with them on board in the next year or two once they develop some more, that would make a big difference.

  42. I know some are taking the positives from this, but it's high time we must expect better, so here goes: We are putting stock on the fact we outshot them, out posessed them, and outplayed them, but we lost. We conceeded early (again). Credit to the team not crumbling like down in Orlando, I guess. We need to turn these loses to draws at least, if not wins. The talent is there but the results need to come. WCQ is around the corner and winning on the stat sheet won't get us to Qatar. This isn't boxing, as KJ said. Comments on some players: - Was not impressed with Pasher. Didn't seem on the same page and had a loose touch which turned over posession and released some pressure off them. I know it's just one play, but you're coming on to make a positive difference, not a negative one. - Was happy with the backline as a whole. - Tajon lost his mark on the goal. Needs to be dialed in defensively, because that lack of concentration cost us the group today. - Piette was good. Still behind Eustaquio but nice to see him step up. Was the best of the midfielders today. - Crepeau is better with his feet than Borjan.

  44. Unfortunately as good as Tajon was, it was he who was sleeping on the GWG. Game reminded me a bit of the Euro Cup final with the inferior team scoring first and then getting dominated after the first 20 minutes, only this time the good guys didn't win in the end (in large part because the officials wouldn't let us with that horse-manure refereeing). Thankfully we were already through since it would have been extremely annoying to have been eliminated in such a fashion.

  47. I think before he got hurt, Larin was our best player I can't really complain about any player of ours. Pwople are hating Piette? I thought he was great and I think from 30mins on we eat them alive every time they tried to work thru our midfield I liked Hoilett in the middle.. he held possession and made some great turns in tight space
