    Ayo Akinola

I'd start Ayo as the motivation is clear as day and every moment the US players on the field and the knowing fans in the stands see him, is a modest middle finger at their entire programe. Lucas and Larin did not hook up well at all last match, I wonder if Ayo could do better with Cyle. I also like putting Laryea and Larin on the pitch together, since they are school buddies, they inspire each other. And Larin also feeds on the mistreatment he got from MLS and the entire Orlando organisation. I'd also start Hoillet. I like the idea of having technical, more attacking players, in the middle. Hoillet knows how to defend if he is called to. Besides, he is without a club, he needs a strong performance against a stronger rival. Tajon has also shown a much better attitude coming back. As long as the technical mids know they have to support the back line, we are set. After that MLS video with the pundit slagging Piette, gotta start Piette. Use all the negatives and criticisms against certain players, our defensive set-up, to our favour. We'll get forward when we can, as long as we can keep things tied for half an hour, we'll start to see chances for ourselves.

  3. I've been questioning Herdman's use of Johnston since the 2nd Haiti game. He's been good in back 3's, but he just doesn't offer much as a wing back. I'm a little confused as to why JH is so insistent on inserting him into his 11's out of position.

  5. Geez I haven't posted on this forum for ages. Nice to be back. Despite yesterday's 4-1 win, I thought it was close to the worst performance in Herdman era. Our boys were generally slow, disorganized and lacked concentration and motivation. - The amount of giveaways were staggering. - Kaye is not having a great Gold Cup. I miss the Arfield-Piette duo, they were pretty good with transition. - We all knew this, but our CB will get torn apart with better opposition. I already miss Kennedy. Replacing Piette for Eustaquio might be a good thing vs. the US. - Not sure Cavallini + Larin works (despite Larin's 2 goals). On a final note. It's good to finally bitch about games we win.

So if three years ago your bosses tried to screw you over, binding you to an inferior deal and halting your career growth, forcing you to straight out defy the contract and challenge them to take it on legally, you would not remember? Footballers are not necessarily great minds, but I have never met any footballer who did not remember a club or coach that treated them unfairly.

I’m pretty sure there’s more to it than comparing Liga mx vs Süper Lig or what ever 11-20 ranked league in Europe. I would want Larin and Hutch at Bestikas over any club in Mexico but I think I would choose a team Iike Club America over a team like Kayserispor. Anyways, every player and situation is unique and what I think is important is that the player is being challenged and playing at their highest level. Someone in Liga MX would still be a very useful CMNT player and until we out grow that we should still want players playing in Mexico.

  9. Yes. Seriously. Why not? We tend to do this already to an extent. https://www.canada.ca/en/public-health/services/diseases/flu-influenza/influenza-surveillance.html We don't/won't have the total number of infected like for COVID, but we can at least record the number of people that need to go to hospital or die from the flu and have that data easily accessible. We also record data and publish it for other diseases above the historical baseline. West Nile virus for example. Sometimes if there are a cluster of cases in an area it makes the news. https://www.canada.ca/en/public-health/services/diseases/west-nile-virus/surveillance-west-nile-virus.html Governments are much better at collecting data (scientists and civil servants) than they are at acting on it ( elected politicians ). Let the government continue to do what it does best; collecting data. Attack bad public policy measures if you think the government isn't doing the right thing based on the data collected, but attacking the collection of data that informs us all is an exercise fraught with peril.

  13. How do you go from the youngest CMNT starting GK, while training with the Juventus first team to this? What a disappointing fall. He must have a shit agent or zero confidence in his ability. You'd think he could come to the CPL team or a Scandinavian type league and get at least get a pro contract . Non-professional football though? Close the thread, he's now essentially a Sunday League player like many of us. Reminds me of Josh Doughty just throwing in the towel after ManUtd. There is a solid foundation there, why give up? Once again, its a reminder that major academies don't mean much at all. Nothing but brand hype.

    Stephen Eustaquio

He doesn't have the Davies/David flash factor, but I always believedthat Eustaquio would single handedly bring some stability to that Canadian midfield, and have as big an impact on the team. So far he is doing that, and more. Not only is he a work horse, he is a very good footballer, comfortable with the ball, hell of a first touch, and reads the game very well. It seems the rest of the locked room seems to genuinely like the guy as well.

  15. There is a risk of that, but in my opinion it would be stupid. If you don't want people doing this, fix your stupid rules!!! Would you rather he have gone in for a bad slide tackle? Or let a guy go past him and grab his jersey? I think it should be at least 3 yellows for accumulation. Why would the suspension be just as bad for getting 2 yellows in a span of 4 games as it is for getting 2 yellows in the same game?

  17. I'm not sure where I'll watch it yet, I find it annoying having to hook up my laptop to the TV and watching a laggy Onesoccer stream but I don't know if I can stomach listening to Americans yelling stupid shit for 90 minutes. I might just watch on OS and if we win, I'll watch it again later on FOX to laugh at the salty Americans commentators.

  18. David played the first 62 minutes vs. Kortrijk, in a 1-1 draw. They play Benfica in Portugal on Thursday. Millar came on m. 75 with about 10 others as Basel fell to Hamburg 1-0. Their league starts next Sunday vs. Grasshopper.

  35. Agreed. I really appreciate OneSoccer too, but Wheeler/Dunfield (especially the latter) are too many times a cringefest. It's ok to root for Canada, but not to the point where you lose all objectivity. You're supposed to act like pros, not fanboys.

  36. I think we should use a different formation than what we plan to use in September against them
    2 points
  37. Agreed. As an aside, the rosters in September will be materially different than Sunday. USA may have 11 different players. We'll have 4-5 different players, maybe more (Davies, David, Milan, Eustaquio, Arfield maybe, Atiba maybe, etc.) Also, we're not good enough to get too cute (as you rightly say). We are trying to build a winning mentality and that is difficult. Taking the foot off the gas would be a step backward in approach. We might try hard and lose, but that is part of growing.

^this. Although our quality depth is considerably better than a few years ago, we have exactly 3 Canadian Internationals playing in a top 5 league- Davies, David and Corbeanu. Any player who is getting minutes eligible for Canada is still an automatic call up for us at this point. If he develops and is playing in Ligue 1- he’s a priority call up for us. Let’s see him make it first though.

  40. I might actually watch the game on FOX. I like the "enthusiasm" and Canadian focus of the Onesoccer broadcast but... the homerism and Wayne's World vibe coming from Wheels and Dunfield makes it all feel a bit inconsequential. Its fine for a game vs Cayman Islands at a high school but for big games it seems a bit unprofessional I dont want them to lose that energy but when I'm bitting thru my nails and Canada's defending for periods it doesnt match with the clowning around and going And1 mixtape every time someone does anything and then pretending they didn't just cough the ball up I get it, we're excited, we have good players but let's just keep it a bit more even keeled. If you want to swoon over someone's skill, wait for the replay to come up during a break in play, its more appropriate By the way I think they read this forum because I think I heard Dunfield repeat something I said in a thread lol all good

Aside from Eustaquio, our cup isn't exactly running over in quality young midfielders either. If he can play both CB and midfield at a good level, even better.

Hopefully by Sunday night we will be able to sing the lyrics to Lightfoot’s “Wreck of the Greggory Berhalter”. “The legend lives on from Akinola on down to the big lad they call Cavallini, Larin is said to leave defenders for dead, which is same thing they say about Phonzie....”

  46. Promozione (the 6th tier) has 53 regional divisions! (according to wikipedia). It always amazes me how many Canadians we have had at decent youth teams at Italian clubs and basically none of them have had professional careers of any note.

    Stephen Eustaquio

Interesting that he has essentially replaced Piette in the starting lineup as the defensive midfield. Obviously very different attributes between them both. And I believe there will always be a need for Piette's toughness. But interesting that Eustaquio already has 2 goals in 8 appearances for Canada while Piette is still looking for his first goal after 55 games. Piette also had to endure some pretty abysmal years where we couldn't attack for the life of us. Either way, Eustaquio is able to control a game in that defensive midfield role and still contribute offensively. Given what he has shown on set pieces and his ability to distribute a ball, I expect him to add some assists to his international career as well.

    Lowell Wright

First time watching him today and wow, i can't believe there's not more hype around here for Wright. Nothing flashy today but his defensive positioning is David-esk and he shows impressive natural strength and balance to shoulder roll defenders like Larin does. Add well timed runs and all kinds of other superior technical ability. And he's a 2003..! Assuming he's got the right attitude I'd say he's got what it takes to be a top top prospect for us in short order. Hopefully we don't have to wait for a European transfer rumour before appreciating some of these exciting young CPL kids more
