I would like to see Panama destroy Qatar. Don't know why though. Maybe its because I don't want "guest" teams making it out of the group stage.

  5. I think it's plainly obvious that Herdman put the call out to all the players but left the ultimate decision in their hands. This is why David and Borjan immediately opted out and why we (seemingly) didn't put up a fight with Kennedy. It would be strange for Herdman to let these guys sit out but demand that Davies be there. Also, you keep holding up the USA as some sort of talisman for how to run things, when I think it is clear that Gregg Berhalter may not be the sharpest soccer mind in the knife drawer. The USA is clearly not prioritizing this but they seem to be the outlier. Jamaica brought Bailey and Reid. Mexico brought a lot of their top guys (if not all). I'm not an expert on Costa Rica, but the fact that Campbell and Oviedo and Duarte are all there would make it seem like they are taking it seriously. Seems to be the same for Honduras. And, for what its worth, I was not fine with Radzinski skipping the Gold Cup and that is the first time I've heard someone on here say such a thing.

  6. Now you're just bending over backwards to lay blame. You have a player that wants to play but you're going to send him home? Ludicrous. You do that and next thing you know Cavallini and Osorio and Hoillet and Larin will all start finding excuses not to go too. Because if Herdman doesn't want someone of Phonzie's quality that wants to be there, what's the point of any veteran going? Then Canada is three and out. I know that would make you and @Unnamed Trialist happy, but wouldn't do much for the program at large.

  13. And why should he play for Canada in the Octo, it's not like that guarantees a place in the World Cup. He could put in all kind of blood, sweat and tears for Canada, for nothing. They aren't even paying him! Or say we do qualify - why should he turn up for the World Cup, it's not like we are guaranteed to get out of the group stage... etc. The Gold Cup is our continental championship. It is what we have. And most importantly - Davies himself wanted to be there. "An activity he could have passed on at no cost" - Cut the BS. Given his commitment to the CMNT, Davies doesn't see it that way and that is all that matters.

When I was watching the Euro final the super gay dude behind me was making fun of Chiellini the whole game for being "Bald & Ugly". At one point he yelled out, bald and ugly people shouldn't be allowed to play. I guess instead of laughing I should have asked him to leave. I dont speak the language but the person next to me translated that he was also sexuallly objectifying several of the players. It was very distracting when I was trying to be angry while simultaneously trying to figure out why Luke Shaw has a nice ass

  19. Whether you think every hurtful or offensive chant should be eliminated or where the line should be in terms of "hurtful," Mexico is not getting a contextually raw deal here. Hungary are playing their next three game behind closed doors in part because of anti-gay banners. If you expand to racism which I am up for a debate as to whether that is the same or different but I see as similar. Lots of other places have banned people or fined clubs in the last ten years or so - some samples. Of the top of my head - "our friends south of the river" - Millwall - got a fine a couple years ago for chants in one game. Internationals: Spain fans against Balotelli - £16,137 fine Croatia - good team but not the standout in their area as the Euros showed - stadiums bans after repeated infractions. European club: Atletico Madrid - a 3000 seat closure for incidents and a banner in one game. Red Star Belgrade - Full stadium ban and £61,500 fine for chants during one game. Lyon Partisan Belgrade etc. etc. Mexico have been told repeatedly in repeated games it is unacceptable. Agree with the principle or not, it is not an inconsistent punishment with what has happened in Europe. (I will agree that because some English players are of a higher profile that most football players, when they are the target it gets more attention but most of those incidents above where not directed at English players.)

Firstly - It can absolutely change and will change once serous sanctions at levied. secondly - you act like this is a thousand year old sacred tradition. It’s literally something that started like 15 years ago. It’s not that important and the fans should just drop it out of common sense and decency.

  24. Mate, sorry. But you do love a generalization of those you oppose and are highly ignorant of. The "English" who complain about Bulgaria are not the same "English" who get done for using the "y-word" or singing "We can see you holding hands" at Brighton (To which Brighton sing back "You're too ugly to be gay".) And decent (most) people in Canada and England and elsewhere don't think that "Mexicans" are one amorphous blob, so they aren't all inferior or superior or even in between - because in this great world of ours most of us know a Mexican person or two or many. And like everybody else they are good, bad and everything else.

  25. We need continuity. The error against Martinique and slow starts in a lot of matches in the last couple years ( we were not punished in most of them because it was a poor team we were facing) say that, to me at least. Even if we pretend our Confederation cup means nothing and you ignore the basic lesson you learn from playing sport at any decently competitive level - winning breeds winning- we need our players at least training together before facing a three match window in September. Do you think there will be an excess of training time in those windows? Of course our best player should have been training with us, if he was able to make it work with his club and he wanted to be there. So even if WCQ is the only thing that matters in your mind (it shouldn't be), of course, Alphonso Davies should be with the team, whenever possible.

I was just having similar thoughts. It’s kinda cool having our region a little stronger (Suriname, Haiti, Curaçao, Jamaica stacking up talent, etc). I’m actually paying attention to other teams for the first time (other than US, Mexico) and although it’s direct competition for our beloved Canada, it does make our region a little more interesting and dynamic.

He might be ready for the next challenge of being the number one elsewhere (probably not MLS but perhaps down the road). I would like to hear his thoughts about his coaching career to date.

  31. I accept this is a gesture to a team that gets no competitive matches in the lead up to the WC as its already qualified as host. On top of this, no Confederations Cup, normally the year before the WC, that has been cancelled as well (supposedly due to the heat in summer). If we can prove to have 16 competitive teams in our confederation, then I am fine with not inviting any other side. The only exception I could see would be to invite Conmebol teams, in exchange for having the GC winners at Copa America. Which considering its name and spirit would be appropriate. Edit, bit of disclosure: the Qatar coach was with Barça youth so I've followed him, and also have met other coaches from here, former pros, who went to Qatar to run the Aspire Academy. One, Santi Pou was at one time my kid's coach--he now runs the academies of FC Girona. I also know a young man working with a Spanish coach in the Qatari league, his partner is the kid of friends. There happens to be a strong connection from the early 2000s, but I really don't know Qatari players and admit to not have watched more than a few matches. Qatar is certainly a model in some ways, leaving their terrible human rights and worker safety record aside. They created a structure of a powerful live-in youth academy especially for African kids, from Muslim Africa. Then the league, with the stadium structure (way ahead of the fan base), then worked the best of academy players into teams. So not a bad model, only they are likely overpaying both players, coaches and anyone in the mix.

    Dieu-Merci Michel

Yuma is plainly an African surname, whereas Michel is French sounding. Clearly, TGAA was basing his guess on that rather than solely the first name. I didn't get this at all from the post, I took the "but" to be interchangeable with "regardless" i.e. whether he is Haitian, Angolan, or whatever else, hopefully he can develop into something. In the context of TGAA's previous posts your interpretation of this post seems less accurate as he has been shown to be a booster of African soccer in general. I didn't take TGAA mentioning that he is Haitian as specfically why we have to cap him, just that he's a dual national and TGAA happened to list his nationalities rather than using the term "dual national". In any case, Haiti is in our region while Liberia is not, so if one really wanted to they could make some argument there. I get it's easy to tease TGAA (his posts can grate on me sometimes, but he's harmless mostly), but in this case it really seems to me like guys are picking on normal posts because of who the poster was.

They would have a strong case and for that reason I don't think they'll be punished more than having a few games with no fans. Arguably they shouldn't have even been sanctioned for the Nations League incidents. It would be completely unjust for them to be deducted points based off their fans saying a word. This isn't a situation of fans endangering lives. It's part of their football culture - it's not going to change.

  36. Junior is frustrating sometimes, he will disappear if something isn't driving him, it seems. He still has a ton of skill and some great experience to pass on but I think he needs the right situation. I don't honestly know which one that would be in MLS. Reading is interesting and often competitive but they are probably bringing in Bolasie who would be a similar player and I would want Junior to make sure he was playing a lot.

  37. Based on above, if my math is correct: 32 caps minus 8 caps to start his international career equals 24 caps. So that would make 25 goal contributions in his last 24 international caps (many of those appearances coming off the bench). Not bad for a player that some have been calling washed up for a few years.

  38. I'd rather him play anywhere in Canada. Most mainstream sports watchers (NHL, MLB, NBA) watching TSN/SportsNet will also pay attention to MLS and any increased familiarity with Canadian soccer stars will only increase the interest in the men's national team. Hoilett's skill level is not going to change that much no matter where he lands whether MLS or Championship.

  43. Look at the squad that the americans called up. and yes, it would have been preferable if an injury happens at the club. Its his job to play for Bayern. They are the ones who have invested in him and are paying his salary. Its one thing to get injured while doing your job, its another when doing an activity that you could have easily passed on at no cost. But bottomline he didnt get injured at BM, he got injured training for the gold cup.

Gerry “pardon me I mistake Gerba for Ricketts” Dobson 🤣. Honestly I get the Wheeler hate, it does get annoying at times…for me, I think he’s “trying something” in the likes of Ray Hudson, and not going the typical Dobson, Rauter takes. Whenever I hear Rauter I think the Olympics or curling tbh. I don’t like his voice for soccer.…..but do you see what we are complaining about. The mute button works for everybody.😁

Whitecaps are shite, and have been shite -is fair assessment. It looks good when they bring in all these Canadians, it's horrible when the team has zero identity, and the players suffer. If you can name a CB that has been good for Whitecaps, you're bullshitting yourself. So for me it's a slap in the face that they haven't given him more minutes considering who's been playing in front of him. Maybe the Whitecaps can start thinking about giving their homegrowns like Facchineri some opportunities.

  50. Crepeau didn't get consistent MLS minutes until age 25. If he can become a starter in the A League, I think it's worth exploring. He would likely jump Leutwiler on the depth chart immediately and be added to the group of Crepeau, St Clair, Pantemis, Carducci and Hasal that should get calls over the next decade (assuming Borjan has a few years left too). Cristante is probably kicking himself knowing that he had to spend yesterday being subbed on against England in a Euro Final as opposed to starting against non-FIFA nation Martinique in the Gold Cup.
