    Gold Cup 2021

That “stupid, useless tournament” is our Confederation championship. It may not be the Euros but it will only gain in stature by teams taking it seriously and sending strong squads - like we are doing. As for us taking a strong team, we need to do it to ensure we are completely in sync for the WCQ. Playing in the GC isn’t going to detract from our WCQ campaign - it is a key piece of it. We need to get 2 wins from our first 3 games to be avoid being in a lot of trouble right away. Prep through GC games is the best way to do that with momentum.

Out of all your childish reasons to hate on Herdman, "he's trying too hard to win our continental championship" is probably the most idiotic.

The world also didn’t change when we made our one and only appearance at the WC. Soccer didn’t displace hockey as Canada’s sport and we didn’t erect statues of Ian Bridge and Terry Moore in parks across the country. Winning a major tournament (and yes, the GC is a major tournament in a CONCACAF context) is a goal that strands alone. It is not simply a means to an end. Our GC win was an absolutely beautiful moment that everyone here who was a fan at the time will remember forever. It was the best I ever felt as a CMNT fan. Dismissing that as some sort of inconvenience is not only disrespectful to our confederation championship, it lacks insight into what we are supporting. If the only metric for joy is success at the WC, you may be in for a long line of disappointments.

  4. You play football to win trophies. A grand total of 8 countries have won the World Cup, we probably are not going to be the 9th or 10th. Let's win this Cup. Winning breeds winning if nothing else.

How is winning the Gold Cup not an end in and of itself? The 2000 Gold Cup is literally the only real positive memory I have of the men's national team.

  7. So Mexico is being irresponsible? I guess every team/player in the Euros and Copa America is being irresponsible. Funny how this only applies to the Gold Cup. Nonsense. It's actually unbelievable that some here could post this way. Yes, let's follow Canadian soccer religiously daily but then when it comes to a tournament we can win... oh let's just leave off our generational talent. Sure, let's let Davies go play preseason and risk injury there rather than for the country we follow. Yes, we're definitely harming our chances for WCQ by actually playing together... the players would be much better off preparing for their club seasons. Is this not essentially a preseason/prep for our WCQ? Absolute lunacy by those who just want to go against the grain.

The Americans didn't underrate Jonathan David. They tried to get him into a youth camp but he turned them down. It's also hard to say that they underrated Akinola considering he was on their youth teams for years and got a senior cap seven months ago.

We have the quality on paper to continue to bang in goals. As much as I hate that Davies had to drop due to injury this scenario will test the coaching staff and make them think more about ways to create a system where the team can create chances. It also allows things like Larin playing in his preferred position, which should give us a lift.

Wait isnt MrK the guy always harping about CSA sucks because we never play, we need more games against high profile teams, why dont we play Brazil and France etc ad nauseum?? But its stupid to get most of the national team together for a camp, a game against the USA and if we advance prob a game against Cosa rica or Jamaica and maybe Mexico in semis etc etc??

I was ok with us going with a younger squad at the Gold Cup and leaving some of the established players with their clubs, I think we have enough young talent to be competitive and was looking forward to seeing that! I do think that the way JH is approaching this is good, as others have said we haven't played enough tough competitive matches recently so this is a good opportunity and I am pleased a good portion of our first choices are available! In the interview with JH he has a course plotted to the final which may be optimistic but it is great to have the bar raised a bit!

if the players genuinely look up to their manager, then they will run through brick walls for him. I know Herdman gets a lot of flak for his inexperience as a coach, and because he is no tactical genius, but he does have other qualities that are just as valuable and cannot be taught. He seems to have his players genuinely and fully committed to his vision, and if the players are willing to run through brick walls for him to get Canada to a World Cup, then nothing we watching from the sidelines think or say really matters in the end.

If Ayo turned out to be as good as Jozy I would be ecstatic. Jozy's numbers for the US are great and despite his failures in England his time at AZ was prolific and he was (when healthy) a great FW at TFC. It's easy to meme the guy but prime Jozy was a fun player to watch. Except at Sunderland lol.

He means the Ocho. Also, hard not to love John Herdman. I say this as a guy who was critical of his appointment. This man exudes integrity whenever he speaks and his relationships with his players is real. That arguably trumps tactics when the going gets tough.

Agreed completely. There are those who want to look down on Herdman and I'll freely admit I was one. But the tactics I have seen from him are a step up on any manager I have seen since I've followed Canada (Hart, Mitchell, Floro, Miller, Zambrano). Every other manager we've had has chosen one formation and rigidly stuck with it. They've stubbornly used players in roles that didn't suit them. The 4-2-2-2 vs. the States was a stroke of genius. The change to 3-4-3 vs. Bermuda was great. The foresight to keep his cards close and turn to a 3-5-2 vs. Suriname/Haiti with Johnston at RCB and freeing Davies at LWB was great as well. Johnston mentioned in an interview that he was contacted ahead of camp about this role - so it wasn't just last minute tinkering. If we got by Haiti in 2019 who knows what he would have had in store for Mexico in the semis? I've been really impressed.

How many tactical geniuses are there in international football. Is Garath Southgate a tactical genius? Not quoting to pick on you, just using your comment as a chance to bring up the criticism of Herdman's tactics. Is he really a tactical dunce or is that an unfair reputation he has garnered due to his resume? What we do know is that he's not a tactical genius, but that's not to say he is tactically illiterate, know what I am saying? I am not saying he is Guardiola or anything, but the doubts about Herdman tactically feel like the doubts about Canada defensively, at least to me. In other words they are based more on reputation than reality.

I agree with this 10x over when it comes to our defence. I'd much rather learn now that this three in the back with two wingbacks system does/does not work rather than really test it for the first time against Honduras on Sept. 2nd. That means that our best player must be at this tournament to work out those kinks.

  29. Unfortunately for individuals, it's a numbers game, in terms of £££ and in the massive of number of kids in various systems in England. And it does not, not work, you sort through thousands of kids but sometimes you get (off the top of my head) Joe Coles, Frank Lampards, Rio Ferdinands, Jermaine Defoes, David Beckhams, Fikayo Tomoris, Kevin DeBruynes etc. Not off the top of my head - 16 of the 26 man England squad at the Euros were on loan at one point. Kane - 4 times, Walker - 4 times and (I know keepers are a special case) Pickford 7 and Johnstone 10 times. I am convinced it would have worked for Doneil Henry, if his body did not break down, first at Blackburn. Just another side of it.

  30. Not matter what happens in the future, I will always love Scott Arfield for the win against the States and what that showed we can do. That said I am very happy to have Eustaquio in that spot for a number of years and think it is a step up and possible a big step up.

I don’t know man, I can’t get hyped about European moves that lead to an academy. It’s not as promising as it seems. I would’ve preferred these guys stay in the league, perform then make the move to a first team or reserve team. You can’t rate the CPL highly and then say a guy is only good enough to play u18 laliga youth ball. That can’t be the goal of the CPL teams.

He did say this is what he knew he had to do. Make the doubters - believers. He’s a smooth guy. I think him also increasing his coaching staff, and AirPod in the ear has shown he’s open to change and opinions. I’ll wait for the praise until we play “real” competition, and how Davies is used.

  33. Some people say our 21 squad is better than our 19 squad, but I am not sure. In addition to Arfield, we are also missing Hutchinson, Borjan and David (the biggest omission). Other players like Godinho are an addition by subtraction. Out: Scott Arfield, Atiba Hutchinson, Milan Borjan, Jonathan David, Marcus Godinho, Zachary Brault-Guillard, Nobel Okello, Russell Teibert, Will Johnson, Ashtone Morgan, Liam Millar, Derek Cornelius In: Ayo Akinola, Tajon Buchanan, Scott Kennedy, Liam Fraser, Tyler Pasher, Alistair Johnston, Dayne St. Clair, Theo Corbanu, Harry Paton, Richie Laryea, Stephen Eustaquio, Steven Vitoria Kind of hard to say, right? Although we lost a few players at the top of the roster, the bottom of the roster is much stronger this time around.

It's also a huge risk going in to the WCQ having played far less games than everyone else and without really having faced that level of competition. These upcoming WCQ are the most important Canada games in decades and this particular group hasn't even played octogonal-level competition yet. Obviously the risk analysis has been done and it has been decided that's more important to get more games together than it is to "protect players". Your point is not lost on anyone, and hasn't been since before the squads were even released. Herdman and co have decided that outside of a handful players, it's best to bring everyone in and play some very difficult games together to have some more competitive experience before qualifying. I mean would you be comfortable going into qualifying with the only "real" test the team has faced being two legs against Haiti? That seems like pretty questionable preparations and certainly not the level of competition that would be proper preparation for the teams that we'll be facing in qualifying. Also your last sentence is pretty cherry picked to try and make your point. We'll also be playing Costa Rica/Jamaica and hopefully Honduras/Qatar or even Mexico in a knockout-style tournament. If you're going to try and make an argument at least look at the full picture instead of just the parts that support your narrative. You're saying it's not worth playing Haiti, and yet you're saying you want to go into the most important series of games for this country in decades, with the only preparation being having played Haiti...

I think this is a spillover from the Haiti game at the 2019 GC and the away USA game in CNL...but the tide is slowly turning. In addition to the USA home win, JH now has wins vs Suriname and Haiti X2 in WCQ and we are in the Ocho. A result vs the USA and an appearance in the GC semis will go a long way to dispel any concerns with pre or in game tactical ability

  40. Wrong again, boy you are on quite the run. Pepple goes into a solid u-19 side of a La Liga team because that is the top level a kid his age will normally play at if he is on track for a high-level pro career. Including the ones at Real Madrid who they beat in their league match. It is also a much higher development level than the CPL, which simply dictates playing time to kids, with no specific development programme or plan. In any case, your hope of a kid jumping from CPL to a reserve team or a first team in a good league: hasn't happed yet, not even close. The arguably best player in the first year went to Belgium and did not play. One of the better players went to Barnet, the worst team in England 5th tier. The projected path is frankly shitty, so far anyways. It is hard enough to go from MLS to a good side in Europe, never mind CPL or USL. BTW, Aribim plays centre forward, he is up front and centre for Getafe in most matches, or could be stuck on a side in the odd 4-4-2. But he's considered close to a target or "ariete". His real problem is that being born in late December 2002, he does not qualify for u-19 Spanish football by one week. They'll either have to send him to the B team, which is probably too big a step up; or let him find other options. So after a very short stint of 3-4 months his development path will be stunted because of age, nothing else. That fact that he has not postulated a return to CPL is promising, however.

  41. I was against taking our best players to this tournament, and still feel they should be in their pre-seasons, getting ready for the long haul. After all, what clubs do in their preseasons, in terms of medical testing, fitness, resistence, is what will allow a player to last a whole season of matches. Without injury, without burnout. That includes the 14 upcoming matches for WC qualifying. Basically what I am saying is this: by not allowing the clubs to do their job with the players they have under contract, we are risking our own WC campaign. We are throwing our players into an intensive set of qualifiers without doing anything to ensure they are properly prepared in terms of rest and prep. We are treating them as raw meat, as cannon fodder, for what purpose? We are not properly prepping as half our starters are away; any psychological edge or even winning is only relative (last time we won we were immediately bitch-slapped like idiots in WC qualifying) So this GC squad is in good part irresponsible. I'll watch, I want us to win. And even if we win, it basically gives us almost nothing going forward except some iffy notion of mental edge or whatever Herdman would spin it. And the drawbacks outweigh any purported positive.

Jonathan David and Ayo Akinola.. how hilarious would that be?

  46. Genuinely asking... has this happened before? Has anyone ever put in a decent Gold Cup showing, and then moved to a top 5 / CL team as a result? I just have trouble imagining these teams getting ecstatic over Larin and Eustaquio dominating Martinique... or even doing decently against a Mexico. They've had a whole season to watch them. I can buy an Eloy Room type move where he wasn't getting playing time in the first place, but this seems different.

So we lost 4 starting caliber players but we brought in about 7 players who I think anyone would be happy seeing the pitch with a full strength squad: Buchanan, Kennedy, Eustaquio, Laryea, Johnston, Vitoria, Akinola. We’re definitely a lot more well rounded. You also can’t discount the improvements of certain players such as Davies and Larin. I don’t think one could argue that anyone has regressed.
