  5. I know were all Canada fans here but some of our negative bias really shows on our takes. Overall, slow start but a great game for Canada. A quick breakdown for players. Borjan - was a great leader and captain out there and besides his terrible pass to start the game did everything right in my opinion. Johnston - Other than getting beat for pace on the one through ball, he was fantastic. Henry - He clearly still has a few haters on here who will try and bring him down. Had a few bad passes but I thought his overall game was actually quite good and as the OneSoccer panel mentioned, he had to lead a couple of new players alongside him (even though Kennedy and Johnston didn't really need it). Kennedy - Bravo, give yourself a round of applause. Great performance. Laryea - He was good but not great. Didn't show his usualy flash going forward but in big games like this we need him to help ensure a shutout which he did. Davies - Oustanding. That is all. Eustaquio - Very nervy start and some very poor passes early on but he was absolutely outstanding as the game progressed, particularly in the 2nd half. Piette - He was okay. I'm just not sure he's going to do enough for this midfield. Would rather see him off the bench to shut teams down. Osorio - Not a great game. Clearly not match fit and it showed but he did get better as the game went on. I also think he thrives with a more attack minded midfielder beside him such as Atiba and Arfield, or even Kaye. Larin - Not a particularly great game for him. Some people on here seemed to enjoy that he wasn't at his best either. David - Outstanding. Obviously missed a breakaway early but other then that was great. MAK - Thought he looked very good. I would consider starting him or Wotherspoon over Piette or Osorio. Cavallini - I thought he was fairly good in his short time on the field. Although like many of our subs, they all stood out with a defeated Suriname team late. Wotherspoon - He grows on me more and more every game. Buchanan - Good but didn't get to show too much in his short appearance. Adekugbe - I thought he was good as well. Continues to impress me and I am much more confident in him starting games now more than ever.

  7. I think this is pretty unfair to Larin. Watching him play in Turkey all year, he’s highly capable. The issue is, he’s not really a target man. His best position is something between a FW and an old-school number 10 who plays behind the target man. it’s hard to figure out how we fit that sort of role in the team right now with all the other options but it shouldn’t stop us from trying.

  8. Not sure why. I thought he had a great game. Though David could have had a PK but generally hasn’t interfered and has been solid.

  10. I find the day after game day threads very interesting. Sometimes I'll get a notification that someone has reacted to one of my in-game comments a day or two later and I always have the same three thoughts: 1) Some poor soul is going through the entire in-match thread after the game's over? 2) When did I say that? Better question: why did I say that? 3) Maybe I should cut down on the pints next time.

  11. Perfect that we ended up with Haiti. The Gold Cup game was an embarrassment to Herdman and the Team everyone will be hungry to put that right. Even more motivation to an already motivated squad. Very interested to see how he handles the squad rotation though.

  12. We are not currently a better team without a healthy Scotty Arfield. Full stop.

  14. For all the teeth-gnashing about Arfield, I would personally rather have Hutch available for the Haiti home and away. But would definitely welcome either.

  15. I'm the definition of a casual. I'm a sports junkie and really only got into soccer about a decade ago because of my wife's boss who's from England. He wasn't even aware of this game until 2 days ago. I mean England's number one for him, but he's lived in Canada for 20 years and soccer is his number one sport. If this was on the big networks, they would advertise the game in advance and fans like him would definitely tune in. He ended up picking up a one soccer sub to watch the game Yesterday after I told him about it. There's a large contingent of ex pats from countries from all over the world that could get behind this Canadian team. We need to do a better job of marketing the team.

  16. For those of us old enough, the past voices of Canadian soccer. Who, by the way, I wouldn't trade for the world. Vic Rauter and Graham Leggat Jerry Dobson and Craig Forrest There's a problem with Wheeler? Enjoy it. There's a sort of charm in the personal investment these people make in Canadian footie, and are unashamed to broadcast it, that will grow on you.

  18. Thoughts: - The future is sooooo bright. This team is going to be so fun to watch the next decade. David and Davies chemistry is pure world class. I can't wait till David plays for a world class team and watch him and Davies dominate in big Champions league games. - Borjan I'm happy he is the captain I love his vocal and leadership skills. - Kennedy and Johnston both played great. Simple and efficient. Very few mistakes - Eustaquio is amazing. He had a rocky first 15-20 minutes but after looked great. He is going to be such a great midfield for us especially with Hutch getting older. - Please start Kaye. He continues to look great when he comes on and I think can play well with Davies and David as he has great pace. Huge win boys and lets get that revenge vs Haiti!!!!! Great night

  22. We have to be thankful for the experience in playing Suriname just before this series. We needed to get our feet wet in a match against a team of pros and we did. Suriname is a better squad on paper vs. Haiti but this will be a step up given the away factor and experience of Haiti. I think Haiti will be a little disadvantaged having not played a real solid national team in the lead up.

  23. 25. I will say this - props to OneSoccer for fixing the issues from Saturday night. The stream against Aruba was atrocious and the worst viewing experience I've ever had. I still don't like that they didn't really make a public announcement about it and just ignored it - a smaller company should not be doing that. But the stream last night was perfect.

Great game. Given our concerns about CB, his emergence could be just as important over the next few years as some of the more high-profile guys.

  29. We were outstanding last night and rose to the occassion. Some thoughts: - Osorio had a few loose touches, but he was a very important part of the midfield. He is mobile, ball secure, intelligent, and experienced. I was a little upset that he was rusty in the first half, but considering the magnitude of the game and the lack of recent action, I think he did a fine job. - Piette and Eustaquio were also very good. Not perfect, but they both had solid games and with Osorio they controlled the midfield. I know some people want Kaye in there, but I liked the balance tonight. - Johnston and Kennedy were excellent. Much has already been said. I would feel comfortable seeing these two against Haiti. - Henry was very good. I have been a big critic lately and said he could be the best or the worst we have on any given day, and last night was one of his good nights. Great game from him. - Buchanan is a great sub to bring on. Someone pointed out how good Laryea and Davies were in this formation, but I think Buchanan gives us great depth behind Laryea in that spot, if not competition. ZBG will have his chances there too. On the left Guiterrez will give Adekugbe left wing back competition. We are literally 3 deep in both of those spots. - Much had been made about our weak defence, but that was far from the case tonight. I wonder what the Suris are saying now. Looking forward to iMAXitFootball now this morning. He really did overlook our MLS players, as I figured.

  37. Not sure about that. He was as shaky as the entire team in the first half an hour adjusting to a new system. He was very vocal and made some big plays and tackles. His error prone tag might not ever get fully shaken but he had a big game imo. Not least baring in mind his lack of game time in his legs and how long it's been since he played international football. I don't think I have ever seen anything but 100% confidence from Henry on the pitch. Judgement.... our confidence in him using better judgement... thats likely much different. If he is going to make a mistake he will do it full bloodied and with belief lol.

  39. I said it a few weeks back, but we had the perfect schedule in this part of the qualification process. We initially faced the group minnow in Cayman Islands, then the slightly stronger Aruba. We had a more challenging but entirely beatable test in Suriname and now we face a Haitian team that will be even tougher (especially given the home and away setup) but which we should ultimately win. You couldn’t ask for a gentler, more progressive path to the Ocho. And all of this after we were collectively freaking out about the changes that were announced months back re using the CONCACAF rankings and how things never go our way. Well chin up lads because the tide is turning.

  41. Thoughts from last night: - The good... Davies and David: there was a collective "oh sh&%" from the rest of CONCACAF last night. The kids are in full beast mode! Davies is impossible to knock off the ball and routinely slips through a double team. David has the ability to time a run, finish, and create something out of nothing by himself. Steel sharpens steel and there is no doubt being on two of the top sides in the world has upped both of their games considerably. Suriname have a very credible defence and our wonderkids smashed them like a rented guitar. 4-0 actually flattered Suriname. It easily could have been 6-0. - The bad... Nervous start: more consults with Herdman's sports psychology team are required. On the other hand I'm glad we faced a credible opponent in a do or die match, but also not one that was particularly offensively gifted, and couldn't punish us for it. Hopefully they've gotten that out of their system and will preform better against teams that can. - The ugly... "home" games: an NHL team, i.e. a private for-profit business, gets a "national interest" exemption from the returning traveller isolation restrictions, and our men's national soccer team doesn't get one for world cup qualifying? Ridiculous!
    7 points
  42. Yeah, I know right? Like fuck Herdman if Canada ever loses a game, but also sorta fuck him if we win a do-or-die match that most of us were nervous about 4-0.

He was fantastic. Unbelievably composed in possession. I think his first touch was a missile off the chest and he handled it with ease. So so good and you could tell his teammates trusted him completely.

  47. Hot take but I haven’t hated Henry’s game. He’ll never be the best on the ball, but we have other good facilitators back there. Always in a good position, strong going into challenges and takes the right challenges, a good presence in the air. Kennedy has some nice pass and on ball quality to complement it.
