I DMed his this message, along with the Sheff Utd post commenting on his England call-up: "let them develop you, then come play with Phonzie and Canada *canada flag x3* " He liked my message, so I think he knows exactly what he's doing. If you ask me, he's clearly committed to Canada, but he'd be a fool to turn down an England youth call-up. If he has ambitions of leaving for a bigger club, an England call-up boosts your stock tremendously. If we make 2022, don't be surprised if he comes. But I don't see him joining us for qualifiers or Gold Cup. That being said, making 2022 shows that we are at least a competent footballing nation, and that is what it would take to get him on board. Bomb qualifiers and England might be ahead in the race for commitment.

Geezus Christ. Did I miss something? Thirty something player weighed down with injuries in the 2nd half of his club season is going to take a pass against the WCQs against Aruba & Suriname? The rascal! If Arfield is anywhere near being the difference between the Golden Generation Herdman inherited and those two then Arfield isn't the problem. No bloody chance. Herdman knows what's what with Arfield and I'd expect every other player who's a given in a Canada side. Real world considerations taken into account for each.

If we can't beat Suriname and Haiti without him - we don't deserve to be in the Ocho He was supposed to be out for the rest of the season but healed fast enough to play the final game. Let's get the job done and have him be 100% for the games in the Ocho where we WILL need him and obviously, has a preference for playing those. But let's let him rest the whole summer so he gets his minutes next year at Rangers - People forget that Rangers will try to qualify for the Champions League group stage. Healing and making it to play at the highest level in the better long term play here. No point having him injured against Suriname or Martinique at the Gold Cup.

He's still a ways away from the senior side for England. Especially with Kane, Rashford, Greenwood, Sancho, Foden, Grealish, Saka, Sterling and Watkins all firmly ahead of him. Then you have the secondary group of players who are all also ahead with Calvert-Lewin, Abraham, Hudson-Odoi, and Nketiah. England is a hype factory, next year I wouldn't be surprised if some random teenager scores a few goals in the Prem and he becomes alll the rave. I just hope Jebbison enjoys his time with the U19 squad. This is valuable experience whether or not he actually plays for the English senior side.

It's not just Aruba and Suriname. It's also the likely do-or-die home-and-away against Haiti. If he has legitimate health/family/personal reasons for missing this crucial few weeks, he'll have had that hard conversation with JH and we'll likely see him again down the road. On the flip side, if he's just flippantly taking a pass so he can enjoy the benefits of Glasgow as a newly crowned Scottish champion with Rangers, he's probably done with Canada. We'll learn which it is at some point in the future, most probably.

I don't recall anything specific, but he does have young kids and perhaps that's weighing on him in the post-covid world. I got the sense from him when he joined that it'd be an adventure for him, playing in different countries in a different region of the world. He pretty much said as much back in 2015, if I am not mistaken. Now in 2021, the joys of travel have been stripped away and many people have re-evaluated their priorities. Just speculating, but I think we are seeing that, combined with coming off a tough season injury wise plus the fact he's on the wrong side of 30. I still see him showing up for some big games where we absolutely need him, providing he's available. If I were a betting man I would predict he finishes his career just shy of 30 caps. He's got 19 right now.

There are hundreds of kids involved in England's youth national programs but only a handful at each age group breakthrough at the senior level. Again, I would love him to commit to our senior squad but the exposure he will get with the u19's in England is far greater than with Canada. Better for his club career to get as many games as possible in the youth setup. Obviously the more games he gets at youth level starts to become a worry. I'll worry a little more when he starts breaking through the English u21 program. Again taking into account only a select few players make it to the senior squad per year age group. For reference - the following players are all attacking players as well. Harvey Elliott is the same age as Jebbison with over 50 professional games with Fulham, Liverpool & Blackburn. 0 senior England games. Jude Bellingham is the same age as Jebbison with nearly 90 professional games with Birmingham City & Borussia Dortmund. 2 senior England games. Jamal Musiala is the same age as Jebbison with nearly 40 professional games for Bayern Munich. 0 senior England games. I'm not too worried yet about Jebbison who has 2 professional games with Sheffield United. You also have to assume that other attackers of the same age at bigger clubs like Liam Delap from Manchester City are touted higher as well.

  17. The Copa America should be bigger (in terms of importance and global popularity, and it's why I think the Gold Cup and Copa should be merged), and the Africa Cup of Nations is always interesting. Only the current Gold Cup (where with one important exception it's always the US and Mexico) or the OFC (where there's no team of importance - sorry New Zealand soccer) are actually poor/irrelevant. I'd rather see work to improve the regional tournaments than a World Cup every 2 years.

^^ OK, I have to admit I'll loving the YouTube clips. Do your worst yah bastards! Not underestimating Arfield. He's a given starter on my team sheet and he might be at his best yet. He's also 32, nursing injuries and if he isn't already any day now he'll be staring down the last real money-making player contract he's ever going to receive. So yes, I believe given his past commitments that he has earned a healthy degree of faith from us in his decision making as to when he can or can not commit to national team duty. Read DeRo's book, enjoyed it. We take a lot of things for granted from our footballers and so much happens with them off the pitch and out of sight that it can be a wonder sometimes how they carry on as well as they do. We need to be reminded of that sometimes. I do anyway. The Canadian group going into this cycle of WCQ has more game changers in it than any that's come before. It's going into a cycle with an organization behind it which is light years ahead of where it was for any previous cycle in a confederation which used to be a barely disguised criminal organization. Questions remain of course, but to my mind this is the 1st WCQ cycle ever that I don't feels like the deck is stacked against us. If this lot can't do it at this stage, short one player.....

York United’s Angus McNab on changes to York Lions Stadium for 2021 https://canpl.ca/article/york-uniteds-angus-mcnab-on-intl-players-changes-to-york-lions-stadium-for-2021 "When fans return to York United’s home stadium this season, it will look different from when they were last there in late-2019. The club, working with York University, has made a number of changes to the former Pan-American Games venue, including removing the running track that once circled around the pitch. They are also upgrading the playing surface to FIFA Quality Pro turf, which is also up to World Rugby standards. “Everything is working well,” McNab said of the renovation project thus far. “Progress continues and it’s going to be really, really exciting there with what we’re doing.” There are plans to build a standing supporters section in the stadium, but McNab says it likely won’t be possible for the 2021 season, when fans can hopefully finally return."

That's right. This is why we celebrate depth. We should be happy that missing Arfield won't break us, instead of getting upset that we don't have every single player available. Speaking of depth, this may create the opportunity for someone else to have a "Fraser" moment with our team. There is a silver lining to Arfield's absence.

Come on man, the guy just came back from 2 important injuries. It's just normal and logical if he wants to keep playing a few more years. We don't know the full deal, but by seeing him play even one match you just know he isn't the lazy, take it easy type. You're putting him in the Vela category too quickly.

  23. For sure. The other thing is that Transfermarkt overinflates young players due to their potential. Suriname have a veteran group, so players like Donk (and Hutchinson to be fair) are better than their valuations suggest. Aside from the nerves of beating them, I am genuinely curious to see how they look. They are good on paper, but looking at some of the individual player pages on wiki, it doesn't seem like some of these guys are playing much despite being at good clubs.

If Arfield isnt fully fit, ie nursing something that needs long term rest to be able to have a good season next year etc, then he needs to skip this camp. What good is he going to be, if he's barely played in last month and isnt 100%? Same with Osorio..or anybody else for that matter. If everyone is in camp Arfield might not start anyways...It could be some combo of Eustaquio, Kaye, Peite, Osorio and Hutch in the middle. Who isnt replaceable now in our heady days of having some depth?? Davies, David, Larin/Cav, Borjan..??? Hell, when Kaye went down against the USA, Fraser stepped in and played like a champ.

I just can’t see how a lot of you guys are giving him a bly to be picking and choosing. Arfield is very good, he isn’t the undisputed greatest midfielder we have though. We have a lot of very good midfielders who all offer something different. Knowing that I hope Herdman sticks to his word of not allowing guys to pick and choose. Only guy who has earned this right is Atiba! And he was there for Bermuda, and Cayman Islands while chasing a league double, and coming from further away. Arfield deserves no exceptions or special treatment - he only has 19 caps of service not 39! Lastly, I’m not writing him off...but when we do qualify for the Octo, and play our first games against Honduras...he better how he’s in some great form to earn a call. Run with us, or be done with us.

Not sure this means we've seen the end of Airfield. He was fit enough to come off the bench last week, but that was after being sidelined with his second significant injury of the season. He's probably taking his time to recover after a season with a lot of ups and downs. I am sure he's wishing the lads the best and we have enough guys to get the job done. I will give him the benefit of the doubt until it's announced he's done. Until then he's a part of the program in my eyes.

  31. Just estimating off the top of my head... Larin 10, Osorio 6, Kaye 6, Cavallini 4.5, Eustaquio 4, Laryea 2.5, Piette 2, Johnston 2...that's 40ish Hoilett 2, Arfield 2, Borjan 2, Crepeau 1.5, Buchanan 1, Nelson 1, St. Clair 1, Brault-Guillard 1, Miller 1, Guiterrez 1, Fraser 1, Cornelius 0.75, Hutchinson 0.5, Akindele 0.5, Wotherspoon 0.5...that's 16ish So that's pretty close to 60M

I see where you're coming from, but Arfield is not helping his Canada chances by sitting out, if you want to look at it that way. It's clearly a risk worth taking for him, otherwise he'd find a way to be there come hell or high water. He won't be able to waltz his way back into the starting line up, if and when he returns (I am confident he will return). The same is true for Osorio though, who's also been struggling with injury. They are both in the same situation if you think about it. Obviously I get that doubt has been cast about Arfield's commitment for various reasons, so that part is different, but the reality is that both could miss this window and Kaye or even Eustaquio could step ahead of them in the pecking order. We know Stephen has the ability to play a little more advanced, while up until this point it's seemed like Kaye has been a little more behind Osorio/Arfield than ahead. The impact of the guys who help us advance won't be easily forgotten. These are massive games, far bigger than Nations League against the United States or the 2019 Gold Cup.

I think it makes sense for him to wait until we qualify for the 3rd round. Once we secure that, I think he should dump England. Playing in the Gold Cup with the Canadian senior team is probably more valuable than earning additional English youth caps, and he would have earned a few more by then, so best of both worlds? In the fall he could be called in to play in WCQ against Honduras, the United States, etc. This would be undoubtedly a better development experience and resume builder than England youth national team caps. If he turned us down at that point it would lead me to believe he's genuinely aiming for an English senior cap down the line. If his strategy is to wait until we qualify for the World Cup, not only would he have missed out on some crucial development opportunities during Canada's qualification, but he could also miss out on selection for the World Cup squad, since he wouldn't have secured his spot in the team. It's already competitive up front with David, Larin and Cavallini, not to mention Davies, Millar, Corbeanu and Buchanan. It would be straight forward to ease him in as of today, but who's to say what the landscape up front looks like come World Cup time? Waiting for now is probably fine, but I am not sure he should wait too long.

He might have gotten more money playing in CSL, though that's changing now. At CSL he'd face against some really good foreign players, but generally, domestic Chinese players aren't that good. For sporting reasons, K League (and J League) is better than China.

It's breeding and feeding the winning mentality. It's about preparing the depth plays from 18-30 for 3 match day windows. I'm all for some of the duals, (especially if it means cap-tieing) but I rather this team not look like the Olympic team....where a lot of guys were missing. Yes tier 2 guys, but most will most likely be called up to the WCQ or will be jeoparadizing their spots at their MLS clubs.
    1 point
  47. ...And this is why I think of the song "you found me" by the the fray speaks to how I feel about this situation. But instead we found him "lost and in secure" no club, two bad knee injuries....so my question for him is why now, "where were you, when everything was falling apart". I just rather give these spots to guys who are performing/playing at their clubs. Long are the days when we should see Unattached FC players on the squad (or so I thought), using the national team as a springboard to FIND a club shouldn't be a thing. We got younger guys for that.
