  1. I am almost done De Ro's book, and have read through his chapter covering his national team exploits and it is very, very fascinating. I wanted to share my thoughts and what he spoke about the CSA. First off the book itself is a pretty good and quick read, his early life stuff is very stream of consciousness and is mainly filled with anecdotes more than anything about his time growing up in Scarborough. It does paint a good picture on who he was and the troubles he faced growing up. Considering the national team and what most of you would be interested in: -He was cut from the 1993 U-17 team for being too small despite the coach at the time admitting he was one of the more skilled player's he'd seen. No mention on 1995 but he made it sound like he was cut out of the program completely until the U-20 level. -The 2000 Gold Cup was the perfect storm that almost didn't happen. There was very tense negotiations between the CSA and the veterans over contracts and pay structures and De Ro mentions that the team was told by the CSA that they didn't want to give bonuses because they didn't expect the team to win anything (This sort of sets the stage for how De Ro describes the CSA's attitude towards the men's national program}. Contract talks finished and terms were agreed one day before their first match! He's convinced the team unity and the bond that was formed because of these negotiations is what got Canada the victory at the tournament. -Loved the experience at the 2001 Confed Cup but was sad to miss out on the 2002 WC -Frank Yallop had big ideas for the team but wasn't supported at all by the CSA. De Ro mentions that the program after 2000 lost it's winning mentality and that always hampered them. He tried to change that culture whenever he could but was not successful. -De Ro goes into a long rant where he expresses that ultimately it's apathy and an unwillingness to do the work on the part of the CSA historically which is why guys like De Guzman and Hargreaves opted to not play for Canada. He mentions that whenever fans would ask him why JDG2 or others were playing for other countries instead of Canada he'd reply with "Because we make it easy for them." Particularly he mentions the CSA doesn't really appear to care about its players and has no interest in promoting or supporting them. He doesn't really talk about this in the past tense either so this is something perhaps that he still feels. -He mentions that his first POTY award, his gift was from Frank Yallop (Not the CSA) who got him a signed Pele jersey. And his second POTY was a Sony gift card that he didn't even know the value of until he went to a store (It was $500). -He mentions that American players get cars or Rolexes as gifts and was frustrated by what he perceives as a lack of investment in the talent in Canada by the CSA. It should be noted De Ro regularly mentions the American program throughout the book and how it leapfrogged Canada almost overnight by just actually investing. He says that in the 90s all the Canadian travel teams were regularly beating American ones. -He's frustrated with the lack of promotion by Canadian media. Mention's Atiba's accomplishments and how no one knows about them in Canada, How media would rather promote Neymar or Ronaldo over Davies or David and even mentions how the Canada will promote Lebron more than guys like Jamal Murray and RJ Barrett. He hopes this changes as the game grows. -He goes into saying 2010 qualifying felt cursed. He mentions in detail the infamous game against Honduras in Montreal where it felt like an away game and everything went wrong. Didn't like Dale Mitchell's defensive tactics either. -Mentions that Panama in 2012 was his lowest point after getting hurt, not just for what he thought could be a career ending injury but that he felt he let down the entire country. Cried in his hotel room that night over not being able to continue. Legitimately thought his career was over. Doesn't really get into 8-1 as he wasn't there for that. -Benito Floro really liked set pieces -He really likes John Herdman and feels he's putting in place an identity with the team. - He would like to coach Canada one day -De Ro then mentions that he's played with three generations of ballers (He mentions Alex Bunbury's generation, Jimmy Brennan's generation, and Jonathan Osorio's generation) and the CSA has not changed anything about how they approach the program. He laments the fact there's no national training centre and other top class facilities yet the CSA wants to make a WC without putting in the work. And that people with power don't actually have an soccer DNA and approach things from a business perspective. He also mentions how MLSE were shocked TFC was as popular as they were when they launched in 2007. -He particular echoes a (somewhat now changed) popular sentiment he felt that Montreal, Vancouver and Toronto for a long time had no actual interest in developing Canadian talent. He stresses the importance of the CPL and what that will mean for Canadian ballers. - He ends with saying that he didn't enjoy when the CSA brought him out before a Canada game after his retirement to hand him a plaque, have him wave at a sparse crowd for two seconds and then disappear and that it made him feel unappreciated. He does say that his international career didn't end how he wanted it to and that he is sad about it. The book is a good read I recommend it! Lots of interesting stories about his time in Europe and MLS. The stuff about TFC is hot tea for sure.

From Burak Yılmaz to Atiba: I prayed for your championship throughout the season Following Beşiktaş 's 16th victory, Burak Yılmaz congratulated Atiba with the words "Daddy, your eyes are enlightened." The 35-year-old player, who made history with his goals in Lille , praised the Canadian, saying "The championship is very good," and Atiba replied, "Now it's your turn". After Beşiktaş's championship, old friends also took to the phone. Burak Yılmaz experienced the championship joy of Beşiktaş, of which he is a congress member, by calling his managers and former teammates. Burak Yilmaz, who had a video meeting with Atiba Hutchinson, the veteran name of black and white, said, "Father, your eyes are bright! I congratulate you all, you deserved it until the end. I prayed for your championship throughout the season. You made the Beşiktaş fans proud, "he said. YOU SHOW YOU ARE THE KING TheCanadian player replied , "We are always following you. There is a final in front of you and you will be the champion. You have shown that you are the king there too. We are waiting for the championship."

I love the idea that Hutchinson is the father or daddy to players like Yilmaz, who are veteran father figures in their own right. Perhaps Hutchinson should be considered the grand daddy.

  9. The only time this Canada squad has looked comfortable is with their foot on the gas. Playing a counter style would be a recipe for disaster IMO. Even if we go up by 1 or 2 we just need to keep pushing and avoid a Haiti '19.

  10. In addition to what @trc2014 has said, the 23 man-squad is the same as what they had against Aruba in March except for the following changes: In: Mitchell Donald Mitchell Te Vrede Ridgeciano Haps Ryan Koolwijk Sheraldo Becker Out: Albert Nibte Alvaro Verwey Gilberto Cronie Ivanildo Misidjan Roscello Vlijter Sergino Eduard

  11. If Suriname lose to Bermuda we can afford to lose because they won't overturn our goal difference. If Suriname draw with Bermuda or win, we can afford to draw, but we cannot lose.

  12. That squad is probably right there with Panama and curaçao outside of the top 6 in concacaf. They could beat us on a good day but we would obviously be favourites. It helps that we will only need a draw to beat them - they will press and hopefully we can catch them on counter.

Good examples. Reading the crazy (or at least, premature) hype people are throwing around reminded me that David Edgar scored as a teenager in his 2nd Premier League appearance, against Manchester United (when they were still a dominant team), and Edgar's goal was prettier. Edgar was good for Canada for sure, but he was an English Championship level player through the bulk of his career, not a world beating Premier League phenom. I'm very happy for Jebbison, and excited at the thought he could end up being a really good player and could play for Canada, but he's got one back post tap in goal in his career. That's a great start for a 17 year old, but the work is just beginning for him now.

Wasn't given anything today but still gave an ok account of himself. Just the type of performance we need to be honest. More minutes and everyone in England cooling their jets a bit! Will be a very interesting off-season with the two German clubs and most of the top English clubs now said to be "monitoring". Still fancy our chances for a June or Gold cup call.

  18. Larin and Hutchinson have won the Turkish Cup, completing the domestic double! This is the first time Besiktas won the double since the 2008-09 season. This Cup triumph is their 10th overall and first since 2010-11. There are only 3 trophies now pending in what's been a stellar season for Canadians: David Wotherspoon Scottish Cup Milan Borjan Serbian Cup Jonathan David Ligue 1 By week's end everything will have been decided...

I think having more players playing internationally is positive for the club and league, which in turn is good for soccer in this country. Plus it gives me an excuse to follow a team through qualifying that I know absolutely nothing about

Unless I am mistaken he hasn't played with the B team yet, just the U23 team. He may have to put time in at that level first. My expectation is that he starts next season off with Sporting B and ends it with playing games for the first team.

I think he takes the call in June, we were after him early, were building something with these Toronto kids. Corbeanu and him give us 2 more PL caliber players, I know the CB doesn’t look great but we are close, it’s a matter of time until the talent in the back catches up. We have so many midfield prospects, a lot up top. The back end will follow.

Looks a nice little park. Lots of open field, lots of water. Yup, looks a right proper breeding ground for Canada geese. You know....if they work the schedule right Saskatoon could be one of the best parks for away support. Guarantee you there would be at least one organised road trip out of Winnipeg, Edmonton & Calgary every season. Doing an overnight! Would be great fun for the locals.

I am extremely excited for Jebbison and the prospect of him playing for Canada. I would love to see him commit to us this year but would not fault him at all if he's interested in playing in the English youth system since they play quite regularly. However, the hype train does have to halt a little bit. The timing worked perfectly for him to get some late season minutes and he made a great run with a great finish to score. It may be his only premier league goal for a few seasons, or he may score again this weekend. England has so much depth and quality that they are not going to be hung up a player scoring one goal. There are 13 other players besides Jebbison that are 20 years or younger that have scored at least one goal this Premier League season. Most will never reach the senior England squad. Being relegated to the championship is probably the best thing to happen to him. Although, I don't think he will be an automatic starter in the championship, I can imagine him getting somewhat regular minutes next season there. Mason Greenwood has 1 England senior cap. He has 29 goals in all competitions for Manchester United (17 premier league goals). Safe to predict that Jebbison is probably not on the same trajectory as Greenwood was two seasons ago. Callum Hudson-Odoi who also scored many premier league goals as a teenager has nearly 100 games for Chelsea and only 3 England caps. Young English players score as teenagers in the premier league all the time and then truly don't amount to anything more than an average championship player. To England, that means very little but for Canada an average championship player would be a great add for our program.

I don’t think we need to worry about England trying to cap him any time soon. They’ll definitely try to keep him in their youth setup, but I don’t see them bringing a Championship player (if he even starts there) into their team that easily. He’s probably years away from an England cap, if one ever comes. So it may come down to whether he’d rather play in our national team, or play in their youth teams, with the hopes of one day potentially playing for their national team.

Even if he is playing for the Philippines he is still representing Canada in a way. Canadian born and developed player representing a large nation like the Philippines because the talent level of the Canadian national team is too high. We are exporting talent now!

I think the hype is getting a little out of hand. Yes, good on the kid for scoring and yes, I'm sure the press around him has the England FA raising their eyebrows. However, to say he did something that no one else has ever done is a little disingenuous. He scored on his first start and he was the youngest to do so. That is great for him. Remember though that it was in a nothing game at the end of the season. To compare him to Rooney, who scored his first PL goal at 16 years old, isn't really correct. What I think will play more of a part is what happens next year. Sheffield have gone down. If he remains with them, he'll have to tear up the championship to keep eyes on him. If he gets sold to a higher profile club, he could get lost in the shuffle. The next 12 months are crucial in figuring out what exactly his trajectory is.

  42. @Obinna, Thanks for your great perspective. I'll take a step back from what your saying. I've said many times that change can be influenced by change from within. We as fans have that role to play too as well. That's why I'm interested in being involved with what happens at "The Voyageurs" as an organization. If anyone is interested in being part of the culture, I implore your to get involved and join here I do think things have been moving verrryyy sloowww, just in regards to getting somethings in place as we are in special time/place with a lot of our guys being champions, our team setting new personal records, and hopefully enter new territories in October. Absolutely no momentum is being built from the Voyageurs, outside of us who communicate and discuss here (Canadian Soccer News). Maybe the thought is we need to be in a stadium or be able to appear/attend events....but its the groundwork that needs to happen. I have a lot of opinions on the marketing presence of this group. As I personally think a lot of forward-fresh minds are needed to do our part to better engage the masses, and our internal and external football communities.
