  1. https://pacificfc.canpl.ca/article/matthew-baldisimo-called-up-to-philippines-national-team Has filed his one-time-switch for the Philippines. Doesn't speak the language and has never been to the country! Now that his U23/U24 chances are over, it would have been very difficult for him to break into the senior #CanMNT side. Best of luck to him.

  4. I've been to away matches supporting Canada. There were very few of us. Our sections were very modest. We are often in terrible minority. We are not talking about a lot of people. You just forget this on this board. The effort, the enthusiasm, and then the travel. I was at a match for the Women's WC in France. Those of us setting up for a section on the end had to move to get away from the overwhelming and very loud group dancing and singing in favour of Cameroon. Then, over in a corner where security tried to tell us we could not be, a group of French school girls from a local team came to help us out with the chants, because they must have thought it would be fun. Or maybe they pitied us.

Your comparing a new league that has one season under its belt to a 25 year old league, poor comparison. Compare MLS year one salaries and add inflation, they started with very low salaries like CPL in order to be sustainable and build up over time. CPL will do the same and salaries for it in 25 years will be much different.

  7. I'm just curious... has anyone seen a situation like this before? There's another Portugueese media outlet saying Eustaquio (and his teammate Costa) to Porto is confirmed for the summer, and we've seen a ton of these through the year. But on the other hand, you've got the club chairman and Mauro himself saying no discussions have taken place whatsoever. I get they have an interest in raising his price, but I don't understand how their stories could be so far apart with no comments from anyone.

  9. I'm having a hard time imagining any region of Canada remaining in any sort of lock down/under stern measures once the majority of the USA returns to whatever passes for normal down there. Not suggesting such measures aren't necessary, just calling it like I see it. I think for a lot of people Battle Fatigue is rapidly setting in and certain past policies are becoming increasingly unsustainable.

  10. Globe article states 6 provinces have verbally approved back to play protocols for CFL. But Ontario & BC haven't yet. Lisa MacLeod, Ontario’s Minister of Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture Industries said she expects the CFL to meet the required protocols and the August 5th start date seems do able. But she also said having people in the stands seems ambitious but her rationale is weak. She said it depends on vax supply (shouldn't be an issue as of next month) and rapid antigen tests (which Ontario has had for a while but haven't really deployed them). https://www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/article-macleod-says-ontario-hasnt-provided-verbal-approval-of-cfls-return-to-2/?cmpid=rss&utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter

  11. I honestly didn’t even notice that. Looked him up. Matthew Durrans has played 2 games for 1860 Munich this season and 25 matches for 1860 Munich II (according to transfermarkt). So I’d rather Elva go up because he’d probably get playing time in 2.Bundesliga, whereas I don’t think you could say the same for Durrans.

    Gold Cup 2021

And besides, if the whole reason why we need to have the Gold Cup in the USA every time, and have the tournament every 2 years instead of every 4 years is because the confederation needs more cash, then wouldn't saving money on travel make sense too? Why go through the expense of flying every team across the country when they could just sit put for the group stage?

  13. Or try living in Ontario, the only jurisdiction in the world where retired guys like me can't play golf because Ford's buddies "go for pops" after they play. I know I am being a selfish prick (for which I don't care) but how rational is that?

  14. In a society governed by rationality we'd look at the USA returning to "normal", then we'd look at ourselves and give our collective heads a shake in a sort of Taylor Twellman styled "WHAT ARE WE DOING" fashion. However, any society that deems it worthwhile to walk to your restaurant table in a mask, sit down at your table without your mask, then put your mask back on to go to the bathroom, while walking past tables of unmasked patrons, yeah that's a society that's not governed by rationality. We take the effort to mask up to go on a plane, then we undo whatever safety that provides by unmasking to eat or drink. It's not a rational way to go about things. So can I imagine any region in Canada remaining in any sort of lock down once the majority of the USA returns to "normal"? Let's just say it wouldn't surprise me. Sure half of the USA has already moved past lockdowns and stern measures for the most part, while the other half is taking a far more measured approach, but they are opening. They are slowly moving out of it while we seem to be at a standstill at best. Turn on any American MLS game and you see fans in the stands to varying degrees, meanwhile our teams play outside of Canada with no fans, even though the USA (as far as I know) is not in any different of a situation when it comes to case totals or covid deaths. The people who aren't questioning the rationality of this (or lack thereof) probably haven't hit the "Battle Fatigue" wall.

Pressure will be on Miller, as he knows he may get paid like the #1 GK, but one more slip up and he might lose the #1 spot to St Clair. And if that happens, Miller probably goes on trade block as he's making something like $400k vs St. Clair's free GA money. Competition is good for St Clair.

Considering the minutes Raposo is getting I think it's more likely he gets called into the Gold cup than defects to the Philippines. Aiden Daniels just had a pretty decent U-23 tournament so he may at least be in consideration for the GC roster too. Ditto for Metcalfe and he's still in the mix for the Whitecaps, albeit far down the midfield depth chart. He also just made his Canadian debut at any level ever, so considering that and his situation at the Whitecaps he probably won't be in a rush to leave the Canadian program.

I mean as soon as we beat Aruba and let's say we beat Suriname to go through to the next round where we would have to play Haiti in a home and away two leg playoff...we get our chance at revenge for what happened in the 2019 Gold Cup. Honestly, that is what I'm looking the most forward to first before anything.

I would add that it's cheaper to take a chance on the talent in Canada that MLS have not touch who might turn up to become gems than paying premium of MLS bencher/USL guy where you know exactly what's their max potential. If a USL guy or MLS bencher ceiling is maybe one day making the starting XI in MLS or gettting sub minutes at a premium, I'll give a 1+1 contract to 2 or 3 guys with strong stats between age 17 to 19 instead who might develop into something better since they'll be paying way more minutes with adults while not having such a short leash preventing them to play to their full potential. This is the reality of CPL 1.0 - go through the un-scouted, unknow int he pool, find the good one, create your local stars that you bought low but will sell high and surround them with increasingly better internationals to push them with the wage increase. Once we have a PROPER Division 2 under the CPL, then the league might go more elite and pursue better Canadians at a premium with stronger internationals + the better youth players. The rest will have a proper D2 to play in and try to develop further. That will be CPL 2.0

Not very long ago, less than a decade, there were MLS players who were on below subsistence salaries, living in cities other than their own. Players who could not make ends meet on an MLS salary. I mean basic, pay the bills, eat, transport. I heard this from source. As long as we solve the base salary question, as long as there is a minimum that is acceptable, then I am fine with things building from there.

Yesterday, at one point he was through on goal and had a few steps on both opposing centre backs. I thought for sure he'd score. Somehow they caught him and dispossessed him. Disappointing. Pace is not his strength, by my god can he hold the ball up well, he can shrug off challenges like its nothing, and he knows how to drop into the middle, make a good wide pass, and then sneak into the box with a late run. Incredibly useful player and as has been said, a unique talent in our pool.

I would keep an eye on the NHL for the border issue. There's guaranteed to be a Canadian team in the final 4. Suspect they'll work to get clearance to travel back and forth, and MLS can follow in it's wake.

Matthew is likely an automatic start in midfield for the Philippines. He was unlikely to even make a c or d team for Canada. I've spent a fair bit of time in the Philippines over the years as my wife is Pinoy. Have always enjoyed my time there as I'm sure Matthew will. As others have mentioned everyone speaks at least some amount of English so there is little culture shock. Also probably doesn't hurt to show case himself to Asian clubs in Korea, Japan and China.

I should add, that was probably Altidore's best match since some time in 2019 and I'm not sure it's a coincidence that it is because he came on as a sub. Even though he is making millions as a DP, I think he will last longer & be more effective and pick up fewer injuries coming on as a super-sub against tired defences after Ayo has battled against them all night. His salary might indicate starter status, but look how that has panned out this year and last.

    OneSoccer

ESPN (mostly espn+) got LaLiga rights which includes TSN/RDS for 8 years. I see maybe a couple of matches on cable with rest streamed on tsn.ca. This also means this forum will have more than one Spanish football expert. The deal also includes rights for Canada. TSN and RDS, Canada’s leading sports networks, will deliver comprehensive coverage of LaLiga matches, highlights, and news to Canadian viewers through multiple platforms, including live streaming on TSN.ca, RDS.ca, and the TSN and RDS apps. https://worldsoccertalk.com/2021/05/13/disney-confirms-espn-acquisition-of-laliga-rights-in-major-broadcast-deal/#comment-2357638 This makes BEIN shelves a bit bare. BEIN USA already has limited distribution, so it is easy for them to walk away from the US. In Canada, it may open up for OneSoccer content or more. If BEIN closes shop, a few leagues and tourney rights become available for OneSoccer. Though, it looks like BEIN is shifting to their OTT ad-supported channels in the US (and also available in Canada via certain smart tvs & Roku). beIN's new ad-driven (rather than subscription-driven) channels are seen as the future model of profitable broadcasting in the US, in light of evolving consumer habits and demands, inflated rights fees and piracy. Further, in the US the distribution landscape is increasingly challenging for independent pay-TV channels, where distributors have started demanding prohibitively unreasonable distribution terms to cover their own losses and favour their own channels. https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/bein-sports-and-laliga-agree-strategic-buy-back-deal-in-us--canada-for-final-three-seasons-301291265.html

Priso for me is the real deal and is proving it already. The other young Canadian that I think has shown well is Shaffelburgh . The verdict is still out on the other young Canadians that have played so far , but they are still young so they have time on their side . But Priso has really impressed and definitely deserves the playing time he is getting.

  42. That's certainly an interesting lineup and well explained. I'm not fully convinced by its merits but I'd be curious to see how it works in a friendly match or maybe the Gold Cup but I'd find it risky to try something so different in such a crucial match. This game is scary because there's no home-&-away and the margin for error is almost non-existent. Edit: Exactly what @dyslexic nam said. Job number 1 is to not concede.

  43. No offense taken! My bias is that I rate Larin as a centre forward, or, on the left side in a 4-4-2 and not as anything else against a quality opponent. The problem is that I rate David in that same centre forward role more than I do Larin. With two forwards I could see Larin on the left and David on the right, just as they play at club level.

    Worldwide women's news

I've been out there a couple times too watching their youth teams. Pretty high quality compared to most places. I've been to see the men a few times, the last time was years ago against Sevilla up on Montjuic before they moved. I can't remember what system they play, but one of the interesting things about their youth teams was if the play was on the far wing, they had their opposite side wingers with their feet literally on the sideline paint. The last time when I was leaving Dani Jarque it was a sunny late afternoon so I decided to walk over the train bridge and around the area and happened upon an outdoor roller hockey game with real nets and full equipment that blew my mind. I haven't been to Barcelona for a couple years now but I really miss sitting outside all night and eating amazing food and just shooting the crap with friends while the world goes by. Pretty much every night. I imagine covid would have dented that but I hope everyone can get out soon.

    CPL Stadium Thread

Sorry, but I don't agree with those spinning this for what it is said to be face value. It is a major slap in the face to Langford. All this business about it being a growth area, the stadium, the youth teams--this ignores what the club is about. Rob Friend, even when signing with Langford, was clear he was really interested in Greater Vancouver and that the deal was put together quickly to get a foot in to CPL. We forget how quickly the deal was forged, it was almost last minute. But he has never denied it was not his first choice. Langford is on the extreme end of the population of Greater Victoria. There is virtually no immediate population north and very little west and south. It is not easy to get to, nor does it have amenities to offer game day (though they do an okay job with services on site). Royal Athletic, in contrast, brings you half an hour close to the biggest municipalities in Greater Victoria (Victoria does not, in fact, have the most population, Saanich just to the north does, and by a lot), and walking-biking distance to most of Victoria. And near restaurants, pubs, with various parking options nearby (though probably not enough). If Friend and the owners are doing this, under the guise of a friendly deal with an amateur club, it is because either -1-there are things they are not happy about with Langford; -2- they have heard something from City Hall, -3- they are working on longer term plans and see Victoria downtown as a better option. Or a combination of all three.
