The CPL kicked off in Hamilton!!

  2. For comparisons - in 2019, we saw a total of 32 Canadians (2 goalies) play in the season. Last season we saw a rise up to 41 Canadians (5 goalies). Through 2 games this season we are already at 32 Canadians (2 goalies) with minutes.

  6. Back in my youth I did collect Baseball and Hockey cards. But it has become excessively expensive now. In 2010 I started doing the Panini World Cup and Euro Sticker albums. I probably won't do this year's Euro album as it is stupid expensive. If a Panini MLS Sticker album existed I would probably do it. Never really realized that you could get actual cards for the current set of players. I may have to start collecting again. Not sure if it interests anyone. But Canada did make the 1986 World Cup. Meaning they are in the Panini album. In the past I have seen completed albums for fairly cheap.

  7. And here I am, twenty-plus years later, trying once again to help you to understand why that is wrong. <sigh> The example of the Tigers is great because it is exactly what I (and others) have been arguing should happen all along. Rather than restrict their "target audience" to a specific national group, they have decided to be inclusive of all and play under the name BC Tigers. This honours the club's origins without falling into the "Canadians don't like soccer" trope which is reinforced when using objectively national names. If you name your team after a foreign nation, you are saying that the team is not for Canadians. So no, there can be no complaint about BC Tigers, well not about ethnic identity. I would be happy to slam them for claiming to represent all of BC.

  8. I see a wide variation on those prices too. Never imagined it. I have 05-06 quite complete, but no Julián de Guzmán, just a gap. 06-07 quite empty, and no Julian. I did not do these albums, my son did, and he was 6-7 years old. But the following year, 07-08, we do have him (same page as Mista in fact):

  10. That's stellar, because we know at some point we are definitely going to see the following: Tabla, Bair, Ricketts, Bayiha, Assi And more than likely we'll see: Morgan, Hasal, Pantemis, Montgomery, Choiniere So at minimum we probably reach 42. There may also be players coming back from loan or perhaps an unforeseen surprise or two. We probably come shy of reaching 50 players getting MLS minutes this season, but what a mile stone that'll be when it comes!

Eustaquio aside, this seems like a pretty thin pool of players. A couple of guys either in or out of MLS and Elva in Europe, but at 24-25 years old, you would hope for a couple more standouts.

With all due respect, I think those guys are overcomplicating things a bit. Davies played much more as a pure midfielder/attacker against Bermuda, and Adekugbe did not slot in beside the centre backs as a structure. In no sense of the term did Davies play as a "wing back" versus Bermuda. If you compare average positions from the Bermuda match to how Chelsea play under Tuchel, they don't overlap. It is fair to say that Laryea played higher than Adekugbe, but that's not to say that Adekugbe played as a centre back, and certainly not in the way Azpilicueta does when he plays beside a dedicated central defender. Platt's general point that Adekugbe was more conservative than Laryea is true, but him calling Sam a hybrid full back/centre back is just incorrect imo. Whether this is a meaningful debate is another question. When Canada did show a back three shape in possession, it was as Galindo showed against the Cayman Islands: with Piette splitting the centre backs.

  13. Top work, @Shway ! I mimic what others say, it was hard to find the perfect balance between professional experience/potential. Looking forward to see how this ages in the months/years to come!!

  14. And if soccer was a popular spectator sport built into the DNA of sporting culture in Canada as it is in England, we could have whatever names we wanted. For whatever historical reasons, selling professional soccer in Canada is an uphill battle and the branding and marketing of clubs needs to build support, not alienate potential ticket buyers.

Why is everyone so desperate to get rid of Adekugbe? He's been great for us, and he times his runs better than any of our other fullbacks imo. Pasher looks great so far, but he's a winger now, and he's definitely not better technically than Adekugbe. Plus, we have Guti and Miller who do have MLS experience as lb's. We have a lot of promise on the wing, but not enough quality yet to play someone like Pasher out of position. As things stand, Pasher, Millar and Buchanan aren't very far apart, even if the latter 2 have higher ceilings.

  17. Moreirense are safe from relegation. They cannot qualify for the Champions League. They cannot qualify for the Europa League. There are 5 matches left. Their next match is a big one if they want to sneak into that 6th spot and qualify for the Europa Conference League. They have very little travel left in their schedule (even by Portugal standards) so hopefully they can make a big push. The more #CanMNT players playing European football, the better!

  18. Hopefully Paços de Ferreira can turn things around and finish the season on a high. There are 5 matches left. They cannot be relegated. They cannot qualify for the Champions League. They cannot qualify for the Europa League (Benfica cannot drop below 4th place, so if Braga wins the Taça de Portugal, the spot would go to Braga/Benfica) Paços de Ferreira are basically fighting to hold onto their current 5th place and qualify for the Europa Conference League. Braga is the only top 4 team they have to face before the end of the season and they have very little travel left (even by Portugal standards). Let's hope they can hold their spot.

Crazy to think this U17 squad made the WC with youth stars like Bustos, Boakai, Froese and Hamilton. Yet the ones who will or may figure for the MNT were not part of that cycle i.e. Eustaquio, Elva and Waterman.

I think their point was that for the majority of the game it was very lobsided with Adekugbe playing more conservative, basically playing in line with the centre backs (not really tucked in) giving Davies the freedom to go create/do whatever tf he wanted. He did venture forward at times though. In that way you can see it as a 3 person backline, but technically it wasn't the 3-5-2 system. Their foundation was still a 4-4-2.

Peter Schaale and other Wanderers players are doing some similar work back home by promoting COVID testing. Great to see the teams doing what they can to promote the measures needed to get us all back on track. And if a successful vaccination campaign in MB leads to a bubble tournament at IG Field to kick off the season, well then that would just be a happy coincidence.

  35. So I have talked about making a card post for a while now - but then I keep ordering more cards and thinking I will wait until they’ll get here. Now I am realizing that they will never all get here, because I keep ordering more cards. It is a vicious circle. So I thought I would just throw it out there to see if anyone else shares the interest/hobby - specifically with a focus on Canadian players. It started off with a simple $4 eBay purchase of a Jonathan David sticker. It very quickly spiralled out of control and now some sort of intervention is probably warranted. Let that be a warning to you. How it all started:

I think this is accurate. I think comparisons to Chelsea or other teams that play with a back 3 in and out of possession aren't useful. Herdman has played a lopsided 442 for a little while now after starting with a 433. We only have to look back to the win against the USA to see how we line up defensively. In that match we had Kamal Miller at left back, a guy who is naturally a centre back. He played much more conservatively than Laryea, but he was still definitely a left back. IMO those tweets about Canada's hybrid shapes are essentially red herrings. Many people say formations are overrated, and I simultaneously agree and disagree with that statement. Formations in a vacuum are certainly overrated, but how the two teams line up geographically is often a significant part of the story of a match. Doing some analysis about how Canada's shape oscillates between a back four and back three against the Cayman Islands, however, is not helpful or predictive -- especially if one tries to argue that was consistent with how Canada played versus Bermuda. Anyway, sorry for derailing the Pasher thread.

    Nike?

Does anyone know the reason why the woman were given a different jersey from the men’s team? I would understand that in a World Cup year, but I’m confused as to why they didn’t wear the maple leaf jersey in their recent WCQ. It’s not as if the jerseys were only tailored to for a woman’s body....I’m confused. Still no ad 19 option to buy their ambassadors/our marque players jersey...Nike has been on par with Umbro and has more leverage - not impressed.

I’m mostly basing that off FIFA rankings and projection for the future. We’re already ahead of them in ranking and I expect us to move up drastically in the next few years because our talent far exceeds our ranking. I don’t see much reason that they’re ranked too low. They have 1 player in Serie A but other than that, I don’t think they’re really on our level.
