worth checking out but Hamilton has high praise for the talent in that area but took big shots at the old management... for not playing the kids. On a few occasions he’s praised current management for backing the kids and playing them. makes you wonder how good some guys would have turned out if TFC had of taken youth development seriously. he goes on to essentially back Rollins who once said Roma was impressed with the raw talent in the area, saying that Ontario teams always competed world wide talent wise. That’s a bold statement.

Looked up the Turkish league stats. Looks like Hutch is 5th in the league for assists. He doesn't take corners, which is how many players rack up assists, so mostly due to vision and good passing.

If you think about it are we really surprised in the end? Scored in college, scored so many goals in the MLS at such a young age. If you look at most of the great strikers they all have a history of scoring a lot of goals at every level and every league that they have played in . It was 2004 I was coaching an under 9 Rep team at the West Niagara tournament near Grimsby Ontario . We were playing 7 a side soccer, the North York Cosmos team I was coaching we were playing against Brampton Youth . Game starts and I notice the Brampton team was short one player with no bench , 10 minutes into the game I see 5 players running towards the Brampton bench , players that were late to the game . Five minutes later 3 of those late players are subbed on and one is this big imposing looking 9 year old who eventually went on to score a few goals and beat us by 2 or three goals if I remember correctly. That tournament published a tournament program with a list of all the teams and each of their players names in it. Years later when Larin was starting to be known I think he was still in College and I noticed his age and early youth teams he played with, I found that program to see if I could find his name in that program. I looked at there he was listed under Brampton Youth U9 team lol. Yup that kid who could have scored a lot more than the 2 or 3 he scored against my team in that tournament was none other than Kyle Larin .

  12. A preliminary look at the Gold Cup 1) Preparation: It looks like the mandatory FIFA release period for all teams (even those not in the preliminaries) might be Monday, June 28th! https://resources.fifa.com/image/upload/circular-no-1727-updates-to-the-men-s-and-women-s-international-match-calendars.pdf?cloudid=epsntxax0fozi4foovyw https://resources.fifa.com/image/upload/men-s-international-match-calendar-2020-2024.pdf?cloudid=cd3qpcttmbbjowbso2tz Even if it's only the usual 10 days before ( June 30th ) we still have time for one friendly. As in the previous edition, the CSA cannot schedule a friendly match within a 161km radius ( 100 miles) of any of the match venues: https://stconcacafwp001.blob.core.windows.net/media/vu5ahqsc/2021_concacaf_gold_cup_regulation_-_eng.pdf If we do play one, we'd want to go the closed-door route, so an opponent that wouldn't draw big crowds anyways seems a likely choice. I can easily picture us playing Curaçao or Grenada. 2) The squad: A 60-man preliminary roster is due 30 days prior to start of the competition ( this is Thursday, June 10th soon after our match vs Suriname on Tuesday, June 8th). Unlike for Olympic Qualifying, this preliminary roster is binding. The final 23-man roster is due 10 days prior to start of the competition (this is June 30th). https://stconcacafwp001.blob.core.windows.net/media/vu5ahqsc/2021_concacaf_gold_cup_regulation_-_eng.pdf 3) The schedule: Since 2019 was also a 16 team tournament, we can use that old calendar to extrapolate the dates for 2021. Group A July 10th July 14th July 18th Group B (our group) Sunday, July 11th Thursday, July 15th Monday, July 19th Group C July 12th July 16th July 20th Group D July 13th July 17th July 21st Rest days: July 22nd & July 23rd Saturday July 24th - QF for teams that were in pots A & B ? Sunday, July 25th - QF for teams that were in pots C & D ? Rest day: July 26th Tuesday, July 27th - SF for teams that were in pots A & B ? Wednesday, July 28th - SF for teams that were in pots C & D ? Rest days: July 29th, July 30th & July 31st Final: August 1st The only unusual thing is that the above schedule would force the USA and Mexico to face each other in the semi-finals or even the quarter-finals! 4) Match venues: Where will our matches be held? In COVID times, trying to hold matches outside the USA seems very unlikely. This will be a USA-only-hosted tournament. CONCACAF want to have fans and will likely look at the following: https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/29910246/where-32-nfl-teams-stands-allowing-fans-stadiums https://www.sportbusiness.com/news/three-additional-us-states-move-to-allow-fan-attendance/ Mexico matches aside, CONCACAF generally likes it when soccer specific stadiums are used. Likely candidates Toyota Stadium in Frisco (Dallas area) have cleared their calendar and will host. https://www.fcdallas.com/schedule?year=2021 BBVA Stadium in Houston have cleared their calendar and will host. https://www.houstondynamofc.com/post/2021/03/24/houston-dynamo-fc-announce-2021-regular-season-schedule Paypal Park in San Jose is hosting no matches between May 22nd and July 24th! (The Earthquakes are even hosting a match at the Stanford Stadium to do this! EDIT: To host the CONCACAF Nations League Finals & a Gold Cup group stage match? ) https://www.sjearthquakes.com/schedule The maybes Orlando could host an early group stage match https://www.orlandocitysc.com/post/2021/03/24/orlando-city-sc-announces-2021-regular-season-schedule-presented-orlando-health The brand new Q2 stadium in Austin could host a group stage game. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Q2_Stadium https://www.austinfc.com/schedule and they said they wanted to host here: https://www.mlssoccer.com/news/austin-fc-submits-bid-host-2021-concacaf-gold-cup-future-ncaa-college-cup-new Chicago ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SeatGeek_Stadium ) could host DC could host https://www.dcunited.com/schedule The old Colombus crew stadium could host https://ww.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historic_Crew_Stadium but new one almost certainly won't: https://www.columbuscrewsc.com/schedule The brand new West End stadium in Cincinnati could host a group stage match or a QF match https://www.fccincinnati.com/schedule https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_End_Stadium LAFC (Banc of California Stadium) won't host https://www.lafc.com/schedule/ but LA Galaxy (Dignity Health Sports Park) will likely host a later group stage match or QF match https://www.lagalaxy.com/schedule?year=2021 Red Bull in NJ and Suburu Park in Pennsylvania could host QF matches https://www.newyorkredbulls.com/schedule/ https://www.philadelphiaunion.com/schedule/matches The rumour is that Las Vegas will host the final match ( https://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allegiant_Stadium ) Those venues unlikely to host Not in Miami (which will be the host venue for the preliminaries https://www.intermiamicf.com/en/schedule ) Unlikely Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Denver https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dick's_Sporting_Goods_Park https://www.coloradorapids.com/schedule Minnesota, Utah and Kansas seem unlikely too: https://www.mnufc.com/schedule https://www.rsl.com/schedule https://www.sportingkc.com/schedule My best guess is that we will likely see a situation unlike previous years where a group will play their first AND their second match at the same venue to minimize travel and make bubbles easier. You just can't have all the flying around that we had in previous years this time around.

  23. Nice find, and good goal for him: they are in the playoff round, winner of their group goes to the u-19 finals in Spain. They play Atlético Madrid next week and then Real Madrid the last weekend of the month. Issey started and subbed out m. 63 as Tàrrega fell at home 0-1 to Atletic Sant Just; they also played and lost midweek, 1-2, with Issey playing the last 30 minutes. I'll go see him play at the end of the month when they visit a team in Barcelona, Tàrrega is a bit far, an hour and half drive, and we can't go into that region from where I am due to new restrictions.

I am sure there are lots of variables. Could be wages in comparison to what they will give to the team, where coaches see their potential. Maybe Valour coaches didn't see Campbell as a good long term fit or the other way around. Maybe they have better prospects and targets. One thing is for sure there is no doubt just being a professional Canadian footballer doesn't guarantee you a CPL spot, nor should it.

I think it’s probably pretty fair to say that Ontario develops a lot of high quality youth players - to the age of 16 or 17. Then there remains this big problem of how to get them to pros. There is a tremendous amount of talent coming up that either dies on the vine, goes to another country for development or gets caught in the TFC Academy quagmire. If I was a scout in Europe, Ontario is one of the great untapped markets.

Amen to that! The CFL missed the boat a long time ago to spread outwards rather than get to big to expand. There's no reason why they shouldn't have teams in London, KW, Windsor, Quebec, etc, and be sustainable off crowds of 5-10K. London Knights get 8-9k regularly for as many games are in a hockey season! Sure you can't afford multi-100k contracts, but that's okay. It would still be the largest pro league thats totally Canadian. Soccer has the opportunity to do exactly that.

PVR’d the match and watched it last night. Atiba was all over the pitch; sometimes just behind the strikers and sometimes as a bit of a right back. It’s ridiculous how good he is at 38 playing every game in a packed schedule. The key thing I noticed was his ball retention; I wish he was just 1% as much appreciated by Canadian sports fans as fans of the clubs he has played for.

    Covid talk

We don't know yet what the impacts are on consumer spending over the long term. Were they just going along with the global financial system and simply lucked out by eliminating covid 19? No, I don't see it that way: Unlike Canada, I am more inclined to believe that eliminating covid 19 is a realistic goal for New Zealand, as it's an isolated island nation. It's therefore easier for me to consider their narrative around lockdowns as more genuine than ours. I also believe expansionary monetary policy would have been necessary in NZ regardless of whether they locked down or not, because the economy was standing at the edge of the cliff (same story everywhere). Thirdly, I believe that locking down pushed the economy over the edge and the expansionary monetary policy is what's currently keeping the country on life support, while they re-inflating assets in the meantime (same story everywhere). Unlike Canada, NZ is highly dependent on international tourism, which went from 20% of exports in 2019 to basically zero in 2020. Therefore, NZ has a fairly big hole soaking up some of that stimulus, which Canada doesn't. If Canada opened domestically like New Zealand, I imagine consumer inflation would run a little hotter, since our hole is much smaller. So that may be a factor in delaying our opening relative to theirs. The powers that be may be a little more hesitant to open up like New Zealand, not only because of inflationary concerns, but also because we haven't eliminated the virus like New Zealand. Would they open the economy in Canada tomorrow if the virus disappeared? I honestly don't know, but I bet it would depend on what the finance people want to do, at least in part. They must have a seat at the table. What about the pharmaceutical industry? They obviously bring an agenda to the table too. What about political factors for lockdowns? What about those agendas? The lockdowns are clearly multifaceted, with some differences depending on country, but to me it is logical that many agendas are at play. That's true about most things in life. I know some will read "agenda" and suggest I am implying this whole thing is nefarious, but that's not necessarily the case. It may be, or it may quite simply be different stakeholders working together while looking out for their own interests. Nothing more or less. Very few things in life are as simple as the narrative you are being sold though, that I am certain. Hell, look at John Herdman and his work with the Canadian program? Do you really think he's isn't also building his network so he can slang a few used cars down the road? First he sells you on Canada Soccer, but that's just getting his foot in the door! 😁 In all seriousness though, hopefully I addressed your question well. I also hope I communicated my stance for @El Hombre at the same time. To me it seems the lockdowns are about more than eliminating the virus. In terms of probabilities that just seems more likely than not. Do I know that for sure? No. Do I know all the linkages between the various agendas and the innerworkings of what's going on? No, but simply questioning the narrative is an easy position to take. It's fun to think about and speculate, at least for me. For others it's easier to put your faith in the narrative you are being sold, and not everyone cares to approach this with a dose of skepticism. Fair enough!

You're absolutely right about the lost opportunity. Places like Quebec and London have strong local football fans and Windsor's got little else (aside from Detroit baseball in the summer). That said, the logistics are still pretty problematic for CFL-style football. It is that CFL football is expensive to run. You've got teams and training staff that are bigger than any hockey or soccer team, yet playing 10-12 home games to recoup the money. CFL exists because of its deal with TSN and the big (consistent) crowds from the clubs mostly in the West. It's also run by a lot of guys who remember when CFL used to regularly draw 40-50K to games in places like Montreal, Toronto and Edmonton and don't want to give up that vision. CPL can avoid those conceits and actually run a league that doesn't have either, yet has the opportunity to grow.

  42. Two things were created in the past 3 years: Nations League & covid 19. Post 2000, either Canada was living off winning the Gold Cup or we were more interested in glory hunting vs having camps. Post 2022, Nations League will again take up some of the windows. But not having to qualify for 2026 will mean friendlies will make a comeback.

  45. The draw is on Wednesday, April 21st at 4am Eastern / 1am Pacific. I won't be watching live! Match #2 of China vs South Korea & Cameroon vs Chile are both this upcomming Tuesday. By Tuesday afternoon we will know the field. The new rankings come out on Friday, April 16th. Those are the ones that will be used. https://img.fifa.com/image/upload/ipv0vqlyvdyxstuwdshs.pdf If we use current rankings (Dec 2020) it would be: https://www.fifa.com/fifa-world-ranking/ranking-table/women/ Japan (host) USA Netherlands ----- Sweden Team GB Australia ------ Brazil Canada China / South Korea --------- New Zealand Chile / Cameroon Zambia With those draw procedures, based on current rankings, The Netherlands would need to face Australia (the only non-European team in Pot #2). Pia Sundhage decided to have a training camp during this current window for the Brazil Team without any actual matches. https://www.cbf.com.br/selecao-brasileira/noticias/selecao-feminina/pia-sundhage-prega-por-unidade-e-espirito-coletivo-durante-periodo-pre This might actually pay off because because Australia just lost to Germany in a friendly and if they lose to The Netherlands too, I'm pretty sure Brazil will overtake them and be in Pot 2. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_Women's_World_Rankings
