I wonder if sometimes we read too much into these things.] I think being recruited by other players may be a deciding factor in Dias choosing Canada, look at the Portuguese influence on the recent Canada teams, Raposo, Nogueira, Godhino, Vitoria, Eustaquio and Ferreira. Dias also seems to be friends with Corbeanu. In the announcement that Ferreira had committed to Canada wasn

Agreed. I desperately wished the CPL would rub off on the CFL. I've never understood why the CFL tries to look like a "big" league on television. It's not the NFL and never will be. Imagine a CFL with 12 teams. Some teams with a 30 0000 seat stadium and others with a 5000 seat stadium. Would that be economically impossible? I'm done with supporting leagues that I cant afford to physically attend on a regular basis. If that means I'm not watching the best of the best so be it. Man I miss live sports.

    Ferdi Kadioglu

My take on him is that he will most likely play for Turkey where his club side is and his family roots are as he is likely not good enough for the Dutch side. That being said, he may not be good enough to be a regular for the Turkish national side either at the moment. If he’s smart, he focuses on his club side for the next year and establishes himself as a regular starter which likely will get him into the Turkish national team picture. O/w he risks switching and not playing, and then he is screwed. I don’t think we really see him in a Canadian shirt unless (1) he doesn’t really develo

Amen to that! The CFL missed the boat a long time ago to spread outwards rather than get to big to expand. There's no reason why they shouldn't have teams in London, KW, Windsor, Quebec, etc, and be sustainable off crowds of 5-10K. London Knights get 8-9k regularly for as many games are in a hockey season! Sure you can't afford multi-100k contracts, but that's okay. It would still be the largest pro league thats totally Canadian. Soccer has the opportunity to do exactly that.

Just a general update: 1) He is still getting regular playing time, with Fenerbahçe, often as a sub. 2) The Turkish manager Senol Günes indeed spoke with him late last summer: https://www.telegraaf.nl/sport/1030474633/ferdi-kadioglu-oranje-gaat-het-lastig-krijgen-tegen-turkije Kadıoğlu declined to file his switch then. 3) Still with The Netherlands U21. They had 3 matches in March: Did not play in the 1st match. https://www.uefa.com/under21/match/2030673--romania-vs-netherlands/ Came on for the injured Noa Lang at the 22nd minute in the 2nd match. https://www.ue

Glad they got the win, I see Liam came on m. 66. If they can nab a promotion playoff spot, which they can only do with wins, that will really strengthen his case, as I see it. It is not just about how he performs, it is the team as well.

This. Can’t be understated the amount of big goals he scored this season. Essentially all his goals were very meaningful. To be fair, Lille didn’t have many blowout victories but he did find the net against some of their top rivals. Big moment player.

The whole XFL thing threatens what I love about the CFL - being independent and Canadian. These are the exact same reasons I'm a CPL fan when I never was a soccer fan previously - it's ours, subservient to nobody. I haven't been able to bring myself to read any of the articles ever since the XFL-CFL rumours started. Just comments in passing like this thread. It feels like if I look, I'll see my heart being ripped out. I've been so invested in the Ticats for so long and if we move to some bastardized 4-down US league - I don't think I'll be able to follow. In my opinion

  20. The reality is that the Canada of the next 10 years is unlike any other team we have had. A smart player with good advisors would recognize that. David and Davies alone represent a quantum leap in quality. Throw in the other young talents like Corbeanu, Buchanan, possibly Akinola, etc., and we could be a contender for years to come. Not saying we are going to outshine Portugal or anything but we should be seen as a viable option for aspiring players.

David was obviously sidelined, but Lille beat Metz 2-0 with goals from Yilmaz and Celik. That gives the a 6 point lead on PSG, who have a game in hand and play Strasbourg tomorrow. Lyon and Monaco round out the top 4. Lille play Lyon on the 25th. Lyon also play Monaco one more time during the run-in. I think that is the only other clash among the top 4. Gonna be a tight finish but that win against PSG was pretty crucial.

Hoillet would have fit in perfectly with the majority of the current Jamaican team. He fits their profile - not born there, never having stepped foot in the country prior to playing a match!

The other thing to consider too is that Akinola is banking on his own ability to crack the US squad, in his mind he may full on believe he can be better than the current group that the US has upfront, and that’s ok.

Hoilet was still wanted by Jamaica, and he was 25 when he committed to us, not quite as bad as the others mentioned. I think one of the knocks on Ayo is the fact he is playing for a CDN team. I can understand Hoilet/Deguz etc playing/living overseas and getting swept up and wanting to choose that country. But Akinola is in TO, he still lives here and it seems like he cant decide. For me thats a bit harder to swallow.

How are both of these comments from the same person less than a half hour apart? What am I missing? Vitoria and Arfield only wanted to wear the maple leaf when nobody else wanted them. Same with Hoilett as Nolando mentioned. Why would you want to shut the door on Akinola but not for the guys who preceded him? These other guys were a lot older when they eventually accepted the call up than Akinola would be at the 2022 World Cup.

Speaking of wingers being converted to full backs, he's playing rb pretty much every game now. I think it suits him a lot better at this level - he makes some nice runs to the inside from deep, and his pace is more obvious when he's not dealing with a defender. He'd probably be... 4th on our RB list? I think he deserves a call for the Gold Cup. He's improving.

It looks like a record number of Jamaica refs have been selected. https://www.loopjamaica.com/content/five-jamaican-officials-selected-2021-concacaf-gold-cup Seeing as our group doesn't include Jamaica and is the only one without a (majority) Spanish speaking country in it, I say that our odds are pretty good that we will have at least one Jamaican ref for at least one Group Stage match.

Feel free to call me crazy, but for a long time I have felt like there has been a noticeable difference in sports injury terminology from Europe vs. North America, with European (often translated) injuries sounding more serious. For example, we may use the term 'pulled muscle' while they would use 'torn muscle' for the same injury. In this case, we may use 'severe ankle sprain' but they use 'ruptured ankle ligament' (I do understand this may still be quick recovery time for a 'severe ankle sprain'). I'm no doctor or anything, but just a feeling I've gotten over the years. Has anyone else

  39. If they went with the "east-west" alignment it looks like they might have a restricted view issue because the Marquis Downs grandstand isn't long enough to run along the entire side of a soccer pitch. Having it at the end with a large space in front means everybody in the expensive glassed-in part can easily see the whole field of play when looking straight on.

I suspect if they lose to us in June in World Cup qualifying, they bring mostly their A squad for the Gold Cup as they won’t be playing competitive matches again for awhile. Same with us, if we lose to them, we will bring our A squad to the Gold Cup minus some veterans who wouldn’t be around for 26

ESPN's 1/3 ownership of TSN plays a big part in this. They just show everything ESPN has already produced rather than producing anything themselves that's not a guaranteed ratings win. That's why TSN airs so much garbage like mid-major college football, bowling, NCAA hockey, even Korean baseball.

Yeah, I think the issue becomes when one only views a player of a certain ethnicity through that lens, and assumes the player can not contain the opposite positive attribute e.g. black players are athletic so they can't be clever, white players work hard so they can't be athletic, etc. Lol he was at the end of his career and barely got any minutes (not that he was expected to). Lin had a solid career with a pretty good peak, certainly better than his (lack of) draft position and opportunity. Not sure what the models would have missed, that he would be ineffective (but winning a ring :P

  46. Ahh thanks guys @Ozzie_the_parrot @yellowsweatygorilla. I just don't understand the purpose of creating something similar to L10, PLSQ but then looking for a different designation, that would essentially be lower than those leagues. It's overall confusing, as you can tell. It's not going to change the structure in Ontario or Quebec with guys who play L10/PLSQ, and then leave to go to U-Sports or NCAA. So if it's just a shorter season being the difference, why would the CSA sanction it as something different - when theoretically it's not.
