I want to point out how ridiculous it is to suggest Marky Delgado is nothing more than just hustle. That's kinda like saying Sam Piette is nothing more than just hustle. Delgado is not my favorite, but that seems like an unnecessary dig that isn't even very accurate, even though I get it because Delgado has a great "motor". By the way, is describing a white player as having a great motor the equivalent of describing a black player as being "powerful"? Someone let me know... Anyways, as far as Schaffleburg goes, I liked what I saw from him. Worked his tail off and players with that co

Hoilet was still wanted by Jamaica, and he was 25 when he committed to us, not quite as bad as the others mentioned. I think one of the knocks on Ayo is the fact he is playing for a CDN team. I can understand Hoilet/Deguz etc playing/living overseas and getting swept up and wanting to choose that country. But Akinola is in TO, he still lives here and it seems like he cant decide. For me thats a bit harder to swallow.

One thing I really love about Osorio is that he works his tail off to improve his game. He was just an attacking midfielder and not a playmaker when he first joined TFC. Now he's extremely versatile, and he has significantly improved his defensive and stamina.

Speaking of wingers being converted to full backs, he's playing rb pretty much every game now. I think it suits him a lot better at this level - he makes some nice runs to the inside from deep, and his pace is more obvious when he's not dealing with a defender. He'd probably be... 4th on our RB list? I think he deserves a call for the Gold Cup. He's improving.

TBH, playing Haiti is something I look forward to. From now on, I want to punish them for the GC result every single time we play them. We shouldn’t lose to them. We shouldn’t draw against them. We should beat them. Consistently.

The whole XFL thing threatens what I love about the CFL - being independent and Canadian. These are the exact same reasons I'm a CPL fan when I never was a soccer fan previously - it's ours, subservient to nobody. I haven't been able to bring myself to read any of the articles ever since the XFL-CFL rumours started. Just comments in passing like this thread. It feels like if I look, I'll see my heart being ripped out. I've been so invested in the Ticats for so long and if we move to some bastardized 4-down US league - I don't think I'll be able to follow. In my opinion

Like I keep saying in a sport like soccer where you get all the time waisting, the diving , where usually one or two goals a game are the norm it’s probably the one sport out of all sports that needs VAR I’m sorry . Yes the idiots can still get it wrong after a review but at least it was looked at. The worst feeling when your watching your team play without VAR is when say a player was clearly offside for example and the goal stands because there is no VAR and the game is decided on that one goal. Just the fact that the ref has no way of looking at the play again even if they wanted to is frus

Ya I think that might have been it with Segota , also think his indoor team went deep into the indoor finals , think he was playing with the San Diego Sockers and they were a dynasty in the old MISL winning so many championships. MISL season was similar to the NHL going from October to May . Keep in mind back then in 1986 there was no real outdoor American or Canadian league or North American League , the old NASL had folded in 1984 where a lot of the 1986 Canadian World Cup players had played . Indoor soccer MISL was pretty big back then some teams in the US were outdrawing their NHL teams .

  18. I know that CSA/DeVos & CSB have been involved in the D2 discussion since the beginning. The talk this league won't be sanctioned and out of their scope is absurd. CSB has interest in the league and will buy it after 22 or 23 if it works out. There is a franchise fee to play + standards including game-day experience, social media, U23 mins, broadcasting &c. People should realize that clubs playing in this have history and older than CPL teams by a century in some cases. There's nothing wrong with building path ways from grass-roots to D2 so why this is spun as something bad for

PVR’d the match and watched it last night. Atiba was all over the pitch; sometimes just behind the strikers and sometimes as a bit of a right back. It’s ridiculous how good he is at 38 playing every game in a packed schedule. The key thing I noticed was his ball retention; I wish he was just 1% as much appreciated by Canadian sports fans as fans of the clubs he has played for.

At the end of the day, I would separate issues of how VAR is applied from the idea of whether or not it should be applied. Those are very different questions. I can reject the idea that it is being used correctly in some cases (like the millimetre offside call) while still accepting the significant value of over-turning glaringly incorrect decisions. I am in the camp that sees human reffing errors as wholly negative and I will advocate for mechanisms to eliminate them - including VAR. but that doesn’t mean that the implementation of VAR shouldn’t be subjected to scrutiny and fine tun

On the face, sure I read an interesting article about Jeremy Lin a little while ago. They spoke to an GM (Daryl Morey) who said that their models showed him to be a mid first round pick who was super athletic, but that he believed that Lin was unathletic. Morey didn't draft Lin (no one did), and Morey candidly said that the only reason he can think of that he believed Lin was unathletic is because he is Asian. Goes to show just how powerful prejudices are, that a team would pass on a guy (presumably) due to his race, even if they know it makes sense to pick him up. The cream doesn't

But MLS draft position really means little. A huge number of those players flame out. He literally had to try out for TFC and come to camp before getting a contract. He was borderline hanging onto a spot in the league at that stage. I would credit Vanney for giving him the opportunity and seeing fullback was where his skills could be best used. I’d be interested to hear what Osorio thinks of Vanney. He really had to put in his time to earn playing time and basically was preparing to look elsewhere at the end of his contract until some injuries pushed him up the rotation and he had a caree

His strengths are his speed, positioning and ability to make the right runs. If he develops his IQ further and works on his technical ability like his crossing accuracy, passing, he can make it far IMO. His ceiling could be someone in David Beckham's mold, a guy that is 100% technique but he will need to work really hard to get there.

I see the biggest risk here where a stereotype takes the place of actually looking and scouting a player. Because that takes time and effort a lot of people would be better served by adjusting their answers (eg. this player MAY be like that player). That said the narrative of racial stereotypes for athletes in some ways has gotten larger than actually occurrence of said stereotyping. The motivation (anti-racist) isn't bad but some of those descriptors are accurate of players who fall into those respective categories and not true for others. You can't or don't accurately describe players

How are both of these comments from the same person less than a half hour apart? What am I missing? Vitoria and Arfield only wanted to wear the maple leaf when nobody else wanted them. Same with Hoilett as Nolando mentioned. Why would you want to shut the door on Akinola but not for the guys who preceded him? These other guys were a lot older when they eventually accepted the call up than Akinola would be at the 2022 World Cup.

That's interesting. Really good example of prejudice at play, how they can blind you, and how they can be to your detriment. That said, in the specific situation where a commentator is describing a player in a positive context, I don't see an issue, but that would be "on the face" of it. Although spoken in a positive context at the time, we have the tendency to digest these often-repeated descriptors and re-interpret them in a negative light, therefore losing sight of the original context, or even re-imagining the context as negative, just because we feel negative about them in retrospect

Interesting suggestion. For me the problem is how granular they get on some of the calls. Offsides is a great example. If someone is offside by a micrometer and the ref missed it, is that clear and obvious? The clear and obvious standard gets subjectively applied as well, which I would argue is problematic.

If you're speaking about 2017, I mean they won everything that year with Delgado in the lineup. You can't fault Vanney for that. Also 2011-2017 Oso was not as versatile or tactically astute as he is now. Based on what I recall, Oso always saw himself as a no. 10 but he never really had the end product for it. He seems to have a career rethink around 2017 working on his defensive commitments. Obviously now, he's better in most facets than Delgado.

  40. But D2 and D3 are just arbitrary labels. In this case D2 refers to being sanctioned by CSA and D3 by provincial bodies. It's purely an administrative piece that this is a D2 league as they have teams in multiple jurisdictions. Given the players they intend to target, it's going to be equivalent to L1O/PLSQ. I also don't understand the negative spin on reddit.

For me personally, without VAR I can understand mistakes and I can forgive them. When there is VAR and a there is a bad call or a missed call it magnifies the frustration. That's another part of why I dislike it so much. But anyways, I'll leave it at that. I know I'm in the minority and I'll probably have to put up with years of tinkering and trying to improve the refereeing until it's good enough or I am used to it.

As much as I think Vanney was short sighted, he probably isnt any worse than a lot of MLS managers. The whole organization has to be behind it. The worst part is, TFC sinks plenty of money into the academy, has plenty of good prospects (tons of talent coming out of the area) but never seems to have enough faith in the kids. And it doesnt have to be a crazy youth movement, just a couple of comfort food players out the door. Skip just a couple late 20 journeymen for a couple kids. Endoh for Shaff/Nelsen/Rutty, Mullins for Perruza/Hamilton, Maybe you are a bit worse off, but maybe one of tho

I agree about the players needing to be more aggressive, I still remember my Jay Chapman rant from a few years ago about how he thought it was acceptable to receive a pass, dribble a couple of yards before lateral passing to someone else when he made his first or second senior appearance for TFC. Obviously Okello is not like that but he should watch Ajax's game today and see Gravenberch, how he's all over the place, putting a leg into everything within a 5 yard radius of him. As for the necessity of loan arrangements for up and comers? I don't know. There are clubs in Europe that h

With 5 subs for a whole season and the usual players who are made of glass (Altidore, Mavinga, etc.) and a "run your bloody heart out with a press" style, we are probably going to see a lot of minutes for a lot of different players this season, including the Yanks we don't fancy much. Hopefully not much of Dorsey (the one TFC player to not make a positive contribution to yesterday's game), but if he continues to show absolutely nothing and results don't go TFC's way, he will resume his seat in the press box.

Larin's best position isn't as a number 9, Cavallini's is but a hat trick against a national Sunday league team isn't much to write home about and if Vancouver can't get it together his play will suffer, David's best position isn't as a 9 but he's the second best 9 in the region, and Corbeanu isn't a 9 either. He's our 3rd best 9 and another successful MLS campaign where he gets to double digits will probably put him on par with Cavallini, or close enough that him being 8 years younger makes him more important.

Like it or hate it at least when a ball crosses the line they can go to VAR and see if it was a goal or not . Moreover, at least they can have a look at controversial calls like the famous offside call against the US in that famous Gold Cup game , it doesn’t mean they will get it right even after they look at it but at least they have the option to go look at it .The worst feeling is when there is no VAR you know they can’t go have a look at it again because there is no VAR.
