Not to pile on, but I am defending the maple leaf on this one. Larin played at Sigma until he was 18 (and played in Canada up until that time). Playing 39 games in NCAA doesn’t diminish that. Davies came up through the Edmonton youth system and then made the jump to pro in Vancouver. David played all of his youth soccer in Canada until moving to Gent at 18. Corbeanu had the most developmental time in another country and that was just the last couple of years. Before that he played youth soccer in Canada, including time in the TFC academy system. In every one of those cases, the Canadian youth and developmental system did the lion’s share of the work when it came to player development. No doubt Bayern, Gent, Orlando and Wolves have added to the evolution of the player. But all four of these examples, in my opinion, demonstrate the capacity of the Canadian system to develop and nurture talent (through multiple pathways).

Not to come to his defence again but he has only been back in the UK for just over 48 hrs at kick off and was jet lagged. Said to me his legs were dead... Don’t think they needed play him today but I know he hates to miss a game... will watch the game later as I’m filming in Liverpool....

  4. I honestly don’t think that he was a kid that needed a lot of convincing. Unlike some of the other dual nats we are chasing he seemed to want to play for us as first choice. Regardless of team quality. Which is very nice to see.

Everton is the kind of mid table EPL team that I honestly think would be perfect for Larin. He could get real PT and they play a good system he could fit into. I think Everton for Larin is literally THE perfect move for him.

  6. My Top 5 list (ranked on potential as they are prospects after all): 1. Jahkeele Marshall-Rutty (2004) - If the rumoured likes of Man United, Juventus and Bayern are circling, that's good enough for me to rank him #1. 2. Theo Corbeanu (2002) - On the verge of making a Premier League squad and didn't look out of place in WC qualifiers. In fact, I thought he looked better than Hoillet against the same competition. 3. Marcelo Flores (2003) - Never seen him play, other than highlights. Highly regarded in Arsenal's U23s means the potential is there. 4. Lucas Dias (2003) - Plays for Sporting Lisbon's U23s. Looked okay in OQs against players up to 6 years older. Again, lots of potential. 5. Daniel Jebbison (2003) - Haven't seen him play either, but called to England's U18s. Good enough for me. H/M - Jayden Nelson (2002) and Ralph Priso (2002) - Got some minutes as 17/18 year olds for TFC by a coach who shies away from playing young players. I think both showed they can play at this level, particularly Priso. Nelson definitely has the skill but needs to show he can use his teammates on the field rather than trying to do it all alone. Both already seemed to have surpassed other young Canadians (Fraser, Shaffelburg) for now, but hopefully they can play more regularly this year.

Why not stay another year at Besiktas and play some European football next season? He's not likely to get that opportunity at a club in England.

Whether he goes to Everton, West Ham or Leeds, he'll have to take his chances when they come. I don't think there's a single EPL team where he'd be guaranteed to start. That said, he was also not guaranteed to start when he moved to Besiktas. It took him a loan and a coaching change to get his run in the team and take his chance. He earned his spot and will have to it again if he moves, and I am fine with that.

    TFC 2021 Season

As far as I can tell, yes. The chronology appears to be: Onesoccer does a segment about whether Twellman's condemnation of US failure to qualify for Olympics is fair, then tweets a link to the segment quoting Twellman's "pathetic and laughable" description of their campaign. Altidore responds to the Onesoccer tweet by saying that Twellman's national team career was what was pathetic and laughable, implying that he's only got a high profile commentary gig because he is white & has connections and it should be going to DaMarcus Beasly or Mia Hamm, neither of who are white men of course and both of whom had more successful US national team careers Altidore has a 2nd tweet disparaging Twellman for comments he made about Altidore, saying Twellman isn't half the man or player Altidore was and that Altidore is a hero to kids in Haiti & the Carribbean Altidore does a third tweet saying that he (Altidore) is a success because there are systemic racism issues in the US making it more difficult for black players to succeed at soccer [I'm paraphrasing here] Twellman responds by saying he supports Jozy's charitable foundation and encourages other to support Altidore responds that he doesn't want or need Twellman's charity and apparently implies that Twellman is a racist. I didn't appreciate the latter bit until someone else on twitter (when I started to look into this) indicated that Altidore's quote of "big, strong, powerful" is apparently what Twellman often uses to describe black soccer players (at least, so some US fans say). Its been a good week for onesoccer. their youtube highlights packages of the two Canada national team games in the last week have blown away anything else they have got, and now they are sparking accusations of racism between high profile Americans. They must be sitting back now munching on popcorn like the rest of us waiting to see if the saga continues.

  14. Maybe I am not giving him the credit he is due, but I would pump the brakes a bit. This is a guy who just debuted for the Caps last August. The kid has got some game, for sure, but I haven’t seen anything that makes me think he is ready for a major step up to another level at this time. He just had a decent but not spectacular OQ campaign. Much like a lot of our other young guns, I think he needs to light it up in MLS before we start thinking of higher level destinations where he might land. Maybe I am underestimating him but I don’t think he gets near the first team of a Besiktas-level club, or a Championship team. Better IMO to stay in Van and spend the season proving that you are ready to make an immediate impact at that next tier on the footy hierarchy.

  20. For me the real problem for a kid at Besiktas is that the team is looking for results. So you can't give him minutes unless 100% he can help you. So I'd agree a mid table team or Championship is better. As for adapting, Romanian footballers can handle anything!

  22. My opinion: 1:Dias 2:Corbeanu 3:Priso 4:Nelsen 5: Assi based on who I saw the actually is probably 1: Flores 2: Rutty 3: Dias 4: Corbeanu 5: Pellogrino 6: Nelsen 7: Habibullah 8: Priso 9: Pepple 10: Assi HM’s Gazdov, Abaneth, Passaquale, Mbongue, Saliba, Rea, Pecile, Coupland, Colyn, Russell-Rowe, Ferdinand, Kooner. was really hard to make a top 10,I tried to stay under 20, I think I’m u19 with this ? you can easily argue some guys belong here that I haven’t listed. I don’t think we’ve ever been this deep high end prospect wise, it’s conceivable that every player on this list in the 10 plays not only for CanMNT but becomes regular in the top flight in a Euro league, we may end up with multiple low end top flight guys from here as the low low ceiling. Let me be clear, they won’t all be 80+ rated in FIFA, I think a few 70-76’s or even 80’s is possible. The hype and talent is considerable and each could have gone to Europe now or is there and we’d have seen some big academies involved. Flores, Dias and Rutty could be stars, Corbeanu looks to be in that tier same with Habibullah. a few years back a poster claimed that a kid from Ottawa by the name of Jonathan David would give Alphonso Davies a run for his money... no one has claimed that Pellogrino will give Rutty a run but apparently he’s most likely to. Nelsen hasn’t played much but I do know he’s rated, heck Simon Colyn could be in there. I have to be real with 1-4, they’re all so exciting and could be something else, I’m not sure if Theo is a wonder kid but he really has impressed at Wolves this past year and the trajectory he’s on is someting to watch. I think there’s a chance that top 4 takes us somewhere else entirely. I’m also probably doing Habibullah a big disservice here and the Whitecaps apparently have him in the Rutty tier hes just been developing physically at a slower pace. I’m missing guys that’s obvious but shit there was a time where anyone on this list would have been clear cut 1 and tbh I think 1-5 is interchangeable, heck Habbibullah could be ahead of everyone on this list in a few months, Nelsen isn’t a slouch, this was really really hard. You can easily argue Rusell-Rowe is being hard done by me, it’s tough but I’m pumped when writing, this is our best ever prospect group 1-0 hands done in terms of hype and current talent, the potential for multiple world class players exists in this crop.

Not gonna lie, I'm just kind of stoked that we are now in a position where we are arguing whether or not a guy starting for a team in the Israeli Premier League is good enough to play for Canada. I still remember the days of 15-20 years ago when we had a handful of guys playing in decent leagues otherwise our entire team was made up of guys playing at the level of USL Championship or the lowest level of the English/Scottish leagues. We are now in a position where we argue which European league is good enough for us to consider players playing there.

    The Road to Qatar.

Under those circumstances I think they would still play two games at a neutral venue (or venues). They could designate a “home” team for each game or just use aggregated score and PKs or something - but reducing it to a single game would be an unnecessary level of adjustment.

Eh a football career moves fast and he is in that sweet spot regarding his age. If he was 22, sure.. but I don’t think you pass up on an opportunity like this because it may not transpire again. He’s also made it clear his goal is to play at the highest level possible. I’m all for him testing himself and if it goes awry, there’s no reason he can’t move back down a level. Happens all the time.

  26. I included Amanda because he's still playing NCAA. I see the other 9 as better prospects than Flores. He's got a lot of hype but not sure it'll translate. (cut to him winning a starting role with Arsenal before he's 20) Edit: if I'm being honest, I probably have him rated so low as a way to insulate myself when he suits up for Mexico. Less heartbreak.

His point is valid though. CPL was planning on a 28 game season. 4 teams played only 7 games (I forget, was it 10 games for 2 more teams and 11 games for the top 2?). The way Montagliani was talking it sounded like the French schedule was much harder hit than the Canadian schedule. And I will say this too. Montagliani's point was valid too, just his example was bad. The CPL did well to get something out of 2020. The CFL would have been a better example. Or aren't there Caribbean leagues that haven't played since this all began?

Liam succeeds and fails on how he performs and has always felt that way. It’s up to him to earn and keep that spot. He will always play the right ball regardless and he always puts the team first. he’s always been that way even to his detriment ( wish he was a bit more selfish sometimes) Competition is always good and drives players to be better.... and good for the program too!! 41. Amanda is 22 playing against kids that are on average 2 years younger. He's already missed out on training in a professional environment during a critical period in his development. If he goes back to school in the fall and turns pro next year he'll be starting his career 6 months short of his 24th birthday. Most players coming out of college at that age will never cut it at the MLS level which is why they usually get drafted in the lower rounds, no matter how impressive they were in their senior year. I really hope Amanda will be an exception (it sure would be amazing having two players born in refugee camps playing together on the CMNT) but they odds are stacked against him having a pro career at a decent level.
    1 point
  42. Amanda sticks out as being a '98 among all those under 20s. Quick question are you ranking Flores last because it's unlikely he plays for us or do you see the other 9 as better prospects?

  43. We were pretty fortunate to have Corbeanu choose us at such a young age. This last window he could have have been playing Euro U21 with Romania. They also performed exceptionally well tieing both Germany and the Netherlands. They finished tied for 1st in their group with both teams, but didn't move on due to goal differential. A good showing against those teams goes alot further in someone's career than destroying the like of Cayman Islands.

    TFC 2021 Season

I dont get the either or, zero sum perspective. Did we just get rid of Poz, Bradley, Jozy, Oso, mavinga etc to make room for Priso or Nelsen?? TFC didnt go from also ran to contender because they changed any direction on playing kids or CDNs. They stopped bringing in guys like Frings, Mista, Earnshaw, Gilberto etc and getting quality still in their prime stars. What I think most of us object to is seeing Mullins, Endoh or Zaveletta types get trotted out over and over when you could go with a cheap CDN prospect and get arguably the same result but with an upside. They have spent the money bringing these kids along, there are a bunch of them, why not at least see who sinks and who floats eh? Most teams can work in a few young academy players into their roster without going into a tailspin.
