  1. Ladies and gentleman, find someone in your life who loves you as much as Alistair Johnston loves Richie Laryea.

  3. Pump the brakes... let's give this guy a chance. This is the same forum that was begging for us to call a CB who played in the Austrian second division last season and is applauding a CB on a lowly second division Dutch team. My point being: CB is our weakest position and we are in no position to push away players with the pedigree Ferreira has, especially using the "club level" argument. I remember this forum having a similar opinion on Steven Vitoria a few years ago, and look at him now. Ferreira is one of many players who were performing at a high level and had hopes of playing for another country, not so different from Tomori (although Ferreira surely has a tighter connection to Canada)... so be it. Hell, maybe he would've committed earlier if he was ever healthy. Now he's healthy, and we still have a hole in our defence. Worth giving a chance.

Barely tested but loved how comfortable he was on the ball. Nice passing, decent pace and like Corbeanu and Johnston what a rush to score on your debut, especially for a defender. Hopefully gives him a boost to get more minutes at club level.

  5. Before I read the 28 pages of the thread, was there any injury report regarding Gutierrez? Otherwise, we kept him off the Olympic team (and St. Clair) to not play him here?

  8. Some random thoughts: Ricardo Fereirra looks like he just came off the set of the Portuguese re-make of Das Boot. Or the Portuguese re-make of Dune. It's the same actor I am thinking of who was in both. The Cayman Island's Coach looks like a fatter older version of Piette. The 4th Official looked like the sister of American ref Chris Penso. Ted Unkel's pointing to the PK spot looked less emphatic that I was hoping for. If Suriname could only beat this team 3-0, they presumably will need a massive upgrade of their Dutch players to cause us trouble.

And if he ends up in the CPL, and get's called up over the likes of Derek...it sets a bad precedent imo. However with a healthy backline, I don't see him being there. Miller, Corneilius, Kennedy,Vitoria, and Henry is currently our best CB's.

  10. The only thing I'm a little disappointed at last night's lineup is that St. Claire didn't get the start. I mean what better game to cap tie him. Did we really need Crepeau last night? If Borjan was still in camp would he have started? At the very least he should of been subbed in at some point. And I was almost half right with my 6-0 prediction.😀

  11. Our goal: to be the winner of the group. The rule: GD is the first tie breaker if two teams have same points. A professional sport team should do: whatever it's legal to get the job done with sportsmanship/manner. Our team did everything well with respect to our opponents. The sense of emergency, the way of celebration, the attitude to the game, I love them all. We need to build up some gutsy spirit for this June and September. Canada soccer made me cry too many times. I want to be part of a winning team. We gotta be tough this time.

  15. You need to give the Euro players vacation time for their bodies to recover before pre-season training starts. Either their form with the national team and/or their club form is going to tail off. Davies has been playing since last May with only a small break in late August and a holiday break. Almost everyone in Europe is playing a compressed schedule because of covid & Euros. Fans not in the stands isn't helping but you can see there has been lot of inconsistent performances at both the club and the individual player level during this season. MLS/CPL players are good for both June & July since they would be playing anyway and haven't played much in the past year.

Glitches and confusing-lack-of-on-demand-immediately-after-a-match-has-finished, I'm pretty happy with the service. If you had told me two or three years ago that I could sign up for a single streaming service that included the CPL, Can Champ, CMNT, CWNT, CCL and (select) top flight matches from France, Mexico and Brazil, I'd have thought you were mad. If they can slowly expand to include other leagues (MLS, Scottish Premiership, A-League, more Ligue 1), I think this could really take off. Also, for what it's worth: In the absence of official viewership/revenue info from One Soccer, I've been keeping an eye on the numbers from their Youtube Channel. As I write this, they've managed a cumulative total of 2,220,623 views (across all videos) in less than two years, with a big bump (circa 400,000) coming in the last couple of weeks with the Olympic/WC qualifiers. The Canada-Cayman Islands highlights already have 81,630 views - and they were only uploaded 14 hours ago. If they can keep expanding their rights to quality content and bring in more viewers, I think this will start to make a difference not only in paid subscriptions but in people getting more curious about the CPL.

I just wanted to say that I know and understand so many of the complaints, and they're all valid. But, I subscribed for the month to get all the Canada games, and my schedule worked out that I was able to watch them all live on my laptop. I recognize that hit the "perfect scenario" for me, but just wanted to throw some positivity out there for the service.

  22. I’m with @Macksamhere. There is a very good possibility that we will field a better XI than Mexico in the decades to come. What does overtake really mean? Will anyone (Russia, USA, Sweden) ever overtake Canada in hockey? Will anyone overtake the USA in basketball? Does it matter? Croatia will never overtake Argentina or England in footy but that didn’t stop them from beating them in the last World Cup. Belgium is #1 in the world but will never “overtake” Brazil. We are going to be a worry for Mexico and if we are what Sweden/Russia is to Canada in hockey we are right where we need to be. And we will be, if not better.

  23. With our 2 wins this break Canada’s ranking will improve its rating to 1341.0 and +3 to 70th El Salvador with their win and tie will move to 1,341.1 and rise +1 on the rankings to 69th. Long term these rankings actually do matter but I can’t believe we’re going to be 0.1 rating points behind El Salvador lol. Canada has to just keep winning. edits- Honduras is at 1,364.3 and 64th ranked as the 5th place team in CONCACAF in case anyone is interested.

  28. One thing that will be interesting is whether Davies and David can move the needle at all amongst the general Canadian sport fan. I think Mexico's greatest advantage is very similar to Canada's great advantage in hockey: the passion of the fans drives the infrastructure, the player development, the pressure to perform. I can't see us ever coming close to this passion unless something really dramatic changes. Hard to imagine half of Azteca filled with Canada supporters.

  29. Very well said. I think we're all a little tired of being on the outside looking in. Our boys need to do whatever it takes to hold on to first place in our group. Own any tiebreakers, and force Suriname to take the initiative if they want to overtake us. I'm in no mood to trail Suriname on goal differential, and watch as our opponents park the bus in order to win the group.

  33. This is for both of you @El Diego @red card What does "overtake" mean really? Structurally, Belgium will not catch up to France or Germany's infrastructure in our lifetime, but as of right now, they have a better starting eleven than the latter and arguably even the former. Our professional infrastructure is improving every year and could even mimic that small European country's in about ten years time. Will we "overtake" Mexico? I don't really care since it's a loaded question that means nothing to me. In the next 50 years, at any point in that time, will the Men's Canadian National Team have a better starting eleven than Mexico? I wouldn't be surprised if we fielded a stronger line up than them during a significant part of that time frame. I could even see us with a better starting eleven than Mexico in five years time.

  37. I don't hate running up the score since we have little choice to do so with the continually-ridiculous qualifying format for qualifying. I would have hated it if our players had celebrated like the US women's team when they ran up the score against Thailand (I think it was) in the last Women's World Cup, but thankfully our players didn't do that - obviously the players scoring their first goal for their country were excited, which is fine and natural but its not like we celebrated by running like madmen and pulling our jerseys over our heads when we hit double-digits. Gareth Wheeler was talking about how in the past games like this for Canada were not televised, well a large part of that is because games like this never existed, we would come in at a later stage of qualifying rather than this nonsense of playing against the mini-minnows. I know the theory is that this is to help out these tiny nations by letting them play more games but tough to see how a game like this practically helps a country like the Cayman Islands. Let the minnow countries play a shit-ton of games against themselves and let those that prove worthy of moving on to a higher level do so. That said, I am glad that we are having any matches since we haven't played in ages and barely had any friendlies in the past 3-4 years so I'll take it. But in principle WCQ should never have "how much can a team pummel a mini-minnow to death" as a factor at all. The fact that Concacaf's does means we have no choice but to run up the tally as much as possible.

    The Road to Qatar.

So goal differential won’t matter anymore. We’re +15 and Suriname is +9. And we play Aruba next while Suriname plays Bermuda. This also gives us the luxury go into the Suriname match with a rested squad as the Aruba match won’t matter beyond getting the win.

  39. Checking Cayman scores. Lost 3-0 to Suriname. Earlier in Nations League they beat French St. Martin 1-0 and lost to them 3-0, vs US Virgin Islands won 1-0 and then 2-0, beat Barbados 3-2 and lost to them 3-0. Worst loss in recent years was 4-0 vs. Jamaica in 2018. So we did well, and no doubt they did not have their best day.

  42. Ferreira is a wild card. Lots of ifs. ..but if healthy and gets regular club minutes he could be our best CB. He is class on the ball and strong in every aspect except for a lack of speed. You got a glimpse of his passing ability when he spotted Wotherspoon breaking into the box on Larin's goal. If healthy and playing he would be an upgrade on Vitoria.

  45. Cayman won their Nations League group, I believe. This new coach, a young guy from the Ipswich system, has gotten decent results vs similar island nations. So this is what it is all about, including them in a next stage. Which is why I don't agree with you on this G-L. Anywhere where there used to be blowouts they are less and less frequent. In UEFA all nations are included in all qualifiers, and if you look at results, they are getting tighter and tigher. Spain had their famous 12-1 win over Malta in 1983 when they needed goals to qualify for the Euro 84, and back then it was feasible to imagine doing that. Nowadays it would be impossible: Malta is now above minnow status. Amongst the weakest sides, with a few exceptions, they play much closer matches even against the powerhouses: I watched Hargreaves play for England in a qualifier against Andorra played in Barcelona, and it was scoreless at the half; recently the Andorra u-21 drew England 3-3 in a qualifier, England with U-17 WC winners playing for them. Gibraltar, Faroe Islands, they also come up with surprises. Then, if Cayman gets a result, anyone talented living abroad with that nation's heritage might actually consider putting their shirt on. Why can't the logic workin for us work for them? We are more legit, and we can therefore draw better players into the mix. Suriname is a team waiting to happen, I think Domincan Republic will end up being tough (with so many around the world, I have coached kids from Domincan families here in BCN), all these Caribbean nations are going to get better.
