Totally need to respect all our opponents and would take 4 1-0s cause that would get us through. But if we are afraid of Suriname, then we might as well not even bother with playing Mexico.15 points

Opponent watch: Suriname (why they have the potential to be a tough team)
johnyb and 8 others reacted to Club Linesman for a topic
We need to take every opposition seriously when qualifying for the World Cup. We haven’t done shit yet. Having said that, if we can’t beat Bermuda and even an improved Suriname, (and Haiti...) we have no right being in the Ocho, never mind playing in the World Cup. We have a worlds best 11 in our lineup, top players in Ligue 1 and Portugal, and guys who aren’t just marginal MLS players but guys who are integral to their teams. Treat our opponents with respect but they should be the ones shitting their pants about our team and our players.9 points -
Phonzie playing his best ball in a while...wonder if it's a formation thing or just Flick telling him to play more offensive. Haven't seen him this far forward so often since last season.6 points

He just hasn’t made a decision yet. IMO, we are no better or worse off than we have been for a while. Would have been good to get him to the January camp, but the incentive for playing with a young dynamic Canadian team is exactly the same as it was.3 points -

I'm not worried about this team, nor any team other than USA, and Mexico. While the gap may still be massive between those nations, I'm actually excited that the entire Concacaf gap is getting better, regardless of where these guys coming from their diaspora. This is a good thing for our region.3 points

Kent and 2 others reacted to An Observer for a topic
We should win I don’t think it’s so simple. Of course, we should win but this group will likely come down to one match at the end with Suriname and anything can happen in one match. All it takes is a bad 15 minutes, a mistake or two at the back, and being unlucky at the other end and we are out. This is even heightened as we haven’t played for well over a year. Frankly, the group stage worries me much more than a two leg playoff against a Haiti as while I think they could beat us in one match as happened in the Gold Cup, I think the odds of that happening over two legs is very low in3 points -

The same reason why Australia now competes in the AFC (Asia) instead of Oceania. For competitive reasons. They can compete in CONCACAF and more so in the Caribbean Cups. The same goes for Guyana & French Guiana. These 3 teams would be absolutely demolished regularly in CONMEBOL. Many of these nations also associate themselves more in Caribbean culture than South American as well. Guyana very similar to islands such as Trinidad & Jamaica. If you live in the GTA, you would understand the cultures are quite similar, particularly Trinidad & Guyana. Suriname is very much cul3 points -
There is no "main" TSN network any more. It was on 4 and 5, which are the default TSN channels for everyone in Ontario and eastward. I suspect most people get TSN 1,3,4 & 5 these days, with TSN 2 the only true national channel. A "full" network broadcast nowadays is when the same thing is being shown on 1,3,4 & 5. Anything else is a regional broadcast.2 points

Would Indy be looking at a Usports guy without his positive showing with Halifax last summer?? Whats the news here?? Guys that are good quality can find teams in different leagues that will pay more?? Someone should inform MLS of this as I see young players leaving it for more money in europe. Is the story that the CPL in year 2 cant compete with wages paid by one of the top USL teams with MLS aspirations??2 points -
Definitely not. I'll assume that they play with Gnarby, Sane, Coman, Lewandowski as the front four. Kimmich and Alaba "the utilitiy man" will play the holding mids. The back four will consist of Pavard and Davies as the fullbacks, and Sule and Hernandez as the CBs. I've seen Hernandez deployed as the LCB several times. Although Alaba has played there, he's played everywhere and Im sure he'll play in the midfield.2 points

Good pick ups for Suriname. But we must use the same logic we use with our own group of guys; they will have never played together. If we’re saying that we could get a disappointing result or 2 based off the fact that our top guys haven’t been together for over a year, that definitely puts them in the same boat. Some of these guys could very well be meeting eachother for the first time at their camp.2 points -

Yeah I think this is basically the thing that everyone finds scary. Anybody can beat anybody in a single match. Suriname can just bunker and then catch us on a counter attack, and it’s not like our back line/keeper aren’t prone to the odd mistake. Hopefully we can build a goal difference advantage over the other matches so that all we need is a draw. That would take some of the pressure off at least.2 points -
2020 Voyageurs Cup Format
yellowsweatygorilla and one other reacted to Watchmen for a topic
I'm not opposed to it, but that would probably depend more on when CPL owners wanted to bring players in. The CPL season isn't until late May, so this seems early for that. Otherwise, I'd think you'd just start the CPL season earlier. Including Forge makes sense though, if you want to get the Voyagers Cup/Champions League spot decided.2 points -

Well everyone already knows! I know very little but it just seems like its the jilted ex/spurned cpl lover with an agenda try to push journalistic comments and statements disguised as "news the public deserves to hear" with "my duty platitudes". In this case is he passing information from players that desperately felt this needed uncovering or he has directly asked players to dig for this type of story and reaction. While the media should be there to ask questions and push for positive change in society, for a league not just in its infancy but the pandemic thrown at them in year two2 points -

Its time for us to deliver on the field and get results..thats all. We have the players and have gone through the GC plus Nations league. Hopefully John & the players have learnt from Haiti and the away game to the USA. We have also added an assistant coach with Concacaf experience. Yes, anything can happen in a one off game but really there are no more excuses for us not to progress to the Ocho.2 points

You have to be nuts to be so focused on the quality of the cpl The league is what it is, I think most people here appreciate that and hope for it to improve with every year. It's probably on par with the League of Ireland Premier division or something, but hey, even Shamrock Rovers gets a guy into the Republic of Ireland national team now and again. Don't worry about it.2 points -

Grrr, Mr rollins whats wrong with that?? If a CDN guy comes from basically nowhere, shines in CPL and gets a payday somewhere else...thats great. It would be even better if CPL got a transfer fee. I dont get this, are we having problems fielding enough quality CDN?? Are we finding guys who werent getting a sniff with USL/MLS before CPL came along? Is the CPL level of play on par with most USL? Damn right on all accounts! And of course we are always going to loose the best guys to teams with deep pockets..but isnt that a good thing??2 points -

These 3 players would for sure be in the conversation for Canada. This is Canada we are talking about here; haven't qualified for a World Cup in 35 years and lost to Haiti in their last competitive match. Whenever I get the sense Canadian fans are getting cocky because "on paper" Canada should be good I always cringe.1 point -
Donk is a CB. That's where he's been playing for Galatasaray. Any regularly starting CB on Galatasaray would start for us. Less sure about Bisewar, but he's listed as a CAM or winger. I don't check the line ups in Cyprus like I do in Turkey, since we have no players there right now, so I can't say if those positions are accurate. I have never seen him play either. I am just looking at his wiki page and it seems like he was regularly contributing for PAOK every season until this one, which is probably why he is away on loan right now. PAOK finished 2nd last season and last won Greece1 point

They all improve Suriname, but the Bisewar signing is meh. They’re all going to start on the back line, so it will make them harder to break down, but none of these guys are midfielders, or strikers. We should still be able to take the game to them, and overwhelm them.1 point -
Ryan Donk is a huge pick up. He's vice captain at Galatasaray, according to wiki https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galatasaray_S.K._(football) Diego Bisewar has a pretty solid resume as well https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diego_Biseswar And we all know about Kevin Leerdam All 3 of those players would arguably start for us, so big pick ups for Suriname. The silver lining is that if Bermuda and Suriname may help us out by taking points off each other.1 point
