  2. There has to be a purpose to playing friendlies. One purpose that i see is that such matches would build famiarity and on-field chemistry amongst the players who will be involved in WCQ. But there is no point in playing a freindly just to trot out a bunch of guys who wont be involved in world cup qualifying. Herdman, by now, should already know 75%-80% of the players who will make up the WCQ squad. Including the most of the starters. Therefore, i had to roll my eyes at a list posted above of players who (except for maybe a handfull) have no chance what so ever of being on the WCQ squa

There is no doubt that the defending in Ligue 1 is way better than in Belgium, but David has had more chances in the last few games than he had previously. He should have at least 3 goals...including the missed penalty. He is playing well now.. it's just a matter of finishing off his chances...I dont think the league is too high for him.

  9. I said it was ridiculous not to play. But only 7 CONCACAF teams have played. OTOH, it was most of the top teams. So it's probably more accurate to say: It was unserious. Because the teams serious about winning and getting to the World Cup mostly played.

Yes. We should always prefer the ones who play for Canada because they want to play for Canada and not because its easier to choose canada or improves their chances of playing internationally.

US 6-2 over Panama. I watched a bit of it. Not at all intense as past US/Panama Gold Cup matches I have seen but this was expected. Fairly wide open with only getting chippy late in the second. With 3 passes, Panama scored early on a free header allowed by Ream and Miazga. Then US dominated rest of the half with 3 goals. Reyna got his first US goal on a free kick near the box. Panama keeper made a bit of an error along with probably another in the second half but this was his first cap. US played with a striker this time as Gioacchini scored his first two US goals. But he missed a hat tri

Wow. So USA crushes Panama 6-2 to close out their November window. They'll be feeling good about that. Reyna opens his national team account. Soto scores a brace off the bench. Even Sebastian Lleget, who wasn't even suppose to be there, got a goal to his name in this one. So positive all around for our friends down south. The only negative would be conceding two goals to a Panama striker who plays in the Prince Mohammad bin Salman League. That'll be disappointing for them. If the rumors about Canada playing Panama are true, this kind of result raises the expectations for us, wouldn'

Yeah that is one purpose. Another purpose is to grow the player pool. Whether it was worth it or not this time around is debatable, but we cannot say there is no point just because most of the players won't be involved in wcq. If that's the case we may as well not have a camp poutine in Panama. As for the Americans, I think their friendly was a "nice to have", with many up-and-comers able to win caps. Mission accomplished on their end I would say. As for us, not playing is not the end of the world. It would have been nice, like you said. Coulda played, shoulda played, but

  20. Yes, we could have played. And the CSA was clearly thinking about it. What percentage of those guys will be in our ideal 23 man squad? What percentage of those guys will be in the next 11 + 3 that will see playing time on our next competitive match day? What percentage of those guys wanted to travel for a friendly given the increased difficulties and risks and the condensed calendar for the 2nd half of 2020? It may not have been worth the time and effort given the opponents and hosting venues we could find.

There's a deep dive in the Financial Times on Mediapro's rather aggressive tactics in France. Turns out they're owned by a Private Equity group from China. They're using dubious covid legal protections to prevent Ligue 1 from being able to hold them to the terms of the contract. This has forced Ligue 1 to go through mediation where Mediapro is making the case that the value of the rights are impaired regardless of whether the games have returned because the lack of fans hurts the product. Sounds more like buyer's remorse after overpaying. Ligue 1 describes Mediapro as "Pirates" Also

As you know, this is just a soccer supporters forum on the internet. It is fun to discuss all things about Canadian soccer, even potential players. I am not sure why you are so annoyed about this particular thread. If players from the CPL are being called up to the national team (which is great), there was no harm talking about a Canadian born player playing in Bulgaria. Again, it should be fun to talk about all things related to Canadian soccer. Isn't that the point?

    Jonathan David

Putting aside the fact that Jonathan David's current scoring drought is temporary, it's quite clear that Lille have generally looked better with David on the pitch, even when he doesn't score. In their best performance of the season, when they decisively beat a decent Milan side, he was one of the best players throughout. He makes the players around him play better, both through the things that he does and the space he creates. I was very pessimistic going into that match, more due to the way the team was set up to play than David's admittedly under par performances up to that point. However,

Someone wake me up when somebody has something new, fresh, and insightful to add to this conversation. Nearly 20 pages in, and this thread has 5-6 guys repeatedly saying the same unoriginal take over and over again. At least one guy tried to start a new thread with some actual constructive opinions, but it seems that we collectively prefer the repetitive dickhead approach.

  33. Excellent! Those are all key players, and I'm thrilled to have them all back. I hate this narrative that re-signing core players is "bolstering" the roster though. Every announcement in CPL seems to be like this. These are all players that should have been locked up on multi-year deals, yet because of the contract structures they could have easily left so we announce them as if they were new signings.

Blah blah blah.. here it is. They signed with an agency and part of the deal is when you sign international players we want in on the action and we expect a certain amount of players. Its a business. I dont like it but whatever. Its more about Canadian players for me anyways and 4 int players a team is no big deal. Just tell this agency to step their game up. The William Wallace signing seems like a good start
