One thing I've seen from the lad is he always puts his head down and works hard, I'm confident he will keep doing the same. If anything, I'm sure he will use this as more motivation to just keeping crushing it like he has been and get in even better form. That's all he can do for now. Although not ideal, a few positives is that he will still get great coaching and training within Liverpool and he will be getting tons of game minutes, even if it is at a level he is clearly above. All the best to him the next 11 weeks. Tell him all of us back in Canada are supporting him .

  4. This thread deserves a serious bump. I always support all CMNT players, but I was on him way back in 2015 when he would sometimes be played out wide and look awful. He has turned into quite the exceptional talent and I don't think it is being appreciated enough on here. Two recent things for the recognition bump: 1) rocking the captain armband for TFC who currently sit top of the table in MLS. 2) How much his defensive ability has improved and how he has looked quite capable in his hybrid Defensive Midfield role. The reality is if Canada is going to make a deep WC

Could the argument be made that Vanney has had the least amount of input with regards to who the money is spent on compared to the other coaches? Genuine question. Things really seemed to change when Bezbatchenko came on board. Before that, the culture of the team would change with every coach: Preki would bring in European wanderers from Latvia/Russia, Winter had a distinct Dutch flavour in the players brought in during his tenure, Nelsen opted more for the English types with his players. Once Bezbatchenko joined, that's when things seemed to stabilize with bringing in high-priced tal

What a strange string of sentences to put together. Akinola is literally the team's joint-leading goal scorer right now. So yes, Akinola. Maybe. TFC absolutely should be criticized for not doing a better job transitioning more players to the first team, but your example has the exact opposite effect. It's like saying "when's the last time TFC took a chance on a Canadian from outside the club? Laryea, maybe?" To go one step further, the RB in question only became a right back under Vanney. Laryea was taken off the scrap heap from Orlando as a central midfielder who had n

There are a few posters on here who really seem to think Fraser is a bad footballer and not deserving of a chance to play for the mighty TFC, everyone is entitled to their opinion but I don't see where it is coming from, he has looked quite good in his limited playing time IMHO! This is a Canadian Soccer forum and I would think most people would want him to get more of a chance and succeed, why would anyone not want that?

I don't think judging a player by national appearances is very helpful. In Larin's case, it spans to the dark ages and he hasn't had a real chance with this group. I don't care how bad he was in a few appearances with teammates who just happen to wear the same kit as this much improved team does now. I still like Cavallini starting, but it's close. Good arguments for both.

This mindset I wholeheartedly disagree with. And this is mostly why I'm not a big fan of Vanney. This idea that kids must "earn" playing time does such a disservice to those young players because they aren't established enough to "earn" a place in the garbage minutes they get. And you either get into an endless cycle of bringing in high-priced talent or the team crashes and burns. So far, TFC has been the former. Hopefully they don't become the latter. The way to do that is to blood some of the younger players properly. Young players need to be in an environment that gives them

Yeah, he deserves some credit. Vanney is a good coach. IMO he's not a great coach and definitely isn't coach of the year candidate, regardless of the team's performance. But he isn't a bad coach. My point is that he has it "easier" than other TFC coaches.

No, that's not it. It's precisely the coach's responsibility to do exactly that in TFC's case. Or at least have a plan for that. If you are coaching TFC and you have Fraser/Shaffelburg/Nelson/Okello/Marshall-Rutty/Priso/Perruzza, you need to identify which one of those seven are true gamers and make an effort to involve them. Having them sit on the bench game after game does nothing for their development. Once you've identified which ones are going to be your horses, you need to give them 20 minutes one game, 15 the next. If Nelson had received consistent minutes leading up to his start,

If you want to discuss whether TFC is the right environment for a certain player to develop, that's fine. One can do that in a vacuum. What is odd to me is that many non-TFC fans have strong opinions about Vanney as a coach and it is hard not to think that these opinions are partially (or wholly) because of their belief that he doesn't play young Canadians enough. (full disclosure: I am a TFC fan and I think Vanney is a good coach, though certainly not perfect) If you really want to take this exercise of is TFC developing Canadian talent well, why not literally do a case by case basis? I get it. I want to see tons of Canadians in the lineup, too (that goes for all three MLS clubs). I think Fraser probably should have seen time in the last half hour of TFC's last game given how clearly exhausted both Osorio and Delgado looked, but Vanney tends to be too conservative at times as I said. But yeah, I honestly don't care if people here like him or not. I'm not his nephew. I just find a lot of the criticism strange and, frankly, quite petty.

I don’t think Borges has the same impact playing in the cpl during the island games as he did the first season. Saw him live at a Cavalry game last year. He came off the bench in the second half. Good player. What struck me was his physicality, considering his age. And I am not sure what you mean by the Elva stuff. Seems to be doing well for himself. Last year, at the age of 24, he was a regular for a team pushing for promotion to the 2.Bundesliga. Perhaps a little behind for a player who once upon a time caught the eye of Arsenal, Benfica and others, but not everyone being scouted by such clubs are going to sign at those clubs and go on to become stars. What if I told you that we could play and develop our youth and win trophies at the same time. If Bayern can do it we can too. Looking at their 2013 treble winning season they played tons of homegrown and youth players like Bastian Schweinstieger, Thomas Müller, Toni Kroos, Philipp Lahm, David Alaba all of whom were young players that came from the Bayern academy and were given a chance and they became superstars. If we actually made the effort to play our young players consistently even if it's 10-20 minutes at the end of game we could develop lots of young players to sell abroad or to have t

El Hombre, I think the best we can hope for is that TFC continue to loan their young players out like they have done recently with Okello to Koge, and Dunn to CPL. That may be a positive change with Curtis. These kids have to play a lot to develop and it's not going to happen with TFC. We all want Liam to get a loan and Liverpool know that's what he needs as well.

And further to my point above, when this is pointed out we tend to focus on where Fraser IS better than Delgado, without considering the totality of where both of them are at. Delgado is the better player on the whole (I think Fraser has a higher ceiling fwiw). So another good example of selective judgement. Again, not surprising. We are Canadian supporters.

I have mixed views on this. Yes, we want to as many canadians developed as possible. But the way the process works is that there will be many more who dont develop into the kind of player that we want them to be than those that will be in Herdman’s lineup one day. Thats just the way it is. Part of it is the system but most of it is up to the player himself. What if the player doesnt have what it takes to play regularly at this level. Why is that hard for some to understand. i am happy as long as the developing canadians are getting a fair chance. And in my view, from what i can tell

Like I said, I'm not a Vanney fan but I don't understand how there is so much hate towards a coach that's been successful like him. 3 MLS cup finals in 4 years. 1 CCL final. Currently sitting 1st place in all of MLS. Akinola who came up through TFC is leading all Canadians in scoring by a long shot. Osorio (who also came up through the youth system) is playing every minute of every game. He is the current captain of the league leading best team in MLS. Laryea has been a revelation in 12 months and become one of the best outside backs in the MLS.

I am not a Vanney fan at all. I think he is an average coach at best but TFC play a good brand of football. To me Vanney struggles most with his substitutions and player rotation the most. However, TFC is playing some of its best football ever at the moment and they're doing it without Bradley at defensive midfield. But they are also doing it without Fraser in defensive midfield as well. Everyone on here can talk about Toronto's big budget being a factor but the truth is that TFC is playing its best footy currently and its doing it with two homegrown players in defensive mid with Delg

You are complaining about Red going to bat for Fraser, like he is related, yet you jumped into a thread just to defend Vanney when you inferred/deduced/read between the lines he was not geting his due. I know that there is nothing that can compare to playing or even being around a club like Liverpool. Or even playing in the Championship or even another European league like say a Belgium, Portugal or even a Switzerland. Developing in an environment where soccer is everything. However, was just wondering if TFC had enquired about taking him on on a loan. I’m just curious because of the fact that they got another young Liverpool player from the Liverpool U23 with bringing on Gallacher on a loan deal a few weeks back.

A lot of this has to do with the market TFC plays in. If they want to be at the very least relevant they need to be a top team in the league on an almost consistent basis. There are sports fans I work with , big Raptors , Leafs and Jays fans who would be hard pressed to name you even one player on TFC’s roster and they all live in the Toronto area. Therefore, keep having losing seasons and you even lose the casual fan from caring. First of all it’s the North American mentality of only really caring if the league your city plays in is the best league in the world . If it’s not then good luck ge

Yes, he was the best of "year 1 CPL" and was brought in to play in D2 - no D1 teams took him. From the analysis I posted earlier, D2 looks like the level where he belongs and was brought to play there - not D1. Can he potentially improve enough to get 1st club minutes in D1? Maybe, but that's up to him to impress his coach and prove that he can. I don't see it as a failure just yet. Had the club remained in D2 and he still could not crack the 1st team than yes, that would have been a fail in my book

They have certainly shipped out a few players in front of him which might help him. Being in close quarters if he can keep impressing with the U23 would help maybe get some first team training at least. Not ideal but hopefully he can keep his chin up and find some positives and maybe make chicken salad out of chicken crap.

Also to add to that. One player isn’t going to scare off clubs from taking interest in cpl players. Pepple is getting calls from all over Europe. Farsi apparently has a ton of interest. Zator was almost in the championship. That’s just the Cavs alone. So even if Borges does nothing in Europe it’s not going to impact the league by the looks of it.

He parents are both doctors, so he has intelligence and hard work built into him. Couple that with his insane physical ability and the kid could do things. At 17 he has a 4% body fat. I meant as compared to previous TFC coaches: Nelsen, Winter, Preki etc. This would be in response to the idea that TFC has always been a big spender but has had the most success under Vanney. My thought is that the only difference isn't just Vanney but also the way they approached recruitment which previous TFC coaches prior to Vanney had more input on (and may have made some bad choices).

This is a consequence of people wanting as many Canadians to be developed as possible. This is a Canadian soccer supporters website, not a Toronto FC one. Rightly or wrongly, Vanney is blamed for not developing enough Canadians. You are understandably going to find some less-than-accurate views around here when it comes to his coaching ability. My suggestion is to just filter them out. I very much doubt you are going to get anywhere with the hardened critics. My two cents: His record speaks for itself. Except it's not just "one player". It was the player the league deemed to be the best last year. So, I think it's fair to say that if the best player is struggling for a lower tier Belgian side, other leagues might pause on the amount they want to spend on a CPL player. Which isn't to say that more players won't be sold or that the CPL is a failure, because neither of those are true either. I think this relates more to still figuring out what level the CPL is currently at globally, and trying to improve upon that.

  41. FWIW, I took the top 4 teams and looked them up on transfermarket. CS Cartagines - $4.5M Limon FC - $3.24M LD Alajuelense - $4.5M Saprissa - $4.3M So Saprissa isn’t a unique outlier. They are definitely one of the elite, but that is a pretty rich top 4 by CONCACAF standards. Barring the MLS teams moving to CPL in the short term, it will be a while before the league has that sort of financial clout.

I see what you mean. I think we should temper our expectations in general, because we just do not know. Case in point: Davies, Tabla and Elva were all linked with mega clubs. Davies was the real deal. Tabla seemed to be the real deal, and even got a chance, but did not take it. Elva never got a chance despite the links. These guys can fall anywhere on the spectrum. Not even the clubs themselves know whether they will strike gold. That is why they cast a wide net. I'll throw Roen Fordyce Hylwka (RW/CAM) into the mix. Top scorer in the u19 oberliga last year, this year he's been quite good in a pretty horrible Sandhausen II side having scored 5 out of the 11 goals Sandhausen II scored (he also probably has a few assists but Sandhausen II assists aren't recorded on transfermarkt). I suspect he'll be promoted to the full Sandhausen squad soon if keeps playing like he is now.

Just like it would be an accomplishment for the league if he was a starter at his new club. Just because the league has a disappointment doesn’t mean the league sucks or is doomed to fail.
