    Axel Desjardins

Hey guys, Axel's brother here. I thought I would update his situation. First of all, the promotion was something else. He said the night of the game til the next morning was the best time of his life. He said it gave him a taste of what it's like to win something for a team, for the fans, and for a city. Especially in Spezia, where the fans are fanatics. Secondly, with a promotion in a first division, there comes a lot of changes. They have a new director, and everyone at the club is getting re-evaluated this week, including Axel. Spezia will decide if they want to keep Axel, send him on loan or transfer him in the next days. He is doing the best he can and still working very hard. They had physical tests a few days ago and he absolutely annihilated his teammates in the strength department scoring the highest by far. Axel and his agent are doing the best they can to get some minutes next season. I'll try to keep you guys updated, but we'll get some more official news soon.

    Cyle Larin

It seems that Larin started his career as a pure goal scorer. A true natural finisher who couldn't miss, albeit at the MLS level. He won rookie of the year, was picked for the MLS allstar team the following year, and dealt with off the field issues in his final year, but still scored 12 goals. Working hard for the team was not his strength, neither was his hold up play, but his god-like ability to finish every chance in his path was. That led to a move to Besiktas, where he started hot, but eventually lost his spot and seemingly his confidence. What followed was a loan where Larin seemed to reinvent himself. His identity shifted from goal scorer to hard working forward and with that came the improvement in hold up play. It is still not perfect, but much improved. It was a part of his game he needed to improve and he has done that. Now he is a more well rounded player, and the stats point to that, as he scored 9 and assisting 10 on loan in Belgium. I don't think he ever had more than 5 assists in an MLS season. Larin is now back at Besiktas, and the hard work for the team (and all that comes with it) seems to be part of him. It is very nice to see. It is what needed to happen for him to see the field regularly for a bigger club. A re-discovery of that Orlando goal scoring confidence would turn him into a monster. He is scoring again, but he is not quite there yet.

  6. As crazy as a 5 way tie sounds it isn't as far fetched as some may think, Valour beats Forge, York9 and Cavalry draw, Atletico beats Halifax and Pacific beat the Eddies! I wonder what that would pay out on a betting voucher?

His hold up play used to be so terrible. Nice to see he has improved a bit there! If he can hang around and do well at a club like Besiktas that says a lot about his improvement in the past two years.

His hold up play is definitely better and he moves better but I thought he lost the ball too much and mislayed it a few times too many. But definitely think he is a head of cavalini at the moment.

  10. I feel that if they want to have guest teams they should make it a different tournament and call it something else. Have the normal Gold Cup (CONCACAF only) the year after the World Cup and then hold a different tournament with guest teams. If they have this "partnership" with the Asian Confederation then just create a Pacific Cup with an Asia vs CONCACAF theme.

His hold up play has improved massively. Given Cavallini's current form and considering the level Larin is currently consistently getting playing time at, I'd argue it's a no brainer who deserves to start for Canada right now.

Different type of player. He's very much a RB in the mold of Kimmich. Both seem to be comfortable in midfield ,either centrally or out wide. Not as athletic, but has an above average football IQ, relies on good positioning. He can also be physical and strong in the tackle. He's 5'11 and built well.

The thing about Fraser is that he is up against Bradley, Osorio and Delgado. How long have these players been together? 5-6 years? It is annoying for us, because we see a clearly talented Fraser on the bench. I don't think Vanney "not rating" Fraser explains it. Look at it this way: Rightly or wrongly, Bradley is untouchable. Osorio offers something different. Everyone understands this, which is why everyone looks to Delgado as the one Fraser should replace. Fraser is arguably more talented than Delgado, so why does he not get more chances? I think it comes down to Delgado's function in the team. He gives the team something Vanney likes. He obviously has chemistry with Osorio and Bradley. They have played together forever. They have won many things playing alongside each other. I think looking at it this way is more logical than "Vanney doesn't rate Fraser". If Vanney didn't rate Fraser, we would not even be having this discussion, because Fraser would be off playing soccer somewhere else. Vanney is not going to have players in his team who he doesn't rate.

Their club name always sounds like it should be someone's long lost ancestor. Like he was the one who passed down the castle that your great grandmother was born on or something.

  17. My only hope for a Valour win is if in fact Forge have clinched a spot in the next round, they send out an A minus lineup, including the required Canadian content. I don't see how Valour scores a goal against a full strength Forge side if they couldn't against the likes of HFX or York.

The major thing blocking Fraser from minutes is Vanney, not Bradley.

There's room for improvement sure, and his first touch could use some work, but he just appears to be in overall better shape now, moves better, more agile, and finally appears to be using his big frame to his advantage. The truth is that Larin will have to keep competing and proving himself to get playing time... Cavallini with the Whitecaps won't

  22. I've been pondering this for a while, and I'd love to see the CPL and the A-League establish some sort of professional relationship. Having the champion of each league fly to the other country (alternating years) for a friendly would be spectacular, and hopefully something that could be done for a reasonable price via their airline partners. More than that though, I'd love to see One Soccer and MyFootball (their One Soccer equivalent, so near as I can tell) enter into some kind of reciprocity agreement whereby they show each other's league matches. It seems like it would be an easy way for each to build their content base and international exposure. Being able to watch live matches for Sydney FC, Wellington Phoenix or Brisbane Roar would make my day! (Of course, having One Soccer add other leagues like the Scottish Premiership, Ligue 1 and the Argentine Primera División wouldn't be so bad either )

  23. I had not watched him much before last year but for whatever reason I was able to catch quite a few of his games last season (Belgian league's times tended to be different than the English leagues). He is not perfect but worked hard for the team generally and was picking up a fair number of assists because of it. When there was talk of him being available for 2/3 million Euro, I would certainly have had him as a backup striker for my club side. Works a lot harder than our £40 mill one. I think he could be real good foil for the other attacking talent we have in the national team at this point.

Or slip Deleon in there and shift others around, plenty of ways he can keep Okello, Nelsen and Fraser on the bench. He can be quite creative when he wants to be.

Larin looked good in those clips! Was making nice runs, and even tracked back with some nice tackles defensively. Would love to see that hustle in a Canada jersey! Looks like he has matured and developed other parts of his game. Awesome!

    The Road to Qatar.

A lot of money has been sunk in to this. If we don't play this out now people are gonna ask some big questions. Like why did we do what we did and why did we spend like we spent. So we're all along for the big ride now until the money's gone and then people can pat each other on the back and say we did it. I guess until next year. I know the tv tells us everday Americans are evil and dirty but I'm not sure why they're any different than anyone else. I think thats called bigotry

I just think CPL would only stand to lose. We saw it with MLS friendlies against European teams. If CPL wins people will say “lol, it’s a friendly against a div 2 team” and if CPL loses people will say “lol, can’t even beat a div 2 team”.

I'd compare him to Chung and N'Sa at the moment. He shouldn't be at the senior team level just yet. I'd rather see him with the U23s.

  34. Interesting scenarios but there's enough clues pointing out to this being where CSB wants to go mid to long term 1-Premier League / ~ 16 clubs / National / Post 2026 --> I predict "2.0" where salaries and quality gets pushed up leading to the 2029 TV rights renewal. Going "2.0" right after the World Cup and before the new contract makes sense as aiming to become a CONCACAF top 3 or 4 league raise the value of the product, attract more talents and fans while potentially landing them a better TV deal. By "2.0" I'm also taking into account that MediaPro might land the Canadian rights for MLS which would bring LOTS of new viewers to Onesoccer and the channel they planned to launch. More eyes on CPL leads to more sponsors and revenues for the league and clubs while making it more attractive to investors to get into the league. By "2.0" - I mean that the league riding the "World Cup high", might try to push the leagues budget closer to what CFL is currently doing - CPL will most likely being unionized by then anyways which will push salaries up regardless. Lastly, this is where CPL enters the 3 main cities - MLS ownership/CONCACAF forcing it or not. The league will never reach it's full potential without those 3 and right after 2026 is THE perfect time to pull the trigger on these 3. Another reason is that having clubs within those cities is another great way to drive the media rights up in time for the new contract in 2029. This is also where I could see the league relaxing the Canadian quotas and U21 minutes to position itself as a top CONCACAF league because let's be honest, they are aiming for #3 2-Championship / ~16 clubs / National Post 2026 --> I predict that CPL operating in it's "current 1.0" level & budget also serves as a way to demonstrate that a national league at this level can work under the CSB model. Where CPL will go "2.0" and pay true pro salaries and more for internationals, Championship can operate under CPL "1.0" current level - under a million with more modest infrastructure for medium size markets (Canadian perspective of course) I think the 2026 World Cup will create unprecedented "demand" for soccer. Where the world cup was a catalyst in launching MLS and will most likely attract more investors willing to pay a billion (fee + stadium) to get in MLS, CSB will close the Premier League after the inclusion of the 3 main cities and leverage that demands to fills a Division II instead of bloating D1. This would still represent an intriguing opportunity for investors wanting to get into soccer in one of the last untapped market (10th economy) in the world - right after a world cup I think that a functioning D2 with 2 seasons under it's belt is perfect to include them in the media package for 2029. Then you introduce pro/rel. Lastly, I think that the Premier League relaxing it's Canadian quotas and U21 minutes goes to Championship so only the best Canadians are ready to go up with the better talents in the top tier. 3-Regional Leagues --> CSB version of the Memorial Cup As the article from Quebec was saying, you're looking at regional leagues (Ontario & Quebec merger - eventually including Atlantic), a BC league and most likely a Prairies league with the aim of making it pro but at low budgets. If they are serious in transitioning from semi-pro to "pro" you might see more of the following happening to clubs to join that structure ex: Merger of 3 Laval clubs into one Western Laval club - I could see a bunch of clubs in the GTA doing the same This would fulfill the CSA plan they had for D3 Champions would play in a Memorial Cup that could win the team promotion L10 is already included in this round of Media deal, the next one would include the regional league in the bundle

  35. Good point. Atiba's longtime teammate at Besiktas, Ricardo Quaresma, was infamous for the teardrop tattoo under his eye. Typically, the teardrop tattoo indicates you have successfully killed another person. Most logical explanation is that he's just a total dumb@ss and didn't know what he was getting.

    TFC 2020 Season

Sorry but I just need to rant. Could post this on the David topic, since I didn't know he was looked at by TFC, but the reason I posted this year is because David's story and the rest of this guys tweets took the words out of my mouth on tfc's handling on transitioning their academy players to their first team. During their time in Orlando, Vanney was interviewed about Okello and Nelson. Saying they earned it and the team doesn't do "handouts". It was short lived. Players haven't been called up in last 2 matches against fairly weak oppositions. This mentality has bothered me. I can see that argument being made for developed players, but the kids? They do need handouts imo. Train as much as they like, they need real game experience to learn. Just like everything else in the the real world. LAFC, one of the top teams in the league have been using 16 year olds in must win games. They were losing last night and opted to use the kids. Why is a team with similar expectations to tfc, okay using their kids while tfc isn't? And not just LAFC, the league in general have been using teenagers on a much more regular basis. Okello signed for TFC when he was 18 years old. He's 20 now. In 2 years, he has manged a grand total of 66 minutes of playing time. Not even enough for a full match. Does that sound like progress? Is this how one of your top prospects supposed to grow? Isn't this enough proof that the "they need to earn it in training" approach isn't working? Your top prospect can't even get a full 90 in 2 years, the method isn't working! Not even going to mention Fraser situation. Reason I'm saying all this is that, I think young TFC players will start to catch on to this. I have already see several current and former HGP's liking tweets criticizing Vanney's handling of youth players. That's a worrying sign. The appeal of playing for a professional team's academy in your own neighborhood is soon going to lose it's appeal, and it's honestly quite pathetic. Striker's shouldn't even bother attempting to stay here since they'll be replaced by DP's. Really bothered me when they had a gathering last year with Manning at tfc's final home match. Multiple people asking them questions about the academy with the same bullshit answers of how "we have a great academy and we're dedicated to using them bla bla bla". They've said this for years now. Still no change. We have a good thing here. Finally an academy with a professional team who have been putting some money into it. It's just sad how the management can't seem to figure out how to get these kids to play with the first team. Side note, Wheeler was such a jack ass at that gathering, he even intervened in one of the questions and his response was "do you want to play your kids or win titles?" this guy is with CPL now with that mentality.
