    The Road to Qatar.

News about CONCACAF WCQ It seems that the new rumor is that FIFA rejected the Concacaf WCQ of 3 groups of 4, considering that six games are too few to qualify for the World Cup. The world entity wants the top 6 to be involved in previous rounds and there is talk of an octagonal. According to several journalistic sources, the final decision will be at the beginning of July. We are co-hosting the 2026 WC so we are already there. Serbia always has a good squad, and their chances are good as well, especially in an expanded format. Serbia will be a tough squad to crack, but so will Canada. We already have a youngish squad with some generational talent in the 2000 birth year. There are also some very good prospects coming along in 2001, 2002 (age group qualified for the U17 WC), 2003 and 2004 (the birth year beat Mexico in the U15 Concacaf championships 2-0). I have said many times in numerous threads that the days of players walking onto the Canadian team be

  6. No, because to be considered a rookie, you need to not have started a Bundesliga game before and be under 23 and have less than 450 Bundesliga minutes. Davies had 74 Bundesliga minutes last season. It's like to be eligible for Rookie of the Year in other sports, there are often restrictions about age and games played. This is not the exception.

  8. Davies player of the month for Bayern. Nice accomplishment considering the numbers Lewandowski has put up all season.

  9. Preface this by saying I was never a fan of Davies at leftback. However, after watching all the Bayern games since their return changed my mind. I also think that given our current players we should be playing the same formation as Bayern. I realize we don't have the same CBs covering for Davies mistakes that Bayern does. However with the exception of Mexico and maybe US, he also isn't facing anywhere close to Bundesliga competition so that cancels each other out. Having 2 high level holding midfielders will also help cover any mistakes and hopefully allow us to control the game. The

I don't understand this whole world cup narrative that is posted whenever we talk about a dual national. What player is actually going to take the fact in 2026 Canada will be hosting some games for a World Cup when they decides who he's going to play for. If I'm in a dual nationals position where I have allegiances to both countries: I'm looking at which country is going to give me more caps, the quality of the nations squad, and which one I have a bigger connection to. No one's going to think I was going to play for Iran but then then the fact Qatar was hosting a world cup made me change my m

What you write has a lot of logic. Two rounds of direct elimination: 35 to 16, 16 to 8, and the 8 finalists in two groups of 4. At least 10 matches would be played to go to the World Cup: a decent number of games

  18. In basketball circles they always talk about both the Steve Nash effect and the Vince Carter effect on inspiring our current crop of talent. I guarantee you there are young kids out there who will see the success of Davies and David and either choose soccer over other sports or grow up with the belief they too can become a superstar in a sport that when I was their age I grew up thinking Canadians couldn't compete in

  19. There is a virtual press conference next Thursday to announce a new League 1 Ontario team for the 2021 season. It will be in Barrie. And the name (only posted here to annoy the 'numbers-in-team-names' haters will be...…. 1812 FC Barrie Ha. Now I can hear all them googling what part Barrie played in the War of 1812. Perhaps like in the case of Yankov it will come down to what team calls him up first. Considering Serbia has all these so-called "quality superstar / world class players", one has to wonder where he would fit in the Serbian set up. Canada on the other hand has less pedigree (because it has been since 1986, of course), so perhaps that gives us the upper hand then? Works for me!

Exactly my point, just because Canada is hosting a World Cup in 2026 won't really factor into a dual national's decision on whether or not to play for Canada. It comes down to which country's squad has more depth and if that player has a connection to one country over the other. For example, Mitrovic was born in Canada and raised here. But if he comes from Serbian roots and he plays his football in Serbia, chances are he will choose them. Why? Serbia will not only give him more caps but he would be surrounded by quality superstar /world class players on that squad and Canada maybe have a coupl

I looked it over from Google Earth. It does have a lot of seats for L1O. Artificial turf with gridiron lines is also not unusual for L1O.

    Andre Hainault to Europe?

Awww, I remember Hainault being a very solid MLS player on a good club. Even banging in a few important goals. its a shame things never clicked when he went to europe. I wonder if he will pull a Mckenna and after many years in Germany he'll stay there and look for coaching jobs when he is done playing?
    1 point
  25. He only joined half the season and hardly played. This is his first full season as a Bayern player so he’s a rookie
    1 point
  26. I love Canadian content but I never found Hainault as a dependable CB. He was slow and his marking was rarely on point. I remember watching him in the U-20 WC and opposition turned him inside out on a regular basis. I wish him all the best and I hope he lands in the CPL to finish out his career (on a team other than my York 9).

  27. They could play the first round outside of the FIFA window for teams 30-35. They did that a few cycles ago. I don't think it would cause too much of a stink in Anguila and Turks & Caicos etc. Not like they have any internationals to get released.

    General Discussion on CMNT

Back in 2018, when Herdman first took over, we played virtually this exact lineup but had Liam Millar at RB. We outscored opponents 14-0. CONCACAF is so variable in quality that I find it really difficult to discuss a strongest 11 without talking about the opponent
    1 point
  31. I'm still all in on the 3-5-2. It gets the best out of Davies and solidifies our CB which is our main weakness. It gives us the most balance between Offence/Defence. I just don't see us needing Osorio when playing vs Mexico, USA or Costa Rica. We already have 6 strong offensive weapons on the field, no need to add Osorio in there. Throwing in Piette also gives more support to the back line while also giving Davies more freedom to venture forward. Need to see a little more of Eustaquio's knee before commiting to him replacing Piette. ZBG and Laryea are interchangeable a

  36. Also to note- the Serbian National Team is hard to get onto. Outside of top players from Partizan and Res Star it’s almost exclusively made up of players from Big 5 leagues or Champions League teams. That being said, Mitrović is only 17 and playing in the top flight. The CSA has better be all over getting him in the program. That’s a very high level for a young player and he has a solid chance to be at a level that he could make their Senior team.

Managed to watch the game. He was fine. Not the most active game. Played both right and left side of the field. Did win a good amount of fouls and took defenders on. Had 2 good chances to score, perhaps should've done better, but being 17 I'll cut him slack. He didn't look out of place playing with older experienced players.

That was a good article but it lost me with the baloney about Har$$$$$. Their was no lasting legacy here from his success in Europe because he shit all over canada. If he had gone the other way and made a real difference in canada, maybe both DEGUZ brothers and ASSOVIC play for canada. Then we do a lot better in every gold cup/WCQ after that and WHOR$$$$ does leave a positive legacy behind.

I don't think it's stated anywhere on the club's website, but 1812 refers to when Barrie was settled during the War of 1812. Looking forward to next summer!

  40. Preben Ganzhorn seems to have been viewed as the main culprit judging from the way he didn't make it into Year 2. Ben Zayandehroudi being let go right now might be related in part to having nothing to sell in ticket terms for the next few months given the way that the island tournament will run past the expected start of the York Lions stadium renovation. The failure of Y9 to draw significant numbers of paying spectators last summer probably didn't help Paul Beirne's cause either towards the end of last season, if he had a significant level of involvement with Y9's launch, given the way p

If the stars ever aligned, it would be great to see David Argyle (Toronto Wolfpack owner) put money into modernising and improving Lamport and then deciding to start a Toronto CPL team to play out of there along with the Wolfpack. Money wouldn’t be an issue for him, it would be if he had any interest in football and if there was political will to do something with lamport as it is an important community venue.

  43. Overall I think the idea of York9 is great. The execution has been the part that was missed. My Main thing is they had to be one of thee most forward thinking CPL clubs, with the reality of Canada's and North America's most elite professional club playing 30mins away, but they were the worst in the CPL in regard to gameday experience, stadium/field arrangement, and general marketing. A simple name change won't do anything to attract more people, they need an ideal stadium environmemt that can be the keepsake for when people do come to experience the team.

In the stands, I usually stand with Gen IX or around them, and I chat Y9 marketing frequently with Ben Z and McNab. Everything I've seen since 2018 tells me that this team is first and foremost, and will always likely be, a Vaughan team. Owners are Vaughan/Concord heavyweights, most supporters are from Woodbridge, Maple, etc, the team has heavy connections to Vaughan Azzurri and OSA, which is HQed in Vaughan, and the initial rumoured new s

All factors considered, with TFC and Y9FC in place, with L1O in place, with what the distinct former municipalities and suburban municipalities are like, to me, the only place in the GTA that makes sense and would have a high likelihood of succeeding like Halifax would be Sauga, with a stadium close to Square One. That's the only place dense enough, and with its own distinct sense of community, and far away from both BMO and York Lions to make sense to me. At the moment, I'm not really seeing another downtown TO team, or one in Downsview, or one near North York Centre, or one in Scarlem,

  48. Surely the discussion is moot for the fall 2020 matches ... I very much doubt that any foreign teams from most Concacaf countries are going to be coming to Canada before the end of 2020 unless they quarantine for 2 weeks when they get here ...which seems unlikely. Costa Rica isn't doing badly, but many areas haven't even peaked yet, like Mexico ... and California. I don't see how this works, other than doing a tournament somewhere for the entire 4-team group, and quarantining everyone when they get there. Some parts of Canada might be Covid-free, and other parts are all improving - but t
