    York9 - Season Thread 2020

With respect to Estevez, all anybody here in this thread has to do is look at Stouffvillain's proposed depth chart for Y9's 2020 season to see how much the Y9 fans generally rate Estevez. Something like the 6th choice in the front 3 going in. You'd think that it'd have to be like a top 10 player in the league that may get a shot in the Dutch D1. I think most Y9 fans would be hard-pressed to put Estevez in their top 10 for Y9 last season. I liked him as an option off the bench that did well in his minutes with his dribbling and shooting, but I thought he was quite raw tactically and decision-making. At least that is an aspect that can most definitely be coached. A friend did note that ADO Den Haag is owned by a Chinese company, and for sure, owners will be friendly for sure, similar to Wu Lei at Espanyol for example, which is all cool, more opportunities for more players. I think a lot of Y9 and CPL players will take positives from this move, thinking, if Estevez can make a big move like this, they can too for sure, which is the long-term goal for most of the CPL players.

I don't think that he'd be eligible for a club for the current season mainly because he's already played European football since January. I know they changed the rules that players can play for their new club if transferred in January, but this would be a new interpretation and we still don't know how transfer windows will work because of what happened. To be fair, this season has been unique and I don't think that we can compare it to anything that has happened before. UCL didn't exist 100 years ago.

I get it. There’s no point in talking about what we want to happen if there’s no chance of that actually happening. However I don’t see a way to do the lower-seed tournament and keep it within 12 match days. So I’m kind of hoping that FIFA doesn’t allot us more than 6 windows for qualifying lol Edit: it probably could be done in 6 windows if it is separated into top 12, bottom 23 but then you run into the problem I was talking about before where teams 5-12 are eliminated but your 13th best team is still in qualifying. How does it make sense for Honduras to be eliminated while St Kitts just needs to win a two legged tie to get the 4th spot in Concacaf. It’s enough of a joke as it is but going from our 7th team having a chance to our 13th team is too big of a jump in my opinion.

Even 5 years back..2015 gold cup with Floro. Stama, Ledgerwood, Edgar, Jakovic, Dejong.....Straith Deguzman, Akindele, Piette, Ricketts, Larin. With HAber, Tiebert, Osorio and Hainault as first off the bench. So lets say a 15man rotation, there is only Piette, Osorio, Larin maybe Tiebert and Akindele that would still be there only 5 years later. Hoilet, Cavallini and Borjan prob should have been in 2015 and 2020, but its a hell of a turn over.

The reason this exercise is so silly is because the only "locks" you have are Davies and David, and honestly who knows even then. You could chop and change the other nine guys from my line up and I wouldn't argue.

Carducci -------Zator-Romero-Cornelius ZBG-Kaye-Fraser-Osorio-Davies -----------David-Campbell I wouldnt be surprised if Jayden Nelson or Rutty are sure fire starters by then and I would switch to a 4-3-3 if they emerge. I think a 3-5-2 is the best system with Davies so I am going with that.

I'm with Rob on this one. From a marketing exposure standpoint I want to play the bigger teams but I think we should be able to qualify thru any format. Our current situation really comes down to that ridiculous loss to Haiti. So we need to just suck it up and deal with whatever.

I think the CPL is going to be a diamond in the rough for some of those smaller European leagues/clubs. Clubs can get players of a decent caliber that has shown what they can do in a professional environment that is hungry to achieve more at a nominal fee. The current operating cost of the CPL will mean that clubs will be taking those kinds of fees all day.

I am a Man U fan. I was a huge fan in the 90’s through to about 5 or 6 years ago when I became a father and had less freedom Saturday mornings. When he was on the team it didn’t feel like there was a Canadian on the team. I didn’t get excited when he came on the field, unlike when any Canadian comes on the field for TFC. I don’t think about him much anymore, but I don’t want to say his name on this board and think it’s kind of funny that it is censored here. One point about the lesser De Guzman. You can’t really censor his name unless you censor his full name, or else Julian would get caught in the crossfire.

I guess I look at OH having more of a negative turn as opposed to us missing a huge positive he would have given us. After him it seemed like we lost prospect after prospect (JDG being one of them) and there was just a stink on the program that we couldnt shake.

    The Road to Qatar.

I don’t think he meant that they shouldn’t have a chance. Their chance should just be proportional to their ability. The 16th ranked team would have basically zero chance to make it to the World Cup in your format, whereas the team that won the lower seeded tournament (17th or worse) would have a legitimate chance. That is a crazy way to do qualifying for something as big and important as the World Cup. If we sent a team ranked 17-35 to the World Cup CONCACAF would be the absolute laughing stock as they lose every match by ridiculous margins. Even to send them to the intercontinental playoff would be embarrassing for our confederation. Now if a team ranked 17th went through a legitimate qualifier and beat out all the other teams, that’s a different story.

    The Road to Qatar.

No other confederation has our sort of talent stratification either. Comparing Asia and Concacaf, I created talent bins. They are subjective, but I tried to keep teams of a similar level in the same bin. I created the bins first and then slotted the countries in (by rank) after. This is how it turned out: bin 1: 1-20 bin 2: 21-50 bin 3: 51-80 bin 4: 81-120 bin 5: 121-170 bin 6: 171+ AFC: bin 1: bin 2: 28,33,40,42, bin 3: 55,67,70,71,76,79, bin 4: 82,85,89,94,96,97,99,103,108,113,116, bin 5: 121,124,129,136,138,143,144,147,149,154,155,157,170, bin 6: 173,173,182,187,188,189,190,191,196,199,200,206 CONCACAF: bin 1: 11 bin 2: 22,46,48, bin 3: 62,69,73,80 bin 4: 81,86,105, bin 5: 126,130,139,141,151,158,159,162,166,167,168,170, bin 6: 176,178,179,183,184,193,195,200,203,207,208,210 We are definitely more bottom heavy than Asia is, for example, so it makes sense to me to give these nations in bin 5 and 6 more games against each other, hence nations league and (probably) the lower-seed world cup qualifying tournament. Having them play against stronger teams right out of the gate is a waste for time for everyone involved.

No, I dont think you should forget. We dont have to dwell on it but look at the energy and excitement Davies/David have put into our program. They have moved the national needle as far as soccer is concerned in the country. OH could have done this for us in the 00's. Coming off the Gold cup win, if he hadnt broke our hearts and snubbed the team, who knows what would have happened?? He might not have put us over the hump on the field, but he really killed momentum we had building in the early 00's.

I'm honestly curious at this stage as to what you consider to be "not as bad as we figured or were led to believe" is, and at what stage you'd be willing to admit you were wrong. I'm not even saying we're at that stage. I'm just saying you're very quick to point out other people should admit they're wrong without actually providing any parameters for when you'd have to admit the same thing.

Valour FC Season Thread 2020 2.0

I thought I'd get us started again. We are having a 'Fauxpening Day' virtual tailgate (via Zoom) on Saturday, during the time that we would have gathered pre-game for Valour's season opener. If you want to join, I'll email the link and login info if you RSVP here (Zoom limits the number of people that can login, so that's why we need an RSVP rather than just posting the login info) Rob Gale and Jose Galan will be joining us. We are sending some baby gifts for Jose, and he'll open them during the call. We are also hosting a Quarantine TIFO contest, and the Kings Head is donating a $25 gift card and a scarf as the prize. Rob Gale, Jose Galan & Chris Graves (from the Kings Head) will be judging. You can find more details about the contest here: https://www.redriverrising.ca/2020/04/28/kings-head-quarntine-tifo-contest/ We'll also sing a few songs, as we would have on the march to the match. We are encouraging people to order take out from the places they would have gathered at pre-game (particularly the Kings Head, Nicolinos & Stone Angel). Since the tailgate starts early on saturday, you may need to plan ahead and order tomorrow (Friday). The Kings Head has put together an RRR Tailgate package (6 cans of beer, a frozen pizza and skittles for $35) - https://www.kingshead.ca/new-products-1/valour-fc-red-river-rising-tailgate-package

I feel like I’m talking to a wall here. Nobody outside of the top 10 (maybe 11 but not really) has a realistic shot of beating out the top teams in CONCACAF over a full group stage where randomness is removed. Anybody can beat anybody in a 2 legged tie. Imagine Honduras plays Dominican Republic and in the first tie Honduras gets CONCACAFed by the ref sending off a Honduran player and giving a red card in the process by being fooled by a dive. Now we’re looking at potentially a multiple goal victory in leg 1 for Dominican Republic and they can just bunker in leg 2. Our qualifying should not be left to this kind of randomness where some garbage team can slip in because our confederation decided to use such a ludicrous system. Let everyone play over a sufficient amount of games to eliminate the randomness and have the best teams earn their way in.

Maybe the international bit is a stretch, but Davies could play in two world cups. That is very much in the realm of possibility. Obviously getting to a quarter final and scoring is more difficult with Canada than England though.. But ranking international careers depends on what you place stock in. OH only had 42 international caps. Would Davies have a bigger international career if he doubles that cap total, albeit for a much smaller country? Is it more memorable to be the star of a smaller team or a role player on a bigger team? I guess it is a matter of opinion. No definitive right answer.

That's not the argument. It's that the 17th seed shouldn't be one tie away from the intercontinental playoffs, which is why this format will never be implemented.

The more scouting eyeballs on a game the better for a player's prospects of being noticed. Doing well in World Cup qualifiers for Taiwan appears to be what got Estevez on overseas club's radar. Check out what Angus McNab says in the CanPL website story. Not saying CanPL is a complete dead zone that way but any kind of paywall is going to limit the level of exposure provided compared to a national team appearance, so he was right to jump all over that opportunity.

Well it wouldn’t be just one Home and away tie, it would be two. Playoff to see who the 4th best team is and then the intercontinental playoff, so not exactly easy for the 17th place team if you use this format.

    The Road to Qatar.

Yup, and if that's the case there's no need to have a final. Here's an idea: scrap the final, have a semi-final for the group winners, but also have a semi-final for the group runner-ups. winners of the "A" semi-final make the world cup losers of the "A semi-final play 3rd-4th match, winner qualifies for world cup, loser is eliminated winners of the "B" semi-final play each other. Winner plays lower seed tournament winner losers of "B" semi-final eliminated. Keeping the group runner-ups alive adds to the drama. Having the best runner-up play the lower-seed champion gives a more balanced, fair and interesting match up. Eliminating the 4th place team (loser of A semi-final) is a nice twist. At that point they already had 2 chances to qualify for the world cup, I am okay with them getting eliminated at that point.
