  3. I was optimistic about this league from the start, but my sense of optimism is growing. Not only has the league handled itself very well in terms of commercial partnerships, but the influx of very interesting (albeit on paper at this point) young foreign talent across the board promises to raise the quality on-field as well (which was decent to begin with). Also, let’s not undersell the importance of Atlético Madrid joining the project as a club owner. They are an immensely powerful and capable entity that will bring money and knowledge to the league. They’ll also undoubtedly lend th

That's the replica. Official match balls by any company all sell for that $150 range, regardless of the league. That's just the price of things, so this CPL ball is priced normally.

Good little article, thanks for the link. There are a few details there about how contract options work, saying that a player whose option is taken by the club will get a contract improvement. And that there are performance bonuses as well. Another thing we know but I was not sure was confirmed altogether is that there are no trades in CPL, you play for a club and can turn down a trade if it were to happen. Thus distancing CPL from the MLS which provides no security for a player who might want to settle in a specific place, choosing just that team and thinking of his family's future. The

I watched a year of Ballou at Barça B, and he was often asked to track back and hold, even deep into his own end. And then would progress slowly, modestly, forward, into attack. He was fairly disciplined and did not do badly. Remember half of that was in Spanish 2nd division. I am more concerned that there is no one telling him to go for it, to break some balls going forward, to take risks and not worry about it not working. How many attacking moves are successful, maybe 5% overall? He really needs to be psychologically molded into being daring and reckless, rather than the other, which I

Seriously? I mean . . . it's a *ball*. I desperately want the league to suceed, but realistically, the level of play, marketing, salaries, etc. for CPL will never be on the same level as the kind you see in the Bundesliga or among UEFA Champions League players. I just don't think we'll be able to build a rabid enough/large enough fanbase to make these kinds of sales viable. Hell, looking at the MLS website, you can get their 2020 NATIVO ball for $19.99. I'm all about supporting and promoting the league, but this seems insane to me. If I had kids, I'd love to buy them this sort

His first line was just showing how people are just saying contradictory things as if they are fact, without giving a source.

  17. Can't be York now but maybe Valour especially since he worked with Rob Gale in 2011 with the U17 team and Gale has been quite successful in recruiting former youth players. Ottawa would be great too though. Him and Fisk would give them a great foundation that could be around for years. I do suspect Ottawa because this is eerily similar to the signing of Fisk in that he was linked to a team (FC Edmonton) and then there was silence for an oddly long time - whereas most teams are now training together. Edit: And they just announced Coupland!! What a coup.

  18. Was just about to post the same thing. The Arsenal links aren't going away. Mixed feelings about whether I want him to go there. I am hoping for a Bundesliga move. There may be a lot of pressure considering the recent failings of the Gunners. It's a big club and one that I always liked growing up, but perhaps not the best environment for David. If he was going to England I might prefer the foxes or perhaps wolves, although I can't remember if the latter are linked to him. Hard to keep track since so many clubs want him. Those two clubs are strong but with lower expectations, so

Can't remember why but I came into a 12 panel match ball a few years ago (the style with the long panels, sort of looks like a volley ball). Bought it, wasn't cheap, $100 at the time I think. In the 30 years I've been kicking leather it was the truest ball I've ever owned. By truest I mean most consistant/predictable. The action (english) was just so consistant, with all the variables in mind of course. Took some getting used to but became a favourate on my rec team quite quickly. When we were kids we'd use the old 12 panel that my Mum came up when we'd visit my old Gido (her

  22. I am ready to declare that the Canadian women's teams from senior to youth have officially entered the boring zone. Today's match was another display of their passive aggressive style of passing it sideways, passing it backwards, taking 1 shot, having no shots on target, dominated in possession and of course no goals scored. Individually, the players have largely stagnated. Collectively, they have lost their dynamic offensive nature that was more evident under Herdman. They play a variety of tactical systems but all have produced little to no goals against top 10 teams.

Bingo. I've never kicked a match quality ball in my life, hence my shock. And I dare wager that a lot of casual fans and parents never have, either. I get that this appeals to/is normal for the diehards among us, but I am concerned that without replica options via the CPL shop that this may strike a lot of people as too much.

My 19yr old nephew plays in Argentina at a good level and he'd love to come to Canada and play in the CPL with an eye to also becoming Canadian one day. Any ideas how he contacts the CPL's Soccer Operations central scouting setup or 21 Club? Is this the best route or should he/agent reach out to each team separately? (Apologies if this is the wrong thread for this sort of question - feel free to point me to different direction. Thanks in advance!)

  30. I think it goes like this: if someone in the potential buying club leaks interest, they lowball the transfer figure. No club wants to be seen as overpaying for a player, especially with the risk of things not working out. If David's agent leaks a figure, or any of the intermediaries involved, or Gent, they push it up higher so the speculation stays buoyant, whether there are real offers at that price or not. As most major clubs do not win any silverware in a given season, they are all under huge pressure, with the added factor that right now there are some young guys tearing things u

  37. Yes, probably from the outset is back up to Ugarriza but like we were just saying yesterday (re: Javier Martina) sometimes you never know what you're going to get. All he'll need is an opportunity and who knows what we'll see. Tyler Attardo, Easton Ongaro and Terran Campbell were all expected to be back ups last year and outperformed expectations. I think that is something we don't have, that trequartista type player but we don't have enough at the back and have one U21 player thus far and 20 roster spots now filled.

  38. It'd be interesting to put a relative value on the non-salary benefits that players receive in CPL. And which of them are considered standard, which are only being offered by some teams. In lower division football apartments for players are not uncommon, the world over. I recall hearing Piette shared an apartment when at Izarra in Spain, which was a very modest club for third tier. Whitecaps before MLS had apartments in False Creek South (where I am when I go back), I know because I saw players running along False Creek seawall or even training in the parks (and I think they still may ha

  43. Huge gamble. THIS is rolling the dice. If it doesn't work, it'll be another huge contract he can't unload along with Camacho, Urruti & Bush. If it works They'll have one of the toughest midfields in MLS. DP's would be DM, CM and AM. Kinda strange at the same time, considering what they're really missing is a striker and depth at LB.
