Bookmark this page if you can't watch live. I'm going to record the stream and post it here with no results. As always, I don't know if my laptop will die mid-match/upload but I'll try! I should have it up around 10pm EST, if it doesn't work and the CSA archives the match on YouTube I'll post a link here.

I’m not sure it really matters if the teams are called clubs or franchises... the important thing is how they feel... and to me they feel incredibly different to the corporate feel mls gives out. Having Rob Gale come out in an interview and be so honest about player contracts, and laughing at the idea FC Edmonton signs Bustos.... and then doubling down and essentially calling LBG an average player that they have a few of already.... is so different. That wouldn’t happen in MLS. It feels real. Not to mention both Gale and Bobby have come out and talked about moving players onto better leagues in the past few days instead of playing dumb and acting like they’re on par with Europe. The league is doing a good job of letting the teams sort of do their own thing while keeping the business in order... while I’d definitely like more transparency, right now things are going pretty well.

Canada was drawn qualifying group B with EL Salvador, Honduras, and Haiti. Group A is USA, Mexico, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic. I think we got a very favourable draw, still will be tough, but definitely attainable.

A franchise is regulated by strict guidelines set out by a Board of Governors/Owners or a league. Things like suppliers, marketing, branding, labour relations, etc... are are regulated by an agreed upon set of rules. Clubs have more freedom, they may be affiliated and work in concert on certain aspects of business operations but are not always obligated to do so. We can see evidence of this in the CPL in certain unique stadiums aspects, the international player draft and the seemingly fluid player movement (no complex player rights scheme). I think the CPL is neither one or the other in the truest sense but probably somewhere in the middle, most likely closer to the club model. Anyone who thinks they can say definitively which model the CPL has implemented is not telling the truth.

Agreed with @BradMack - there is just something so raw about the league. It's like true lower league football and everyone is open and hoenst about their position. No one is trying to pretend that this is top-tier football where you need to pay EPL prices like in MLS.

From a completely selfish perspective, if he stayed at Liverpool, that would increase his chances of being available for Olympic qualifying. Good for his development? Debatable. Would make El Hombre happy? Most definitely. And isn't that what's most important?

Not this again, give it up, league itself, who knows more than anyone what it is, has said CPL is a club based league, NOT franchise and NOT single entity. MLS is a single entity league with business units, not clubs. USL is a franchise league.

    CPL new teams speculation

I've lost interest in anything that comes out of Clanachan's mouth on the expansion front. Heard enough of the same from Bill Peterson during the NASL days. Clanachan hasn't shown himself to be any more reliable. I'll believe it when there's a formal announcement. Until then, it just seems like hot air.

I'll give a legitimate reason: How about he's a 20yo professional without a contract, and probably seeking a good team Ligue 1, Germany, Belgium... somewhere in Europe. Is it worth him risking an injury, which would affect his immediate future contract? High risk, real low reward for him coming. We were okay with Larin rejecting the call for his career... Look what that did for him!

    Zachary Brault-Guillard

Word is that discussions are still ongoing with Lyon, but the roadblock is that they are asking for a lot of money. I assumed it would be for another loan but seems that Montreal want a purchase. To be honest I don't mind Lyon slapping a high valuation on Brault-guillard. Part of it surely is them taking advantage of the fact Zachary is a Canadian international and is wanted by a Canadian club, but the other part is that they clearly think a lot of him, which is flattering. If they didn't value him they'd cut him loose for cheap. He may never get into the Lyon first team, but the fact they are seeking to maximize his transfer price is positive for his reputation.

I'm not making anything up, he had problems last year with Impact. He has barely played in the last year, and not going to this camp will hurt his chances at the u-23. If it comes down to him or one of Shafflebourg/Borges/M. Choiniere etc...I dont know if he beats those guys out just based on promise he showed 2-3 years ago.

Agreed as it's all about perspective. It just seems like some people on this board are using the "franchise" vs "club" tag to the CPL teams to differentiate themselves from the MLS/USL when in fact, as I have now concluded, this point or description has no real relevance. Personally, I'll exit the discussion.

I find it odd that the CSA wouldn't use OS as a possible platform to stream the next two CMNT games. If they can make them available on their own website, why not let OS stream them to increase exposure to the platform?

CDN coach. MDS has brought in CDN everywhere he has been. Look at Koch down in USL, 3 CDN brought in this year. We need to develop more coaches, get more doors open for the kids. I hope some of the CPL coaches can move up to bigger leagues.

He's a decent signing. I'm not necessarily thrilled about loading up on mid 30s internationals, but even if their physical attributes are diminishing (obvious especially with Paolucci this past season) they should at least bring some needed professionalism to the side.

The definitions of franchise versus club teams are not clearly defined. If there has to be scale scale of club <----------> franchise then it seems CPL is further to the club side than franchise side compared to MLS based on the little info we have. No league in the world is likely completely on the club side (according to this made up scale) as then they would not have any financial reasons to play against each other.

Settling on a squad and giving them some preparation games will be a key to whether we have a shot at qualification or not.

    General MLS Talk 2020

Ok fair enough but was just trying to basically show that some of these guys spent a lot more time with other clubs than they did with Vaughan. Alistair Johnson for example was with Aurora FC from the age of 8 until the age of 15. That’s 8 years and a lot of his formative years at that.

I've heard that he'll translate to a box to box mid or right back in the pros. So I would assume he's also suitable for a RM spot. Expansion teams worked out well for Larin and Kaye so let's hope this does as well. I do remember this guy playing against HFX in the Voyageurs Cup as he picked up three yellows (sent off second match).

    The Road to Qatar.

Yeah, all we can do is just put pressure on them by winning games and getting points. If they waste the next window as well with “pointless” games, we can close the ground even more. After that, we can reassess what is needed and whether or not we need to go for the Hail Mary by playing risky teams for higher potential points.

    The Road to Qatar.

Agreed, but let’s make them start playing games first of all. Say we do what I suggested and go for 8 points in March. They may decide to play 2 weak teams to try to get 6 points. If they lose one of those games, now we’re in the lead heading into the final window. If they win, THEN we go all out in the final window and play some really big teams.

Davies didn't have a great game against Haiti either. I could probably go through our entire pool and pick out a time when they've all fallen short at some point or another. Remember Piette was this whipping boy just a few years ago. Prior to the Haiti game he hadn't made any mistakes and to be fair.. I'm still not convinced that Godinho was at fault for more than one goal in that Haiti game.

Forwards Akeem Garcia, Alessandro Riggi and Ibra Sanoh have also signed." https://canpl.ca/article/wanderers-sign-former-valour-midfielder-louis-beland-goyette LBG was Valour's Player of the Year for 2019 IMHO. So my opinion. I think if we are really thinking long term about 2026 we try to get as many of the u23s players from the current senior men’s national team to participate in the Olympic qualifiers. Yes that includes Liam. My thinking is first it’s game time together to build rapport and cohesion that can only help long term. 2nd I would love to see the best of our young talent play together and third and this is personal I would love to see us qualify the thought of Liam participating in an Olympics For Canada Would be amazing I won’t pretend to understand the road to Qatar through the hex mess.(mathematically) Yes we need friendlies in March but we have enough depth now to let the youngsters play in the qualifying I looked it up but it falls on the full march international break...8 teams the two semi final winners qualify. We put in our strongest team I feel we have a good chance...

If we have a home match in March it will be in Vancouver. Canada has never (in modern history, anyway) played a home match outside BC in March or even April. No nation will agree to play a friendly in Toronto (or Edmonton, etc.) in March. The USA won't play us again so soon after the two Nations League matches.
