  1. Every Euro someone complains to me why Canada didn't make it.... ... yet that same person will expound how ignorant I must be about soccer 'cause I'm Canadian and they are [insert nationality here] EDIT: I would replace [Insert nationality here] with [insert ethnic background of country I have never been to but utilize for my own personal validation and identity and wield over others when convenient]

  2. A couple notes: 1) I follow Canada Soccer and many other soccer accounts, players, teams on many social media platforms and I am constantly seeing Canada vs USA - A rivalry renewed advertisements on all platforms. I also think "big brother" knows a little bit of my soccer history and following. But, overall I have been pleasantly surprised with the marketing I have been seeing for this game. For those not on social media, probably not seeing too much. 2) I can also attest to the TFC fans being very ignorant to the national team. For instance, next to my seats at BMO, there are t

  7. C’mon, take off your rose coloured glasses. We’re doing very well presently, yes, but that doesn’t take us to their level. I reject that we need to heighten expectations - I would argue the opposite. We haven’t had a meaningful result since maybe Honduras at home in WCQ. And our recent tests v Mexico and then Haiti were failures. Just because David and Davies are promising, doesn’t mean the USA doesn’t have a superior lineup in the vast majority of positions. To draw this game would be a sign of progress, the first real evidence of progress in a very long time.

  8. CSA twitter just posted a video of Cavallini arriving at Pearson with his wife and kids and his own parents greeting them. Tons of excitement and happy to see each other. This has got to play a huge reason the games are played in Toronto (player preference).

  9. Yes, and some other factors IMO (in no particular order): Stadium location: although beautiful and reasonably easy to get to, for most of the CRD, Langford is a still seen as a place that is "out of town" Dates: so many weeknights where fighting the traffic makes people reluctant to make the trip Times: weekend games kicking off mid-day or early afternoon during the summer is ridiculous. The 18-35 demographic (the core of any effective sports marketing effort) and families are enjoying outdoor activities during the day. New team, new league: this town still remembers th

  11. I still hear casuals say 'I didn't even know Canada has a soccer team' We're not going to change perceptions until we make an actual World Cup

  12. It's because the men's team is a "perennial loser", or at least that is the perception. That perception won't change overnight when it is so easy to pretend to be English or Portuguese or Irish or Spanish or Italian when soccer comes up. That's far and wide across the country though, not just in Toronto. Little by little it is changing which is cause for optimism.

  15. I agree that he has it is tough with Cruz Azul's midfield and agree that this might not be the game to throw him in. But Cruz Azul's midfield isn't performing up to Cruz Azul standards over the past season. Along with Yotun, Pineda is fantastic. Elias, Baca & Rodriguez are all strong as well. Did you ever watch him play for Chaves or Portugal U21? He was regularly Chaves best player in games. In Portugal U21 he spearheaded that defensive midfield position alongside players such as Joao Felix, Diogo Jota, Gedson & Horta. Many of his teammates are already being capped by the Portuga

  18. Quantum mechanics is easier to explain than Nations League. I gave up doing it, and started just calling this World Cup Qualifying, and it is in some sense technically true. I am certain, as I am sure they have also found, that trying actually works against you.

  19. Testaments of Herdman’s scouting network, don’t show this to SpecialK. On on a side note, I really hope to see Klaidi Cela on this roster. Has shown great ability in limited opportunities. And is versatile as a wide midfielder or more of a fullback.

  23. I haven't even seen him on the Cruz Azul bench. Even before his injury he wasn't guaranteed anything, coming from a low-table Portugese side. Furthermore, the Portugese manager who brought him in is now gone. I too am guilty of pegging him as a proper Liga MX player, but it remains to be seen just how good he is. Yotun, formerly of malmo and Orlando City, is a starting centre midfielder for Cruz Azul right now. He is a good player, underrated even, but Eustaquio is going to have a real fight to win a spot from him. If he does, we know we have added a real quality midfielder to

  24. So much of what you said applies to a lot of teams too. I really can't understand why they have so many afternoon games in the middle of summer. The product is going to suffer if teams are playing on turn in 35C+ heat. Afternoon games make sense in the spring and fall, but there should only be evening and night games played during the summer

  25. I encounter the same shit in Vancouver as I do here. I have banged my head on the walls of this garbage in the soccer cafes of Commercial, College and Jean Talon. It's the same everywhere. The crowd would be better in Vancouver. I suspect the average ticket prices would be less, on average with a larger lower bowl. $70 outside the south end is probably too high. One of the problems, other than grass, is that you can double the number in Vancouver and the CSA would still make less money based on the stadium deal. This is also the long weekend everyone closes down their cottages

  26. Yeah I know....I do attend and follow TFC games but it's frustrating that this city can attract over 25K supporters for our local club, yet a significant number of those fans are oblivious re the magnitude of the game next Tuesday 😯

Found on the google groups archive of rec.sport.soccer from 1996 regarding MLS TV coverage: "they'll be all over the place. ABC will show a few games - all-star andchampionship final, for instance, and probably some mid-season NY-LAmatch. ESPN will show about 10 games (i think) - something like one everyother week. ESPN2 will show more, a game of the week; finally, Univisionwill broadcast some in spanish, but i don't know if they will be aseparate block of games or co-transmissions of ABC/ESPN/ESPN2 games." So, not lacking in exposure even though it's a far cry from the coverage y

I remember that game as well. I remember searching for MLS coverage/games for the first few weeks of the season and giving up. The only thing I saw was a single highlight/mention of the inaugural game on I believe it was CNN Headline News. In Canada I believe the MLS Cup final was the only game on TV. I assume there were games on TV in the USA, but I have also heard that in the early years MLS was paying to get TV coverage, rather than networks paying MLS. I don't think the details are known, perhaps it was just covering production costs, and I don't know for sure if that started right from ye

  29. So I attended four professional games this year, a lot less then I planned but sometimes life gets in the way, TFC vs. Independiente, Blainville vs York9, Ottawa Fury vs. HFX and TFC vs Orlando and I only paid for one game, so free tickets are distributed at all levels.

Wait what?!?! Are you suggesting that the MediaPro deal was a figment of our imagination? It's actually not a "massive" amount but it is significant enough to make the league viable.

  35. Some of the marquee guys that didnt succeed prob are overrated or on the downslide eh? Or they just couldnt mesh with new team, different styles etc. Not every peg fits in a round hole eh? The fact that plenty of L10 guys did come in and did better than "marquee" signings, as well as the University kids success just shows that the level your coming from doesnt equate how you'll do in CPL.

  36. I don't see TFC giving him a DP deal and I don't see him going to any other MLS club. I think he would probably take a slight pay cut though, and I don't see him getting anything near £1.5M again on anything but a short contract. Plus I could see league head office finding some extra Garber bucks for his marketing value. If he comes to MLS I think it'll be to TFC on a ~4 year +850K TAM deal.

I would be shocked if CPL received a cent from Mediapro. If in fact Mediapro is producing and distributing the games with no charge to CPL I would say that is a great deal for the league.

  38. Met a few TFC fans outside BMO field yesterday and asked if they were attending the Oct 15th game. Their response "Altidore and Bradley are playing in that game right?".......sometimes I wonder if TFC fans are really soccer fans. A lot seem to be totally clueless about the CMNT. On a brighter note met a young soccer fan today who told me he has seen a lot of ads for the game.

  39. "Delighted"? I think that's a bit much for an expected result. We drew the States in 2012, 2013 and were minutes away in 2016... since that time we have improved and they have gone down a bit. I think expectations need heightening.

Don't disagree that it's a lower priority but having a radio partner provides more exposure for people who listen to sports radio (assuming the city has one). If they are broadcasting a game, they will likely promote it during the morning and afternoon rush hour shows. They will often have a weekly soccer show where they talk about the team. Even if people never actually listen to games on the radio (which can be a good option if you're stuck driving around) you will get the team and their games exposed to fans of other local teams.

  41. Finally saw some York 9 advertisement. Some signage posted on the light standards in the Longo’s parking lot at Weston and Major Mackenzie. Some were pictures of Doner, some Aparicio, standard in game photo with a come and watch type wording. I’ll try to go back tomorrow in the day and get a photo. I mean better late than never but why this little bit of advertising now with the season just about over? York Region should’ve been littered with these things in March/April.

  43. Purely out of curiosity, are you anticipating that the MLS teams will have their salary cap and cost structure grandfathered into the CPL's salary cap level, or are you imagining that the CSA is just going to tell the likes of MLSE "Don't worry, nothing is going to change there is no difference at all in the two leagues, but you do have to get rid of 95% of your players - even the ones still under contract - to fit in under the significantly-reduced salary cap - which shouldn't be a problem for you guys given that you will probably lose 95% revenue as well given that most of your existing fans

  44. Thomas was hyped because everyone knew him. Perfect size for a CB. 4 year starter at Syracuse, drafted by TFC, 4 years and over 100 starts in USL, played for the Canada U23’s. A lot of people thought a good season in the CPL and he could have had a chance to play for the CMNT.

I wholeheartedly agree. When I watched their practices in preseason he looked so strong and commanding. I honestly thought that he would be in the mix for the CMNT. He had a great year the year before in USL, and I was genuinely excited, but have now been left feeling disappointed with the way the season has gone. Maybe this is due to coaching, structure, players he has been playing with, but I hope that next year he can regain his confidence and form.
