    CPL new teams speculation

I am no lawyer, and I have no access to the specific contract in question, but it would seem highly probable that their obligations to USL would be subject to them receiving the necessary approvals from the governing authorities (CONCACAF, CSA, and maybe USSF). Since sanctioning is beyond their control, it seems like the contract would have to recognize and account for this. Any lawyer doing due diligence on the draft agreement would have to flag this and make sure it is built into the terms of the agreement. Thus I would be surprised if their "obligations" are, in fact, legally compelling in the event that sanctioning is withheld.

    The Road to Qatar.

If FIFA Rankings are the only acceptable way to seed teams for WCQ then CONCACAF really needs to somehow address allowing non FIFA members into Gold Cup and Nations League. There just isn't a level playing field if teams are playing one maybe two games a tournament against non FIFA opponents.

Yep, wing and central mid. I've always been a big fan of Haworth, but with the amount of great young talent we have at RB and on the wing there's no chance we're calling up a 30 year-old USL player for those positions.

Really pleased with this squad as a whole, just looking at the Haiti QF Match, the 3 goals were: a huge blunder (short pass-back to the keeper), A foul in the area which was called a penalty (both by Godihno) and the winner had Davies not marking his player. Im so happy that Davies, MAK and even Hutchinson can go back to playing in the centre midfield and on the wing. Our forward group is top 3 in CONCACAF, and our midfield solid and strong as well! With our Goalkeepers very confident in Borjan and Crepeau Our insecurities always lied with our defence and Herdman thought long and hard about this and decided to do something about this. Replacing Adekugbe with Morgan, Sliding Miller to back up LB as he’s been having a good first season with OSC, keeping Cornelius-Henry pair and ZBG/Godihno for Cordova, Laryea at RB. Also Straith and Vitoria is a good assurance A proper back 4 and if we can be clean and organized then we will be winning a lot more matches. It still needs some gelling, re-incorporing (5/8 is new), but certainly a huge improvement. Now if only James could return and we could get Gutierrez and Tomori to commit we’re great all around We out scored 14-6 and it was big mistakes vs Haiti and the Mexico Match has us face the best team in our region and top 20 in the world. Which at times we look on par but the experience was positive despite the loss With Eustaquio coming into the fold next month and our captain Arfield returning too the future looks good. Want to see MAK become more of a protagonist from now on, also want Tesho more involved too. Larin is the 4th best FW and last player of the group, based on current form. If Millar or anyone else start ripping it up in a respectable league cyle’s spot is jeopardized Will Johnson and David Wotherspoon are utility, camp players. But good to have them and fill the absences for now Excited for the Carducci call up, gives the CPL a good look and he’s our 3rd best keeper right now as Leutwiler and Thomas aren’t playing in their clubs. James could have took that spot too. 31, 25 and 22 agewise looks like a good mix. St. Clair and Pantemis also exciting prospects My guess is first leg at home is 5-0 and the second 3-0, we have a solid core of 20 footballers that can help us achieve something at the end of the day - we need results but from top to bottom I’d say we’re on par with Costa Rica, Honduras and Panama in terms of quality I do see it being difficult but not impossible for qualifying for the hex considering that we’re 8th and we need to be top 6 in the rankings. Cuba is lower and USA is a lot higher, also CSA doesn’t like friendlies so there’s that. We might have to do the hunger Games tournament, winner takes 0.25 of a WC spot

I like all the call ups, especially Lareya an Fraser. Too much needless handwringing about Straith: too easy a a whipping boy candidate but clearly provides some maturity and leadership. The guy's worked his ass off to forge a pro career in a competitve environment and knows what it takes to be a pro.

http://www.guatefutbol.com/2019/08/28/guatemala-jugara-dos-amistosos/ Guatemala is looking to play a friendly on November 12th in the USA. Possibly opponents are Haiti, Nicaragua & Canada. Nicaragua would have to play 3 games in the window so I think that would be a little crazy. If they play in Florida, Haiti will make them more money so I wouldn't hold my breath but if the game is in Texas or Los Angeles, we have a chance of being the selected opponent. The key info here is that the CSA is actually looking at friendlies. Reminder: The FIFA window is from November 11th to November 19th, but that early in the window means the squad would be mostly CanPL/USL/MLS(non-playoff) players I would think. Not the full starting XI that would play the USA a few days later. (ex: Crépeau likely in goal, Borjan still jet-lagged).

Looks like the US is having another U23 camp. Canada on the other hand is content to let another U23 cycle go to waste. This is going to be the U20s all over again. First time the team meets will be a week before the tournament and then they're gonna be shocked when they crash out.

    The Road to Qatar.

We still should have been playing friendlies to develop as a cohesive unit and bring in different sets of players to test out their full abilities. This still isn't an excuse for one friendly in 18 months. If the CSA's logic was "we're already guarantted the hex so we don't need to play any friendlies" then that was flat out wrong. Friendlies should have been played regardless.

Just thinking now, many of these concacaf nations play friendlies in the USA due to the money that can be made from ex-pats. Haiti, Nicaragua...these teams have fan bases in the US..so they are attractive for those trying to make a buck off friendlies. Canada does not offer this. If everyone else is playing in the US to make money, and we are not a money-maker, perhaps this hampers our efforts to schedule friendlies? What do you guys think?

Given how weak our CB depth is, I think a case could be made for Dominic Zator to get the call. He's been one of if not the best CB in CPL and unlike journeymen Straith and Vittoria has the bulk of his career ahead of him not behind.

James is not a world beater either. Let's remember that. I rate him above Straith, but I don't think he's so much better that it's an injustice to include Adam ahead of him. Straith is only 3 years older than James by the way, but he has so much experience that I think we automatically put him in the Hainault/Jakovic category. He is actually closer in age to James/Henry then Hainault/Jakovic.

The type of player this board loves; a player nobody knew was Canadian and that is already playing professionally! His twitter: http://twitter.com/wardesam He re-tweeted Peter Raco's tweet which kinda confirms the story. Obviously not called to the latest Irish U21 (U23) squad for September but the current cycle is for 98's and younger and he is a 98': http://www.fai.ie/ireland/news/ireland-u-21-squad-announced-for-armenia-sweden To get playing time with the Republic of Ireland's U21(U23) squad at centre-midfield, he would need to prove he is better than: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conor_Coventry I assume? Obviously not the level of a senior #CanMNT player yet but certainly deserves a serious look for our U23 squad. I'm not sure if he would need to file a one-time-switch. No mention of the those Ireland U18 games that Peter mentions on Transfermarkt: http://www.transfermarkt.us/sam-warde/profil/spieler/429248

    The Road to Qatar.

“We were originally notified that it was a CONCACAF-rankings table and we were tracking everything and building all our planning on the CONCACAF rankings, and that’s what had originally been presented when the Nations League was formally presented to the member associations,” Herdman said in a conference call with a select group of media outlets Wednesday announcing the squad selection for the game against Cuba. “That changed in July 2019. So we woke up one morning and the rankings table isn’t there anymore, it’s gone. We changed gears, that’s in the past and the future is the future now. We’re focused now on what we can control and what we have to do now to put ourselves in the best position to qualify for the HEX (top-six).” I'm glad the boss still wants us to make the top 6 and make the Hex, at least try. Herdman still executed to be in the top 6 in CONCACAF rankings and originally make the hex. These 2 matches vs Cuba would have gotten us tons of CONCACAF points & 1 result vs USA and we probably in. What an annoyance, additional annoyance is we played FG & Martinique basically earning 0 Fifa points.

    Vancouver Whitecaps 2019 Season

There is no reason Vancouver cannot be like Portland, if not Seattle. Both sides have won and MLS cup and although Portland miss the playoffs from time to time, they are generally in the mix every year. From an outsider's perspective, it seems that Davies was the main reason, maybe the only reason, to pay attention to this team. It was a big mistake not replacing him with a real big name player. They would have had the money to do so. Even if they struggled after replacing Davies with a big player, there would be someone to build around and at the very least someone worth tuning in for. And it wouldn't necessarily have to be a Zlatan or Rooney, but even a Bojan Kirkic would have been a welcome sight in Vancouver. An attacker with some name recognition that can create something from nothing. I am not a Whitecaps fan per se, but it makes me sad they cannot get it together. I really like MDS, but unless they loosen up and spend, they are going to be a meddling side for the foreseeable future and that's a shame. Vancouver is a soccer hot-bed and the game has deep roots in the city. They deserve better.

Good to know both of these guys are at least on the bubble. CPL serving it's purpose thus far. If I were Telfer I would stick around and wait just a bit longer before jumping ship. Had he not been considered at all, I would have bounced if I were him, but clearly he is not too far away. He's in the mix. As for Borges, at his age it's only a matter of time if he keeps playing well. Should definitely feature for Olympic qualifying.

    The Road to Qatar.

If I was someone at Canada Soccer looking at friendly results within CONCACAF and comparing them to the current FIFA rankings so that I could try and maximize our points to get us closer to the top 6, I would be thinking that the group of 3 countries right underneath Curacao and Haiti (Trinidad and Tobago, Antigua and Barbuda, Saint Kitts and Nevis) would be ideal opponents if you don't want to set up a friendly with a country you're also competing with for a top 6 spot. Those 3 countries are just 3, 4, and 5 spots below us in the FIFA rankings so they would be the next best thing. We defeated Trinidad and Tobago 2-0 in the closed door friendly and Saint Kitts and Nevis 1-0 in Nations League Qualifying. Saint Kitts and Nevis just hosted Antigua and Barbuda for 2 matches the last 3 days and defeated them 3-0 and 4-3. They would be ideal opponents, if possible, at some point before June 2020 and would earn us more points than minnows, who we shouldn't be considering anyway. Those 3 countries aren't available for the October or November window unfortunately where we need to have a 2nd match scheduled. Saint Kitts and Nevis and Antigua and Barbuda both have 2 Nations League matches in October and November. Trinidad and Tobago was available for a 2nd match in October until Mexico snapped them up for an early October friendly. Panama and Curacao (currently ranked 7th and 9th in CONCACAF) each only had 1 October match (Nations League), but they have created a 2nd match for themselves by playing a friendly against each other on October 10. The clock is ticking to get a 2nd October match set up, and within our own region, the number of good, comparable teams available are diminishing.

I agree. I also suspect they ended up with so many weekday games because of how many games they promised prior to Fury backing out. If, for whatever reason, we don't see expansion to 8 next season, I suspect they would trim or at least balance the games better between the two seasons (assuming that doesn't change).
