September 2019 Squad - CNL Group Stage

We cannot forget that Milan Borjan is playing regularly, and routinely plays in the Champions League. With respect to Crepeau and Carducci, he is playing at a far higher level.

    2019 Canadian Premier League Attendance

I'll be looking forward for a detailed analysis about the attendance for tonight's game in Honduras.

Really pleased with this squad as a whole, just looking at the Haiti QF Match, the 3 goals were: a huge blunder (short pass-back to the keeper), A foul in the area which was called a penalty (both by Godihno) and the winner had Davies not marking his player. Im so happy that Davies, MAK and even Hutchinson can go back to playing in the centre midfield and on the wing. Our forward group is top 3 in CONCACAF, and our midfield solid and strong as well! With our Goalkeepers very confident in Borjan and Crepeau Our insecurities always lied with our defence and Herdman thought long and hard about this and decided to do something about this. Replacing Adekugbe with Morgan, Sliding Miller to back up LB as he’s been having a good first season with OSC, keeping Cornelius-Henry pair and ZBG/Godihno for Cordova, Laryea at RB. Also Straith and Vitoria is a good assurance A proper back 4 and if we can be clean and organized then we will be winning a lot more matches. It still needs some gelling, re-incorporing (5/8 is new), but certainly a huge improvement. Now if only James could return and we could get Gutierrez and Tomori to commit we’re great all around We out scored 14-6 and it was big mistakes vs Haiti and the Mexico Match has us face the best team in our region and top 20 in the world. Which at times we look on par but the experience was positive despite the loss With Eustaquio coming into the fold next month and our captain Arfield returning too the future looks good. Want to see MAK become more of a protagonist from now on, also want Tesho more involved too. Larin is the 4th best FW and last player of the group, based on current form. If Millar or anyone else start ripping it up in a respectable league cyle’s spot is jeopardized Will Johnson and David Wotherspoon are utility, camp players. But good to have them and fill the absences for now Excited for the Carducci call up, gives the CPL a good look and he’s our 3rd best keeper right now as Leutwiler and Thomas aren’t playing in their clubs. James could have took that spot too. 31, 25 and 22 agewise looks like a good mix. St. Clair and Pantemis also exciting prospects My guess is first leg at home is 5-0 and the second 3-0, we have a solid core of 20 footballers that can help us achieve something at the end of the day - we need results but from top to bottom I’d say we’re on par with Costa Rica, Honduras and Panama in terms of quality I do see it being difficult but not impossible for qualifying for the hex considering that we’re 8th and we need to be top 6 in the rankings. Cuba is lower and USA is a lot higher, also CSA doesn’t like friendlies so there’s that. We might have to do the hunger Games tournament, winner takes 0.25 of a WC spot

I like all the call ups, especially Lareya an Fraser. Too much needless handwringing about Straith: too easy a a whipping boy candidate but clearly provides some maturity and leadership. The guy's worked his ass off to forge a pro career in a competitve environment and knows what it takes to be a pro.

We still should have been playing friendlies to develop as a cohesive unit and bring in different sets of players to test out their full abilities. This still isn't an excuse for one friendly in 18 months. If the CSA's logic was "we're already guarantted the hex so we don't need to play any friendlies" then that was flat out wrong. Friendlies should have been played regardless.

If anything I believe this is the first call in 2 years Larin has earned. He was getting called riding the pine at Beisktas for 2 years, now he's actually consistently starting at a good club level.

Just thinking now, many of these concacaf nations play friendlies in the USA due to the money that can be made from ex-pats. Haiti, Nicaragua...these teams have fan bases in the US..so they are attractive for those trying to make a buck off friendlies. Canada does not offer this. If everyone else is playing in the US to make money, and we are not a money-maker, perhaps this hampers our efforts to schedule friendlies? What do you guys think?

Given how weak our CB depth is, I think a case could be made for Dominic Zator to get the call. He's been one of if not the best CB in CPL and unlike journeymen Straith and Vittoria has the bulk of his career ahead of him not behind.

James is not a world beater either. Let's remember that. I rate him above Straith, but I don't think he's so much better that it's an injustice to include Adam ahead of him. Straith is only 3 years older than James by the way, but he has so much experience that I think we automatically put him in the Hainault/Jakovic category. He is actually closer in age to James/Henry then Hainault/Jakovic.

Why call up a guy like Wotherspoon over Borges or Camargo... Other than that, I like seeing Laryea, Cordova, Adekugbe and Tesho called in

We seem to have concluded the "Murrell is a centre back" experiment and not a moment too soon. And since his suspension we have added Le Bourhis, who clearly IS a centre back. He is left footed so left back would be his natural position but there is no way he was going to displace Arguiñarena. So right back it was. Square peg, round hole. But in a 3-5-2 we have Gutierrez playing right wing back and Murrell has the same problem there that he had with Arguiñarena. I suppose you could put him on the outside in a back three, but Ohin has really been doing a job there and you can't have two midgets in your back three. Which, in a 3-5-2, leaves him battling Galvis for the left wing back position. Seeing Thomas finally dropped for better players leaves me hopeful that Gale is finally learning to play his best team rather than his favourites.

I guess we can't afford to host 1 game in Vancouver? It's pretty ridiculous if we can't find a team that we can host. Whats the discount for playing in the US, and no Canadian fans are there. Over these bs reasons. Schedule them damn friendlies!

In the battle for worst CPL side of the inaugural season HFX may now have the edge on Valour. Valour leads in the fall table (by 5 points) and on goal difference (0 to -11), and combined table (by 3 points) and combined season goal difference (by 7 goals). In the Wanderers' column is their 2 point advantage in the spring season. The only thing keeping me from saying they're clearly the caboose is how comprehensively they beat Valour in the Voyageurs Cup matches.

Honestly he’s not wrong, Belgium got good fast. With a half Canadian league and more teams coming, it means more places and minutes for CDN players. Another team means 1k minutes for a U21 player, the whole limit is similar to the German setup and look at fast and well that worked. Theres actually a lot of good prospects with the MLS teams that we know about but they just aren’t playing, if they had a chance at regular minutes, where would we be ? theres talent that we haven’t yet found and when they get minutes they’ll grow. We just have to give chances so yes this could happen fast.

Has to get MOTM of course but thought he was fighting it all a bit in the 1st half. Louis is turning into the teams player of the year. To my mind anyway. Think the late season additions have helped the cause to be honest, Galan improves everyone around him. Thought Skublak had a hell of a match. Right proper pain in the arse that one.

Good to know both of these guys are at least on the bubble. CPL serving it's purpose thus far. If I were Telfer I would stick around and wait just a bit longer before jumping ship. Had he not been considered at all, I would have bounced if I were him, but clearly he is not too far away. He's in the mix. As for Borges, at his age it's only a matter of time if he keeps playing well. Should definitely feature for Olympic qualifying.

A very good balance roster good to see some deserving faces added ... Liam obviously is disappointed but is honoured and thankful for his appearance up to now but understands he must put his head down and work even harder to get back in the squad. It’s part of the journey the ups and downs of football He was in the wider squad... No denying that Tesho has earned his call up with how he has performed this season. no complaints about the roster

Akindele being recalled is probably why Millar isn't in the team.

Love the roster, only criticism really is Adam Straith. I don’t figure that straith is going to be anything other than a depth guy for camp. Would much rather a Dominic Zator or Luca Gasparotto get that chance. I figure the only reason that Wotherspoon gets called over Tristan Borges is because of Forge’s busy schedule. (Same can probably be said about David Edgar not being considered). also, how are we back to scape goating Piette? I’m seeing people questioning his inclusion, which confuses me unless it’s because of his recent injuries. He’s a bulldog in the middle for Montreal and is still our next best choice DM behind Atiba.

I agree. I also suspect they ended up with so many weekday games because of how many games they promised prior to Fury backing out. If, for whatever reason, we don't see expansion to 8 next season, I suspect they would trim or at least balance the games better between the two seasons (assuming that doesn't change).

    CPL new teams speculation

Fury automatic season ticket renewals are in a few weeks and there has been no indication given that the Fury will be in a league other than the USL Championship. If they were going to be in the CPL, wouldn’t they want to promote that? It’s a shame.

I would rather they spent money on a system that lets you pause live streams or rewind to the start if you come in late. Likewise a system that you don't have to wait a day after the game has finished to rewatch it. I can rarely watch the matches live and when I do it's during the day when I have young kids or family around and being able to stop and start is necessary. The above is a major turn off having to wait and avoid scores. Most of the time I end up caving and watching the highlights if someone didn't spoil the results in the meantime. The highlights are free, why am I paying other than my loyalty to want to support the venture. My repetitive moan aside, the pick up of the Nations League is huge. That is a lot of games. The groundwork is there and the production is good, just in comparison to the DAZN player or any other streaming service the software is a decade behind.

Of course he should. He hasnt shown anything to deserve consistent senior team call ups. Johnson, Akendele, Tiebert, Wotherspoon etc get skipped over. He is capped and thats great but he needs to start showing it on the field. Play well this last bit of the MLS season. Go to the U-23 and dominate. Turn it up a notch like Davies, David and Kaye have been doing and Herdman will get you on the field soon enough.

Wheeler said on the broadcast last night that there were about 100 travelling supporters from Calgary in BC Place. That to me is amazing. Even if it's actually 50 or 25 I'm impressed. With the winning result and that kind of hard core fan support, the by-all-accounts amazing atmosphere at ATCO field, and the winning form, I'm feeling good about the future attendance levels for Cavalry.
