    Expectations exceeded

There's a billion threads dedicated to attendance or Ottawa fury blah blah blah but as far as on the field perfomance goes it's hard not to think this league has delivered and then some. If someone told me before this thing started that they'd beat MLS competition and advance in Concacaf League in the FIRST YEAR I would've been blown away. No matter what happens the rest of the season, my expectations have already been exceeded by the level of play from this newborn league.

I broke my ankle playing hockey earlier in the summer and my wife got me a copy of Malcolm Gladwell's David & Goliath to try to keep from getting too depressed. It talks about how perceived advantages sometimes turn out to be disadvantages, and vice-versa. It's been said before, but I feel like the lack of a professional landscape in Canada has just meant the amateur game is played at a really high level. It's made the transition quite seamless -something we probably should have been able to predict, although the overall play has pleasantly caught me by surprise.

Yea agreed Oxner is 'the man'. Other thoughts: Both teams had their chances. Either could have broken the draw several times. My ole pal Skublack looked like a deer in headlights. Nice to have zoom back the lad can run! Was one of the more entertaining 0-0 draws I have watched. Nice send off for Schaale at the end - he came over to the kitchen and we did a viking clap. He will be missed....... Isnt it awesome we have a league now? lol

    The Importance of Alphonso Davies

We may not be thrilled but there is absolutely nothing wrong with the Phonz being on the bench and learning from some top players this early in his career. If I were a Bayern supporter, I’d consider Perisic as a solid signing.

Boy what a tedious thread. I thought Borges defending and working hard, tactically very precise, pressing high then dropping, in the 2nd half of the game yesterday, was very impressive. He is a rather complete player.

Ignoring the petty stuff that finds it's way into every gd thread in this sub forum... I am beyond thrilled to have this league and a hometown team. I've always been a fan of the sport but never really had a club to get attached to, now that has changed. Despite the location and some ticket price issues, I think Spruce Meadows is a fantastic venue for soccer and I am loving how the city is slowly but surely gaining interest and embracing this team. Up the Cavalry!

You could tell from the first post you were a baseball fan trying to make something fit that simply does not. Nowhere in the world are standings in football set out by % wins, ever. We are smart enough to figure things out and don't need what you are proposing, which is ridiculous: a points table with teams with lower points on top? Please no. I've never seen a league with more than 3 games difference, except MLS of course which is the absolute worse and they do help by putting points per game totals so you can compensate their poor scheduling policy--which having this "****" playoffs, as Ibra says quite rightly, you need to give some emotion to an otherwise meaningless regular season table.

This is so important. I familiarized myself with the CNMNT through FIFA World Cup 2006 the game and was radicalized by the 2007 Gold Cup Semi-Final. I don't care about Canadian soccer if not for video games.

Compared to what they will see in Honduras, what they experienced in Guatemala was very soft, in terms of fans and ambiance. Honduras will be nasty for the refs too. They are going to have to be tough as nails at home and will have to hurt them when they can, because most probably Olimpia are a more talented, deeper team.

To throw just a bit of cold water on this party, let me humbly suggest that the level of officiating in Canada has some catching up to do to catch up with the rather decent standard of play we've seen in most games.

Holy crap, the thread about how happy we are with the way the league is going instantly turns into a self centered, somebody better acknowledge "i was right about everything". News flash, you dont have to make every thread about what you said 3 years ago, and what you imagine other people said. And as for abuse, I dont think it was Aird et al that forced so many posters off this board. I still find it hilarious that you still quote shermanator on here.

Well, make a joke about it if you want. But this is serious stuff. You know it's a slippery slope if these sorts of things don't get addressed early enough. It all probably started back in the day, punting a few empty pop cans down the pavement. No big deal right? Then kicking at the tires of the chained up bicycles outside the convenience. Boys wil be boys! And just look. NOW it's patio furnature. Won't even realise it's happened 'til it's too late. BOOM! You're Eric Cantona. We can only hope and pray it's not too late for Murrell.

The away leg would be a nice spectacle on TSN. Olimpia has a one of the best atmospheres in Concacaf. Maybe a reason why TSN won't show it. Wouldn't want to lend any credibility to the CPL

    2019 Canadian Premier League Attendance

I'm going to go with over, but it'll be close. I think Forge, HFX, and Valour should all be well above 4k average the rest of the way, but I guess if Valour continues to do poorly they could see a drop off. Cavarly's top attendance and average attendance have both gone up over the last 10 weeks, so I'm hoping that means their strong results and spotlight in the Voyageurs Cup is giving them a boost. Pacific, without actually dissecting the numbers I feel like they have been relatively steady, so I'm hoping that continues. Edmonton I hope they can hold steady, even if their numbers are low, I assume it is mostly made up of people that have been with them for the long haul from the NASL days. York 9 we shall see. They could go lower yet, but their games have been more entertaining recently. We'll see if that makes a difference or not. But the fact that the league has averaged over 4k without the home openers gives me hope that the league can average over 4k for the whole season.

Not withstanding the fact that my comments on the absurd suggestion that a 36-44 team league is "small" or "limited" were completely "rational" and came from a position of "emotional detachment", you come across as a massive prick for writing that. Who put you in charge? When did you become the gatekeeper of this discussion? Why do you feel this need to project an air of superiority all the time? Furthermore it's also complete ******** - we're talking about human beings, people who have emotions and are completely irrational all the time. Why might the Fury want to stay in USL? I dunno, maybe because they have emotions and are irrational? Why might the fans want them to stay? Could it be that they have emotions and are irrational? Why do I want them in the CPL? Well you see, as a human, I happen to have these things called emotions and sometimes they make me irrational. You can try to separate emotions from arguments regarding the Fury's decision but (a) you will fail and (b) if you somehow succeed, you will then be considering a fantasy and not the reality.

MLS salary cap in 2018 was actually $4.035 million. That doesn't include a lot of things, like the bottom few players on the roster, and all the DP/TAM/GAM overspending that is allowed. Highest paid team in 2018 was TFC with $26,167,498.69. Lowest paid was Houston with $5,673,471.62. The cap doesn't ensure parity, and it no longer prevents reckless spending. All it does is make teams inefficient with their money, make the roster rules unknowable for fans, and no doubt cause awkward situations where some players are making literally 50+ times more money than some of their teammates.

Yeah, but it is almost better to have low attendance than to have such an obvious comparator as a double header where a ton of people actively leave rather than stay to watch what is then a free pro women's game.
