York9 doesn't fill their stadium if that was a regular league game against an MLS reserve team. USL should be a pretty clear warning that the CPL should not allow reserve teams in.

CPL must have earned some eyeballs tonight. Three good games.

All true. But the CSA has to take some blame here as well. We were all calling for friendlies to be played in each Nations League qualifying window. Add one pre Gold Cup friendly, and that's 20 points. Everyone else in Concacaf was playing friendlies. We sat idle. That's on the CSA. Farce.

    The Road to Qatar.

Not enough people are calling BS here. We finally have a team that could realistically make the Hex (which would in itself be an accomplishment and give us 10 quality games) and CONCACAF pulls this stunt with a Canadian at the helm? Montagliani is either corrupt or stupid. There is a big difference in hoping to qualify from a fair process even if it’s just a 10% chance vs. this joke of a format that gives us a 1-2% chance. And then there’s the complete unfairness of using the FIFA rankings that are calculated based on results from games before the format is laid out... oh and that win against Martinique (who is actually in the Top 100) won’t give you points, and those games you have to play against a Cuba team who somehow makes Nation League A but is ranked 175 in the world will get you at most 3 points each. In the past we’d go on and on about the shady seedlings for the pre-Hex round... this is so many more times unjust!

Didn't see a thread on the World Cup itself. No pressure at all for the kids, we have been drawn as the opponents for the hosts to open the tourney.

I think Concacaf have to kick Guadeloupe, Martinique and French Guiana out of Nations League & Gold Cup if they are going to use this system for WCQ in the future. Would that be unfair on those teams? For sure. But its unfair for any team that plays and beats them if they are kept in given the new ridiculous over-emphasis on FIFA rankings which matches against them do not count towards. I can only think of one team that has had two victories against that trio of teams this year and by a combined score of 8-1, now who would that be.......?

    TFC 2019 Season

WOW....just WOW. Underwhelmed is what Obinna called the last move, underhanded is what I'll call this one. You resign Hamilton, he comes out gets 4 goals in 600min, and you dump him for a guy 3-4 years older and can barely get a start the last 2 years. I hope Hamilton catches fire for the crew and they beat TFC for the last spot in the playoffs.

Finally we can say to the naysayers, there is your proof. WIn or lose these series, the CPL teams can hang with the MLS clubs. It isnt bush league sem-pro, low wage sunday ball. Nobody got humiliated and both MLS teams were lucky not to be down a goal going home. Maybe some of the "snobs" will get off their ass and forgo watching foreign leagues, and we can keep some of this momentum going for the teams that have been struggling to get fans out.

This format is a complete joke. It is completely unfair to announce this type of format today that uses rankings generated on results from 3 years ago. I can see using FIFA rankings to by-pass a preliminary round - but to jump nations directly to the Hex?...give me a break. It also gives the US and Mexico an added advantage that they are likely to not be competing against the best other 4 teams in the region in the Hex. Honduras and Costa Rica are both on downswings, but the FIFA rankings will likely not shift enough to have them drop out of the Top 6.

    2019 Canadian Premier League Attendance

Cavalry made so much money tonight with thos $100 tickets...wow. Lots of casuals, curious and MLS fans went to the games and/or tried Onesoccer. Tonight was the perfect scenario as they saw CPL as a competitive professional leagues and they were impressed by the entertainment and level of play. Tonight was exactly what the league needed

    TFC 2019 Season

Yes, but if they recall Telfer it will only be so that they can trade him for Quincy Amerikwa (or another mediocre US striker who has just 1 goal to his name over the past two years, but he would seemingly fit the bill). Hamilton had 5 goals in 15 games for TFC this year in all competitions, a strike rate of one goal every 3 games. Vanney was saying yesterday that someone in the strike force other than Altidore needed to step up and start scoring. I assumed that was a shot at Boyd. Naturally then the logical move is to trade the guy who scores once every 3 games and has 5 times as many goals than the other two strikers combined. Sigh.

That's not correct. It's far less. I spent my exciting Wednesday night building a spreadsheet model with all of the ranking calculations and scenarios. I'll try and put it in simple terms. I used the July ranking preview from www.football-rankings.info http://www.football-rankings.info/2019/07/fifa-ranking-july-2019-probable-ranking.html For the rest of this year, putting it in the simplest terms possible for Canada starting on 1312 points: - Wins against Cuba get us approximately 3 points each (-12 for a loss) - Wins against the US approximately 11 points each. (-4.5 for a loss) - Friendly wins against teams ranked around 50 in the world get us approximately 6 points (-4 points for a loss) - Friendly wins against teams ranked around 100 in the world get us approximately 4 points. (-6 points for a loss). Imagine where we'd be right now with another 10 to 15 friendly wins from the past few years against cupcakes 100-150 in the world. IT ADDS UP!! You don't have to beat good teams. You just need to beat a lot of bad ones. For El Salvador, if they win all 6 of their Nations league games against Montserrat, Dominican Republic, and St Lucia they'll go from 1341 points to 1358. We really need Montserrat to beat them at least once (-12 points). I think they're the only team in that group that can (Feels weird saying that!).

    The Road to Qatar.

I think this gets approved as the top 4 or 5 teams in the rankings now would clearly support it. Best chance of qualifying for the World Cup ever given to any side in the history of qualifying in any confederation. The 30-42 ranked sides like it as this guarantees them matches and they have no hope of qualifying. The 20-29 ranked sides like it as they have virtually zero hope of qualifying but with some real luck could sneak into the last 8 prolong their World Cup qualifying. The 12-19 like it as they have little chance of qualifying but with a luck of the draw and a few lucky bounces they could even see themselves in the semi finals or even finals of qualifying which would generate lots of interest. It’s those in the 7-12 category that are truly screwed but that’s only about 6 sides. Personally I can’t believe FIFA would approve a qualifying format where 85% of confederation’s sides only chance of qualifying for the World Cup is through a play off with another confederation. That’s just outrageous

Fury Supporter here. Both supporter groups are probably going to be on the north side of the field, though at opposite ends. Bytowne Boys et al are near the entrance to Gate 4, while you guys will probably be in the section by Gate 1. Try not to set the stands on fire in that section like the Inebriatti did during the TFC match last year.

tickets should be cheap, just get people into the damn stadium. once you're in, you will pay for a burger, beer whatever, you'll make money on concessions. not to mention the hats and shirts are really nice, you'll get merchandise sales too. Just get people in the stadium honestly $5-$10 that's it, you'll make money on everything else

This team, Vanney and management deserve all the Sh*t they are going to get. They think Mullins is going to be better than Hamilton? He is better defensively??? Is Chad Barett not available?? Everyone crying for help up front, Poz playing uptop himself while Hamilton rots on the bench and he seems like the only bench guy to score?? This is almost worse than the bad ole days. The sooner we get rid of the american front office the better.

I mentioned the Lynx/National team reunion in the stands, here's a pick of Carl Fletcher, Paul Stalteri and Marco Reda (back to the camera, sunglasses on top of his head). Later on they were joined by Joe Mattachione & Jason Bent (and I also recognized for Lynx coach Peter Pinizotto). A friend of mine said he heard Pozniak was in the building, but I didn't see anyone that seemed to look like him, although I did see a guy that was a dead ringer for ex-Leafs goon Colton Orr but somehow I don't think it was him.

I am actually happy for Hamilton. He was never going to get a fair shot with Vanney. Hopefully he now has an opportunity to show what he's got. Chapman needs to move as well. There have been many times where he should have started over the past 4 weeks and did not. He will stagnate if he stays put.

I was at the game last night and the atmosphere was electric. So good to see soccer starting to take off in this city. Shame we couldn't squeak out the win in the last few minutes. I brought a friend for his first game and he is now hooked. Seemed like there was a lot of people like that in our section. Lots of people buying Cavalry kits as well.

Well, on the bright side, with this format guaranteeing a steady diet of minnows, Jonathan David will be Canada's all-time scorer by age 21.

At CPL's early year one stage, games where the opposition is an established and well know high level pro team will draw more favorably for the lesser known first year CPL clubs more often than not, especially in a competition like the Voyageurs Cup. There won't be any "working more closely" between USA's D1 MLS and Canada's D1 Canadian Premier League and there doesn't need to be, each is and will continue to do their own thing. The American MLS isn't interested in working with the CPL and could care less about Canada's cup competition, they'd only be interested in putting farm/reserve teams in the CPL which would basically be a death blow for Canada's new league, a reason why CPL wants no MLS reserve or affiliate teams in its league, and rightfully so.

It's absolute nonsense which I think was only passed whatever vote was needed by the Concacaf members to agree implement this because it suits the biggest teams in the region plus most of the smaller nations who had no expectations of getting into the World Cup for 2022 but benefit from this because they get to play more games that mean something for a longer period of time. Which just leaves the teams on the bubble of possibly qualifying - such as us - as the ones who get screwed from this. It's not fair, nor equitable and the ridiculous over-emphasis on the FIFA rankings is extremely unjustifiable, as is the timing that this process is being rolled out and the inclusion of matches against non-FIFA matches to harm nations FIFA rankings for those unlucky enough to be drawn in the same group as French Guiana or Martinique in CNLQ and Gold Cup play.

Quick thoughts on the game. It's a shame we conceded on two mistakes and that our best player of the season Ingham made one of the strangest, unnecessary challenges I've ever seen. I just hope all of the neutrals or walk up crowd enjoyed the show and want to come back, if so I think last night was a major success despite blowing the lead (I would have taken 2-2 regardless). Well done Y9!

Wanderers Grounds is usually at or near capacity every game, but last night felt like the grounds held 15,000 as opposed to 6,200. Privateers 1882 reached a whole nother level and the main stand was really into it as well. I've been buzzing since last night. Have to admit I'm falling more in love with this club every day - not good for my stress levels. Too bad about the loss though - the ref left a lot to be desired and I felt like we deserved more. Looking forward to the away day trip though. York Lions and Spruce Meadows looked packed as well and both clubs did CPL proud! What a night for Canadian club soccer!

    Gold Cup 2019

Great... and we thought this years rendition of the Gold Cup was too rigged for the US-Mexico final.. wait until next go around. "Top 2 teams in the region" get a bye to the semi's? Heck maybe top 2 teams get a bye to the final. Either way the idea will be suddenly scrapped for "fairness" reasons as soon as the US drops in rank to #3.

    CPL new teams speculation

We all agree that RAP would be better but both the Highlanders and PFC determined that they could not work around the restrictions imposed by the Harbourcats. IT is not justabout when they actually play, it is about time required to change as the baseball configuration infringes on the soccer pitch. More importantly, scheduling is a huge dance where dates have to be blacked out that are eventually released after the schedule is finalized which may be to late to add to another schedule. The point is MOOT. Westhills is our home for the foreseeable future and by the end of this season we will have one of the best stadiums for soccer in Canada.

No because fighting the 4th place HEX team and the team from AFC/OFC/CONMEBOL would be harder. This format is a ******* disgrace to the principles of football; and the idea of an equal opportunity for the small teams to fight their way to the top. Shame on CONCACAF.

Inter league play is always fun for all the usual reasons and in true cup fashion we're going to see 3rd round actions involving 3 different leagues on 3 very distinctive grounds. Two quirky but charming CPL venues in Wanderer's Grounds and Spruce Meadows and the just straight up arse York Lions Stadium. I LOVE IT. Wednesday evening is such a right off for me.
