    Gold Cup 2019

Next Gold Cup will have VAR. Vic addressed the Mexican media for several minutes. For those who don't speak Spanish, here's a translation: Vic says: "This is a historic day in the history of CONCACAF. Just over 12 years ago here at Soldier Field in Chicago and 10 feet behind where I'm standing now, a robbery was committed by that bast@rd Archundia against the undisputed GOAT Atiba Hutchinson. Had VAR been in place back then, Canada would've won the Gold Cup and conquered the planet in short order"

    Gold Cup 2019

I'm more excited to see if Jonathan David wins the Golden Boot award (making it 2 Golden Boots for Canada in consecutive Gold Cups) than I am to see who actually wins tonight's final. 😃

Nothing good will come out by keeping him. Herdman does not have it and never did.

Lots of our players have looked great for their club teams. They would probably look great for us as well if they had an opportunity to work together and become familiar with one another.

I see him more challenging Osorio than Hucthinson. Eustaquio is more likely to take Hutchinson when he gets healthy again

    Should Herdman be fired ?

I said before the Gold Cup started and after the Trinidad closed door friendly that this team was likely to be real exciting to watch but it’s inexperience would be it’s undoing which is exactly what happened. So frankly Herdman got us to where I thought we would realistically get which was the quarter finals. The team has an abundance of talent but is very young and inexperienced. I see Herdman’s decisions as somewhat questionable but likely more defensible than his previous two successors which were often downright baffling. Therefore I believe he has earned the right to see us through World Cup Qualifying barring a disastrous Nation League outing.

The Value of a Soccer Trophy

Check out the following: FA Cup given top Antiques Roadshow value of more than £1m 28 March 2016 Share this with Facebook Share this with Messenger Share this with Twitter Share this with Email Share Image captionAntiques Roadshow expert Alastair Dickenson spoke to BBC Sport's Gabby Logan about the trophy's history on Sunday's programme The longest-serving FA Cup trophy has been valued at more than £1m on the Antiques Roadshow - making it the BBC show's most valuable item. The cup was presented to winning teams from 1911 until it was replaced in 1992 by a new trophy of the same design. It was valued in an edition of the long-running programme recorded in Harrogate and shown on Sunday evening. The show's previous highest valuation was £1m for a model of Sir Antony Gormley's Angel of the North sculpture. The cup valued by Antiques Roadshow expert Alastair Dickenson at Harrogate's Royal Hall was the third version of the FA Cup to be used. It was made by Bradford firm Fattorini and Sons and - by coincidence - the first team to be presented with it were Bradford City, who beat Newcastle United in the 1911 final, after a replay. Image copyrightGETTY IMAGES Image captionThe trophy was first presented at the 1911 FA Cup final replay between Bradford City and Newcastle at Old Trafford The history of the FA Cup trophies Image copyrightPA Image captionManchester City won the FA Cup - in its second trophy incarnation - in 1904 The original FA Cup trophy, presented at the first final in 1872, was stolen from a Birmingham shoe shop window in 1895 while being displayed when Aston Villa were holders. The second was replaced by the Football Association (FA) after 1909 winners Manchester United made a replica and the FA realised it did not own the copyright. The obsolete cup was given to Lord Kinnaird, who had been president of the FA for more than two decades. It was bought at auction for £478,000 in 2005 by David Gold, then chairman of Birmingham City and now of West Ham United, and presented for permanent display at the National Football Museum, now based in Manchester. The replacement - the trophy featured on the Antiques Roadshow - was used for every final from 1911 until 1991 when it was decided it was too fragile to continue being used. It was succeeded by an exact replica but this was only used for two decades before also being retired because of wear and tear. In 2014 another version was made by the company Thomas Lyte, the FA's silversmiths and official restorers of silverware to Buckingham Palace. Image copyrightPA Image captionThe trophy went through a lot across eight decades in active use - including joining Chelsea's winning team in the bath after the 1970 final Image copyrightPA Image captionThe cup presented to current holders Arsenal at last year's final is the fifth version Image copyrightPA Image captionThe £1m cup was presented to every winning team from 1911 to 1991, including Derby County, the first post-war winners in 1946 Despite its history, Mr Dickenson claimed the trophy's design suggested it had not been created to be a football trophy, and was more likely designed as a "wine or champagne cooler". "Now I may be banned from every football ground in the country for saying this, but I suspect that this may have been an off-the-shelf piece, that it may not be specifically made," he said. "I think that because it has all these grapes and vines on it, it might have been a wine or champagne cooler. "The hardest thing of all about this is putting a value on it. This is, alongside the Wimbledon trophy, the most famous cup in the country. "I think, quite comfortably, this has got to be worth well over £1million [$1.4m] - the highest ever value I have given on Antiques Roadshow." Image copyrightPA Image captionFamous hands to have been on the valuable trophy include those of England legend Bobby Moore, who captained West Ham to FA Cup glory in 1964 If the FA Cup is worth £1,000,000 (GBP), the equivalent of $1,638,780 (CAD), then what would the Grand Challenge Cup of the Nanaimo Football Association - 1891, the equivalent of the British Columbia FA Cup, be worth? 10%? 15? 20? For the one or two on this board who are unfamiliar with the history of the Grand Challenge Cup of the Nanaimo Football Association - 1891, check out the following:

I only saw one inaccurate pass, late in the game. Otherwise, his distribution was stellar. I really liked how he confidently dribbled out of pressure and then would make a forward pass through the lines. There was a lot of Hutchinson in his play last night: torch being passed?

    Should Herdman be fired ?

It's never been fully clear exactly what the problem was with the previous coach. He had closer to the level of experience in the professional game that you would normally expect for someone being appointed to a national team job.

Not enough Alphonso Davies aside. He was good enough for the league when came in as a 15 year old. The next season he could barely get a start even though he was among the top players on the team. It wasn't until last season that, when he was head and shoulders better than anyone else, that he managed to get starts.

On the bright side, at least Herdman should be able to conclude that Levis is not the answer for us defensively at left back when it comes to marking Mexicans. Just watching the highlights and I lost track of the number of goals he seemed to be culpable for

Right now everyone is talking about how good MAK looked last night. He should be going to Europe soon. This is one of reasons why Herdman has no business managing the senior team. Why would you put MAK at LB, why would you put Hutch at CB and use a park the bus tactics vs Mexico when you are an attacking team ! Little Johnny needs to go!

Do we know if Verhoven is staying with the team after the summer? Some of the kids that have been carrying this team are probably making peanuts right now. We're in real trouble when their contracts are up. It's frustrating that a group that seems so willing to invest in the sport can't even sign a full squad due to salary restrictions.

    Should Herdman be fired ?

This thread has included theories; 1) Herdman forced his way into the men's job for a higher salary. He will now make 10 M from the CSA over his tenure. 2) Herdman wanted to coach the men because he knew the talent level and opportunity. 3)& 4) The Vancouver radio broadcasters included interesting theories when they spoke with Alex. Obviously opinionated, but they suggested with the women being ranked ~#5 in world and men ~#80. The CSA simply wanted to keep Herdman in the CSA system and not lose him to another country, especially to a women powerhouse team. Went as far as saying perhaps he coach's the women team again at some point. All very interesting theories. For me Herdman does bring some excellent qualities to the CSA, there is no denying he is a motivator and a very intelligent man. There is no denying Herdman wants to do well and succeed. Realistically I do not think CSA is in the position whatsoever to let him go at this time. With that being said, I'd rather Herdman and the CSA bring in a quality and experienced low key individual that is a tactical genius as an assistant coach. So far, my only true complaint was some of the tactics in the 2nd half, the rest of the complaints are mostly just noise. I'll be honest, I'm in the "not yet" camp, but I 100% get where the "no voters" are coming from, and I do not blame them. Let the CNL countdown begin.

The fact Pacific are starting two younger holding mids at CB over McCurdy certainly says a lot. Looks like a pretty rough injury situation, on top of all of their previous injuries there's no Gonzalez, no Chung and no MacNaughton. The transfer window opens Monday, I assume they'll be looking to bring in some reinforcements quickly.

An article this year in Forbes: As Dwight Jaynes pointed out four years ago after the U.S. women beat Japan to capture the World Cup in Vancouver, there is a big difference in the revenue availableto pay the teams. The Women’s World Cup brought in almost $73 million, of which the players got 13%. The 2010 men’s World Cup in South Africa made almost $4 billion, of which 9% went to the players. https://www.forbes.com/sites/mikeozanian/2019/03/07/world-cup-soccer-pay-disparity-between-men-and-women-is-justified/#12e291d26da4

Differences do not immediately mean it is unfair. I thought, as a % of the total revenue the payout for the women was higher, even though the total is less. Tickets for games in France were $9. I was watching a World Cup game last year in a bar, and the lady at the table was complaining about this. I listed off the last 5 women's games played here and asked her which ones she went to. None of them, because she only watches the French men's team.... well....anecdotal, but poignant.

As long as CanPL continue to keep salaries in check and don't get silly New York Cosmos like ideas about taking on MLS in pecking order terms (it's only Bob Young and the Forge that worry me a bit over that), I don't think there's much chance of the league folding, but if it does I'm sure the Valour could find their way into the USL and cause no end of confusion among Americans on the spelling of their name. Meanwhile in Calgary all that is standing between the Cavalry and their first sellout for the game against the Whitecaps is that there are no tickets left costing less than $89.90. https://www1.ticketmaster.com/canadian-championship-rd3-cavalry-fc-vs-vancouver-whitecaps-fc/event/110056CB74571F86 Will be interesting to see how much of a late rush there is on those. Hopefully they adjust those sections downwards next season.

Not sure where you get that. I’ve watched all of our players and many of the Haitian players live and on broadcasts throughout the years, qualifying and this tournament. It’s an educated opinion - if you have something to contribute please do. Davies, Cavallini, David, Henry etc. - I just can’t see how any reasonable person can say they outmatched us athletically and wore us down in that match. We wore ourselves down mentally and lost our belief. But of course no manager is going to say that because that points right at them. We needed an injection of energy at some point.

https://www.google.ca/amp/s/www.cbc.ca/amp/1.5156319 Herdman said the selection process was tricky, saying he had to deal with injuries (David Edgar and Samuel Adekugbe) while balancing players' needs to be with their clubs during a tournament that takes place outside a FIFA international window. That would explain the absence of James and Cordova. Solidifying their starter status at club level is important at this point. James just got recalled from D2 to his D1 club. Cordova is seeing more minutes now.

    TFC 2019 Season

These are the changes I'd make if I am the GM: Use the TAM money on a new starting left back, not Luca Janson Trade Morrow or Delgado to the Chicago Fire for Raheem Edwards. Make him your right sided winger when you want to play wide and use Shaffelburg on the left. Release Boyd to make room for another striker, someone who can get more than 0 goals in the first half of the calendar year Transfer Bradley to whatever team wants him, let Fraser be the starter with Okello as his deputy. Use the 3rd DP spot to bring back Giovinco on loan since he apparently misses Toronto & TFC, according to the rumour and the fact that he's always here (rather than Italy) during his off season days from Saudi Arabia. If that doesn't work, sign another DP striker
