Gold Cup - June 23rd 2019 - Canada vs Cuba

That is completely incorrect. The Cuban federation have long lobbied for players to be allowed to go abroad to play professionally and have specifically lobbied for Hernandez and other defectors to be allowed to play for the national team (in fact they tested the government by calling him up last November, but he was indeed barred from playing). Quote from Hernandez about what his mom told him after she contacted the federation about the issue: “It’s very sad because we have good players around the world who want to come back and help,” he says. “We don’t need the money, we want to play for free. My mum spoke with the coach and the federation; she told me they don’t know what to do but they are fighting in the hope that one day we can come back and play. She said there are a lot of politicians that don’t really want to support football. Baseball, basketball, boxing, other sports, but not football. I don’t really know what the problem is, but it’s horrible.” https://www.theguardian.com/football/2019/mar/29/onel-hernandez-cuba-carrow-road-norwich-city-championship As @king1010 said, the government began allowing players to play professionally overseas beginning in 2016, and several players on Cuba's GC roster play professionally abroad (five in the Dominican, two in Guatemala and one in Panama). The difference with Hernandez is that while a law established in 2013 allows defectors like him and his family to return to Cuba after eight years, the government still doesn't allow defectors to play for the Cuban national team in any sport. This also technically isn't true anymore. The United States scrapped its policy which automatically gave Cuban defectors asylum in 2017, so in theory Cubans have to seek US residency on the same grounds as any other immigrant. The defection issue still persists however, because as noted earlier the Cuban government doesn't allow defectors to return to Cuba for eight years, so once they travel without government permission they become effectively stateless and the US is obligated to grant them asylum as a result.

    General - CONCACAF Nations League

I like our chances to advance to playoffs. If you look at the stats in WCQ, the US have struggled to win on the road. In 2018 WCQ, they only had 1 win on the road (St.Kitts). They either tied or lost the rest. 2014 WCQ, they won on the road against Antiga (by 1 goal only) and Panama. Hosting all the Gold Cups and friendlies doesn't help them. They've been mediocre on the road consistently for at least 6 + years. They are great at winning at home (minus recently) but not on the road. I even dare say they will struggle in Cuba and I think we have the advantage in Toronto.

Considering how bad TFC II attendance is in USL, the CPL made the right decision. TFC are only looking to protect their little fiefdom.

What a wonderful goal by Terran Campbell, he's becoming one of my favourite players to watch after Borges and of course the Wanderers players. Happy to see Pacific end their slump even if it meant they passed us in the standings.

I also noticed his technically ability and first touch have significantly improved. I can't judge him based on his performance against Mexico because he was isolated for much of the match, and was playing out of position. He is a pure #9 and doesn't have the pace to be on the wings. He is still young and can turn his European career around if he keeps working.

A single game final would have been a much better choice. Incidentally, Winnipeg often gets its first permanent snowfall at the end of October. The extra week makes a difference at that time.

The pregame gathering started a bit slow as I guess the non Voyageurs who joined us apparently have not been adequately trained in the art of drinking from midday onward. Was wondering if my host at the bar had concluded that I did not actually have any friends at all until Sam arrived. With the good weather we relocated from the backroom to the patio and then it started to grow steadily. I think we had at least 60 people there when we headed off to the stadium. Did a 1.5 km march with singing and chanting and the new conscripts joined in enthusiastically. Big shout out to Anton, who I know as one of the Ottawa Fury capos, who brought his infectious enthusiasm as a guest capo for the occasion. People will join in if they get exposed to supporter culture and if you make an effort at outreach. Also much appreciation to Sam who set me up with my ticket and who is the type of Grade A Voyageur that you want to be around when you travel. After the game quite a few Canadians reassembled at Mr. Foggs and my group stayed until we got kicked inside after the patio closed and then got kicked outside when the bar closed for good for the night. I thought it went very well.

I see it as a bit of a mix. I don't think we can afford to send out a B line-up of second stringers in a game where we need a result to advance. I fully expect to win, I would like it to be by a large margin, and I am all about projecting confidence given our squad, but these are the kinds of games where have slipped up. Failure in this one is not an option. I would rest MAK (yellow), Cornelius (banged up) and Hutch (36), but other than that I would field a fairly strong starting 11. Sub key guys off early if we are well out in front and the final result is secured, but I don't want to find ourselves chasing this one. There is enough time before the QF match that I don't see wholesale changes required.

Too bad we couldn't get a goal or two; we definitely had some great chances and controlled most of the play. Same story as the match vs Pacific last week. Actual attendance was better than a midweek game for sure, no question about it, even if the announced was about the same. Seemed a bit sparse down where I was in the lower 300s (about 6-8 to a row of 30) but seemed a lot more packed up towards the top (nearly every seat filled in a few of those). Also looked a lot fuller towards the middle based on the views I had. There were also a lot of tables on the concourse with 4-5 people each, I'd guess about 200 total there or so. About 100 in the suites up top and maybe 150 in the SG + corner suites. Even assuming only 1/3 of seats in the main stands were filled adds 1000 there, giving about 1500 people in attendance as a lower range in my mind, and could've been as high as 2000 IMO. Stadium definitely felt the fullest since the home opener vs Forge, so it's surprising that it's the lowest attendance so far. I wouldn't be shocked if 2101 was the actual number of people who showed up for this one. Photo from the top of the 200/300 stairway. Apart from that bare patch in the middle of the 300s and creeping into the 400s, it looks pretty full down towards the far end. Certainly didn't feel empty from a game-day experience point of view.

Shame about Burnaby. Swangard would be a great CPL stadium. I was just watching some old Whitecaps highlights from Swangard the other day on YouTube. Miss those days.

Stadium looks good, make those "overflow" seats the onesoccer broadcast shows $9 for the rest of the season to help the atmosphere and build the fanbase.
  29. 1 point
Swangard/Burnaby would be too close to the caps immediate vicinity to work, have to have more distance than that but still be in the greater metro area of Vancouver like Surrey/Fraser Valley. The Metro areas of Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal are big enough to support more than one club. MLS may be the USA's top tier league that 3 Canadian teams are in at the moment, but over the years CPL will grow as Canada's Division 1 year by year just as MLS grew over the last 20 plus years. The bridgeview area is being heavily pushed for development and there has been discussion of a stadium there possibly, there's also a couple of others that have been discussed as locations for a popup or permanent stadium. There are groups interested in bringing a CPL club to greater Vancouver and things are happening in the background to make that come about.

Ouch. If the guy who got the red card last game isn’t one of them, that would make six players unavailable to play us

Not sure if posted early, claims of 4 additional Cuba defectors are surfacing. I understand that brings the total to 5. We need the time together and should field our starting eleven

I do hope a suitable loan goes through and Cyle regains his form. When fans, myself included, watch a live game emotion takes over and objectivity goes out the window. I re watched the Mexico game and Larin, mostly as a result of good hold up play, won a lot of fouls and free kicks in the 56 mins he played ..did not count but it was close to double digits. He did a lot of the heavy lifting in what appeared to be a contain tactical objective. The run he made, which I am not convinced was offside, was a beauty and would have sent him in clear early in the game. Difficult to shine offensively when the team was not set up to attack in the first half but Cyle, I believe, did what was asked of him

I would be happy for him to get loaned at that level at this point. Go to a mid to low tier Juliper league club and bang in a ton of goals and get your confidence up. Make it a full season loan. Rack up the goals. Come back to Besiktas with a ton of confidence and teams looking for your services. If you win a role with Besiktas? Great. If you're not in the plan, maybe they finally sell you (perhaps to a team like Standard Liege or Club Brugges) for a profit, now that your stock is up. By the way, I think he trained with one of those teams before he even signed a pro contract with MLS, right?

I remember when Ravshan Irmatov (from Uzbekistan) refereed the second leg CL semi final between Toronto FC and Club America. It was such a well reffed match, miles better than any CONCACAF match I've seen. Irmatov is a fantastic referee generally speaking, but I think him being from outside the region allowed him to approach the match with clearer eyes... but that's extremely speculative.

Yeah there was, but what's the point of sharing it. It definitely wasn't 1000. It was probably over 200, but any 3-digit actual attendance is a jolt to the system. This just popped into the back of my head. I know the club had a MBA, a former OHL player, who was the Manager for marketing. I wanted to see what was happening with him, since I think we all agree the club needs to put far more staff and money into marketing. The guy just left last month after a year on the job. https://ca.linkedin.com/in/parker-van-buskirk-bb657513b

Come on Jono, he is one of our three centre forwards and given that Ferguson is another, we have to use him! I thought he did very well today and fully expect to see more of him despite his age. Wayne Rooney played for Everton at 16!

True we forced an error and capitalized as well. I’m just saying the guys can’t think Mexico is invincible. We scored on them. We had chances. A wise man once said this...

Maximum rotation for this please. Start Larin, Millar, Morgan, Piette, Miller, Johnson, Godinho, even bring Okello on early once we're in the lead. Cuba is really bad and a draw (and likely a loss) gets us through.

Don't think its not working because of the few NASL players they brought back, but more so the coaching staff and the type of game they have the roster trying to play. Their front liners need service, something Laing has proven he can bring to the table.

I know, but Barco is mostly here for his Argentina U20 performances and he has a lot of appearances in Argentina.'s top division and he was already a highly-thoughted prospect when he came to Atlanta. As good as Davies is, I don't know how much stock you can put in on a MLS-developed player since not a lot of them have had success. David has more since he plays in Belgium and we've seen great players coming up from the Belgian League. We just haven't seen some from MLS. (I know about Almiron, but Almiron was not developed in MLS, he was 23 when he came into MLS) (And yes, I call Whitecaps academy MLS)
