I think it says this will be almost exclusively a league for up-and-comers rather than down-and-outers. Our national program will surely benefit in the long run.

Even if some people were taking a generous accounting of attendance (though there is no evidence that is occurring)... Even if some people approach this league with a sense of optimism (though the optimism seems largely warranted)... And even if people are trying to look on the bright side of events (after literally decades of being a soccer backwater)... What is the big friggin deal? Why the incessant need to try and quench the enthusiasm? THAT is the part that galls me.

And while we're at it, the early returns on TFC taking American Griffin Dorsey ahead of Canadian Tajon Buchanan (given their stated needs for wingers, which is what Buchanan is) isn't looking so good

Amen, preach on! I really don’t get the obsession with constant negativity and pessimism! As if it isn’t already hard enough being a Canadian soccer fan, some of us seek to constantly stand in our own damned way.

You are as far removed from objective reality as I am from signing with Bayern Munich. Want to know what I wanted to unfold? I was hoping for a Canadian professional league to come to fruition, coast to coast representation if possible, the majority of the players being Canadian (young if possible but also some returnees from Europe that some on here would be familiar with). I hoped for good crowds but at the same time wasn't really worried about it because I realized this wouldn't be an overnight blockbuster success everywhere...it had to develop organically and differently for each market. Well Holy **** would you look at that...I got everything I wished for. It's like Christmas in June around here. Want to know something else? I'm willing to bet I'm not the only one that feels that way. Now please feel free to **** on that like you do most things on here. You won't change my mind in the least bit, you won't convince me to return my season tickets and you won't dim the passion I have for this league or Canadian soccer in general. The only thing you will accomplish is reminding me to point out what a douchebag you are at every opportunity.

This really holds no water. It's a guess. I would wager Altidore and Bradley would get booed mercilessly. Sure they would know we don't actually hate them, but they'd get good natured booing. ... now if marky delgago makes the squad, that will be actual booing.

    TFC 2019 Season

Now official: https://www.torontofc.ca/post/2019/06/03/toronto-fc-signs-us-international-defender-omar-gonzalez Can't say that I am thrilled about another USMNT player on the team as the last American national team player they signed has been terrible thus far - but at the same time the defense clearly still needed to be upgraded and it's not as though there were a ton of Canadian options out there that would be an upgrade and available starting July. Perhaps we can release Terrence Boyd next month to make up for this.....

Why do you suggest that your speculation is somehow fact. I have been to every Hamilton game and believe me it definitely seems like the 6000 crowd number is on par you are speculating on a picture that was taken right before half as I sit on that side of the stadium and it is definitely more full then that normally during the game, you assume everyone is in their seats at all times which is unrealistic. I am fairly certain Hamilton gets their attendance stats from scanned tickets which in Hamilton's case is mobile only, to suggest otherwise is false unless you can provide some sort of proof of your speculation. Why you comment on a league you obviously wish to fail I have no idea, obviously you are just a troll.

The problem is that he makes so many negative posts about CPL that he seems to be pushing an anti-CPL agenda, presumably so that he can be proven right in saying that a professional football league cannot survive in Canada. When you are so obviously pushing an agenda you lose credibility and rightly so.

Australia also doesn't have to deal with its 3 biggest markets being home to a competing league with deep pockets and a longer history. Ignoring that is silly.

@El Diego @LeoH037 Saying there's a significant drop off between Davies and Millar is like saying there's a significant drop off between Mbappe and Dembele...Technically you are right, but my point is that both are solid options. (Note: I am not saying Davies/Millar are Mbappe/Dembele) In the past, we would typically have one option we could throw out against Mexico (if we were lucky), while the bench option would simply not cut it. Things have now changed. Honestly, I would not hesitate to start Millar against Mexico. If he can play against Celtic and be one of the best players on the park, why not against Mexico? They aren't Brazil, especially not this particular Mexico side. The same goes for Arfield and Johnson. Yes, Arfield is clearly better. It was a stretch to say there's not a significant drop off, admittedly. What I should have said there is that both options can hold their own against this Mexico team. Obviously Johnson is the weaker option, but we won't exactly get embarrassed with him out on the field, right? Remember, he started our last WCQ against Mexico. He's not going to lose us the game out there. My main point in all of this is that I don't think we need to play our strongest line up against Mexico, because we have good enough bench options to allow us to rotate. We need to rotate in the group stage anyways. In the past, we couldn't do this, but now we can, so let's take advantage of our depth in the one group stage game we don't have to win. The knock out rounds are the time to play all of your best players at once.

I think it is a better indication of how much Canadian talent was being wasted over the years by not having any professional opportunity. Those players on Valour may not be up and comers, but they have deserved a shot over the years. The vets have been disappointing, but I was really only expecting De Jong to dominate. Haber has looked okay at times, but he needs lots of service. I just think he is an example of a guy who has clear physical tools, and took advantage of his shot to get abroad, and once he did he was able to stay because he had experience, not necessarily because he was good. That also made him a shoe-in for NT call up consideration as well. That of course is why many Canadians have been overlooked over the years. They don't have experience, and thus don't get a shot. Then they are 21-22-23 or older, which if they trial in Europe or NA, pits them against many younger players, who even if they look better then in training, the team may want to take the youth with "potential." Vicious cycle. It may be too late for the guys in the middle age range (beyond a prospect, but not old) to advance, but for them if they can play 3-4-5 years in the CPL that is still a type of living the dream. Tell me I get even 30-40k to play my favourite sport for 8 months, I am game. As for the younger guys in that u-21/ even u23 range, they will now have a lot of experience and video to be judged on, and hopefully a few more players like MAK can bloom when they are 23/24. Forge, York, Cavalry, Edmonton players (whichever advances in the CC) have a big chance in the CC.

Having done multiple games in Hamilton.... it does not allow you to take much advantage of the Toronto market. Hamilton is a good place to have a game. Stadium and staff are great, it is a good venue. But it is not a good venue because of access to the Toronto market.

As mentioned previously. Vancouver can’t host the Cuba match at BC Place due to conflicts with Rugby. Also doesn’t make sense travel wise. I did the Vancouver-Cuba flight not too long ago and it’s a solid 6 hours. Vancouver May have gotten the Cuba match and Toronto the USA but I think the way it shakes out they’ll flip them. the USA home match is on a Tuesday night so it won’t be an easy match to sell so I can’t see them going outside of Vancouver Toronto for this one.

I like Jackson and think coming to the CPL would be great for him and the league. He has great experience to pass on. I loved him in his Norwich days and thought he was unlucky not to be given more playing time back then. I think people assuming he would be a clinical finisher and scoring goals for fun are likely off base though. Putting aside his age/fitness his goals over the last few seasons 2018/19 6 (32 app) 2017/18 1 (14 app) 2016/17 7 (41 app) 2015/16 2 (29 app) 2014/15 3 (30 app) Those are varying levels too. His best goal tally was in league one (close to comparable to CPL) that said this year in the Scottish premier league he almost bested that at the age of 32.

Didn't we have 17K for French G ? Cuba is bigger draw than French G. Though it would depend largely on time/day. Even Dominica drew 10K in Toronto on I think a Tuesday, and we played them TWICE in less than two years... With that in mind I don't think either senior national team can play in any small stadium, friendly or not. Those days are done, and that is a good thing.

I don't know why some people seemingly obsess about checking Ticketmaster, like it's a sacrificed chicken whose innards are being examined to foretell the future. Let's add up all the blue dots to see how many tickets are left. Suddenly, there are more tickets available. Who knew? It's like they had created an artificial sense of scarcity. Shocking. Some thought in terms of all teams selling out all games, requiring larger stadiums for year two. Others thought failure of the league in year one. The reality was always going to be a difficult slog to get beyond the hard-core Canadian soccer supporter. Getting to the casual supporter, the general sports supporter, etc. Seems to me that any truly negative attendance issues can be traced to management decisions: pricing, marketing, etc. I think all on here thought York 9 would be in tough due to location. Specific to Forge, I'm happy with the attendance of roughly 5500 to 6000 per game so far (ignoring the anomaly of game one). From people I speak to at the games, or see interacting with others, these fans are leaving very happy with the experience. Remember, Forge (and the other CPL teams) are not just competing for sports dollars, but all entertainment dollars such as going to a movie.

Agreed! And as far as I am concerned this league is for the fans just as much as it is for the players! Now Canadian footy fans can get their weekly fix and a regular local matchday experience watching professional football. If they are "up and comers" who I will one day see playing in a bigger league, great! If they are "down and outers" who I have already seen playing in a higher league, great! And ditto for everything inbetween.

Black and gold stripes with either black or gold shorts would be awesome. Although I like most of the CPL shirts individually, I lament that there are no stripes or hoops. And I think you need to decide between hoops or stripes and then stick with it; if QPR appeared in blue and white stripes a la Sheffield Wed, I'd have a heart attack and I wouldn't be the only one!

I have to disagree on Arfield-Johnson, Osorio-Teibert, and Davies-Millar. Those talent levels are noticeably different imo. Cavallini-Larin is weird because Larin could easily be better but he's clearly not due to form. I agree that generally, the difference between our A and B line ups is not as pronounced as it once was.

I thought Fraser looked great last year whenever he played despite 2018 TFC being a shitshow. I can’t see why Delgado keeps getting starts when he has been awful since missing that sitter against Chivas. Fraser and Bradley should be out there together but Vanney never seems to want to try anything new.

Gogarty does look but he’s not better than Gasparotto. Passing accuracy isn’t the best metric for defenders. Gasparotto looks nonplussed under pressure, his tackling is fantastic, his positioning is good, he hasn’t made an obvious mistake in any of the games that I recall.

I agree on the MLS vs Norway Tippeligaen with respect to exposure. But the discussion is between the CPL and a second tier European league. At the point, there is no comparison- that’s because the CPL is barely 5 games into season #1. The Luxembourg top tier might get more attention than the CPL from scouts right now.
  34. 2 points
I just the marketing and media exposure that could be created by the US game in Toronto is too much to pass up. You will have the chance to put the players especially Alphonso on the morning tv circuit, talk radio etc. The story line of Jozy and Michael on their home field facing Canada will create buzz. The CSA is stupid if you don't do this.

    CPL bilingualism

Canada is a bilingual country with French having equal status with English. It is unacceptable that the league's website doesn't fully reflect that reality. What individual teams and broadcasters do is another issue.

It is unlikely any Scottish Premier League Club would offer him a chance. If he gets released by St Mirren, I fear he’s got little chance of sticking on at a better club. His next move may be to come back to Canada or try an English League Two (or equivalent) club.

    Gold Cup 2019

Is there really much of a drop off with our "B" squad? Talent wise the squad is very homogeneous. The real drop off between players is in experience, not talent: Hutchinson-Kaye or Kaye-Hutchinson, you don't gain or lose much talent either way. Hoilett-David or David-Hoilett, I don't think it matters. In other instances, both players have comparable experience AND talent: Arfield-Johnson, Johnson-Arfield Osorio-Teibert, Teibert-Osorio Larin-Cavallini, Cavallini-Larin Davies-Millar, Millar-Davies Not saying these pairs are exactly equal, but there really isn't much of a drop off. Really, there isn't. If we want to play the supposed "B" options against Mexico, I am still confident. It just means we have stronger weapons off the bench.

This. Minor soccer is a series of fiefdoms with busy bodies overseeing their territory who spend their days rule lawyering. One of the greatest days in my soccer administrative life was when my league got rid of the player card requirement and just used drivers licenses to prove your ID. Nothing says fun like having some cranky old lady denying your players card as valid because one guy's face in his photo is slightly off centre from the front. These aren't passports lady!
