I sure hope Larin brings it at the GC because Tesho is red hot right now. Still think he should have made the cut.

^^^ This.....2 kids=2 popcorn, 2 hotdogs, 2 drinks and 2 t-shirts...made my Valour tickets the cheapest part of the day!! More than one way to part Dad from his money. Although having my 4year old telling all his timbit soccer buddies about the game in WPG he went to made it all worthwhile.

I see him as some sort of version of Samuel Piette. It took Piette some time to get used to the MLS style and reduce his number of fouls/ giveaways. I like what I've seen from him. Good ball distribution and consistent improvement is great to see!

    Gold Cup 2019

Valid point. I don't think we are over looking Costa Rica, it has more to do with we won't play a best 11 vs Mexico until the Semi's IF we make it that far. At the same time I don't think Mexico plays their best 11 in group stage either vs us, all teams will have tons of squad rotation in group stage.

I don't think this is how it works. This scenario isn't possible as far as I can tell

    Gold Cup 2019

The only problem with that scenario is that Canada and Mexico, if they finish 1-2 and win in the QF, they play in the SF. The tournament has the scam playoff format that tries to help Mexico and the USA meet in the final regardless of whether they slip up earlier.

Do we not run into mexico in the semis? Everyone was calling the draw bush league because two teams from the same group stay on the same side of the draw. Tourni is set up for a mexico usa final.

I have to disagree on Arfield-Johnson, Osorio-Teibert, and Davies-Millar. Those talent levels are noticeably different imo. Cavallini-Larin is weird because Larin could easily be better but he's clearly not due to form. I agree that generally, the difference between our A and B line ups is not as pronounced as it once was.

    Gold Cup 2019

Is there really much of a drop off with our "B" squad? Talent wise the squad is very homogeneous. The real drop off between players is in experience, not talent: Hutchinson-Kaye or Kaye-Hutchinson, you don't gain or lose much talent either way. Hoilett-David or David-Hoilett, I don't think it matters. In other instances, both players have comparable experience AND talent: Arfield-Johnson, Johnson-Arfield Osorio-Teibert, Teibert-Osorio Larin-Cavallini, Cavallini-Larin Davies-Millar, Millar-Davies Not saying these pairs are exactly equal, but there really isn't much of a drop off. Really, there isn't. If we want to play the supposed "B" options against Mexico, I am still confident. It just means we have stronger weapons off the bench.

Agree that the way the knockout stage is setup is incompetent, but lets worry about getting to the semis before complaining about who are potential opponent would be. I’d be extremely satisfied to make the semis.

Strategic management. Live to fight another day and that day will come in the knockouts. No point stacking your team vs Mexico and risking Martinique or Cuba. Yes we should be able to defeat those teams with our B squad but history has not always been kind to us...Belize?? The test should have been a friendly and I am ok with T&T for now.

    Gold Cup 2019

For the first game we may put out the strongest team we’ve ever put out to cleanly beat Martinique. The game against Mexico 4 days later we may have to put out our B team to rest. Then 4 days later again we will have our A team ready to smash Cuba and get out of the group stage. We keep talking about Mexico in the semi’s but Costa Rica in the Quarters is a really daunting task.

    Gold Cup 2019

3 games , 8 days, altitude , 3000kms. Getting out of group stage , IS & should be #1 priority. 6 points vs Martinique & Cuba. In the big scheme of things, getting a tie or win in the group stage vs a Mexico team that is going on strike and missing tons of it's stars looks cool but that's about it. Beat Mexico in the Semi's, that's what matters. It's literally impossible to play the best 11 all 3 games... also no faith in the younger guys? I actually think regardless who Herdman plays vs Mexico, the younger guys might seize the moment and surprise quite a few... even get us a result in the group stage.

    Gold Cup 2019

This makes alot of sense, as discussed by many on here. 6 points vs Martinique & Cuba and BOOM we advance (in theory). Mexico game has so many variables... The older you are, the harder to get that red blood cell/ rejuvenation/ recovery going from altitude games. Then you add the travel + tight game schedule, kind of rediculous. Surprised Mexicans haven't complained more. I'd rather have guys like Arfield, Hutch, Hoilett rested vs Mexico and fresher for Cuba and QF. If tournament goes as planned we likely play Mexico again anyways. Schedule is lame but at same time the squad rotation forces Herdman to give an opportunity to so many players, that excites me. As much as friendlies are important, the intensity in a major competition is always higher. I'm looking forward to see how some of our depth guys perform when given the opportunity to play.

Durham Region has been floated as a possibility in blogs and podcasts complete with a named lead investor and preferred stadium location, which adds credibility. Suspect the experience with York 9 might cool things a bit on large metro suburban markets such as Durham, Laval and Fraser valley unless more fans start showing up in terms of actual as opposed to announced attendance and Quebec City might become the top expansion target in Quebec for that reason. It's now getting equal billing with Laval from Alex Bunbury. There are groups known to have been potentially interested in St John's and Kitchener/Waterloo, and Saint John also got mentioned on blogs and podcasts after Moosehead became a league sponsor. In total the league has claimed to be in contact with 22 groups and 18 markets, but some of those were probably highly preliminary. Kelowna, Windsor, London, Niagara, Mississauga and Barrie were also mentioned by Paul Beirne in a podcast earlier this year along with the possibility of regional intensification on franchise numbers to boost local rivalries in southern Ontario and Lower Mainland BC. Sherbrooke gets mentioned sometimes as the third possible Quebec market.

On the subject of all the Mexican players skipping the tournament, there is a thinly veiled strike action happening against the Mexican Federation that has been brewing for a while. The players have recently woken up to how much their federation is financially exploiting them. Their players are only paid $2K per game with no win bonus, appearance bonus, or share of image rights. They also spend huge amounts of the international breaks doing unpaid promotional work for the FMF's commercial partners. For a team that generates millions per game filling NFL stadiums for friendlies with tens of millions of TV viewers that is absolutely staggering. CPL General

They are completely different players with completely different attributes and offerings. Herdman said he has a specific role and vision for Okello. I am certainly all over the love in for Borges he has a ton of potential but he has near 6 players in that gold cup squad that have proven they can do what he shows in the CPL at a much higher level for a longer time. I think there are more than two hand full's of players that could state a better case for being included than Noble, not least due to playing time and level. However Okello was the standout in the failed U20 qualifying even if his game to game form was hot and cold I still feel he is a real sleeper and wild card. When he was on, he was the best player on the pitch and unstoppable. If he is motivated and focused he has Height, the physical and explosive attributes in addition to the technical ones Borges has to make an impact in our squad. Someone mentioned before it is a similar situation to MAK, who had a healthy amount of skeptics the first year and a half of his inclusions if not longer. I don't know if Okello is a gamble that will pay off or if he even see minutes but he is a different playing piece for the squad that other teams won't necessarily know anything about. Does Borges give us anything different to Millar, Hoilett, Osorio or Tabla, Wotherspoon that were ommitted? Arguably maybe but I'd just rather he was kept with Forge where he has hit his stride. His time will come.

The tournament groupings were BS and designed to keep Mexico and the US from not crossing sides of the brackets. They really want a huge gate and ratings finals to maximize revenue at the expense of tournament fairness. For us to get to the finals we have to ba top 2 in our group and beat Mexico in the semi finals.

Andy Welsh at least scored a goal and was a real winger. He actually had a half decent career in the English football leagues after leaving Boyd makes me lose hope in the current management regime. I wonder if he will still even be in the game much longer

    CPL new teams speculation

In addition to stadiums potential markets also have to have well vetted ownership groups with sound business plans for their clubs, etc. Stadium alone is not enough, a sound group that checks all the boxes re vetting but plans a 6K popup may end up the better expansion candidate in the end.

I agree with most of what everyone else has said. The only reason that I'd like Tabla to be on the team is that he brings something different from the bench. If we're down a goal with 15-20 minutes left, who are we bringing on? I see Larin and Millar being 2 options, but there isn't much other pure attacking ability coming off the bench ... Tabla could have been useful in that role. Edit: I guess Oso might be coming off the bench ... still, I think my point stands.

No way David doesnt start. He can play centrally. He starts in your formation over Osorio. Also starting are Hoilett and Davies on the wing Cavallini as striker. As per your formation. The switch is for Osorio.

Was at the Caps vs TFC game last night and Liam was the best player on the park for me. He was effortless spreading the ball around and was the lateral connective tissue for Toronto. I haven't watched a lot of TFC this year (actually none) but liked the way he played the position. Send Bradley to some American team.

David can play centrally so he’ll likely start over Osorio. Also rather we start a A lineup against Martinique because they’re probably more likely to upset us then Cuba so we shouldn’t take chances by starting a B lineup.

    Gold Cup 2019

You may be right, but I got the impression from Herdman last night, that he was going to start his A team vs Martinique and rotate for Mexico due to travel, altitude, 3 quick games and save it for the knockout vs Mexico? Although the Mexico game would be a good test to see how good our squad really is, the main goal is to get to the knock outs and perform well thereafter. We need wins in our first and 3rd matches to meet that objective while managing recovery time and playing minutes especially for our key older players such as Atiba Arfield and Hoilett

During last night's TFC /VW game Herdman hinted that he would be focusing on the Martinique game (and presumably Cuba) while rotating for the Mexico game....rather go for it against Mexico in the semi-finals vs pool game...not an exact quote from him but great to hear the confidence about reaching the last 4... He also stated that several players can play multiple positions which gives the team a lot of flexibility.

    Dario Zanatta

I really don’t think we’re selfish enough as fans sometimes. I can certainly understand a player moving to a much higher level to improve their careers or move on to the next level. That helps the national team. Otherwise I would rather see them playing at home. A player like Zanatta would have more influence on the game in Canada by playing in the CPL than he’ll have by playing in D2 Scotland for another season. Surely that’s important too

I am glad to see the coverage, but I still think he kind of toes the company line a little too well. He should also point out how at least a few players in the CPL probably should/deserve to be on that list of 40, but are not because they are unlikely to make the final roster, and it is a bad time to be away from their squads. Okello, Pantemis, and Busti are the three obvious players, who although have a bright future, should not really be on this roster over Chapman from TFC or a few CPL keepers.
