    CPL Stadium Thread

My take on York9’s Stadium it was actually not bad, it’s a very professional looking stadium and a professional feel to it. The whole game day set up is good , the beer and food selection is also very good like the food trucks being there too. Yes I hate the track and the smaller playing field but it’s not as bad as I imagined, I felt I was watching a game in some of the old stadiums back in the day in Europe with the running tracks around the field. Going forward if they can move that east metal stand over the running track and closer to the field and if they can extend the field over the west side of the track closer to the west stands then you will have the stands on both sides closer to the field which will create better more intimate viewing of the game for the fans there. However, in the meantime it’s not as bad as I thought with the way it’s set up now. Now if only York9 can improve their play on the field it will give fans something to cheer about , but unfortunately I hate to say this but I don’t think this will happen until Brennan is gone , from experience I’m guessing that he is one of the reasons for their struggles. Brennan is a great salesman but should stay as far away as possible from the day to day running of this team on the field I’m sorry to say, let Isacco do the coaching and I’ll predict the fortunes on the field will change.

He played quite well. He went the full 90 and played in a few different roles. He was mainly working down the left flank but occasionally switched positions with Jeong and went to the right. Towards the end of the game he was pushed upwards as a striker to utilize his hold-up play as Bayern were defending their lead. He had the hockey assist on the third goal with a nicely weighted ball over the top. What impressed me the most was his work rate given that he was functioning on minimal sleep since he had just gotten back from Berlin with the first team.

To be fair, he did mention Giovinco and he did say he's back from Saudi Arabia so he must have some knowledge on TFC when he knows context like that. It is unfortunate when he mentioned Toronto being back in a major finals for the first time since the Blue Jays in 1992 but I knew what he meant by "major", which is the big four north American pro sports leagues. Even though it would have been nice if he said "Not counting TFC's two cup final appearances," but I'm not going to hold that against him.

I know it's May in Canada and you can expect some cold wet weather but most matches have been plagued by really poor weather, all 3 Forge matches I have been to have been really cold and windy with the last one being wet as well, the forecast was for severe thunderstorms at the York 9 match yesterday and the meteorologists got that one right, it didn't look like the nicest day at Spruce Meadows either! Of course weather is going to influence attendance as the casual fans are less likely to show up in bad weather, I'm interested to see how this will change when/if we actually get some nice game days!

Yeah, my observation is that Hoilett works his ass off defending when necessary. A team like Cardiff doesn't have the luxury of having wingers that attack and then relax waiting for the ball to come to them - and that has been true for his international play as well. I think (if I am remembering correctly) that Junior may have had a somewhat defensively soft game or two for us very early on in his CMNT career, but since then he has done everything we could expect in terms of two-way play.

The one thing I disagree with what Dunfield said is that he said that Osorio is a lock for this team like Arfield. He'sa lock for the 23, but for the XI? I don't think so.

    Gold Cup 2019

Thanks for sharing that. You can't really get the context for those picks without watching that clip. This is Dunfield's starting eleven for the opening match, not his ideal starting line-up, and to be fair he justifies those picks. He cites the recent injuries of Adekugbe and Henry as reasons they may not be match sharp, while rationalizing his choices for Kaye and Hutchinson in a way that makes sense. In midfield, he likes Osorio and Arfield as the quarterbacks who can feed the ball to the attack. I see nothing wrong with that assessment. Piette picks himself really. Up top, Dunfield thinks Cavallini is more suited for the Mexico match. He said David has been playing up top for Gent, but I question his accuracy on that. We have seen the line ups (though I haven't personally watched a Gent match since he sipposedly switched to midfield). He also wasn't accurate on Hoilett (he's scored 3 prem goals this year, not 1). In goal, he seems to think it's a good way to get Crepeau action and reward him. In no way does he think Borjan is number 2. Talks about it as a way to get the transition process underway though.

This is the lineup I want to see. In my opinion this the best 11 we have for each position with the exception Henry for Hainault when fit. I suspect we will see MAK at LB over Adekugbe. Also hard to imagine a lineup without Piette but I'm not sure where you fit him. I can't imagine anyone of those midfielders or strikers being replaced. Rotations will be important during this tournament.

This is true, but it's balanced by some teams being out of it by the end of the season (even with a spring/fall schedule) and convincing casual fans to come out in poor weather for a losing team is a tough ask.

    CPL new teams speculation

I can see a team folding at some point - it happens in pro sports. But I agree with the idea that it won't happen anytime soon. Anyone going in to this expecting every team in every market to knock it out of the park in year 1 is probably not very business savvy. And I assume the owners are well aware of the dynamics of pro sports and went in eyes wide open.

I don't disagree that he works his tail off tracking back but we you have to consider they play a completely different line formation. This is suggesting Hoilett be a wing back with a back 3 while Cardiff plays with a back 4 and who also happens to be a very defensive team, in comparison to Canada which clearly is not. If you play a back 3, its players like Dani Alves, Kyle Walker, Danilo etc. that become those wide men which is why it would make more sense for a guy like ZBG. When Man City plays with a back 3 is it Kyle Walker that plays out wide or is it Raheem Sterling? I don't care how much Hoilett works back. There is a difference in lineup formation and a difference quality of fellow defenders between Cardiff & Canada. I'm as big a fan of Hoilett as anyone on here but that lineup is unrealistic. Not against good competition anyways.

I just got home, and I am beyond livid at York 9 FC. We all want the team to succeed, but what a terrible first impression. I was one of the lucky few who found shelter inside the building and were let back into the stadium before the start of the game. But I too was told by a security guard that the game was cancelled (but I knew better). Also heard from many others told the same thing (felt crappiest for fans who apparently travelled from as far as Montreal and Victoria but ended up leaving). And as Gopher mentions, completely appalling that families and well anyone was sent away from the overhangs. Security could have at least directed people to nearby campus buildings if they felt overhangs were unsafe. There was pretty much no communication throughout the weather. And after all this mess, security had the gall to recheck my ticket, when I walked back to the supporters section. ---- And I forgot to mention, security decided it was a good idea to funnel both Hamilton and York 9 supporters through the same exit. Unsurprisingly, fights broke out. Shame on the fans that fought but the management could've avoided it.

Honestly seems better than I expected. There were only ~200 tickets left in the west stand as of this morning, so I don't think that number could be driven up much higher. Even that 4200 number seems tough to get to. That west stand only holds 3000, maybe 100 in the SG and even assuming 400 with Barton only brings me to 3500. There must be some more seating I'm not aware of.

I'd have had two words for "security" and the second one would have been "off". Only a bona fide police officer could have got me out into the rain.

What could potentially make Canada stand out from Costa Rica right now is guys like Davies and David. They are Canada's match winning attacking talent, the X factors; just as Navas is Costa Rica's, or Bailey is Jamaica's. Canada just has more of it right now, and its players like those that can be the difference between a 0-0 draw or a 1-0 win, and when qualifying to the hex, every point matters.

Agree, you would have to move to Cornelius, James & Henry as back three but Hoilett and Davies would have to drop back and defend much more. Hoilett not the best defensively and we all agree we would rather see Davies attack.

I could be wrong but I don’t think ZBG really belongs in a back 3. He really is an offensive minded fullback, in a 3-5-2 he’s best suited for the wing back role where he has played a couple of times this year with the Impact.

I assure you, and I have posted to support it, that I think that Halifax has the best model so far of any CPL club. Downtown stadium, properly sized, good fan base, enthusiasm in the stands, good product on the field. I also think that of all the teams in the league, the place where a trophy would be most enthusiastically celebrated is Halifax. I just think you should count your lucky stars, I am amazed and jealous but I think you have been a bit fortunate it all fell into place the way it did.

That was a poster from Quebec. In reality they are very close to where highway 400 meets highway 407 and TTC subway stops that serve as an access point for other GTA transit systems. Access by car or mass transit will actually be a lot easier than it is for BMO Field for a lot of people in the wider Toronto area. One of the arguments for this location revolved around ease of access for people who are quite distant from TFC in travel time terms. https://transportation.info.yorku.ca/subway/ The 2007 U-20 World Cup stadium was originally going to be built at York U for future use by the Argos and MLS. The move to BMO Field's location was a last minute thing driven by MLSE after the Argos pulled out and renewed their lease at the Rogers Centre. They are currently in a much better location in access terms than their rumoured preferred York Region stadium location, so if they struggle to fill 3000 seats this season there won't be much of a business case for that type of stadium to be built in Mississauga, York Region or Durham. That will no doubt lead to people with low IQs concluding I want it to fail, so probably best to point out that outlining a possible outcome is not the same as wanting it to happen. I don't get any pleasure out of the feeling of deja vu Gopherbashi's picture provides from being at North York Rockets games.

    CPL new teams speculation

I’d be genuinely surprised if any clubs fold in the first few years. I’m willing to bet that a condition of ownership (by the league) was that owners demonstrate the means and the willingness to see this thing through until a pre-determined benchmark (probably the WC in Canada if I had to guess) to give the league the best possible chance at success. I think that these clubs all have low operating budgets, so just with the MEDIAPRO thing and other sponsorship deals they’d be half way to breaking even. Factor in attendances of anything between 3k-5k and they’ll be breaking even. Anything more than that is probably profit. I’m very optimistic that this league will succeed, and I think they need to grow -but grow slowly and cautiously- ensuring that all future owners also have the means and the willingness to give it a good go for the long term.

Saw this live, seems like a lot of MLS bias. Borjan is still going to be our starter for a while unless someone gets good enough to steal his spot. I doubt it happens for a while, I watched his Champions League games and he was amazing. Cavallini has to be out there. Osorio isn't a starter for us right now and I say that as a biased TFC fan. Too much midfield depth.
  46. 1 point
And just to clarify - I'm not saying that York is going to fold after one cup game. What I'm trying to say is that we should recognise that some teams may fold, and that poor attendance numbers may indicate that certain teams could eventually be headed down that path. So yes - next to no attendance at a midweek, poorly-advertised, poor-weather game against an amateur side is not necessarily a nail in the coffin. But it's not a sign of great health either.

Crepeau is the very clear #2 right now and we don’t have the kind of depth to not call him. If Borjan got hurt we defiantly want our 2nd best keeper ready to go. He’s also the starter at VWC and I can’t imagine him going to play in the gold cut causing him to lose his spot.

    2019 Voyageurs Cup

I'd like to see the teams seeded. For example, here would be what next year's bracket could look like if no teams were to be added next year and you based it off of league standings (PPG at this point) with the assumption that MLS > USL > CPL > PLSQ/L1O (The USL/CPL is based on nothing as of yet, and I would change it based on the outcome of this year's match up) And then another bracket based on if two Quebec teams were to join:

The exhibition game vs the US at BMO was in June 2012 with 15247 in attendance. There was a pretty large contingent of American fans as they even did a march to the stadium. That year all 3 WC qualifiers were at BMO with attendances of 16132 for Honduras, 17586 Panama and 17712 for Cuba. I know that I attended at least 3 of the 4 games. Pretty sure there was a couple of Cuban players that defected prior to the game.
