Great article on MAK in the Athletic. Seems to bit a lot of bitterness there at being released by TFC. But good for him for using whatever he needs to as motivation to keep improving taking steps forward. https://theathletic.com/964445/2019/05/06/

It was a fun evening and a great foundation to build upon for the next games on a cold evening and against a few other events this weekend. Supporters section was on good form and can hopefully recruit and spread for the next games. Thanks to the Bridge City Firm and Pile of Bones for coming up. Couple of SK standouts for me. Chico Farahani looked good and well composed. Nice half time interview where he was asked about them if he had anything to say to the crowd.. Niko Baikas came on the second half and scored a tidy goal and earned himself motm. My MOTM was Ajani Fountaine. A member of the Sask Whitecaps Academy but was arguably the best player on the pitch. Lightning fast, great feet and skill. Intelligent on the ball and didnt stop working the whole game on the wing and tracking back. Very impressed for 18. Fitzroy Christie played a good experienced head at the back and grew with the team in the second half. He was lucky to be on the pitch though after an early nasty crunching tackle that earned him a yellow. Might well have been a straight red if it wasn't a friendly. The Sask team had a rough first half which was probably to be expected. Both feeling out the opponents and themselves. Also a big game for these guys careers with a big crowd. You could see the hesitation to play balls first time and not quite knowing each others positions but also playing a good hungry side in the foothills. They had a much better second half though and were unlucky not to tie up the game. Lots of positives for the coaches and players to take forward. An exciting summer awaits.

    CPL new teams speculation

I know this isn't going to be a closed league and eventually there will be pro-rel, but if we were to be stuck with 16 teams in single-table balanced perpetuity, I would choose Pacific FC, Mainland BCFC, FC Edmonton, Calvary FC, Saskatchewan FC, Valour FC, London FC, Kitchener-Waterloo FC, Forge FC, York 9 FC, Ottawa Fury, FC Laval, FC Quebec, Moncton FC, HFX Wanderers, St. John's FC. That pretty much covers the nation geographically, population-wise, and rivalry-wise.

I admit that I didn't watch the game, but it seems crazy that we would leave top players on the bench when we had the chance to win the game. If the US was dominating possession yet we were 2-0 up on a bit of luck, why not pop in a couple of the best players to try and ensure the win. Or when they came back and it was 2-1 or even at 2-2, why not make the subs in an effort to get the result. If the idea was to basically accept a loss in this game in the hopes of preserving our A team for the next couple of games, it seems like that strategy could have been adjusted when we got 2 quick goals. Like I said, I didn't see it, so this is all just speculation based on what I read in this thread. But it seems like a missed opportunity.

I wouldn't mind Cornelius not making the team. Vancouver plays 4 games during Good Cup. With Henry gone he would slide into his role, which would be a good opportunity for him.

I’m assuming Di Chiara did not play because of the hit he took from Bekker to his head? Is that why he didn’t play? Anyone know? If that is the case and hopefully I’m wrong , and DiChiara sits out because of a concussion then not good at all. Makes the non red card or any card on Bekker even more ridiculous, and the fact that the league did not review it during the week even worse. So DiChiara can’t play but Mr. Bekker played and goes unpunished. The reason I keep harping on this is because as a coach I had one of my players suffer an elbow to the head that kept this player out for the rest of the season and also more importantly kept him a great many days away from his school classes. In this day and age any deliberate hits to the head need to go punished in any league or in any sport!

My synopsis, in no way 100% accurate, but what I’ve gathered; - Fury thought the quality would be too low for what their customers wanted - Fury thought their wages would be too high despite CPL concessions on roster regs - Fury may have had reservations about paying more league entry fees - Fury had concerns about the viability of the league - everyone said they would keep talking but that hasn’t happened, apparently no dialogue since last summer - a bunch of Fury staff and mouth pieces ran their mouth about the CPL The OSEG partners are 3 of the largest developers in eastern Ontario, Jeff Hunt and John Pugh. Hunt runs the sports side of the business with Pugh, a CSA board member, is the head of the Fury. The bulk of the long term revenue for the org will come from the development around the stadium which is why the money guys are in. None have a long standing relationship with the CFL as they all came in with the RedBlacks. The developers and Hunt all seem like reasonable guys, it’s Pugh who seems to have had a few confrontations in the past but who knows what the reasoning is.

They would be EXACTLY THE SAME LENGTH and that would not surprise me! If the only stoppage is for 2 mins at the 10 minute mark, the half will end after exactly 47 mins in both cases! But in my case the match clock will read 45 mins because it will have been stopped for 2 mins. The math is undeniable! Edit: Oh, and in my world, the time of a goal scored in the 45th minute would be "45", not the utterly ludicrous "45+2"!!! 😂 Not to mention that the time of a goal scored in the 11th minute of the match would be "11", not the utterly assinine "13", which makes no sense whatsoever! You might as well record the time of the goal as 7:43pm (assuming a 7:30pm kick off) for all the relevance "13" has to the elapsed playing time when the goal was scored!

^^^the Chelsea chant in response to that would go down like a lead balloon in modern PC times in Canada, but is one of the legendary one liners in terracing chant terms Looks like the turnout exceeded expectations: https://northerntribune.ca/sk-summer-soccer-series-attendance/ ... Joe Belan: “For the first event, we were initially looking to have it at a different venue and start more modestly, targeting it at an audience of twelve hundred to fifteen hundred. Now, we’ve upgraded the facility. It’s a lot more professional. It’s got a lot more amenities and infrastructure. Now our base case target is to get to twenty two, twenty four hundred.” ... Joe Belan is a former teammate of Nick Bontis at UWO in varsity level soccer the CSA vice-president, so hopefully where there is a will there is still a way on getting them into CSA membership in time, if they decide to go for a 2020 launch.

Have to say I'm not happy with service so far. I was lead to believe the games would be on demand but so far it's confusing. Two of the games from yesterday are still not available to view. I can't always watch live. I thought it would be more like the NHL or MLB with games always available.

Already. My not so quick 10. 1st. OneSoccer. I don't know who made the decision NOT to mic the crowd but viewed a little different than my in-house experience. Doug was saying things were quieter in his section than mine. Fair enough but up north in 104 it was fairly lively, as it was either side of us (Supporters section one side driving things but some very good involvment, and initiative, to our left as well). Also, if Mitch Peacock is doing match commentary he probably shouldn't be partnered with Sloane-Seale. Two guys who know what they're watching but dry toast with more dry toast isn't exactly the tastiest feeding of football. Here's hoping they grow into it as the season progresses. Good luck, lads. You're part of what this league is about. 2nd. The ref, Lauziere, needs to show better. A LOT BETTER. It's a tough match to call, players will figure it out as they go along so long as there's some consistancy. So more consistancy, please. Oh yeah, and keep the attitude for when you're ref'ing the amateurs. 3rd. Edmonton's back 4? Very good yesterday. If Soria wasn't MOTM then Temguia was, at least on the Edmonton side of the argument. But job done everyone. 4th. Heavy legs out there for Valour. REALLY began to show as the match got on. I'm a-feard for Wednesday. 5th. Speaking of heavy legs, Hoyle has to maybe economise a little on the running to save the legs for the quality when needed. Not trying to cramp his style, just saying. 6th. Much better from Thomas and Murrell. Much better. 7th. Only two matches in but am really liking the middle belt of Gutierez, Golubar, Beland-Goyette and Sacramento. Attacking wingers and Golubar and Beland-Goyette hinge off each other very well. Golubar really knows this game. Excellent movement defending or attaching and some quality with the ball. To my eye anyway. And Sacramento is doing all he's being asked for plus change. 8th. Don't know who sits in the pocket behind, and in support of the strikers, but yesterday it shouldn't have been Carreiro. Maybe in the future but not now. 9th. Michael Petresso deserves a raise. "I'm not a striker I just play one on Valour FC." Pretty convincing actor no? 10th. When's Musse going to be 100%? Sooner rather than later I hope. Teasing a little there Saturday.

    TFC 2019 Season

Although they're on a current run of 5 goals in a row that have all been scored by Canadians (Hamilton 2, Osorio 2, Chapman 1). Today's 2 goals were probably two of the finest back-to-back goals from a technical skill point of view that I've ever seen from two different Canadian players.

Beautiful goal by Osorio today. 3 goals & 4 assists in 8 games this season for him. Chapman getting some minutes and a goal as well. Glad to see the both Doneil Henry & Jonathan Osorio having great seasons. I'm sure there will still be some to find ways to criticize the two but they'be both been very good this year.

Liam played 81 mins in a hard fought tough 1-0 win for Kilmarnock!! He played like a lion and ran and ran and gave the right back fits. Only thing missing was a goal! Shattered again in the end and was subbed off but really happy with his effort and output. Happy he gave his all Killie now I’m 3rd with a possibility of Europa League!! I’d say that the CPL and one soccer have been doing a good job so far but the highlights are really letting them down. The one soccer site doesn’t have any for the recent matches and the ones they have are edited weirdly and have no commentary. The ones on the CPL YouTube are edited down too short to give any real context to what they showing and are missing too much of the match in general. I know it is very early days so I hope things improve as time goes on. I would also love a weekly match of the day type show that complies the week’s highlights and talking points.

Manjrekar is going to be there. For the 4th center back position I would look at Kamal Miller or you could choose and older player like Straith, Edgar or Vitoria. I guess Montgomery wouldn't be too far off if you could get a couple of starts in the coming weeks. The more I think about it, the more I pray James & Henry can stay healthy for the entire tournament.

So far all matches have started at their announced start times, or in the case of Halifax yesterday, a few minutes early! I know at IGF yesterday fans were still filing in well after kick-off. I think it will take some time for fans, especially casuals, to unlearn the North American way when a 7pm start really means 7:08, and the like, as is common in other sports.

Too bad York didn’t start the way they ended. I get the injuries and all that, but Telfer should never have been started in holding mid. As soon as he moved out wide and they brought on Murofushi, they got into the game.
  42. 1 point
Edmonton defended extremely well, particularly in the second half. They are a very well organized team that look more like rugby players than footballers. Very basic but nevertheless effective football. In the second half it just looked as though Valour had no idea whatsoever how to break them down. Not very encouraging for Valour fans. Another very good performance from Sacramento but Arguiñarena was my MOTM. Had a couple of slip ups after the match was already lost, but other than those he always retained posession and made a number of timely and effective tackles. Better performance from Thomas but in real time I thought he was culpable on Edmonton's winner (the goal that put them ahead to stay is obviously the winner). Hoyle looks just plain tired after two matches. Good thing Valour have lots of depth at CF and didn't sign a bazillion midfielders. Petrasso ran hard as usual but hardly ever shoots. Too much tippy tappy in the opposition box until the opportunity just went begging. Rob Gale has told Valour to be brave in the final third. I don't think that means always choosing to play backwards and retain posession instead of playing a dangerous pass forwards, which might lose you the ball. Almost 10,000 fans in attendance. I'd call that a very good start. Kudos to the small but enthusiastic group of travelling FCE fans! IG Field is very poor for atmosphere because it does not retain noise very well. And it is much too big for Valour. Valour supporters need to ditch the "TFC" chant. 😊 Ditto for Pacific. And as for the "lets go Bombers", I mean "Valour", don't get me started.

Just coming on to say how much I love and appreciate the One Soccer coverage and content of the CPL thus far. If you are on the fence, just go for it. On a personal note, I may unsubscribe from DAZN. It has been great, especially with the non-canadian MLS team coverage, but there are only 24 hours in a day and I can only dedicate so much time to watching soccer. Give me TFC, Vancouver and Montreal coverage on TSN Go (or direct, whatever their streaming service is called) and One Soccer for all things CPL - that is pretty much all this Canadian soccer fan needs...
