It was a fun evening and a great foundation to build upon for the next games on a cold evening and against a few other events this weekend. Supporters section was on good form and can hopefully recruit and spread for the next games. Thanks to the Bridge City Firm and Pile of Bones for coming up. Couple of SK standouts for me. Chico Farahani looked good and well composed. Nice half time interview where he was asked about them if he had anything to say to the crowd.. Niko Baikas came on the second half and scored a tidy goal and earned himself motm. My MOTM was Ajani Fountaine. A member of the Sask Whitecaps Academy but was arguably the best player on the pitch. Lightning fast, great feet and skill. Intelligent on the ball and didnt stop working the whole game on the wing and tracking back. Very impressed for 18. Fitzroy Christie played a good experienced head at the back and grew with the team in the second half. He was lucky to be on the pitch though after an early nasty crunching tackle that earned him a yellow. Might well have been a straight red if it wasn't a friendly. The Sask team had a rough first half which was probably to be expected. Both feeling out the opponents and themselves. Also a big game for these guys careers with a big crowd. You could see the hesitation to play balls first time and not quite knowing each others positions but also playing a good hungry side in the foothills. They had a much better second half though and were unlucky not to tie up the game. Lots of positives for the coaches and players to take forward. An exciting summer awaits.

    CPL new teams speculation

I know this isn't going to be a closed league and eventually there will be pro-rel, but if we were to be stuck with 16 teams in single-table balanced perpetuity, I would choose Pacific FC, Mainland BCFC, FC Edmonton, Calvary FC, Saskatchewan FC, Valour FC, London FC, Kitchener-Waterloo FC, Forge FC, York 9 FC, Ottawa Fury, FC Laval, FC Quebec, Moncton FC, HFX Wanderers, St. John's FC. That pretty much covers the nation geographically, population-wise, and rivalry-wise.

My synopsis, in no way 100% accurate, but what I’ve gathered; - Fury thought the quality would be too low for what their customers wanted - Fury thought their wages would be too high despite CPL concessions on roster regs - Fury may have had reservations about paying more league entry fees - Fury had concerns about the viability of the league - everyone said they would keep talking but that hasn’t happened, apparently no dialogue since last summer - a bunch of Fury staff and mouth pieces ran their mouth about the CPL The OSEG partners are 3 of the largest developers in eastern Ontario, Jeff Hunt and John Pugh. Hunt runs the sports side of the business with Pugh, a CSA board member, is the head of the Fury. The bulk of the long term revenue for the org will come from the development around the stadium which is why the money guys are in. None have a long standing relationship with the CFL as they all came in with the RedBlacks. The developers and Hunt all seem like reasonable guys, it’s Pugh who seems to have had a few confrontations in the past but who knows what the reasoning is.

    TFC 2019 Season

Although they're on a current run of 5 goals in a row that have all been scored by Canadians (Hamilton 2, Osorio 2, Chapman 1). Today's 2 goals were probably two of the finest back-to-back goals from a technical skill point of view that I've ever seen from two different Canadian players.

I don’t want to badmouth the Fury too much. Let’s not poison the well in case they join CPL next season. They would still be a great addition to the league as an 8th team. The Ottawa market is important.

I disagree entirely! There are specific things that are not considered to be part of the match. The ref is supposed to "add on" time for these things only. Timing things is definitely a science, not an art! A few examples: 1. Goal is scored. Clock stops immediately and resumes when play is restarted. Celebrate for as long as you like. No need for the unsightly grabbing of the ball to rush back to the centre circle if you are still losing. 2. Substitution. Clock stops immediately and resumes when play is restarted. No need for the unsightly slow walk off, no need for the ridiculous band aid solution that says players have to leave the pitch at the closest point, and no need for time wasting substitutions. 3. Player is down "injured". Clock stops immediately and is blown in again by the referee, or when play restarts. No need for those fake injuries when you are trying to run down the clock. 4. Taking too long to put the ball into play. Referee calls timeout and the clock resumes when the ball is put back into play. No need for any more of those silly time wasting yellow cards and everybody can see that time wasting no longer works. What have I missed?

I see that Rob Gale banged on about "Fergie time" (or in this case reverse Fergie time) in his post match comments and he is absolutely right: there should have been more than 3 added minutes. And wasn't there a substitution in added time? If it was a MINIMUM of 3 added minutes BEFORE that substitution, then how was it not MORE than 3 added minutes afterwards? And how on earth was it only 3 minutes in the first place? Six substitutions, two goals, a few stoppages for players to be treated, and the usual measure of time wasting. How in this day and age is it possible for the time to be the ref's little secret; and for everyone to know that it is a very arbitrary little secret? Football needs a VISIBLE CLOCK, which is simply stopped when whatever is happening is not part of the match. DUH!

    CPL new teams speculation

Well, if we're all going to jump on the "no" wagon... Nowhere in Northern Ontario? More realistically, I'd be quite pleased with a CPL-2 club in Sudbury & Thunder Bay. If we can earn our way into the top, great. If not, 2nd div will be quite good all things considered.

Not to mention when they play in Concacaf League! There may not be anyone left on the pitch.

But this is a tournament with a lot of games in a short period of time and you know how long it takes a 17 year-old to bounce back after a game. We need to rest them for the final against Mexico. Side note: is there a sarcasm font anywhere?

I’d say that the CPL and one soccer have been doing a good job so far but the highlights are really letting them down. The one soccer site doesn’t have any for the recent matches and the ones they have are edited weirdly and have no commentary. The ones on the CPL YouTube are edited down too short to give any real context to what they showing and are missing too much of the match in general. I know it is very early days so I hope things improve as time goes on. I would also love a weekly match of the day type show that complies the week’s highlights and talking points.

Manjrekar is going to be there. For the 4th center back position I would look at Kamal Miller or you could choose and older player like Straith, Edgar or Vitoria. I guess Montgomery wouldn't be too far off if you could get a couple of starts in the coming weeks. The more I think about it, the more I pray James & Henry can stay healthy for the entire tournament.

So far all matches have started at their announced start times, or in the case of Halifax yesterday, a few minutes early! I know at IGF yesterday fans were still filing in well after kick-off. I think it will take some time for fans, especially casuals, to unlearn the North American way when a 7pm start really means 7:08, and the like, as is common in other sports.

Too bad York didn’t start the way they ended. I get the injuries and all that, but Telfer should never have been started in holding mid. As soon as he moved out wide and they brought on Murofushi, they got into the game.

    2019 Canadian Premier League Attendance

I really was on the fence, but in the end I didn't go to the Cavalry game because the cheapest tickets I could find were $65. I have bought MLS tickets for cheaper than that. Watched from the comfort of my home instead. Kudos to those who went, the place looked fantastic on the broadcast! Haven't seen the numbers, but it looked 70-80% full this afternoon. 960 am radio also had a pre-game and mentioned the results of the game afterwards as well. Nice to see the city embrace it. Still can't believe we have a professinal league. We have arrived!

I was also worried at the start, with the stands empty. But now it is fine, even the main stand is acceptable. I hear the roof is not finished, so that would help a bit. And of course now it's snowing, not to say Calgarians can't handle it, but it is not the most kid-friendly Saturday afternoon. Still would like them to drop prices and fill the place as best they can. Pleased the field is holding up nicely, and the play is a bit chippy, not very refined, not so many player standouts, but still quality and well-competed. Edit: also think the reffing is fine, made an error earlier thinking it would be Gantar, but Fischer is a more solid. York9 is very sloppy and not working as a team today at all.
  44. 1 point
If you want a heart attack on that check out Ticketmaster for Wednesday's game. On the bright side, Halifax have shown that if you price things sensibly good things can happen.

I thought she was spot on, for me a proper, professional reffing job. You could only argue about picky details IMO. Watch Ganter later today and you'll see the difference (I hope not, but most likely).
