Scott Russell and Andi Petrillo will host (I am imagining with guests tba per game) Gareth Wheeler and former Canadian international Terry Dunfield Announcing Nigel Reed with additional content. Thats a solid line up for new viewers and a good mix for everyone else. I was initially disappointed too with just 10 games on TV out of the 20. The more exposure the better and CBC is the best IMO. I do however wonder if this is more of a marketing ploy from One Media - Getting people across platforms and into app territory/streaming only gets viewers more comfortable with making the cross over to the OneSoccer app. While also leaving the door open for CBC or other networks to front up some cash if they want the rights for more. Overall again beyond expectations, so happy!

    Valour FC - Launch / 2019 Pre-Season

Opening game 10,000 sell out starting to look very possible. Other than the Bomber Gouge sections (and the group sales section, where no sales info is available) there look to be only about a couple of hundred seats left. Overall, probably north of 9,000 now (assuming some group sales!).

It’s kind f ironic isn’t it, guys who have been in my opinion unfairly critical of Canadian players now making a living off their backs! Kurt Larson and I had some huge Twitter debates about my perception of him being way too critical and under rating Canadian players, now he’s the media guy for the CPL and doing a good job from what I have seen from him!

Wheeler? He was the MC who shouted me down at the TFC fan forum last Fall when I asked the question about the lack of Canadian starters in their lineup. "Do you want to win or do you want Canadians to play?" is his remark even though the question was directed at Bill Manning and Tim Bezbatchenko. (36 minute mark) http://www.rocketrobinsoccerintoronto.com/reports18/18tfc045.htm I'll now wait for his first faux pas, "There's a pass to Cyrus Rollocks of York 9 FC, he was a TFC REJECT. Now ball to Ryan Telfer, he is ON LOAN from TFC." Wow I guess Wheeler will miss the TFC vs Portland home game if he'll be at the CPL opener.

Also, this is the starting point, not the finish line. If all goes swimmingly there could be an expansion of coverage. OneSoccer might have different ideas of course but it's nice to hope.

I think all mascots should frighten children, like Gritty. Otherwise, total fail.
  23. 2 points
Basically only the two central sections and the alcohol free corner section have significant unsold seats. The section reserved for youth club group sales is the other great mystery. Even the middle sections have started to sell in the last few days. I'd expect a full sellout for the first match based on this.

I like the McCurdy addition. Solid depth. If nothing else a guy who will work his ass off to get any minutes, as this is really just a surprise chance to be a pro. The roster is at 18 (assuming Shun Takano becomes official), but that includes De Jong. So, we definitely need a few more bodies. Our depth is mildly concerning. I think we still need a third keeper around. I like the first two, but just in case it would be nice to know there is someone else around at least. I haven't heard of another one on trial. The backline is one injury away at any position from being in trouble. Midfield/F seem a little better off. I guess it is not any different anywhere else, but it will be curious to see how the depth holds up. I feel injuries/lack of them and how all these random L1O, VISL, etc. guys do filling the gaps between more established pros will ultimately decide the best teams, rather then the top guys.

Isn't competition a huge component of development? Having more local kids receive high level training will only help improve the overall quality on the island, which will in turn help both senior squads. I really don't understand why either club would want to prevent the other from operating development squads. What's the incentive?

Tickets been steadily moving. Bit better than 2 weeks to go so yeah, looking good. For match #1 anyway. Assume that at some point the youth team section will be opened for general sales, maybe end of next week? As mentioned the pickings are getting pretty thin. As importantly, anyone here when the shirts are becoming available? Haven't seen an email yet

  29. 1 point
Shouldn't this concept be considered by other teams and areas who want to test the waters before joining the CanPL??? I could see this happening in New Brunswick, Newfoundland, and Quebec City, where Select teams could be formed to play against high level teams and at the same time gauge fan interest, local talent etc. But where else could this be done?? This topic is now open for debate and discussion.

I am unsure how to interpret this. If people are checking out highlights on youtube (which is how I read it) it may be because they are NOT subscribing to DAZN and still want to see the highlights. That doesn't seem like a glowing endorsement of the subscription business model. And since the highlights don't appear on traditional broadcasters as much (unlike other highlights which repeat endlessly) Youtube is the easiest way to see them for many people. Given that many many people would view other highlights by turning on Sportscentre or some other sports news/highlights show, I don't see how getting comparable viewing numbers for UCL (where, again, YT is the most convenient source in the absence of TV coverage) is a positive sign. And depending how those 30,000 were counted (individual users, or far less users watching a few different game-specific highlight packages?) it may be even more modest. I don't think anyone expected Canadian footy fans to completely forget that UCL existed once it went to paid streaming. It is more that it will stop getting new viewers excited about it because the casual exposure doesn't happen. Am I misinterpreting this?

I would be pretty disappointed with the NSSL if that were the case in Halifax. If the Wanderers started up a youth academy at the u14/u16 levels, I could see there being some animosity from the local clubs if they were simply poaching the best players without buildings partnerships, providing coaching education, etc. Once players age out of the provincial programs, there is a major drop off until AUS basically. This is the age where the majority of players drop out of the game all together. In the last few years there have been as few as 3 actives clubs at the u18 level (1 being from the South Shore). A Wanderers u20 team would virtually have no competition for players and it would incentivize players to continue pursuing a career in the sport. A u20/PDL level team is exactly what the area needs in my opinion without disrupting the system.

Of course, on the other hand this is a start up league that, based on the assumed wage cap of under $1m, will be approximately equivalent to the English "National League" (5th and 6th tier) so perhaps any TV coverage at all will be a fantastic start.

I would think the main perk to having a sparsely populated stadium is the ability to go to the washroom and get a beer at halftime. At TFC games it's often hard to pull that off. Really you have to be close to the aisle to have a chance, or to start your walk down the stairs before the half has actually finished.

Tabla not in the squad for Albacete in a 1-1 draw with Elche. Alba in 2nd place in Segunda. It's unfortunate he has not been able to break into the squad. Don't understand why a club would make a loan move for a player and then not even include him in the squad.

Has there been any mention of USL league 2 teams joining for future tournaments? I wouldn't mind a preliminary round of League 1, PLSQ, and USL League 2 which currently consists of Thunder Bay Chill, WSA Winnipeg, Calgary Foothills, Victoria Highlanders, and TSS FC Rovers. I'm sure we could find another team to add to make it a nice round 8.
