    CPL new teams speculation

OMG, can we stop with the "Canadian self defeating atttitude"? No CPL won't be an 8 team league after a split in half. How many times can CPL say 16 teams THEN we start D2? Can someone find me 1 article or official quote talking about splitting the league in half? yeah I didn't think so Sorry but it would be unbelievably stupid to build up to 16 and then split it in half after all those years. That's a very underwhelming move that would crush the league's momentum. Most importantly, no investors in their right minds would invest in such a risky venture. Pro/Rel is a tough sell as it is and now you're telling them that half of them will be cut... c'mon, let's get back on topic

That would be fantastic if true. If always felt that for this league to get mainstream buy-in it needs to be generally available on TV.

Apparently gk Mario Gerges of Egyptian origins signed a 5 year contract with a team in the first tier of Egypt..played plsq with Longueuil and Dynamo and last year pdl with TSS..in the winter had a trial with Deportivo Guadalajara in Spain https://www.uslleaguetwo.com/roster_players/24327079

    Valour FC - Launch / 2019 Pre-Season

Exactly. Or indeed what level it will be at a month from now, which could be very different. Keep in mind that Valour have only signed 19 players, including only 4 internationals, so surely there are at least a couple more signings to come. Particularly in midfield, where we only have 15 players so far.

    CPL new teams speculation

Yes easily. There could have been 10 teams to start this year but Ottawa went mental and a couple of other bids didn't come together in time. I could see Montreal and/or Quebec and one other team (Saskatoon?) enter for 2020. Ottawa and one other team (Surrey?) could be aboard in 2021. Easily anywhere from 3-5 teams in two years.

Pretty sure a lot of cpl players have the same resume or below. They lack depth in defence. He’s a solid signing at this point. Hopefully they can add Edgar etc after the English leagues are finished

Any team that can put two goals by the USA we should be wary of... we haven’t done that since when? I was discussing with a friend how in 2013 vs Martinique our two best players were Teibert and Johnson and now both are fringe on the MNT despite being at prime ages. Shows how far we’ve come and how crazy it would be to not smack Martinique this time though. We owe them one and they weren’t nearly as good in qualifying as us. This should be similar to our games against FG except hopefully we can keep a clean sheet though.

Defenders seem to be the weakest aspect not just of CMNT but our whole player pool (which maybe explains why Valour FC have signed 15 midfielders, much to the dismay of @dsqpr ). Seems like clubs are having a tough time finding Canadian defenders with solid resumes, which explains a signing like this one. Valour have a pretty solid roster, and almost every CPL analyst has them ranked near the top. Perhaps they just wanted a solid experienced defender to round out the roster.

I would definitely go full "A" squad in the first game and, sadly, I think it might be best to rest several players vs. Mexico. I know that this won't be a popular sentiment, but in the bigger scheme of things the first and third games are way more important ... and we'd realistically lose even with our A squad vs. Mexico.

The level he played at in Sweden appears to have been glorified pub team stuff: https://valourfc.canpl.ca/article/valour-fc-sign-defender-adam-mitter ... In 2011, the defender signed a professional contract with Hibernian FC (Scottish Premier League), completing one season before joining Ange IF (Third Division Sweden) where he was named captain ... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adam_Mitter https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ånge_IF in a village of 3000 people: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ånge and the Phillipines where he was most recently isn't exactly renowned for soccer. To be charitable maybe he's a good fit for the believed to be favoured 3-5-2 in some way, but on paper he definitely doesn't look like someone that should be displacing a Canadian from the roster.

Put the hammer down. Our best lineup can have several variations. Insert Larin for Cavallini, switch out a centre back, start Osorio instead of Hutchinson, etc. Several lineups can still be our A squad, that shows our depth. There’s no reason why we can’t draw México. Even if we finish second, there’s no guarantee Costa Rica win their group, Haiti could and we draw them in the quarters. This year will be exciting with the schedule so far, I just want some friendlies in June and I’ll be on cloud 9!

I think we need to trust a couple of our "backup" players to get a result in one of the group stage games. In my opinion it should be against Martinique. I know they aren't a bad team, but our MLS players should be able to beat them. Assuming our starting midfield is Arfield, Hutch, and Oso, a trio of Piette, Kaye, and Oso or Arfield should be able to beat them. We have enough depth in every position that we could honestly have our top 18 players play 2 games each in the group stage. We should be able to secure second spot with that rotation. We need players fresh for the knockouts. I know that we may not get there, but if we want to be a top team then we need to play like one.

Probably just those 20 games will be available and for people who like what they're seeing they can sign up and pay the subscription plan that one soccer reveals. Since they are broadcasting their own game through media pro and then putting it on CBC they will have lots commercials, features, interviews, etc about CPL on their website or social media for "casual fans" to find out more To see the other 78 league games + Canadian Championship, they will have to pay. But you're showing the audience a piece of the puzzle for free, if Canadians fall in love with it,will be a huge success Great Iniciative ??

I like that that they’ve done away with the embarrassing roster changes after the group stage rule. I like the draw as we’re garaunteed a game against Mexico and likely to get a game against Costa Rica. This will provide a good measuring stick for progress. Between the GC and Nations League our guys will get a run out against all three top teams. If we do well it’ll instill confidence in the new tactics and mental approach, if we get our asses handed to us, we’ll know that for all the talk not much has actually changed, and if we somehow manage to loose to Cuba/Martinique we all gotta start asking some serious questions.

Thing is, it is not that long a drive even. It is less than going to the ferry terminal, which folks do regularly, even if to pick someone up or drop off. It is not that much further coming from Saanich than Victoria even. It means coming down from Duncan or Nanaimo you avoid traffic entering into Victoria. But the walk and bike in will be likely less than a few hundred, local families maybe. And there is really nothing else to do out there apart from the game. I frequently stay at a house in Victoria, when visiting, that sees the lights at RAP, so you can imagine what I'd prefer.

    CPL new teams speculation

Maybe I am still being utopian, but to me the idea of tiering the structure and making the lower tiers regional (and then maybe provincial) offer a very reasonable path to get there. Presumably, a D2 club in this environment would have significantly reduced operating costs. Reduced revenues due to small markets may very well be able to accommodate this. Sure the Charlottetown AnneOfGreenGablesPotatoLobsters may not draw tons and tons of people (or sponsorship dollars), but it may just be enough to float a D2 team with appropriately scaled salaries, a suitably modest "stadium", and fairly local travel costs. Similarly, the player pool demands get lower (in terms of accessing a small pool of really skilled Canadian players) as the natural level gets set. If D2 ends up being close to L1O or its QC sibling, you already have a solid pool of players in place that could help fill the gap - and likely other across the country.

Pro Rel allows all clubs to find their natural level. The pyramid has to be structured so that they can reach their full potential. If that's 1 national division and a bunch of regional leagues then that must be the way forward. If we can do more, do more.

Piette is a pure #6, you sit him in front of your backline. Kaye plays higher up the pitch. Different roles and qualities. I dont see the point in comparing both, really. You definitely need players like Piette breathing down forwards necks. And the kid knows how to use his body.

Like Law 12, the one that outlaws simulation and other unsportsmanlike conduct? Canadian culture, IMO, is built on a foundation of fair play. Faking injuries and diving are antithetical to that general consensus even if a significant minority admires those who cheat in this way.

My 23 man squad: Goalkeepers (3) Milan Borjan Maxime Crepeau, Dayne St. Clair Defenders (8) Sam Adekugbe, Ashtone Morgan, Manjrekar James, Doneil Henry, Derek Cornelius Kamal Miller, Marcus Godihno and Juan Cordova Central Midfielders (6) Scott Arfield, Atiba Hutchinson, Jonathan Osorio, Sam Piette, Mark-Anthony Kaye, and Russell Teibert Wingers (3) - Alphonso Davies, Junior Hoilett, Tesho Akindele Forwards (3) - Lucas Cavallini, Cyle Larin, Jonathan David Notes: Neither Jayson Leutwiler or Simon Thomas are playing so therefore we select a new 3rd goalkeeper. Dayne St Clair seems to be quite the talent with MNUFC, On loan at the newly formed 10 team USL League One. Marco Carducci and Quillan Roberts are the other from runners. Might come from CPL to raise the profile of the league For back up left back, Morgan (technical decision) and Levis (injury) have yet to play any minutes this year which is concerning. Meanwhile Adekugbe is killing it in Norway, perhaps re-evaluate the idea to put MAK there as he can play both LB and CM. extra depth in both positions and that way we don't have to compromise in the centre midfield. Although I fully understand that Morgan/Levis will play games and are reliable options. For CB; James, Henry are our fixed starters. Edgar doesn't deserve another call up imo. English fifth tier is not good enough, maybe for a small Caribbean nation but not Canada. Anyways, what worries me is Cornelius and he's played like crap this season with the whitecaps and Miller who just has 2 GP with Orlando City in MLS play. Best case scenario Kamal puts a string of matches (5-8) from here until the Gold cup then he's our #3 go to guy. Only problem is he has no caps,so better play Friendly or two prior to the tournament. Also There's Adam Straith who could come in as a temporary fix until our CB pool gets better. I believe they're could even be a chance that our 4th CB comes from the CPL, how likely? Idk. Will be interesting to see how Herdman deals with that. For RB - it's quite obvious, Godihno is our undesputed starter as he's played a lot with hearts in the Scottish Premiership. What is unclear is who backs him up? Well ZBG is kinda the first name that comes to mind as he's featured in all of our previous games in CNLQ. Although he still has to prove himself with the impact, he made one appearance off the bench and started another one which he looked good in. But if he doesn't play from here until GC how can we select him? Same thing with Cordova; very capable player but needs to be playing. Richie Laryea could be an alternative. Central midfielders - CDM - Atiba, CM - Arfield, CM - Osorio is my starting trio pair, the back up pair is: CDM - Piette, CM - Teibert, CM - MAK. Johnson, Wotherspoon, chapman playing really well but not enough to overtake this solid group of six. Hutchinson is retiring after the GC and Eustaquio is available for a call up starting this fall in September once he recovers from injury and gets back to Playing with Cruz Azul. Wingers - Davies, Hoilett is the startin pair without a doubt. Akindele has been in really good form, hard to deny that, he's my pick. Edwards started the year off right with a goal with the fire but then got injured, let's see how he does here on out. Tabla and Milar are off my roster, Ballou hasn't been playing at all for Spanish segunda outfit Albacete and Liam only has 6/7 pro games under his name. Still could be a dark horse though but he misses the cut slightly, maybe he can move to a club next season where he is starting every game and scores lots of goals. Also a half year loan has partly to do with it. Pre season with Liverpool can benefit him a lot Forwards - Cavallini, Larin and David Not much to say, they're our best! Ricketts, AJH far behind in level. And if one of them were to get injured, Were in a bad spot. Need more depth in the forward section which our replacements are alright, but the top guys are great * David can also play CAM and slide in the wing position as he has done with his club Gent*
