Just getting back into town after a fantastic weekend in Vancouver. Going to the game live, and meeting many Voyageurs from BC, Alberta and Saskatchewan (in addition to reacquainting with others) really renewed my desire to support the national team in the stands. It's so great to see the great times everyone has with each other in person, in contrast to this site where it feels like negativity rules the world.11 points -

JDG just confuses me at this point. I was beyond happy when he joined the Fury as a player, and thrilled to see him stay on in a management role. But his outright hostility toward the CPL is something I just can't wrap my head around, especially for Captain Canuck here who's the most-capped senior MNT player in Canadian history. You'd think he'd be the CPL's biggest cheerleader. And now he finally *is* starting to say positive things about the league after the all the vitriol he's been spouting for the last six months? I had a lot of respect for this man previously, and I still recognize10 points -
Chiming in here gents. We can't sit back and pretend MLS is bad for Canada. That's an unfair narrative, perhaps because we're all fanboy-ing so hard about the CPL. I'm super stoked to switch much of my soccer investing into a Canadian league, but if MLS didn't exist I would not have this decision to make. CPL is, without a doubt in my mind, the result of MLS' success. Proving that soccer can garner tons of attention in Canada - specifically our 3 biggest markets - is why we are willing to start a league and test smaller teams in smaller markets. Is it fair to say that the MLS teams will m8 points

Fair points but I don't think ppl are praising him the next great one by any means. The guy has barely any media attention anyways, let alone overwhelming love on this board. To say "he's overrated" I disagree though, he's looked solid and comfortable in all his appearances, I think complimenting his performances so far is justified. Agree though, we will see how he looks vs stronger opposition, if of course given the opportunity. In my eyes, he is deserving to be called back, but that's Herdman decision. I was pointing out he's played solid, he's 20 yrs old, and in my eyes is in a s6 points

I like how twitter is functioning as the Montserrat equivalent of the Voyageurs board with no shortage of rampant speculation, conspiracy theories and outrage. Only difference is the posters are the players and FA administrators themselves. They just need a PhillyJawnGuy character to join in and ask the question "when will the US catch up to the greatness of Montserrat?"5 points -

Herdman will address this 1 on 1 with Osorio. He will not pull a Floro. I am sure Oso realizes the quality depth we have at CM and that he has to get with the system or he will be left behind. That's all folks let's move on. We are all CMNT fans first ( I hope) and we want what's best for the team regardless who we support at club level..to do otherwise is high treason.4 points

He'll go back to Barça B after the season, in early June. He just might get to play a few games in the promotion playoff, if they can make it. If they promote, they can play him in 2nd division next season as that would be an acceptable level, and they can't call up their u-19s as readily for the level. If they don't promote, another loan, but starting with a team's pre-season. Eventually, however, since he does not seem to be a legit contender for a Barça first team roster spot, he'll have to go find a pro team and make a career of it. In some ways these first 6 weeks in Albacete, with3 points -
Nothing but hot air? You mean like your opinion? Without the three MLS teams the CanPL would almost certainly NOT have been a viable proposition. The success of those teams in paid spectators, sponsorships and TV ratings showed the business community that there are people out there willing to pay. Will the CanPL overtake (and maybe absorb) them someday? Probably. But we must acknowledge that TFC, Impact and Whitecaps are owed at least some recognition for the survival and recent growth of pro soccer in Canada.3 points

You have to take a look at his father, at his main mentor, and how his brother went. The sense of loyalty is unstable, the way Jonathan could opt for Holland so easily, and they have their backs up most of the time regardless. They are fundamentally mavericks, they do their own thing, i their terms. His dad had an idea you could often hear like "us against the world", and that sort of mentality seems to be what JDG is picking up, a point of antagonism and unreflecting hostility we did not perceive when he was a player.3 points -

There's really no indication that a second Ottawa or Gatineau team is in the works at this point. Suspect where things stand at the moment is that OSEG are not exactly on anybody associated with CanPL's Christmas card list at the moment, so if Eugene Melynk gave them a call to let them know that he's bored with the NHL and is planning to sell the Senators and bulldoze the Canadian Tire Centre, so it can be replaced with a 15,000 capacity SSS, they are highly unlikely to say no to him. CPL teams (well York 9 is for sure) leaving for 10 days in Dominican Republic on Friday April 5th. York 9 will play three games. None of the CPL teams will play each other during that time. Learned all this at the Pub Night in Brampton. I should have a post link up on the York 9 sub board tomorrow night (or Wednesday at the latest) all going well.3 points -
I've been going to TFC games for a long time. He has had a target on his back for years now and I never fully understood it. Many of those naysayers have become silent after last season. However, many are waiting for the first slip up to put him down again. As a TFC fan and Osorio fan I stand with him. I know him and he is incredibly passionate but it is still no excuse to act like that after a substitution. We are becoming deep enough that little things like that may cost him an integral role in the squad. I also don't believe he is one of those players that "must" be in the3 points

Cavallini was MOTM for me. What a beast. David a close runner-up. Such a smart, versatile player. HM to Hoilett who was our most dangerous player in the 1st half (other than Borjan ?). He faded in the 2nd though. Not sure why Teibert was subbed on. The guy has seen little to no action this season. He also lives in Vancouver... why not give a run out to a kid like Millar or even Tabla. Both have higher upside that Teibert and came from halfway across the world. That said, Teibert was fine and again showed he is a very capable sub. Backline is scary = truth. Atiba jumpin3 points -

That's a broad statement to make and you and I don't know what the exact effect of such a thing happening would do to the fanbase. Would a portion of fans disappear if it's not MLS? Sure, maybe. Anyhow, I don't see the issue with having 3 MLS teams along with the CPL. Any talks of them joining up is a conversation best had 15-20 years down the road when the soccer landscape in this country evolves and fleshes out even further.2 points

I'm sure it's already been said but isn't it almost incredible to think that we were all over the moon when we managed to convince the likes of Aird, Tesho, Vittoria (and others) to join the fold and that just a short amount of time later none of them realistically have any chance of starting, maybe not even being called into a 23-man squad?2 points
-
I mostly disagree, it was maybe a good decision not to start him on the plastic pitch with him recovering from knee surgery, he has however improved greatly in the Hearts back line as he works his way back to full fitness, he would not be starting if he was as bad as you say! If he stays healthy and continues to progress I expect to see him getting a chance to start for Canada, ZBG played fairly well there though!2 points

Herdman new head coach
Ivanovski94 and one other reacted to BenFisk'sBiggestFan for a topic
Maybe that's exactly why Herdman has shortened that list? Because he is trying to at least increase familiarity of the young ones and develop them for the future. Because we are weak in that position he is trying to focus only on 4-5 players in that position so that they get all the help they can get. In theory, it makes sense.2 points -
I'll hype him a bit more and say he has a decent chance of making the England squad someday. He put in a MOTM performance in his last match with the u21s and derby fans seems to like him a lot, as in "best young defender in Europe" a lot. https://talksport.com/football/fa-cup/476021/fans-chelsea-fikayo-tomori-derby-county-southampton/ He may not displace John Stones or Joe Gomez but it's easy to be in the conversation with the James Tarkowski, Michael Keane and the Lewis Dunk's of the player pool. Their CB pool isn't that great actually. Next season will be important for his dev2 points

We're currently watching Canada's most talented squad in decades, and 13 of the players on the team against French Guiana either play for or got training from MLS teams. That's not a coincidence. There's a place for the CPL, as it provides both additional spots for Canadian players to develop and continues to expand the fan base for Canadian soccer fans. But there's lots of fans in the big markets that follow MLS and won't bother to follow CPL, and if the MLS teams dropped down to CPL they just wouldn't follow them.2 points

We don’t have a lack of CB depth, we have a lack of quality. Cornelius, Henry, James, Edgar, Jakovic, Vitoria, Hainault, Straith, Miller, Attakora, Ouimette is pretty deep depth there are just no stand outs. We could have injuries to about 5-6 central defenders without experiencing a real drop in quality. This makes starting and playing Cornelius every minute all the more questionable. When we had James, Henry and Cornelius available in March it was Doneil who sat.2 points

There is a difference between being fiery and fierce for the team and being fiery and fierce because you are selfish. Maybe this is Herdman's first challenge as far as dealing with attitudes and personalities on the team. The question is how much of this is a momentary reaction and how much is it indicative of general attitude and what effect is it having on the team. When Osorio did this when Floro subbed him out while he was having a poor game, Floro did what most coaches would probably do (and for the most part are correct in doing) and stopped playing him even though we did not have enough2 points -
This is a chicken & egg response. The success of the MLS in Canada largely set up the what appears to be early success of the CPL and encouraged investors to support Canadian soccer.2 points

Agreed, honestly the playing time will come this yr. Yes, he's behind Sagna, but Sagna is 35+ and I don't see Sagna playing 90 mins every game this season, especially with the travel, scheduling and games on turf over an entire MLS season. Let's remember he's now the understudy of French speaking Sagna who is arguably a top 5 RB all time for France. Pretty amazing development experience for a 20 yr old. As mentioned above Lyon takes it's player development very serious, top 3 clubs in world. This only helps us. Also, what's annoying is when ppl on here keep saying "French 4th t2 points

I have but I really hope you keep posting here, you are without a doubt the favourite here! Everyone posting just has yours and Liam's back here - that's all. There may be eyes on here that don't. He may be a consistent starter, play hard and be hard on himself but if he has an attitude he has an attitude. These things aren't mutually exclusive. His body language was horrible on the sub in a game we were up 4-1. People are alleging he walked down the tunnel and had a tantrum until someone from the staff went and got him to sit back on the bench. Then I read comments say2 points -

Regarding Osorio, let's not start with the attitude problem BS on here again. He's been a consistent starter for JH every game, for a year now, JH likes him and plays him bc Oso is a professional in every sense. Osorio plays hard every single time and wants to be a difference maker. Osorio is just extremely hard on himself because he wants to do well so badly. That's it. Read nothing more into his reaction to the sub. It happens in Toronto from time to time. No big deal.2 points -
So let's walk through this. Floro was terrible. We all know that. In the 2015 Gold Cup his team... Lost to Jamaica Tied Costa Rica Tied El Salvador Then under Zambrano, who we all know was amazing, in the 2017 Gold Cup his team... Lost to Jamaica Tied Costa Rica Tied Honduras And beat French Guiana 4-2 So clearly the difference between Floro (who is terrible) and Zambrano (who is a godsend) is that tying Honduras is better than tying El Salvador, plus he had that awesome 4-2 win against French Guiana. And of course, under John Herdman, who is the worst of all2 points
