  1. My favourite memory from tonight’s match was while watching it with my 5 year old son and he turned to me and said “I want to be a Canada player!” We sang Oh Canada together. Celebrated the goals together. And dreamed of him suiting up for Canada together in the future. This is why playing matches and having them televised is important. *ironically all done while wearing the Northern Ireland top my wife put him in earlier today to wind me up. Haha so proud.

  2. Regarding Osorio, let's not start with the attitude problem BS on here again. He's been a consistent starter for JH every game, for a year now, JH likes him and plays him bc Oso is a professional in every sense. Osorio plays hard every single time and wants to be a difference maker. Osorio is just extremely hard on himself because he wants to do well so badly. That's it. Read nothing more into his reaction to the sub. It happens in Toronto from time to time. No big deal.

I thought he was an absolute revelation today. Hardly put a foot in wrong, and he had a lot to deal with on his side, often in tight quarters. He was quite good going forward as well. Very impressive overall.

  4. Similar experience with my six and nine-year-olds today in the stadium. To brush by Davies and Borjan, to watch a lot of fun and creative soccer on display, to celebrate NUMEROUS goals in their home city was just amazing. And then, at the very end in another moment of brilliance from Zach, he calls Atiba, the last man left on the pitch, to come and address the fans. He hopped the rail, and sat down with us, leading cheers with the megaphone, giving hi-fives to the kids, thanking people very genuinely...all with us (my boys and I and a couple hundred of our closest friends) crouched down like kids waiting to hear from Santa. I've had some pretty incredible experiences as a fan of soccer in this country, from legendary match days, training briefly as a coach under Tony Waiters, to having Carl Valentine as a guest in my own classroom, to having the Caps open their locker-room to allow my students to interview them....but this was something different, something to be treasured. Feeling pretty grateful for everything this weekend as a proud V. https://mobile.twitter.com/UncleDall/status/1109973289646972928

  5. I and I think most others here would be disappointed if you stopped posting here. On the other hand we have had other family members of players post from time to time and as a family member one needs to be careful not to post too much information about things or to post opinions that could hurt the player. Some family members have been better about that than others. Also family members are usually very biased in their opinions which is understandable but again not always helpful to the player. As much as we love to have as much inside information and opinion as possible sometimes it is best not to post those things in public. I hope you will keep posting here and your posts are much appreciated but maybe it is better not to post in the heat of the moment and to think carefully about what you post beforehand to avoid posting information or opinions that should be kept private.

  7. Hear, hear. +1 Appreciate your updates, Spitfire, and in my experience you’ve been 99% bang on for appropriateness given your situation. Dads gonna be dads and we all slip up once in a while. Don’t let it dissuade you from being part of a group that wants only the best for Liam and the best for the MNT.

  8. Kaye, Hoilett and David were all great tonight I thought. Hutchinson was very average tonight. Cornelius needs to be replaced on the backline before we get into serious matches. The naive plays out of the back came from everyone but particularly infuriating was when Henry decided to do a scoop pass in our box AFTER we had just conceded a goal messing around. I think Henry is our best defender but he is just so idiotic at times it makes you wonder if it's even worth it. What was with Osorio's little hissy fit on being subbed? Although I didn't agree with Teibert coming in, I didn't like that. As for Teibert. A) Why is he even in the squad? B ) He hasn't even made the Vancouver bench but gets 30 minutes while others sit on the bench? That's absurd. We could and SHOULD have scored more goals in the second half. Seriously we were completely weak, they were literally handing us chance after chance and we couldn't make it happen. Everyone was guilty of sloppy play in the final third, even the aforementioned top players.

  9. Really annoyed Liam Millar didn’t get on. For those who were watching on tv and might not have seen it he was warming up for about 10 minutes by him self before they told Larin to warm up for a couple minutes and then sent him on. There was no reason for Larin to come on as he is slow and has horrible footwork, while on the other hand Millar is quick energetic and has shown to have great footwork and he creates chances. Larin is great for when we are down a goal and are throwing balls into the box but in a game like today where it was very open and both team playing quick it would have been a perfect time for Millar to shine. Overall though it was a fun game standing with y’all and I have to say Kaye was my MOTM.

  11. A team can never be about one player, and a coach can never put an individual's considerations over the teams. You of course understand that 100%. A coach has a lot of interests before him, the group dynamic, and things he has to prioritise--but hey, Liam probably learnt all that when he was 15. I am sure you know well enough that making statements like the above, which suggest Liam could have a similar frustration, is not benefitial to him. He has an agent, he speaks to the coaching staff and to Herdman, he has to deal with it all that way, never airing in public. I understand this is very hard, being personally frustrated. Plenty of other fans will express similar ideas to you, but we are free to. You are really not, at least should just take a breather and count to about 10 minutes before posting, just so it does not reflect on Liam and his professionalism. Sorry if this is a bit harsh, but we all want the best for him and are thrilled for him, so airing grievances should always be done in the 1 to 1 with Herdman and his assistants.

    Herdman new head coach

So let's walk through this. Floro was terrible. We all know that. In the 2015 Gold Cup his team... Lost to Jamaica Tied Costa Rica Tied El Salvador Then under Zambrano, who we all know was amazing, in the 2017 Gold Cup his team... Lost to Jamaica Tied Costa Rica Tied Honduras And beat French Guiana 4-2 So clearly the difference between Floro (who is terrible) and Zambrano (who is a godsend) is that tying Honduras is better than tying El Salvador, plus he had that awesome 4-2 win against French Guiana. And of course, under John Herdman, who is the worst of all (because of emails that nobody has read and a slide from a presentation that nobody saw, and a prediction that we don't know if it's right or wrong yet, and don't even get me started on friendlies) Canada just beat French Guiana 4-1, so better than the Zambrano result. But he still doesn't have that Honduras tie yet. So he should probably be fired. Amirite?

Does anyone know much about the Belgian league? He must have a good shot at winning the Belgian Young Player of the Season award. It's been won by players like Youri Tielemans, Leon Bailey and Vincent Kompany in past years. The end of the season will be a big test for him because the way the league is set up he will be playing fixtures against the top teams and competing for continental spots the rest of the season and in between that he'll have the Belgian Cup final on May 1. If he plays well through this set of matches it will say a lot about his level. He seems to really love playing for Canada saying in one of his interviews that coming on international breaks is like going on vacation because he gets to play with his best friends.

  16. I think some are piling on Piette due to his part played in the goal conceded, I agree with Spurs besides the balls up for their goal I thought he played well, he did rush some passes, in some cases I don't blame him as the opposition were getting away with some very aggressive physical play, he made some nice defensive break ups and started our attack with nice accurate passes!

  18. Please don't go, Spitfire! I don't envy you this challenge, but as dads still figuring out this parenting thing I think we need to remember there is no parenting manual that applies to all situations, so we have to forgive ourselves if we don't always get things 100% right. As my dad used to tell me: keep your pecker up, son! This was but one game on your journey.

I wouldn’t be opposed to him spending another year in Belgium... but a move to a mid level Bundesliga team is not a bad thing.

  20. I don't think anyone is ragging on his game, it's just his general selection and playing time. We can only play 14 guys - for me personally I would not be giving minutes to Teibert as one of my 14 especially when he hasn't played a minute this season. Fair play to him he was decent and also put in a nice cross vs. St. Kitts - I'd just rather see Tabla, Millar or someone else because you know what you're getting with Teibert and it's nothing special. Even a debut for Liam Fraser, I rate him and the poor kid has been in 3 or 4 camps now with no cap.

  21. I'm not understanding the hate for Piette's game tonight. I thought he was his usual self, destroyed in midfield and made a few really class long range passes. The back pass to Milan was dumb but I thought others also shared the blame in that play. If I'm Bradley watching MAK I might explore using him there for LAFC. It's a shame he was never tested defensively because I want to see if he can be our starting LB. He looked more like Hutch than Hutch himself tonight.

  23. I think we're being a bit harsh on Rusty. (Just got back from the game.) He was solid in possession, had a couple of very effective passes going forward, and was tidy in defence and positioning. He is not a game-changer, no, but he isn't SO far off other guys in the squad (and he has a much better attitude than Osorio). I though Osorio was okay. As guys like David and MAK develop, and when Arfield is back, it is hard to see how a guy like Osorio will see much of the field. JGB had a solid game. And he is still just a kid. David was great and can still get better. Would have liked to see Kaye in the middle the entire game, but was happy to see Hutch one more time. But, yeah, this team needs more games together. Really wish Millar had been subbed on! We are making real strides forward. We're still a long ways from being able to get results against the US and Mexico, but I feel that we are getting really close to Honduras and Costa Rica (and Panama?) Strong turnout, great crowd, solid performance--one brain fart away from a complete game. One note: Arfield's importance to this team will only become that more apparent as Hutch steps down. We need a clear leader, and Scotty is the right guy for the job. (I respect Hoillet, but he farts around too much sometimes, and we need a captain who can talk to a guy like that AND get the most out of him.)

  24. My thoughts on the game: Piette sucked, hopefully hes not starting if Arfield is healthy. David is amazing, cant wait to see where he ends up next. I thought Henry was solid but they really need James at CB. Cavalinni is way ahead of Larin now. Larin needs to move to a club here he can actually play. Hoilet was really solid. Osorio was very good. I am guessing Godinho didn’t play because of the turf? Turf sucks for soccer a few guys slipped. Teibert shouldn’t be on the field over Miller or Tabla.

Best feeling ever being in that stadium with over 30000 Canadian soccer fans TFC winning the MLS Cup my friend, shit on the MLS all you want but that night in that stadium made being a soccer fan in Canada for all of my 54 years on this earth worth it . Yes in Toronto Canada ‘s biggest city and the media center of Canada soccer that night was all that mattered in this city, winning the fucken McDonalds of pro soccer I’ll take that any day!!

From a Canadian soccer perspective we need to be rooting for Dortmund to get him. The storyline between him and Davies would just be too good. David v Davies, the battle of the 2000s, the 2 solitudes, BVB v Bayern. Could be like a friendlier version of the Malkin v Ovechkin rivalry.

  27. I have but I really hope you keep posting here, you are without a doubt the favourite here! Everyone posting just has yours and Liam's back here - that's all. There may be eyes on here that don't. He may be a consistent starter, play hard and be hard on himself but if he has an attitude he has an attitude. These things aren't mutually exclusive. His body language was horrible on the sub in a game we were up 4-1. People are alleging he walked down the tunnel and had a tantrum until someone from the staff went and got him to sit back on the bench. Then I read comments saying he wasn't celebrating with the squad after the victory. To me that isn't cool. Throwing a tantrum when your team is WINNING 4-1 is toxic. It helps no one. If those allegations are true, let's call it like it is. He's not Cristiano Ronaldo.

  29. All that matters now is that he gets some real playing time in Montreal.he is a dynamic player. I was watching at a pub and the tv was a little far away, several times I thought the nice play was from David only to realize after that it was ZBG.

  30. Difficult spot though, eh. I hear you, but at the same time several guys traveled long distances and are battling for first team football. Larin included. I know it's frustrating, but these things happen. Liam will get his shot. And to be honest the time spent with the boys in camp and training are all more valuable than a ten minute stretch in a match that's already 4-1.

  31. Just got back from the game. Lucas Cavallini best player on the pitch. Absolute beast. Hoilett dangerous always. David looked great. Hutch solid but showing his age Jonathan Osorio needs to fix his face. Good player but he was subbed right in front of me. Made a big stink and then went straight to the locker room. Dude by that point we were having a laugh anyhow. I wont turn it in to a Osorio v Teibert discussion because its irrelevant. Osorio needs to check the attitude

  32. I think your frustration would be alleviated if we simply played TWO match windows. Seriously, we should be playing in a couple days again and then we could have Liam play a full 90. Limited to three subs in a one match window you're obviously left with frustrated players inevitably. As for the dilemma between club and country the simple fact of the matter is this: both are extreme honours and in both cases he's going to have to fight to get playing time. The thing I'd caution is that your national team is forever and a club team isn't (necessarily). The margins for future Canadian squads are going to be extremely tight in (possibly) 2022 and 2026 along with whatever other future tournaments we're in. Hopefully Liam can kick on and earn some starts to finish this season strong.

  33. Can you elaborate? He's been fantastic for Canada recently. Collaborated great with MAK ? and Atiba on his goal. Assist on another goal. Personally I want him and Davies out wide and David playing behind Cavallini. Bring on Osorio as a sub if you need some more creativity.

  34. The game for me reinforces the need to play friendlies and other matches against higher quality opponents. The win is great, fine and dandy but too often we moved the ball to slowly and casually because we knew we could afford to do so. We need to move the ball quicker and make some sharper decisions against teams that are better than this FG team (who were missing a bunch of players from their Gold Cup team). All that said, I think the game winning goal was one of the finest team goals we've ever done - started with us winning the ball in the corner of our own half and I think nearly every player touched the ball before Cavallini kneed it into the back of the net.

  35. Nice to have players actually doing combinations in the attacking third. I haven't seen that forever from Canada. Teibert and Larin were a noticable drop in offensive quality when they came on.

  36. This ^ 100%. I honestly don't think, any other player on the field last night or any other one of our CMNT pulls a hissy fit. If anyone deserved a minor hissy fit, it would have been Cav sitting on a potential hat trick, when he likely would have had a few more chances. What does Cav do? Looks slightly disappointed for 2 seconds, but immediately high fives a few teammates, salutes crowd, give props to Herdman and players on the bench, cely's with teammates and fans post game. I'll support Osorio regardless but hopefully that can be addressed asap, it simply should not happen.

  37. No please don't stop posting or being involved here :). I admire your passion and pride for our country, and respect the support you show to your son (as a Father myself). In my opinion parents and positive role models can have a huge positive impact on someone's success. As someone mentioned above, just avoid the very minor public criticism, that's all, but plz don't leave. Cheers and safe travels back to Europe.

  39. I blame borjan 110% for the goal. He had multiple chances to clear it but wanted to be fancy. Deservedly embarrassed and hopefully got a rollicking. Piette did some great things today. Dominating tackles and dispossesions we know he is capable of. I think like borjan though he also got too comfortable and on more than a few occasions got caught trying for fancy and full on dispossesions where the opposition simply got by him and left him lunging. That put us under pressure with him 3 or 4 feet behind trying to catch up. I don't think these are lapses or concentration or more likely over confidence we would see against better opposition.

  41. He did great. Didnt Zambrano play him there? He was gassed by the time he was cm though which was fair enough considering the shift he put in. Cemented his place for the summer with his versatility and from commentary seems he has a strong relationship with herdman. Love the guy. Please stay fit.

  42. Herdman has proved nothing yet. This Gold Cup qualification just means his job is safe until the next round. We’ll wait and see how he does at the Gold Cup. I’m praying Canada gets a Group of Death with Mejico, Honduras or USA, Jamaica or any other combination to test Canada against better opposition. If he crashes out in the 1st round, he deserves to get canned, but knowing thr CSA they’ll wait until WCQ is over.

  44. Just took a look at our roster from 2015. 9 guys that were on that roster will be playing in CPL this year. CPL might not contribute much to the MNT at this point, but it will be huge for our youth teams.

  45. There is a difference between being fiery and fierce for the team and being fiery and fierce because you are selfish. Maybe this is Herdman's first challenge as far as dealing with attitudes and personalities on the team. The question is how much of this is a momentary reaction and how much is it indicative of general attitude and what effect is it having on the team. When Osorio did this when Floro subbed him out while he was having a poor game, Floro did what most coaches would probably do (and for the most part are correct in doing) and stopped playing him even though we did not have enough quality in the midfield to replace him adequately. Now Osorio is probably not a starter if all of our players are available but is still likely good enough to start when someone is not available or we are playing against a team where his style is beneficial. It would still be a loss to not play him but not as big a loss as it was when Floro did that. It will be interesting to see if Herdman can get Osorio to change this behaviour or if not will continue to play him and try to minimize any negative effects on the team or stop calling him if it has a negative effect. On the other hand for all we know the other players may take it all in stride and say, "this guy is just too intense sometimes" and he might otherwise get along with everyone and there is no problem. But Floro thought it was a problem and if he is actually challenging the coaches authority and/or having a negative effect on other players then it is a problem.

Agreed, honestly the playing time will come this yr. Yes, he's behind Sagna, but Sagna is 35+ and I don't see Sagna playing 90 mins every game this season, especially with the travel, scheduling and games on turf over an entire MLS season. Let's remember he's now the understudy of French speaking Sagna who is arguably a top 5 RB all time for France. Pretty amazing development experience for a 20 yr old. As mentioned above Lyon takes it's player development very serious, top 3 clubs in world. This only helps us. Also, what's annoying is when ppl on here keep saying "French 4th tier" shouldn't be playing for us, without even fully understanding the French league pyramid. Anyways hopefully he stays fit and keeps developing, very exciting prospect for us.

  47. I was surprised to get back from the game and see the ragging on Teibert; I won't pretend he lit it up but for me he was fine. Piette wears the goal against in my book but worked like a Trojan to make up for it. All you can ask; everybody makes a mistake now and then. Saw David less good than others. Cavallini beyond French Guiana's powers; man of the match.
