    Herdman new head coach

I will wait until bad things actually happen before I start succession planning. At this point we may not have a lot of evidence of his amazing abilities when it comes to coaching the CMNT, but we also don't have evidence of any alleged incompetence. I am still reserving judgement until we hit the hard tests in the GC and CNL. At this point, scouting his replacement seems premature. And even if it turns out that he is a bit of a snakeoil salesman, the reality is that so far he has sold some important people the snakeoil. While other factors would be in play (the rise of Davies, the potential for a Canada-scale golden generation, WC2026, etc.) two significant young targets have been recruited under his watch. And yes, maybe he could do this just as effectively in a GM role - but we don't really have cause for complaint yet in terms of his role as head coach.

Every time someone posts a video or audio clip of Herdman speaking, it leads to yet another discussion of when it would be appropriate for the CSA to fire him. So bizarre.

I thought he was selling a time share in Nuevo Vallarta. In fact, I'm going there in a few weeks' time and I am anticipating getting this same spiel at the resort where I am staying. If not you, then who . . . are we going to be getting some more matches against (besides French Guinea)? How about a friendly or two against some higher echelon opponents? I want to "change the conversation" (a favourite TED talk phrase). Talk is cheap. Do well at the Gold Cup and I'll consider joining "The Herd." Until then, colour me skeptical.

The Gold Cup is right around the corner and that will be JH's litmus test. I was one of many who was shocked, disappointed and angry with the dismissal of OZ as our performance at the 2017 GC was significant re the attacking style that he brought, while advancing from a group with CR, Honduras and FG... finishing ahead of Honduras (!!!) to the QF. While the past 12 months have been a gift for any new coach, 4 games against weak teams, JH has made significant gains as follows: 1. Significantly more media attention and enhancement of CMNT brand. JH is omnipresent on TV, news media, podcasts etc... Phonzie helps re FC Bayern and Nike for sure. We need to increase the fan base and winning will help, but media attention is crucial; 2. significant gains with dual nationals - Tabla, Eustaquio and I am sure more are around the corner. He has also cap tied many of our top young players; 3. JH appears to be working closely with JDV re improving the grass roots LTPD in addition to working with the 3 MLS academies. This will be enhanced with the start of the CPL and in my opinion crucial for long term sustained development of quality prospects for the CMNT; 4. JH has complimented OZ for doing a lot of good work with the CMNT and setting the bar with a QF appearance in the 2017 GC; so he is setting the minimum standard for this year. There is no doubt our squad is much stronger now and we should perform well, but he is not shying away from that challenge. I agree that JH may have been better suited as a GM vs. coach, but I hope for the sake of the CMNT, players and all of us fans, that he is super successful, otherwise we will have missed a glorious opportunity with our "golden generation" emerging. It is difficult to judge our performance against weak opposition, but I am hoping that he uses the FG game to roll out a traditional line up, with players playing in their proper position and a meaningful formation etc. The time for showcasing our many attacking talents has to take second place to setting up the team properly for the GC. Wish him luck guys!

This has been the problem for over a year now - we have very little to go on in terms of on-field play. Off-field recruitment has been very good, but means very little if we play very few games with very little in the way of preparation. We don't even know how effective the motivational aspects of Herdman as a coach has come in handy when the team faces adversity, because we haven't faced any adversity yet because we haven't really been challenged. I'm not calling for him to be fired or even speculating on it, just that I'm in the "wait and see" camp, but am rather tired of being in that camp because of how our schedule has been the past 12 months.

Preseason Following a month of training in their respective cities, each of the seven clubs will continue their preparations in the Dominican Republic, beginning April 5, 2019, where coaches and players will participate in a number of on and off-the-pitch sessions. The CPL is working towards finalizing friendly matches with local professional clubs in the Dominican Republic and other parts of the Caribbean. MEDIAPRO, the CPL’s official media partner, will be in attendance to capture media assets in preparation for their production of all 98 regular season matches. New Sponsors The Canadian Premier League also announced Monday that Nike will be the official footwear and equipment supplier for the CPL’s seven founding clubs. This partnership, negotiated by Canadian Soccer Business (CSB) on behalf of the CPL, will have players wearing Nike performance football boots. The Nike Merlin will also be the official match ball of the 2019 season

Spruce Meadows would be the perfect ground to host a CanMNT match against a minnow, like French Guiana, in the future. Grass pitch, direct flights to Europe, and the ability to sell out (hopefully) vs a smaller opponent all are positives for Spruce Meadows.

Piette is a very good MLS player and could be on the move to a top league at some point. Any position on the MNT is up for grabs to the player who is playing the best at the time. There should be none of this replacement talk around here.

I haven't watched the video but lets be honest here, as far a coaches go, he's done nothing wrong until now. If they manage a point against French Guyana he'll have put the MNT in both Groups A of the Nations League and in the Gold Cup this year. That should be doable, a win would put them in the top 3 of qualification. After that, the games against better opponents will come.

It appears to be true as his father Ruben has congratulated him on his first appearance for Mexico with the u17s. Disappointing considering articles from the past few years have stated his desire to play for the Canadian program. For those on here suggesting that playing for an Arsenal youth team doesn't necessarily make you a better player than our homegrown academy products. Well, apparently it is good enough for Mexico (one of the best men's youth programs in the world). And to those suggesting that its not a big deal that we didn't invite him to camp as long as he receives a call up for the official tournament. Well, if that was also the case then we likely lost another player to the Mexican youth programs for the next several years. The only thing we can hope for is that he was invited to this camp and declined but it seems unlikely given the previous statements about representing Canada. We can hope he makes the switch for our U20 or men's side in the coming years ahead. Does anyone know about Rafael Pinzon. It seems odd that he is based in Mexico and not invited to the training camp in Mexico, particularly based on his success for Canada with the U15s.

I streamed the game today and David was not playing forward. He was more of an attacking mid, playing behind the forwards although he was in the box at times when Gent had free kicks and corners. When the other team was attacking, David tracked as far back as his own penalty area. His decision making is really impressive. In the midfield, he sees options as he gets ready to receive a ball and just makes the play. Pretty telling that in a close 2-1 game (3rd goal was in extra time), David wasn't subbed defensively.

I don't think people are actively checking this, but just in case, I was slow updating with last weeks results because I was on vacation with no internet access last week. I've updated the table now. With Toluca losing both it's games the MEX4 slot is actually in 10th place, behind PAN1. They will hold their position though and won't fall below the green line since the teams remaining in the tournament are all ahead of that spot anyways.

I talked to both Preben Ganzhorn and Jimmy Brennan in Sept & Oct of last year and York Lions Stadium was to undergo significant changes. Without getting into specifics, the narrowness was not going to be an issue and that knowledge and decision is likely a year old by now ... certainly nine months. Using Alumni Stadium temporarily was always the plan to accommodate the time it was going to take to do the necessary work on York Lions Stadium. Simply put, unless something else significant has occurred in the intervening few months, the construction timeline is likely extending beyond where it would be worth moving from one stadium to another mid season.

I don't think Piette gets the credit he deserves. He was one of our best players in the 2017 Gold Cup (one of the last times we actually played a competitive game) and game in and game out is solid for the Impact. We still haven't seen the best of him yet! (apologies to whoever it was that started that thread) I'm not saying he should necessarily replace any of those players above on the field, but he deserves to be added to the list, he is consistently in form. He just happens to be stuck behind Hutchinson.

If MLS can play in Denver on March 2nd, I think CanPL could have been a bit more aggressive than very late April and early May on its start date. Clips like this would help silence the soccer players are wimps types: which having grown up in one of Scotland's former coal fields where stuff like this is nothing out of the ordinary I always found difficult to take seriously:

    Ottawa CPL Club

The Impact have been sitting on Maxime Crépeau because he wasn't what they were looking for. They loaned him to Ottawa where he had an absolutely astounding year (watching him tear apart his teammates for their awful defending was the highlight of the season). He is now starting for Vancouver in MLS, which is leaps and bounds ahead of CanPL or USL. Ottawa fans are rightly proud of him, as are many Montréal fans. We still consider him "ours" - especially in the Franco-Ontarian community. He was a boon to the team, and the city. Why deny Canadian talent the ability to advance, simply because they have ambitions in other leagues? Why stymie our national team's development for the branding of a league that is not the highest level of talent in the country? Most importantly, why deny the fans of <insert market here> the ability to watch a quality player at a bargain price? Belgium is clearly a lower level than France next door, and yet tens of thousands tune in to watch. So I don't accept the argument that fans won't accept a "development" league. Especially in markets that MLS is not considering. CanPL is ALWAYS going to be lower quality than MLS, unless Canada's urban markets suddenly get super rich and populaed, attract 15k - 20k fans per game, in 20+ cities, and bring in Drogba-Rooney-Kaka level talent, so why not accept our unique market position and work with what is available? I don't get the "if you're not with us, you're against us" mentality of this board regarding MLS and the Fury... it's a loan, not a vassalization or declaration of subservience.

When you start designing rules aimed at one specific league... you don't get more "B" league than that. If that's the only way to allow an MLS teams to own a CPL team, it's best that you simply deny them altogether.
