The Gold Cup is right around the corner and that will be JH's litmus test. I was one of many who was shocked, disappointed and angry with the dismissal of OZ as our performance at the 2017 GC was significant re the attacking style that he brought, while advancing from a group with CR, Honduras and FG... finishing ahead of Honduras (!!!) to the QF. While the past 12 months have been a gift for any new coach, 4 games against weak teams, JH has made significant gains as follows: 1. Significantly more media attention and enhancement of CMNT brand. JH is omnipresent on TV, news media, podcasts etc... Phonzie helps re FC Bayern and Nike for sure. We need to increase the fan base and winning will help, but media attention is crucial; 2. significant gains with dual nationals - Tabla, Eustaquio and I am sure more are around the corner. He has also cap tied many of our top young players; 3. JH appears to be working closely with JDV re improving the grass roots LTPD in addition to working with the 3 MLS academies. This will be enhanced with the start of the CPL and in my opinion crucial for long term sustained development of quality prospects for the CMNT; 4. JH has complimented OZ for doing a lot of good work with the CMNT and setting the bar with a QF appearance in the 2017 GC; so he is setting the minimum standard for this year. There is no doubt our squad is much stronger now and we should perform well, but he is not shying away from that challenge. I agree that JH may have been better suited as a GM vs. coach, but I hope for the sake of the CMNT, players and all of us fans, that he is super successful, otherwise we will have missed a glorious opportunity with our "golden generation" emerging. It is difficult to judge our performance against weak opposition, but I am hoping that he uses the FG game to roll out a traditional line up, with players playing in their proper position and a meaningful formation etc. The time for showcasing our many attacking talents has to take second place to setting up the team properly for the GC. Wish him luck guys!

Piette is a very good MLS player and could be on the move to a top league at some point. Any position on the MNT is up for grabs to the player who is playing the best at the time. There should be none of this replacement talk around here.

I haven't watched the video but lets be honest here, as far a coaches go, he's done nothing wrong until now. If they manage a point against French Guyana he'll have put the MNT in both Groups A of the Nations League and in the Gold Cup this year. That should be doable, a win would put them in the top 3 of qualification. After that, the games against better opponents will come.

It appears to be true as his father Ruben has congratulated him on his first appearance for Mexico with the u17s. Disappointing considering articles from the past few years have stated his desire to play for the Canadian program. For those on here suggesting that playing for an Arsenal youth team doesn't necessarily make you a better player than our homegrown academy products. Well, apparently it is good enough for Mexico (one of the best men's youth programs in the world). And to those suggesting that its not a big deal that we didn't invite him to camp as long as he receives a call up for the official tournament. Well, if that was also the case then we likely lost another player to the Mexican youth programs for the next several years. The only thing we can hope for is that he was invited to this camp and declined but it seems unlikely given the previous statements about representing Canada. We can hope he makes the switch for our U20 or men's side in the coming years ahead. Does anyone know about Rafael Pinzon. It seems odd that he is based in Mexico and not invited to the training camp in Mexico, particularly based on his success for Canada with the U15s.

Curious if anyone asks critical questions. Lately we’re only getting together for official competitions at all levels of the men’s program, save this first u17 camp 1 month prior to qualifying. It’s a disgrace.

Put any other CMNT player on Cardiff and see if they are on "good form". We have maybe 3-4 other guys who could even keep up at the EPL level. The fact that they have gotten to the tippy top of the soccer pyramid and won spots in such competitive leagues kind of trumps any "on form" argument.

    Attendance Warz 2019!

On the way Swangard, to see either the 86ers or the national team, my friends and I would always shake our heads at the number of local games that were going on at the same time. "Look, you f***ers, your country's trying to qualify for the World Cup just down the road, and we're going to be outnumbered by [insert name of blue and white-clad Central American team here] supporters again!"

If MLS can play in Denver on March 2nd, I think CanPL could have been a bit more aggressive than very late April and early May on its start date. Clips like this would help silence the soccer players are wimps types: which having grown up in one of Scotland's former coal fields where stuff like this is nothing out of the ordinary I always found difficult to take seriously:

    Proposed USA competition in 2020

I'm in support of anything that gets Canada more competitive games. Even if players choose to rest or clubs do not release players, we should be having these games to develop a bigger player pool. Our current squad rotation seems to be between 20-25 players. The less games we play, the less new players we get to see and to develop.

How does that address the question? Saying they want something is not the same as guaranteeing it will actually happen. Good to see people are making it clear that they need to do something about this though.

    Herdman new head coach

No doubt. Herdman is the CSA's spokesman (to the chagrin of many here), so I'm not discounting the possibility that he's simply putting a nice spin on the situation, combined with his own plans for the team. EDIT: Remember that outside of one or two instances, neither of Floro or Zambrano's teams played two games in each international window either. This is simply a continuation of an established practice for the CSA.

There’s always going to be a place for Tesho I think. As a late game substitute attacking against tired defenders he is an excellent option for us. Tesho is a really good player. A few short years ago we thought Tesho and Larin were the future attacking options for us. He’s still a good player.

    2019 CONCACAF U17 Championship

It always amazes me why someone (anyone) doesn't ask the CSA why such and such a player was not invited to a camp (all levels). Why does it always have to be a big secret? If a player refused a call up I would like to know (as would the majority here). Thank-you thank-you very much.

    Jonathan David

I actually love the fact he's doing this as a CAM. I think that is a position which could be utilized in several different formations for Canada, as as a way to get our best XI on the field. Canada doesn't really have a CAM; Arfield can but I'm not sure he has the offensive acumen David does. And I think Oso, Esqui, Hutch, etc are more central midfielders.

    2019 Attendance

Its crazy because who know what? If this CPL thing grabs hold in certain markets it could get wicked fun, wicked fast, and that sort of thing is contagious and marketable nationally. Unless Wanderers are complete crap on the pitch I don't think it takes too much of a stretch seeing that club doing very well and imprinting themselves into Halifax culturally almost instantly. Venue may be just the right size to run up the numbers by aggregate, especially with a good cup run. Forge seeming to be doing everything right and if things turn out like it's looking like they're going to turn out Young's Boys are going to get a grand launch on the 27th, nicely pad their numbers from day 1, and carry that momentum going forward. I voted Forge. Half decent support in the Peg and Valour draw 5,000-6,000 every match. Decent support and you're not getting tickets unless they open up the east grandstand. And the calendar is on their side. A bit of effort and some good luck they have dates where they can fill the lower bowl. Don't know about York, Pacific or Edmonton but things are certainly starting to built themselves up around this league. I think EFC is going to have it's best attendance numbers ever, and by a fair margin to-boot. Here's hoping to it not raining all summer!

    Vancouver Whitecaps 2019 Season

I'll give you an example of what I call a high risk play from last night's game: a cross is played in at the near left post where Henry is located. Having to play it off of his weaker left foot, instead of opting to come straighter at the ball and playing it back in the exact same direction (the safe option), he went for a big swing of his left foot to clear it up the field. There's a lower percentage of getting the contact right and if you don't, you end up Titus Bramble-ing a mishit past your keeper at the that near post. Sure, you can nit pick, but I've seen enough of that over the course of his career. I don't think that's going to change.

    Dual Nationals Part 2 - Canada + ?

@Jmhutchinson Our region has developed leaps and bounds in the last 20 years without our help, I don't think we need to help develop our region at the cost of losing potential players. In my personal view, Canada's level in the last 20 years has been poor because our best players have been consistently poached by other national programs. And I'm not just talking one or two guys, so as a group we are sensitive regarding this topic. Further, our player pool is just not wide or strong enough for us to be encouraging fringe players to join other programs. Canadian players are notoriously late bloomers, so you must understand that we really can't afford to let anyone with any kind of international potential go to another program. I don't think you'll get much assistance here.

MLS made the decision to move away from player development to try to become one of the top leagues in the world years ago. Most major decisions made by the league since David Beckham have been to elevate the product on the field in order to make as much money as possible. Some of these moves have been - continual increase of the salary cap - expansion of the designated player from 0 to 1 to 2 to now 3 spots - introduction of Targeted Allocation Money While this has been fantastic for MLS in terms of growth on the world stage, it has been a great detriment to the USMNT. The CPL's rule requiring teams to have 6 Canadians on the field is the strongest move that the league has made to ensure this doesn't happen to the CMNT.

    CPL Season Schedule

I think we can all agree and largely knew before the release, that the schedule was going to be less than perfect. The league was facing numerous scheduling issues, and probably many we aren't aware of. As long as it's rectified next season,.....and I have no doubt it will be,.....I have no concerns and all is forgiven. Too excited about kick-off to worry about these things. Years from now, the crazy league schedule in year one, will be nothing but historical folklore. The only thing that could make it better.........would be Valour crowned as champion.

    CPL Season Schedule

Scheduling is a nightmare of a task. Anyone having done that for just staffing would know that, let alone a league that must take into account uneven teams, logistics, availability of stadiums, a farce of a CONCACAF league qualification and entering the Canadian Championship at different rounds. I don't think they are stupid enough to do the uneven split season on purpose. CONCACAF league (timing coincide) played a heavy hand it this and other factors made it harder. Year 2 should be different with more teams and no mid season, CONCACAF arbitrary qualifiers.
