They are especially good considering the sources of the majority of information are USL team owners and officials. So the league itself is quite profitable being supported by skyrocketing expansion fees. But for those expansion fees, an owner secures the exclusive right to continue

  2. I still remember Aird's MOTM performance against Scotland for us not long ago. Premier league players on the pitch. Frankly, I think Aird could play in the SPL no problem. It seems he is playing in a league below his level. Definitely scratched my head when he couldn't get an SPL contract after that performance and a decent run in MLS.

  3. BBTB stressing the soccer needs to be really good angle again? He is missing the point time and time again. This is about supporter's culture and giving people a local club to call their own. This is about watching local kids fulfill their dreams and play professionally. The soccer needs to serve a purpose for people to come out in the pouring rain. Yes, the quality does matter but if that was the main factor to come and watch, which it won't be, people would just sit at home and watch the EPL. If the quality of soccer was as important as he's making it out to be, TFC would have died afte

As far as I’m concerned, I don’t care about the Fury anymore. They’ve decided to play in a lower division American league, they obviously don’t have any belief in a Canadian Premier League, nor any real ambition. From what I hear, they’ve got pretty shit ticket sales, no prospects of a real TV deal, no signs of growth whatsoever, and no ambition. Cool, we don’t need them, and I don’t want them. Once the CPL is up and running, I think we’ll all see how little we need the Fury. I’m willing to bet that our clubs will be better by every verifiable metric, and that if in a couple of yea

  5. I see it differently. I think there’s a very broad talent pool that just latent below the surface. The issue up to this point has been that there was no way for the talent to reach the surface. We’re about to see 112 guaranteed additional professional spots this year and perhaps another 32 next year. The talent pool is about to bubble and churn and from that churn I expect that some real cream is about to rise to the top in the next few years. By 2026 I think a very large plurality of our players will likely have played with one of the 3 MLS teams or the CPL.

  6. You've completely ignored the point, for the sake of being antagonistic. Delightful People are aware of Aird because he recently played for the Whitecaps and he's had a couple good games for the National team. You know this. If he had 3 goals and 15 assists in the Portuguese second division he would be getting the same attention. Regardless, I don't think anyone is suggesting that they're getting automatic orgasms from this guy...

I think this thread is still relevant. We just need to stop talking Fury and talking about CPL and Ottawa without OSEG. I'm not hating, I'm respecting OSEG saying no. So Fury fans should respect that we start talking Ottawa in CPL without the Fury & OSEG

Because you know what goes on in my head? Nice try sweetheart. I don't care about your organization. Yes, the less ambitious option that you yearned for and can't let go. I never said the CPL doesn't care about Ottawa, but they're over the Fury and that club's decision to stay in the USL.

  11. A squad player in Portugal top flight should be an automatic Canada call-up. The drawback here is that he is not getting minutes, and he has a certain age now. So you could understand why he would not be quite automatic. There most definitely IS an Anglo bias on this board, many posters think players on scrub teams in lower tier Scotland should be automatically giving us orgasms, the bias is ridiculous at times. If Aird wants to play for Canada he should damn well find a SPL team. Or maybe League One. Because where he is, that is a mediocre level of club football.

How about we let the CPL put a couple of seasons under their belt and see how it does before we start saying that the CPL can do without a major city in Canada like Ottawa . I’m pretty sure the CPL at this moment in time before a ball has been kicked gives a lot of fucks about Ottawa and this Ottawa with ready made owners. However, I will say that if the CPL gets off to a flying start and has a very promising season I could see the CPL becoming very confident where they might not need to concern themselves that much with the Ottawa market for awhile and just concentrate on all its other market

  13. Not worth arguing the point of whether CanPL and VM want the Fury in. They obviously do. USL isn't perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but there is greatly enhanced stability and economies of scale that come with having over 30 franchises that are difficult to achieve in a Canada only context with fully pro level soccer due to the smaller population involved. Having the Fury around is going to be a constant reminder that there was another option available that could have been followed instead. CanPL will need to perform strongly for the question of whether USL might not have been t

CanPL were gung ho about Ottawa? The league has literally never talked about Ottawa since they opted not to join. All the commotion has been coming from the Fury themselves. We have a club that plays the victim and a league that doesn’t give two fucks. That should tell you something. Also, the CPL’s existence does not rest on this club and nobody is setting it up to be a scapegoat. The Fury is a two bit operation that only wanted to stay in the USL because they can’t function without MLS teams paying their players’ salaries, that’s it. They are visionless. They are not what this league wants o

  16. It's not a comparison of leagues. Aird is a kid with a lot of potential and a skilkset we are still missing in terms of taking dangerous set-pieces and creating scoring opportunities off crosses. Pacheco is nearing retirement. The same people excited about Aird would be over the moon if Eustaquiao opted to play for us.
    3 points
  17. Pacheco is 34 and has played 134 minutes this season. Aird is 23 has 3 goals, like 15 assists, and has played over 1300 minutes this season. The league someone’s team is in is not the only factor in whether they deserve a callup.

  18. Tomori went 90 mins at CB for Derby in a 1-1 tie against Bristol City. Tomori has made 20 appearances (18 full games ) in the Championship and 4 in the EFL Cup this season under Lampard. Derby sit 5th in the table due to goal average, tied for 4th on points; playoff bound. He would be a massive addition to our squad and is only 21

  20. I believe that's Aird's 15th assist on the season. It seems that he has really developed into a playmaker. I hope that Herdman calls him up for a closer look before the Gold Cup. Unfortunately with the lack of friendlies it may not happen.

Just a humble opinion of me as South American guy watching the bulls from the barriers. I can understand the economic interest of Ottawa Fury as a club to continue in the USL, avoiding the risk of being in a new league that is about to be released. Maybe the pressure of VM through Concacaf was not the best for Ottwa Fury to join the CPL. What surprise me most is the reaction of some of the Fury Fans in no supporting your own league, the league of your country, for God Sake Ottawa is the Capital city of Canada . How is possible to prefer playing against such as gray clubs as Richmond or L

Far from ideal, but also wishful thinking into assuming CPL will shut itself out of Ottawa in the hopes that the Fury comes around..."one day". Far from ideal but "competing" makes more sense than surrendering Canada's 5th biggest market to USL which limits the league's growth potential. The more CPL becomes successful, the more tools it will have to compete and win in such a scenario (sponsorship, TV, Champions league attached to the cup, more exposure, more media coverage etc...). Fury can hold back all they want but if they get sanctioned past 2019 against all odds, CPL will

  23. You are right in most points except owners or ownership groups. I think you simply do not understand we are not talking about hugely deep pockets at all. And less so if the move is taken with a group of owners, all putting in a share. In any case, I am sure there are sufficiently wealthy groups and individuals in Ottawa to run a CPL team. If OSEG ends up dropping the Fury, and the deal at Landsdowne is freed up (ie they not spitefully blocking anyone else from stepping in), we would see a team within 4-5 years, assuming the CPL is fulfilling its vision of moderate sucess and is holding u

  24. I mean sure, but it will be a short discussion. Will there be the Fury + another CPL team operating at the same time in Ottawa? A: No. Is there a place other than Lansdowne where a CPL team could play? A: No. Unless the CPL has absolutely no stadium standards to speak of. Could a new stadium be built? A: No. Ottawa already has a new Lansdowne as an outdoor stadium, and very few residents would accept public funds or public land being put forward to build a second one. If OSEG just drops the Fury, can another ownership pickup from there? A: I don't know of any other wealthy

  25. I like Aird because of the specific, unique traits he brings to the table. He is a classic winger who can swing in an effective, dangerous cross at pace. All those assists he has in Scotland aren't no look through balls, he has his crossing game down. He is not the kind of player you want starting a game, but if we are chasing a goal with 10 mins left he is exactly who you bring on to get balls into the box. Millar, Hoilett, Ballou, Davies are all excellent and have more tools, but aside from them, who else do we have that can beat a man and cross the ball? Ricketts? Aki

  26. You're lying to yourself if you honestly think there aren't bias individuals on this board. No one gives a fuck about Busti or ZBG until squad selection, but you all bust nuts over Liam's progress with Liverpool U18's and reserves. When ZBG captains the OL reserve team it's "he's still playing reserves, I think Godinho is probably the better option" when it's Liam with Liverpool reserves "Oh god! He got an assist, looks like I have to find a replay of this match! Future world beater!??"

  27. Presently I’m very excited about Millar and he’s playing for the U19/U23 teams. I’d be equally excited if he was on the youth team for a major club in Italy, Germany or Spain. It’s not about the league/level/country where he’s playing at but his potential and trajectory. Aird is still young and he’s having a breakout year. I did not suggest that this would make him an automatic call up for Canada but that I would ideally like to see Herdman call him up for a friendly (if we ever have one again) in order to evaluate him first hand and compare him to others who play the same position.

I think that they want Ottawa in CPL, not necessarily the Fury Except a few hardcores and Ottawa fans, no one cares about the Fury and USL. That constant reminder won't register with the overwhelming majority. You seriously need to stop exaggerating on that point. Again, just you and a few USL/Fury hardcores will be nitpicking about that, the rest of us will enjoy CPL for what it is

  34. Agreed and I think we can do all of the above for 2020. By all accounts, Saskatoon is in the mix for 2020. Quebec is a must. Hopefully more than one club from Quebec. So far we have heard about Quebec City, Laval and Montreal. The one city that is a sleeper that nobody is watching is Regina. Arguably the most successful professional team in Canada is the Saskatchewan Roughriders. They have been in existence over a century and have a massive, loyal fan-base that transcends the province, coast-to-coast. They sell more merchandise than the rest of the CFL combined.

  35. So people think we should call Aird back to the national team a guy playing in the second tier of Scotland, but a guy playing and starting in Portugal’s top tier Pedro Pacheco, no call for him to the national team? I guess the second tier of Scotland is a better level than the top tier in Portugal, it looks like the British or even Northern European biases on these boards is still alive and kicking lol.

  36. I think your most mission critical market to get into is Quebec. Having a team Quebecer's can rally behind besides the Impact I think is certainly something you want to pursue. After that, I'd be setting my sites on Saskatoon and getting a presence there. Just make sure you schedule games there to not coincide with the Riders.

  37. Fury Fanatic WAS using twitter to slag CPL, and it sure seemed like that info was being fed to him by staffers in realtime. He was clearly privy to info that only someone on the inside would have. The recent journo article, by an Ottawa based reporter, was extremely inaccurate and used Fury insiders as sources. The Fury publicly claimed that they didn't want to be forced into releasing their Camadian players as a reason to avoid CPL, and then a month later they released most of them. The Fury claim to be blindsided by the desanctioning move but the CSA was aware and their head

I wouldn't be too quick to write off Liam's chances with the first team. In the game against United, Rafa Camacho, a Portugese youth international was called up to the first team and was on the bench (Yeah, yeah I know that United are shit but it's still a Premier League game ?). The season that he has been having at the youth level doesn't seem to be a head and shoulders over Liam's performances. If he can keep scoring and producing with the youth teams, his time will come.

Could be the case but also there was a coaching change at the beginning of the year which coincided with a reduction in his minutes. The new coach, needing results, may have opted for more experienced players or simply just favored different guys in different positions. I have been causally following gent and it seems there has been a bit of shuffle in terms of who is playing and where they are playing since he arrived. There's another playwe I like on that team, Limbombe, who like David started the year very hot, but has saw a bit of a reduction in minutes. The good news for Da

I trust Alphonso and his family and agents to make the best decisions about his future and the way he is promoted. I find this a bit like the Herdman situation - we are finally getting some attention and suddenly we are uber cautious about how that takes place. For me it is pretty straightforward - the story they are telling about Alphonso IS his story. He is a refugee who overcame immense odds to have success. That is a huge commentary on him, his family, and to some extent (and here is my nationalism shining through) Canada. It is a great story and he is obviously okay with them tellin

I'm glad you are an expert on the Spanish 2nd tier. Cadiz has 12 midfielders on their roster and he is basically tied in 4rd place for most minutes. And they are in a promotion playoff spot. Only a DM, a wing and a CM have more. Seriously, it is one thing to be bothered about his play at TFC, another to simply lie and slag him gratuitously. He is playing at the same level as Hoillet was last year.

honestly, personally I'm okay with the way Gent is managing his minutes right now. Sure he might not always be starting, but he is still a young player and is clearly taking his chances well, making an impact when given play time. It seems that he is being protected, much like Davies was with Vancouver
