    General Discussion on CMNT

As the official Defendor of the CSA(tm) around here, I have a totally unproven, untested hypothesis: Generally the official match days are: late March, early June, early September, early October and mid November. In most of Canada, three of those periods are pretty rough going and I don't think many high-caliber teams are interested in playing in potentially inclement weather. Especially teams from warmer climates like Argentina, Brazil etc. That leaves only two matchdays: September and June. Every two years we are in the Gold Cup in June and in those years that we aren't the World Cup and the Euro are being played. This severely limits our potential opposition for that time period. The other issue we face is that the high-caliber teams most likely don't see any value in playing us. Yes, Brazil played El Salvador, but that was lucrative for them, financially speaking. They were also able to line up a second game that was only a LaGuardia to Dulles flight away. To play in Canada, we would have to arrange a second game for them that is an easy commute away and guarantee a gate that would be next to impossible. Also, Brazil and Argentina are the only big teams that really travel. Teams like Germany, England, Spain and France play most of their games at home, or at least nearby. None are really clamouring to travel across the Atlantic to play a team like us. Put all that together and that is why we don't play any games at home.

I disagree about this OM. We want to play to be in League A and we need to make sure in case a bad result happens ie a draw, that we have contingencies. We shouldn'T say well we will win all 4 matches. However, what happens if we don't? That's why I think we should bring our first 18 and sprinkle in some younger players in camp. Captieing isn't as important as it was 4 years ago with Nations League since we'll play an official match in the next window and the window after that and the window after that and that will be the case until next November. I'm probably one of the rare people here who thinks that captieing shouldn't be used as a strategy now. If the player's good enough to play on that night, he'll play. We have other windows. If we lose one player because we didn't captie him when he was 18, then he wasn't commited to the program. Also, it would send a bad message to the players on the senior team to tell them well we'd rather play a U22 team than you. We still captied 3 new players and got a result.

Looks like the match will be shown on TV on RDS (maybe RDS 2 if they have MLB playoffs on) from Loin de s'en foot's podcast. I'm guessing that TSN will show it as well.

Looks like a big result for him and shows the team is tough against a strong attacking Napoli. In other keeper news, heard today that this is Casillas' 20th consecutive year playing in Champions League, really amazing.

Growth requires investments... That is basically the number 1 rule in Finance. And in this case i think it takes more than just physical investments. In the soccer business, the number 1 asset is people, so I encourage a higher salary cap. You need good coaches and players to build a league, not just a good front office and stadium.

I have a simple question for you. I haven't been around the V's boards much over the past couple of years, so have missed much of the lead-up discussions for CPL. However, I've been reading much more over the past couple of months. Now, my question is this...is there any bit of negative information about the league, no matter how obscure or speculative, that you won't spin as irrefutable evidence backing up your extreme pessimism over the new league? Likewise, is there anything positive that you won't simply dismiss as being unreliable spin?

So, there is one more Machiavellian explanation for the lack of info on the salary cap: negotiations. Why let the agents negotiating contracts know what the amount is? The rates established this round will set the tone for years and this is the one chance to negotiate with players who have no real idea what the team budgets could support.

That bizarre outburst presupposes that a 500k cap would be a bad thing. Lower costs means teams should be less likely to lose money and franchises will be less likely to fold at the end of season one. That's a good thing and likely to enhance rather than detract from the league's overall longevity. A lower cap should also mean significantly more domestic content, which is the niche this league should be aiming for if it is going to help create a deeper pool of talent for the CMNT rather than becoming obsessed over whether my league is bigger than your league when it comes to comparisons with the USL. A functional and stable D3 type league in USSF sanctioning terms (and that can still be D1 for the CSA given the much smaller population involved and the presence of the three MLS teams) operating from coast to coast in cities like Victoria and Halifax would be superb for Canadian soccer.

Only Canada could be announced as a World Cup host and remain playing small teams. Who is the last reputable opponent we hosted (in a friendly)? Peru in 2010 (not a big teams even).. and before then? It’s crazy to see even small concacaf nations bring in big teams and yet here we are, one of the most multicultural countries on earth not hosting friendlies! That should be seen as $$$ for the CSA.. at least cash in.

Doesn't look like they will make that move this year but if the Fury again decide to remain in USL for yet another season next Sept then they very well could make that decision. I think the Fury knew for quite a while they weren't moving to CPL and delayed communicating that until the last minute and wouldn't be surprised if it happens again next year. Despite their narrative lately, they don't want to spend more on a roster and its not about salaries but instead they made a decision 2 years ago to pay $5 million to enter USL, a fee they may very well be paying over a 10 year period apparently. There's also termination fees in USL to exit. It will cost them to jump to CPL and they would still be paying fees to USL for years. In the end, they might have been better off to have stayed another year in NASL and left with a tiny exit fee there and spent 2018 preparing for CPL like FC Edmonton has.

The reality is that we don't have a friggin clue. There seems to be a range of $500k to $1.5M, and I am not sure any of us have anything like solid Intel to land somewhere firmly in that range.

I'm sure I read that Surrey will actually be bigger than Vancouver by 2030. Placing a team there makes a lot of sense for the long term. If we end up with pro/rel to a "CanPL 2", I could see multiple teams across the Lower Mainland, including the tri-cities (PoCo/Co/PoMo?)

Nah. Travel costs are logistics. If you're including that in your soccer operations you may as well include venue costs. Don't think that works in the contex which was being discussed. And besides, anyone think the league should be policing travel costs of the franchises if the league doesn't cover the travel costs of those franchises? Does it need to?

Just to add to your point: France friendlies outside of Europe in the past 20 years: Brazil+Uruguay (June 2013) Tunisia+ Reunion (vs China) (May-June 2010) Martinique (vs Costa Rica) (2005) Tunisia (August 2002) South Korea (May 2002) Australia ( November 2001) Chile (September 2001) Morocco (2 matches in June 2000) Tunisia and Morocco shouldn't be even considered like outside since it's pretty close and it's a quick flight from Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle. Two matches were in French Departments. A lot of matches were considered as prep for WC. (2013 a year before the World Cup) (in 2010, Reunion before going to South Africa because it's pretty close) (Australia because you want to give an idea to the players on the time it will be in Japan/South Korea) The only match that isn't like that would be Chile, but France didn't have to qualify in 2002, so they wanted to just find a good opponent to play. And it's possible that all the good European teams had WCQ to play. England: Brazil: June 2013 US: May 2005 (2 matches including 1 vs Colombia) South Korea + Japan ( vs Cameroon): May 2002 The US matches are interesting, but it was also in May when the season was over. I know what would work. CSA should play more home matches, but should let the visting FA pay for it. After all, that's how we make money, right?

Without proper definition of some of these terms that are being used by the CPL, DC and team reps it's impossible to decipher how much roster costs will be. That being said I think a player and coaching budget of $1.25M, which would represent 25% of the $5M operating cost number, would be reasonable.

I know. I made note of that. “The two competitions don’t always draw the best XI from MLS teams”. Note that I said both because the 2017 CCL results were mostly (or exclusively maybe, I can’t remember) from the group stage, which teams often play a weakened lineup.

Don't the Caps look much better and look like they are enjoying it more when they take the offensive. To look that good against one of the best MLS teams is impressive. Begs the question, why were we rolling over for so many matches this year? It wasn't because we were being successful. I don't understand the coaching decisions at all this year.

Meh ... I wouldn't get too worked up ... he worked in David, Cornelius and Millar, that's pretty good ... he got Cavallini and Larin "both" involved something past coaches didn't. The rest will come ... Rome was not build in a day and while I was previously suspicious, Herdman did follow through ... I think those other players will be introduced in the future ...I am going to sit back and enjoy the ride

I agree on that Teibert card, well taken. Have you noticed we are constantly on the wrong side of the ball, the team does not move into defensive mode properly and we expose ourselves to counters. As for Reyna, I am sure you are right, I have not paid enough attention. For me, our discipline problems, like 2 years ago, and a bit of this, have a lot to do with weak coaching and obliging the players to make things up as they go along.

The phrase "north of $1 Million" from Clanachan sort of reminds of "under $1 Million" from Shillington in that it is probably within a close range (ie 250K) of stated amount. It's possible we have something like ~750K player cap and ~500K for coaching, etc. That would be ~1.25M in total ie "north of $1 M" for all player + soccer operations(Clanachan) and "under $1M" for player salaries (Shillington). I just wonder travel is included in "soccer operations" or not.

But we do know for sure that there is a number, and that number is not in dispute for the people that know the number as the number is as real as a real number can be real. This is just the reality of a real number that some really real people know is indeed real. The number is not 7.

Although I agree that Bradley goes charging after the officials way too often and needlessly, in fairness to him on this point, having re-watched the game I don't see that he backed away from anyone, the official or Zlatan. Ibrahimovic inserts himself in between Bradley and the Ref and then Boateng starts to push Bradley away. You can see the whole thing here at the bottom of this Matt Doyle article (where they point out that Ibrahimovic doesn't in fact have more goals than Bradley has played games): https://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2018/09/16/armchair-analyst-zlatans-taekwongolazo-cant-save-la-more-week-29 Its actually the fact that Bradley doesn't back down which appears to have enraged Ibrahimovic so much that he spouted the " He should follow my rules!" stuff after the game. Still, I think you have to give the "Who is the more arrogant player?" award to Ibrahimovic in this case, which is saying a lot since we're talking about Bradley. I was reading the BBC report on this match and the comments section to the article is overwhelmingly negative to Ibrahimovic's comment about the pride of making Toronto his "500th victim" since everyone is pointing that he hasn't scored on 500 different opponents and the "victims" won the game. I can't imagine how much more negative the Brits will be if the saw "he should follow my rules!" comment and knew that in fact it was Ibrahimovic's own crappy pass which ultimately led to the game-winning goal for Toronto. Still, I have to say that I find all of his antics and comments enjoyable even if they are arrogant - so much more pleasingly so than say, Cristiano Ronaldo in that regard.

Jay Chapman now has twice as many career MLS goals as Russell Teibert despite far fewer appearances. I just mention this in order to start a pointless and silly "Jay Chapman is also better than Teibert" controversy on these boards now that the "Teibert v. Osorio" discussion seems to have died down.

Not to pile on here, but to keep assuming that York 9 and Pacific FC are essentially already in crisis because their deposit numbers are lower than the others is a little premature. We don't know what their marketing plan is, where they had hoped to be by now. It is way too early to make those kind of assumptions especially since all the of the teams have stated that they're in it for the long haul and expect to lose money in the first five years. Yet, so many of your subsequent assertions are based on the assumption which may not be true at all. It may end up being true, but it certainly isn't now.

I think the stability of USL and CPL are interesting. I'd agree that short term USL is the safer bet in terms of answering the question of "will this league still be here in 5 years". Then longer term I think the script gets flipped. If CPL is able to get through it's first few years OK and is doing alright (and improving) then I think it will be the more stable long term. The main reason for USL's success right now I think is because it essentially has a weird promotion system up to MLS. Once MLS hits 30 or 32 teams I'm guessing it will stop expanding (or maybe as high as 40, if they intend to have separate 20 team conferences that maybe play separate "balanced" schedules, only to meet in a World Series style championship at the end of the playoffs). Once MLS stops expanding, a lot of motivation would leave USL and I think it would rebound downwards a bit and try to find a AAA baseball type of a niche. At that point CPL would be more stable I would think.

Your theory is an interesting one, but as you say, is rife with speculation. The fly in the ointment for me, is that your assuming that Ottawa would be uncomfortable presumably spending a bit less, and still possibly improving in stature in a new national league, and of course that’s assuming that the CPL cap will be lower than their current expenditure of which I’m not convinced. To me, that theory doesn’t end up holding water because either a) the Fury would be able to lower expenditure and simultaneously be a better team relative to the new competition if such were the case, or b) the expenditure isn’t materially different and it has nothing to do with their decision. To me, it’s more likely that Ottawa doesn’t want to bet on the success of the new league because it doesn’t believe in it. Their calculus might be that their better off staying where they are because a brand new league is a high risk venture, and joining it would require them to leave a situation that they appear to be comfortable with. In my opinion, this is a serious miscalculation though. I believe that the CPL will succeed, it has realistic financial goals and it sounds like the clubs will be keeping overhead reasonably low for the first few years while the league gets established. If the CPL gets a national TV deal, which I believe it will (remember, their intellectual property, branding, and TV rights are bundled with the CMNT, the CWNT, and the Voyageurs Cup) then the Fury will quickly be left behind to rot in the ignominy of lower division soccer. What’s more, I’m also confident that within a few years, if the Fury don’t come around and ask to join the league, the CPL will find another Ottawa based ownership group to do so, and they’ll be the final nail in the Fury’s coffin.

According to a video interview with Jeff paulus, Fc Edmonton plans on running a U-21 reserve team in the AMSL. This is contingent on the academy gaining promotion this week. They won the first game 4-0 against Victoria, so unless they are blown out in leg 2 it sounds like we will have a reserve squad next year. Jeff says it’s a good place for players to train when returning from injury as well. Personally I think funding a reserve side at a decent level is the number one thing to look for in terms of player development. I am proud to be an Fc Edmonton fan as they extend their commitment to developing players even past the age of 18.

Last time we played Dominica we had 9700. That was for a World Cup Qualifier. This is for a competition no one knows what it is , or understands how it works even if they know what it is. I think we (as in us) will hit 1000+ tickets for this game. The line up will drive sales, if Herdman continues to call in a Caribbean island hit squad, it will help.
