The BEST roster we could ask for. Period.

For anyone who's been ripping on Herdman, this squad should cause you to give your head a shake. Canada needs to dominate to ensure their Gold Cup qualification is secured, and this roster reflects that. This squad contains arguably our best 11, with lots of opportunities to cap tie promising U23 players. And if you want pride in the maple leaf, note that Will Johnson and his "I don't like playing at the Gold Cup" attitude is not in the squad. Would have liked to see Stephen Eustaquio in the squad, but I think Zambrano ****** that up royally.

Steven Sandor has a good article on the selection, including this quote from Herdman on Ballou Tabla: https://the11.ca/herdman-sees-canada-playing-in-the-world-cup-in-four-years-time/

Well I can only assume if we had 11 Humes we would have won in 2012 in Honduras 11-8 instead of losing 8-1.

WOW. SO PUMPED! PROPS GUYS & HERDMAN, not being cynical, thank you to everyone who accepted the call, that's what I'm effing talking about! Even if it vs a minnow, this is an excellent precedent. Never been this excited. Should be a great way to build team morale, while building and creating a positive momentum.

Who starts at RB? Seems like Brault-Guillard is the only RB on the roster but it seems odd to toss him right into the 11. I really hope that Henry isn’t moved to the right.

    York 9 2019 launch/offseason thread

It's about the Canadians for me too. I got interested in soccer in 86. Started following every 4 years. Then started getting interested in the MNT and the World Cup qualification campaigns. I follow TFC now too. I live in midtown Toronto and will be happy to take the subway to see Y9 in the first few years. I can already feel my allegiance switching to CPL. Can't get enough of it and what it will mean to the MNT over time. I'm expecting the season opener to be Wpg at Hamilton. I plan to be there !

So they are bounced from Europa league. That's too bad, but he got the chance to play qualifiers and even scored a few goals. That's a fantastic experience for any 18 year old striker, of any nationality, let alone a Canadian. Great start to his European career! (Nothing can kill my exuberance around this kid - if you couldn't tell)

Anyone's guess but I don't want to see De Jong on the left of a three man back. Prior to the this roster announcement, I thought this team's personnel was well suited for a 4-3-3 but maybe they will go with three at the back

The question is whether they are really injuries stopping them from playing or just wear and tear which is what you seem to think they are. I also suspect they are wear and tear and Vanney is betting that keeping them fresh will help him win other games that he thinks are more winnable. Maybe it will work but my opinion is that this late in the season all the teams still in the running for the final playoff spot need to throw caution to the wind and do the maximum to win every game.

In the 18 man squad in a HUGE 2nd leg Away Europa League Match vs Bordeaux 0-0 aggregate. I expect him to be a 2nd half sub and do what he does best.

The Mayor came to the coach announcement and spoke. They are very invested and concentrating on the renovations to the stadium. What else do you think the mayor of the host municipality should be doing?!?
  20. 2 points
The only thing I can complain about now is that we only play 1 game. Where a squad of this magnitude would need 2.
  21. 2 points
Any chance we can get a last minute friendly against a half decent team to see what this lineup can really do?
  22. 2 points
They already announced end stands, one up close to the goal, the other further back. Sot hat is not new. And those renders: really poorly done, though if the architecture is like that, with neutral grey, clean stands with white roofs, the logo large like that, then they'll have really taken a step up. As is, the stadium is very ugly, it is terribly cheap looking, with bad colour schemes in blocks along the main stand, a logo on the stadium that is kitschy, the area around it very poorly taken care of. Encroaching buildings that look like wholesale radiator distributors. Even the Rugby Canada building is depressing. And that is also a testimony to this mayor, Mr. Young. In general, in public architecture in Langford, buildings are very poorly designed and you have to ask the guy: why don't you hire a quality architect, or just recognize you have no vision for such things and let someone who does? Will Pacific FC have the vision to tell that guy what is really needed to pick things up a bit and make the fan experience minimally decent? This basically looks like an illegal bazaar on the Star Wars Kessel Run.

Epic result. What a clutch save with 10 min to go. Canadian Keeper in the CL as a teams #1 starter. Pretty awesome stuff!
  24. 2 points
RB Salzburg were up 2-0 with 67% possession and 11 shots on goal and Red Star Belgrade managed to score two in the last 30 minutes of the game and win on Away goals Borjan has to be congratulated for his performance, a clutch 9 saves and some of them were crucial for the victory, what a way to end the CL Play-offs A Canadian in the most prestigious tournament this year!

They've pulled it off! Red Star are into the Champions League group stage. Borjan with a few big saves down the stretch to preserve the result.

I think the Caps tried it once or twice. For me, that was enough. The guy's at his best when he can be up the field more bending in those tasty crosses from the left, so perhaps he's best suited as a wingback?
  28. 1 point
We could very well stick to our usual 4-5-1/4-3-3 alignment. I just thought it was worth noting that playing intra-squad games (as The Beaver noted above) might suggest otherwise. I'm not in a position to comment on deJong's suitability to play in a 3-back defense (or Hoilett's ability to cover defensively in his spot either) but do know that James played on the right in a 3-back defense a fair bit last year in Hungary. Cheers!

Also didn't track back quickly enough on the play where Armenteros, arriving late, blasted it into Bradley's chest. That was the one that stood out more to me but didn't get punished. Obviously still learning his craft so he can file that away into the mental Rolodex for next time. He demonstrated lots of other good things out there.

Great roster. Perfect mixture of youth and experience!
  35. 1 point
Since this is not first hand information, I'd take this with a grain of salt, but what I've heard from multiple people is... Zambrano was on one of his "scouting trips" in Spain (aka an excuse to live large on the CSA's dime while doing no actual scouting) while Eustaquio was playing in Torreense. Eustaquio reached out to Zambrano to express his desire to play for Canada, inviting Zambrano to watch him play as he was nearby. Zambrano never bothered to get back to him. Eustaquio then moved to Leixoes and shortly after accepted a callup from Portugal. So either this is a prime example of why Zambrano was fired seemingly out of nowhere, or a perfect example of a Zambrano smear job on his way out.

No issues with the roster management considering a mid-week, non conference road match was always going to be the least important of the nine remaining. Same target as before: 12 points from the next 15 (aka win the home matches) and then see what you need to do in DC/Montreal.

It's a joke that he can't get the minutes he wants here. He was a breakout talent last year and all the confidence he gained from it is shot now. I understand he hasn't been the greatest when on but he's still by far the best option. Mancosu has been an absolute waste and amarikwa isn't the answer either.

I suspect changing allegiances from one club to another breaks some sort of code that Ultras are supposed to have, so this is probably a big fuss over something that's not particularly likely to happen. Beyond that they are even less likely to be welcome at a club that has a marketing strategy that revolves around the youth soccer minivan crowd than they are at TFC where they've never had to do youth soccer group sales because of the strong season ticket culture.

    Tesho Akindele

Still think this a great sign for Canada that a guy like Tesho is considered a fringe roster guy for a first team Canada squad...I dont think he stays in Dallas they've got some really good and cheap young attacking talent in the pipeline..hopefully he gets that worked out and is a guy who stays in N America and is a guy who can get called up for friendlies, League of Nations Games and depth for future WCQ's
