The rumoured salaries for CPL are about three to five times larger than average USL salaries. We don't know how accurate those rumours are yet, but if true CPL will roughly be as far ahead of USL by relative salary than MLS will be above CPL Welsh vs EPL is only a good comparison for understanding how one team can have two leagues. The EPL is the richest league in the world and the Welsh league plays in front of crowds in the hundreds. The gap between MLS and CPL will be orders of magnitude smaller Even if you place the entire blame of the Whitecaps choosing to fold their team onto the CSA (which is silly in my opinion, it was the Whitecaps decided to fold the team), you are talking about a single year where there are about 6 fewer starting spots for Canadians at a relatively low level. It's a stretch to me that one would consider it less of a risk for Canadian soccer to lose a handful of USL starters for one year vs disrupting the market for a new permanent CPL club that will not only likely have more Canadians on it, but are actually committed to the market and represents a much higher ceiling than a reserve team that is teetering on folding.

What would you rather have, a tentpole team in a Canadian league that not only will emphasize Canadian content, but one that will do so in a first-team environment and has ambitions higher than USL level, or a reserve team that played 6 Canadians and has really only contributed to the development of one player of note IMO It would have been nice to have both, but by the Whitecaps own admission they needed the team to draw substantial numbers to be viable and that means being a direct competitor to a key CPL club. I know I'd rather have a secure position for a key launch club for a key part of the solution for Canadian soccer than playing time for 6 USL players, which be immediately replaced in 2019 Plus, I'm personally not convinced that the decision to go to Calgary wasn't partially motivated by an attempt to preempt the cpl club, as they see Alberta as part of their extended catchment. They can pull the kumbaya card in a fan town hall, but they were the ones putting the message into the media that CPL won't be major league, which says more than what they say at a PR night with a bunch of angry fans who also support CPL

I watched the France vs Argentina game this morning and I can't help but compare Davies to Mbappé. The way they can scorch opposition backlines with their runs is very similar. Both guys have incredible potential.

    Stance on Qatar 2022

My stance is that it was obviously corrupt when voted upon and FIFA should have already done right by this and yanked it already. It's absolutely ridiculous they are shifting it to disrupt every single European league season. Never mind the atrocities taking place with migrant workers. Very powerful people stand to lose millions/billions if it doesn't happen but I hope some how it gets moved to a place that will need very little infrastructure to host (such as England who were in the bid for 2022). FIFA keeps pushing back a date to make a "final decision" on it which leads me to believe it's just a "we'll wait a bit longer.. a bit longer.. oh it's too close we have to host it here" tactic. EDIT: to address the question of a Winter World Cup. I don't actually mind it too much if leagues can figure it out but it makes me furious it's being moved because the host country was deemed unsuitable for the time of the year they were bidding on.

  12. I dont think he is a troll, and i love his enthusiasm. But if he took a little of time and energy he puts into posting and instead read some of the threads, or searched for a little on his own everyone wouldnt get so worked up. Most of us can have differing opinions on a lot of things without annoying 99% of the group. As far as Hutch, of course he is on the downside, but he still is a very good player. If he cant make a long term deal anymore at 35, I'm sure he can still drop to a lower league and play on if he so chooses. Selfishly I would like to see him come back to canada and get some of the recognition a CDN soccer hero like him deserves. Play a season or two in MLS get his face plastered all over the CDN media and make some money off local endorsements etc. He can be the new poster boy for PIZZA PIZZA instead of GIO.

I hope not I hate the penalty shootout. I rather they play a 30 minute extra time or even just 10 minutes before penalties to give the game a better chance of ending naturally.

Unfortunate that people can't find a way to work together rather than being at cross-purposes. Getting to 8 stable franchises would be a lot easier that way, if the funding that is going into the three MLS academies was used to full advantage by Canadian soccer rather than being viewed as an alien intrusion.

  34. Tigres for one.. no MLS backline is close. The fact is that any Liga MX regular could walk onto an MLS roster but not every MLS regular could walk onto a liga MX roster. Just look at the dozens of names that transfer between leagues for evidence of that.

    Lucas Cavallini

I have to butt in here and say that Liga MX defending is better than MLS. You don’t have to watch much CCL to figure that out.. watching TFC’s run it wasn’t even close. Most MLS teams don’t prioritize defence with their budget and while they may have 1/2 good defenders they never have a complete backline (case in point Toronto - we have maybe 2 defenders that would play in Mexico). You get a ton of average defenders coming here and “starring”. MLS defending has improved without a doubt but also lags behind MX.

    Cyle Larin

That "article" is trash. This just reeks of a typical lazy transfer window story. "Hey we need a striker and an article for the website, what about Larin he was good! We'll get some clicks out of that." Why would they spend all that time getting him match fit, have him score 4 goals in 4 games then dump him in the offseason for less money than they just paid for him?? Why would Larin agree to come back to MLS after all the baloney getting out? The last place he wants to come is back to MLS.

    Cyle Larin

The author's entire basis for Besiktas supposedly wanting to sell Larin is because he has "fallen out of favour", despite the obvious fact that he spent months getting match fit and only got his first minutes at the end of the season when he played in four of Besiktas' five last league games of the season and actually did quite well. Dallas may have made an offer for Larin but I don't see why Besiktas would want to sell him now, particularly if it's for significantly less than they bought him for last winter, as the author suggests.

    2026 WC Bid?

go to 4:12:20 Of course nobody will ever say: “i guarantee.....” or “we commit to....”. But that’s plan and if there wasnt a strong degree of intent, they wouldnt have stated the names of the cities. I am surprised nobody mentioned this here. But those videos show the V’s on few occassions. In one that i recall, it was where J Deguzman goes To the stands in the voyageurs section. The united bid’s full presentation starts at 4:03:00 the first video starts at 4:10:50 the second video at 4:16:30 Lots of canadian content in there!

    Atiba Hutchinson

Okay okay... Fact #1) Atiba is past his 'prime', but is still an effective player. Fact #2) Atiba would like to continue playing, and has contract offers from teams including Besiktas Fact #3) Despite Fact #1 and Fact #2, Tg11 suggested Atiba should just retire immediately. It's really the last point that derailed everything. I think people were just flabbergasted (including me)

  41. Anyone who's ever been involved with soccer in Atlantic Canada understands the level of respect for Stephen Hart. And that respect was earned over many years. But alas, I wouldn't expect someone from outside the region to understand.. ...looking down at Hart from his high Ontario-perch

  42. Damaged goods? He nearly took us to the Hex and played a role in getting T&T there. Is that not good enough for you? Who were you expecting? Zidane? We should want coaches like Hart to find a home in the CPL. Why would you scoff at the likes of him finding a home in our domestic league? The few people I know who have worked with Hart have only had great things to say about him - football wise. The nice guy thing is a bonus, I guess. And as far as Halifax goes, I could not think of a better choice. Halifax is home to Hart. Strange for you to be against this.

  45. No one thinks it will be. I just think it will be different. MLS, even today, doesn't have that grit, raw ability and passion when it comes to its playing style that you would find in smaller leagues like Uruguay or Croatia's first divisions. The sport here, especially in the GTA (and definitely in Brampton) has a street/inner-city level style that mimics the aforementioned countries. This is something MLS does not have and will be beneficial to us. To me, I don't look at it as "CPL will be less quality soccer", I look at it as CPL will be "different quality soccer" A quality that I find more interesting.

Finally joined up! I'm a soccer fan based in Victoria BC, so probably not a surprise that outside of the Canadian national team, I'm a Whitecaps FC and Highlander's FC supporter. Hey everyone. Happy to finally be here. Super excited for the direction football is headed here in Canada! I live 8 hours north of Winnipeg, but I'm seriously considering driving down for every single Valour FC home game! Oh, and I've started a Supporters Club for Valour FC (Valour FC North)! hope to see that grow!
