    Toulon Tournament (2018)

So Zambrano was good, but Herdman is not good enough because of finishing 6th. Lets just remember Herdman/Biello just finished 6th after playing Portugal, Turkey, Japan, and France. Zambrano lost in the quarterfinals (so equivalent to finishing 5th-8th) in the Gold Cup after playing French Guiana, Costa Rica, Honduras, and Jamaica. Alright then.

Bringing in Aketxe was the worst thing TFC could do with Osorio not sealed up. A guy making a mil can’t win the spot from him. Id have to imagine he could find somewhere willing to give him at least 4-500K especially in Mexico after he won the golden boot in the CCL. I think he’s be a great fit for that league too.

Fans should be showing up to watch Davies regardless of Robbo and the squad. Davies is carving Will Johnson up and has drawn numerous fouls and set up the goal and almost scored just now. His skill is catching up to his pace and pretty soon nobody who lives in Canada is going to be seeing him in person. He is the real deal??

It's more than an adjustment, they're replacing the current ranking system with a modified Elo system like in the Women's rankings. So the rankings will be much simpler with no averages updated monthly, just points being added/subtracted after each match. Nations' ranking points will be transferred as-is from the current system into the new one. https://resources.fifa.com/image/upload/revision-of-the-fifa-coca-cola-world-ranking.pdf?cloudid=jgxjkdrj1jfwyunjbkha Notably, there will also be different weights for friendlies played inside and outside international windows. Nations League group stages will be the lowest weighted competitions, but Nations League play-offs will be weighted the same as continental qualifiers and World Cup qualifiers.

Regarding pro/rel, I think something that Clanachan said got missed a month or two ago. He said when they reached 16 teams they would stop taking new expansion teams while they gather the requisite number of D2 teams to launch, which is a bit different than earlier reports of splitting in two once they hit 16. That's hitting 16, waiting for the minimum additional clubs (8?) to be ready to launch, then have a two tier system That makes more sense if they are talking about a possible 12-14 team first division. I don't think anyone thinks it's reasonable for 12 teams to split into two divisions I would suspect these are still ongoing discussions with nothing set in stone, but I don't think the "splitting" part was confirmed

    General Discussion on CMNT

Aplogize for arriving late to this forum.... I agree with many that it is extremely disappointing to not have the MNT playing exhibition games during these FIFA dates. I sends a wrong message to the players (nevermind the fans). It must be frustrating for players to see your US counterparts play France, and the CSA does not think it necessary to organize anything.

I can't believe he will be playing into his 30s given this exposure early on, but man I hope we all sit back and enjoy it while he is here as he is a sight to behold. If he continues to develop and stays injury free..oh my. He is on a trajectory to a big European club and soon.

I don't see how pro/rel between two divisions is viable at anything less than 8-8 in division number terms, so all he is probably saying with that is that it only becomes an issue when they are close to that numerically. Think this is probably just a stock answer they come up with to stop the zealots on this particular issue from hassling them all the time. How many owners who have paid a franchise fee to enter this league are going to vote to relegate themselves or risk doing so in future?

Well Will Johnson is definitely not our solution at RB, he’s getting burned badly by the Caps right now. Edit: Wow, taken off in the 40th minute. May be an injury.

Not sure why Carmine Isacco and Nick Dasovic tend to get a mention given they lasted about 5 minutes at TFC, while in contrast Jason Bent usually gets overlooked in threads like this despite the way he has hung in there for a decade now through so many front office and head coaching changes. He must be doing something right.

Canada vs Germany - Game thread

It was a new formation for Canada 3-5-2. Not sure if this is an experiment or a trial run for qualifers and WC. For Concacaf and against the weaker women's teams, this is a good way to go since we have 3 very good back liners. But we do need to inject more quickness up on top rather than have Matheson & Schmidt together with Sinclair. Need to have at least Prince, Huitema, Leon or Rose in there with Sinclair. Against good teams, the wingers need to come back to help which didn't happen too often in the 1st half today. And compared to the previous formation, the wingers were largely ineffective today while Germany's were running Canada all over the place in the 1st half. But our attack had a bit more variety vs mostly seeing wingers cross the ball. I like that Buchanan is stepping up into the play as that is the next level of progression for her. She'll make the wrong decision at times but others also need to fill in the gap when she moves up.

I'll mention someone I know, thinking of various roles. One is Srdjan Djekanovic, who after retiring in 2010 from Impact ended up coaching as an assistant at UBC, and then head coach at Kwantlen University in Richmond for a few years, until they cut out their athletics programs. He has coached youth as well. He is perfectly qualified to be an assistant or goalkeeper coach. The first player to play for all three Canadian teams, whether Caps in USL or the others in MLS. I would imagine we have quite a few people like this, with some experience on a university or semi-pro level, but with extensive pro experience as players. We have to know what it means to develop coaching staff as well, IMO:

This has been a bigger deal than the talent pool for the last few years. There's enough talent to compete with the top 6 in CONCACAF but they never, ever, frigging play.

    Alphonso Davies

You know when you watch a u-15 game and some of the players are boys and some are men? You know how the men completely stand out physically? That’s what Davies looks like in the MLS... and as we know, the MLS is a fairly physical league. It is quite impressive. As a side note. I am finding it very amusing to watch Will Johnson get embarrassed at full back against Davies and Telfer. Johnson is good, but man are our next generation of players so much better.

Probably will be Canada vs Haiti for Qualification to the U17 World Cup. Deja vu of the U20 qualifiers. Don't want to sound negative, but if we fail to qualify, what does it say about the much lauded EXCEL program.

    Alphonso Davies

Or maybe we applaud him for having the good sense to find some way to keep Davies on the pitch when the Caps are short a left back. I've never had the impression that Robbo wants Davies at left back. But when DeJong got injured--spitting blood--earlier this year, Robbo slotted Davies at left back, likely thinking that Davies was the best choice in that position considering his options. The experiment of playing Shea at leftback, keep in mind, is only two games old. It seems to be working pretty well so far. And when DeJong is back, we will have both Shea and DeJong to cover left back, leaving Davies free to play in the midfield where he belongs.

I have no idea if Besiktas would be good for his development or not. But selfishly I'd much prefer him in a league I could actually follow a little more closely as hes one of my favorite players to watch these days.

I really hope Davies has the right agent that will land him at a club capable of fully developing his potential. He is at such a crucial age and I sense that we are just seeing the tip of the iceberg as in yesterday's game. So many factors that can impact his development.

Considering the president of Concacaf was key in setting up the conditions for our league and has been trying to strengthen the region's clubs through more club participation, the news is not illogical. Except none of us thought we could go from one to 3 spots like that. That it says 4 even--well I don't believe that.

His game reminds me a bit of Ramsey with the late runs/goals. Osorio is a better dribbler, Ramsey is faster. Haven't watched much of TFC lately, but I think the biggest hurdle for Osorio is working on his defensive game, if he wants to take the next step.

Davies was amazing tonight, for sure, but the entire team has been playing more cohesive football as of late, certainly over the last six or so games. Lots of messy football still, but the team seems to be getting better and better. Felipe brings calm to this squad, and calm is contagious. The Caps are better in possession in these last handful of games, and have done much to improve their defensive play, especially the last two games. I think Mutch, once fully fit, will make a big difference over the last half of the season. His distribution, especially over longer distances, is very solid. That is good news for a team that likes to play the counter. I know we like to criticize Robbo--and for good reason sometimes--but the squad seems to be turning the corner. They've got further to go, for sure, but I am pleased to see the positive evolution as of late.

If we really get to a situation with two divisions, and promotion, then it'd be absolutely amazing. You could make it 8 and 8. The first eight start in first tier, and get a guaranteed period of years in top flight. The second 8 come into the league with the incentive to promote. But hey, I have no idea if this division business is conceived in terms of promotion and relegation. Is it?

Sure cap tie every one but it'll prolly be another match for mostly local players since the foreign leagues will just be kicking off.

That's a very weak backline, but would be the best attacking team we've sent in a decade....even if Davies doesn't get released. With Liga MX in session and most of the great u20 Americans in/or about to be in Europe, we should really expect a strong showing. That roster is a few CBs away from being a legit contender to win the whole competition. Also forgot Verhoeven.
  41. 1 point
I would agree Huitema needs service to look good. She hasn't learned yet or will never be the type of player who can do it on her own. And this u17 midfield at least in the US match looks poor. There are no playmakers. They all look like defensive mids who treat the ball like its a brick. There are better ball handlers in the back line. That being said, Huitema had one break away chance and her shot was more in line with the u17 level than the senior national team.

I'm kind of surprised they didn't announce Hamilton with this group. Don't get me wrong, I'm not meaning to imply that there's some sort of huge issue and the whole thing is going to come crashing down, but it's got to be hell for the Hamilton fans to be still waiting when everyone else is out there. Especially when it would be a great opportunity to advertise the Hamilton team when you'll have 20,000 fans in their stadium tomorrow.

Besides Millar, Twardek, Pantemis Cornelius the rest of that team needs more time to develop. Mathieu Choiniere was fantastic and Julian Dunn was very good in this tournament. Might see a senior call-up in the next 12 months for integration. Daniel Kinumbe didn’t seem to get much attention but was very solid for Canada at left back. I expect we’ll see him continue to progress in the youth set up as it re-shapes.
