Having the ability to talk English and communicate well is a huge thing. While the former is really a bonus it's the latter what makes Zambrano a huge step up from floro. It's his demeanor, his enthusiasm and positivity. Not looking to our weaknesses all the time but accentuating the positives. It is a breath of fresh air that has translated to the pitch so far.

    CPL General

Some people in Canada knock the CFL but it has nothing to down with 8 teams. They knock it because it is not the NFL. People will also knock the CPL not because it has 'X' amount of teams but because it is not the EPL or it is not MLS. The CFL has is doing ok despite the naysayers and im sure the CPL can too. MLS also has lots of critics who point out they are not EPL and they do fine. If the CFL had 16 teams people would still call them Mickey Mouse because hey are not the top league. There can only be one top league and every other will have naysayers. Many of them still prosper.

Both Elva and Froese start for their teams. Elva scored the first goal! (0-1) at Kickers Stuttgart and Froese plays at Rödinghausen (4-3 ATM). EDIT: And a second one for Caniggia!

Tickets look to be moving well. They've almost sold all seats pre expansion. Looks to be a crowd of about 20k for tomorrow. Great for a friendly. 4 years ago we were getting 16k for wcq at BMO.

If Blackburn could spare their backup for a friendly being played half a world away, you would think Montreal would send their backup to a game just down the 401. I see what you mean though.

    Atiba Hutchinson

Great feature on Atiba. So funny to think now that when he debuted for Canada in 2003 JDG was a player he looked up to, when we've thought of them as players of the same generation for so long now. Back then, Atiba was a talented 19 year old kid who had just signed his first pro contract with a tiny club in the Swedish top flight while Julian was a 21 year old phenom playing in the Bundesliga.

    Canada's A team starting XI

For tomorrow: I bet Akendele starts with Hoilett on the left and Davies on the bench. Given that he wasn't at the GC, I think OZ will want to give him a run out and see what he's got. I bet Didic gets his first cap too.

It means they did a really poor job of recruiting players and have enough empty spots that they could even give one to Henry, who they have no intention of playing.

    The Importance of Jr. Hoilett

I would really love for Cardiff to promote. A lot of season left to play but they are top of the table thus far.

Actually happy about this. Love me some Andre Blake. Side note I'm bringing my GF to her first game so I'm excited. My last game was the friendly against Jamaica in 2014. Hoping for a great showing. I'm 2-0 so far for Canada so if they win again tonight I may have powers.

thats very unfair tho in that time he has been on loan 3 times and on each loan, he has been injured in less then 3 games with that club I feel like the opportunity has been there, just no luck/injury prone

The only people who knock the CFL for having eight teams are those who don't care about it and you're not going to win those people over or convert them anyways. So who cares if those people think it's "Mickey Mouse" If you join an American league you subjugate yourself to their rules (see MLS) and then you don't fulfill your stated mandate (not word for word) of for Canadians by Canadians. That's a big part of their marketing strategy, pulling on the patriotic heart strings per say. They'll launch when they're ready with a decent amount of teams and grow from there if things go as they plan.

He didn't play for England U-21s in their qualifier against the Netherlands today. So count that as 2 CBs ahead of him in his age group.

I'd like to have teams named after various cuts of meat. That way, late arrivals to the league get poor names. Hamilton Prime Rib or Winnipeg Brisket sounds way better then the Toronto Chuck or the Kingston Mock Tender
  41. 1 point
They are just yanking your chain. Of course it's meaningless, it is a "friendly" as opposed to a "competitive" game in a sanctioned tournament. But of course the "meaning" attached to any game we play is huge. I am sure that this one single game will decide the fate of: The CanPL The united bid for the WC The future of all our coaches, players and technical staff The future of life as we know it on this planet See how quickly that can escalate.

As others have noted, United is apt if two or more clubs (or cities e.g. KW) combine, otherwise it's ridiculous. I'm not even sure we truly need team names imposed on supporters. E.g. the club Toronto FC are referred to as TFC or the Reds. No extra official name required. I know this approach would be very un-North American so likely won't be widely followed. But, I'd be fine with names like Whitecaps for the waters near Vancouver, or Timbers for the forests of Oregon. Just not something like Columbus Crew. I still think Hamilton Steelers is a bad name. Let it be something like FC Hamilton and we can call it The Hammers.

Yes, Everton's an area in Liverpool. Everton were formed there, but moved when they split from Liverpool, so AInfield is actually more in the heart of Everton than Goodison Park is. I guess we just look at things differently. I always enjoyed finding out why teams were named what they are. I don't mean that in a snooty way, just that we like different things about team names.
  44. 1 point
Even though they were in existence for a short time, Ottawa's team had two names, which could be combined in their (eventual) CPL team's name. Also, since it's de rigueur to add FC these days, and you could throw in Athletic too, just in case, and since it's in Ottawa, it should be in both languages: Ottawa Intrepid National Capital Pioneers Athletic Football Club de Foot Athlétique Pionniers de la Capitale Nationale Intrépide d'Ottawa.

Retro original CSL names wherever possible with the Winnipeg team called the Fury so the quirky Roughriders thing that the CFL used to have can be done in soccer as well.

Not to get too of topic but I've see both Reece Oxford and Reece Burke play for West Ham and I think Burke is the currently the better prospect of the two. I do think going to Muchengladbach could really help Oxford as it did for Christensen at Chelsea.

What type of bias did/do you have on Latino managers that seeing him act like a normal person makes you have hope for the man? Are you surprise the man goes down swinging? Do you not realize that most Latin Americans have the idea that in a game, battle, etc that even if you are losing you go down battling to the end, trying to win even if its impossible. Having a Latin American coach will teach this fighting spirit that eludes Canadian players.
