    Alphonso Davies

He didn't take control of the game or anything, but he also didn't look the least bit out of place in a game against a really strong Mexican side - and for a 16 year old that is pretty damn good.

  2. It didn't take long for Davies to capture the attention of Tigres tonight. The crowd is booing whenever he touches the ball.

Assuming a big swerve doesn't come on Friday, I'm glad we have a coach in place for the Gold Cup. As well, I don't come in with any expectations (good or bad) on the appointment. But make no mistake, this hire won't change the fortunes of our national team drastically. Sure, the result could be a more attacking style of play, and rosters that don't have massive question marks, and starting 11's that don't have 5 CB's in the lineup. The talent pool that Canada has to draw from is the biggest reason as to why we fail in every tournament, at every level in the men's game. Until that changes, it's status quo in terms of results in my book. Unless this country has developed and cap tied some players with some real quality on the pitch (e.g. if Davies continues to progress as he has the last 18 months), we'll be sitting here making the same points when the next coach is hired.

  5. I keep thinking Ottawa would be great to try. They seem to have gotten solid support for the Fury, they have a new stadium, and it's within easy enough distance for travelling fans from Toronto and Montreal. Would seem to tick a lot of the boxes for things we want in a location.

  6. I don't know enough to forge a thoughtful opinion, but I'm very excited that at least we've gotten our man, can analyze his tactics, and hopefully we will see a more attacking style of play - for better, or for worse. While he may have never coached at the absolute highest level, I hope his time in different areas of the world will have done well for his exposure to different types of players and implementing different tactical styles. Being a Canadian football fan is hard enough as there's usually very little to look forward to, at least now the CSA have thrown us a bone and we can be excited to analyze and dissect something (I sure hope he takes set piece defending seriously )

How sad is it that I am pleased that we have at least hired someone who has actually managed professional match before. Prior to Floro, that wasn't a thing the CSA did, and I wasn't certain they would this time either.

Interesting that he does seem to be very attacking. Most of his teams have set records for goals scored/points. I am very optimistic.

If it's true that he is coming in now before the Scotland game and has not 2, but 3 camps to prepare before French Guiana ...my level of optimism has went up. The reality is... no he's not a big name, however he checks off a lot of boxes to what weve talked about that our coach should have (Latin American, MLS experience, etc). All I hope for is that we get our best available players for this tournamemt, and prepare to attack and score goals. We just can't go another Gold cup without scoring a goal, or playing defend90.

His resume isn't very inspiring, but we weren't going to be able to hire someone with an impressive resume. I'm glad we seem to have gotten someone before the Gold Cup, and presumably before the Scotland game even.

This is either extremely sarcastic or naive. Either way, get a grip pal. Zambrano had some success in the early years in MLS, then he kind of floated off into obscurity before returning as an Asst. at SKC. His last stint at El Nacional in Ecuador is the only decent work he's gotten outside of the US. I've got to say, i'm not overly impressed with his resume but i'll give him a chance.

We are in a unique position where we have some good attacking players (Hoilett, Arfield, Larin, Akindele), and perhaps the CSA decided it was the right time to bring in an attacking oriented coach. If we can bring Davies into the fold sooner rather than later, and perhaps Tabla as well, we will not only have some young, respectable attacking depth, but a coach who's teams have a reputation for scoring goals!

Some quick observations: Despite the obvious gap in quality between the Mexican league and MLS, it was apparent last night that the Caps are at the very beginning of their season while Tigres is in mid-season form. Skill and talent are one thing, but many of the Caps touches were the sort that do not happen later in the season. Lots of ring rust. Having said that, the overall quality of the Tigres players was significantly higher than our lads. Bolanos, once he is fully healthy and fit, is going to make a huge difference for this team. Too bad he was not yet ready to play a full 90 last night. Davies was very responsible defensively, which is damned impressive for such a young kid. He did not get free offensively, but had a few nice moments where he showed his class against top players. He was gassed by the 70 minute mark. Brek Shea has no touch at all, but he is a beast and defenders will not like to play against him for his physicality. But with Mezquida and Reyna and Montero in the lineup, and with Hurtado and Manneh also available up top, I would imagine that Brek will not see a ton of playing time as the season wears on. Team still needs a general in the middle, somebody like a Bradley who can destroy and create. Right now we have two destroyers, and that is very limiting. I see some really good signs so far this year, despite last night's inability to intelligently hold (and pass!) the ball. If the guys can grow together, get everybody fit, then all of these extra games and extra experience should stand them well later in the season, not unlike it did for the Impact last year. Mezquida needed to chip the goaltender on his chance, but despite that error I like what I am seeing from him in his handful of minutes so far this year. I thought he was one of the Caps' best players two years ago, and it is great to see signs that he is returning to form. He will make it very tough for Bustos to see the pitch this year. Bustos might be a bit more technically gifted, but Mezquida is very quick and has an amazing engine. Valiant effort, two big mistakes resulting in two goals, but the guys were disciplined and now have to head home and play for the win. Could be a fun game. I'd better get tickets.

Zambrano is almost for sure a better coach than Findlay is but I'm a bit sketchy on this guy having two games to get ready for a major cup. His record as I said isn't selling me on him as a someone who can just walk in like some other guys that have been thrown around. I've said before I don't trust Findlay's tactics but I do trust his knowledge of the player pool. I'm hoping the duo are working together at least until the Gold Cup is done.

  27. If you read the Philly article he started his second season in LA below par (2-3) and so they let him go. With the Red Bulls they missed the playoffs. He has suggested it might have been racial prejudice and the fact that he annoyed a number of soccer people in so-cal by starting his own elite u-19 league.

Down 0-2 going home. Aside from the own goal we played well. Davies was totally gassed when they finally subbed him. Good outing for him. Still holds onto the ball too long in the middle. We had 2 great chances and got zero goals. Ousted kept it close with several excellent saves but ya gotta score if you want to win.

Well, 2-0 down going into the second leg at home is not great, although not insurmountable either. The gulf in class between Whitecaps and Tigres was on display for most of the game though, and I think the result flatters the Whitecaps actually. Better finishing and it's 4-0 Tigres going to Vancouver. Whitecaps offered so little going forward, and spent far too much time defending. Shea was absolutely terrible. Montero was invisible. Davies looked like he could hang with Tigres, but didn't have much of an impact on the game. Jacobson and Williams looked out of their league as average MLS players against Liga MX calibre talent. Laba was clunky to start and gassed at the end. Mezquida blew the best chance of the night to get even. I thought Parker was the best Whitecap on the night, and Waston played well outside of his gaffe / own goal. Ousted was pretty good as well.

DeJong is not having a great game. Some sloppy fouls earned a yellow. Flubbed a clearance that led to a scoring opportunity for tigres. Has the responsibility of taking the set pieces but hasn't delivered anything dangerous. Davies is the real deal. So calm on the ball. I need him on the CMNT asap.

The atmosphere at Tigres is fantastic. Wonder what it will be like at BC Place in the second leg? Hopefully a big improvement on what we saw for the Red Bulls game given what's at stake and the quality of the opponent.

  39. I like this set-up as well, it'd be good to see the club's LF have an ongoing relationship with training coaches to ensure they continue to grow. Changes are already happening but over the past two years I've gone through the qualifications of the community stream and your description is fairly accurate. One thing that is wrong unfortunately is that there is no test at the end. Depending on the LF, training coaches could potentially be a wallflower during the courses and not actually be that involved and still get qualified (sure they could be an excellent coach but you see the problem). Conversely, when I did my level 1 in England each coach was individually assessed. Overall, I was impressed with the lecture and it gives me reason to be optimistic.

  40. Maybe you could simulate a season in real time for us. Post the match results on whatever weekend they occur in-game and we can follow along through the year. Might be something fun to pass the time.

  41. I think they felt that since the average lifetime of a player in their system was 3 years, it was a waste of resources. Better to call in a larger group for occasional training. I would suspect that they would just successively eliminate teams younger than Greg Vanney's kids (U11 currently).

    NASL Expansion for 2018

Let's take this with a grain of salt because his only source is a single unconfirmed tweet from a few months ago. It fits his world view so he has latched onto it like a hungry dog. Next he will inevitably tell you that the Flames ownership was only interested in the CPL when it was a joint venture with the NASL. His source on this one is himself. So Steadman, be patient and keep checking the CPL threads. If the rumours are true you will have a team in the CPL with great ownership.

  43. There used to be a team that played in yellow and blue with a really cool crest that played at Swangard. Then they changed leagues, changed colours and abandoned their crest for a 'logo' that looked as if it was drawn by a three-year-old.

  45. Sure you don't have to. You don't have to have a resume to get a job, but let me tell you, a good resume makes it much easier. Look at all the Manchester United grads that hang around picking up contracts. It's a good resume, even if the player is crap.

Confirms the interest from Liverpool as well as Robbo saying he's working to keep "Fonzie" from getting a big head. http://www.tsn.ca/soccer/article/superstar-buzz-building-around-whitecaps-teen-davies-1.692055 FYI for those unaware, he can't transfer outside of Canada or Liberia until after the 2018 season when he'll have turned 18.

    Voyageurs' Cup 2017

I am not counting my chickens just yet, but another more subtle hint in the news today is the Can-con rule. Perhaps 3 Canadians starting is going to be the CPL rule, and they want to keep it consistent in the V-Cup, and they don't want MLS teams to have an advantage over CPL teams.

    2017 Gold Cup

It would be nice if one was hired today. There'd still be time to get to know the player pool with friendlies. That's not going to happen as we know. Speaking of friendlies, I think we should strongly consider Texas as a home base for preparation. Ideally, we'd have 7 to 10 days worth of training prior to the opener, with 1 to 2 friendlies. Then we'd fly to new York for match 1. Fly back to Texas, and prepare for match 2.
