    Canadian Premier League

Hopefully this is the right thread to post this, as it seems to be the CPL catch-all. If not please move accordingly. Hey everyone, I just wanted to join to offer support and a few thoughts as a non-soccer fan. I've been following CPL news on here for a few months now. First, I'd like to lead off by saying that I would be incredibly thrilled for Canada to have it's own soccer league. In fact this may be the one thing that would get me to watch soccer on a regular basis is if Hamilton gets a team and the league goes off like many here have hoped. Ideally as standalone teams without MLS B teams, or even "affiliates". I think this country could use a bit more national pride in our domestic sporting endeavours, and need to get past the idea of being tied to the United States. I say this as huge CFL fan. I was never a football fan until a friend took me to a couple Tiger-Cats games, and then once I was done school I started buying tickets on my own, increasingly until this year when I bought seasons tickets. I think the same thing can happen with soccer. As people have seen in Toronto with TFC, once you go and have a great time you will want to keep going. And there are enough people who don't live in the "big three" that if they had the option of a legitimate, top level Canadian league team in town they'd go. I certainly will once Hamilton starts playing. And I've probably watched a combined total of one soccer game in the last four years. I'm sure there are many more like me that can be pulled in. I also think people will like the option of not having to cheer for Toronto, just cus they're the nearest team. I spent years trying to get into the Leafs or Blue Jays, but just couldn't make myself really care. But the Cats are MY team, in (kind of) MY city. It's a level of personal investment that comes from being local. One last note. I know it seems like an uphill battle for soccer fans in this country. But I'd like to say, as first and foremost a rugby fan, that I can only look on in envy at what you guys have.

What do you expect the CPL to be like?

I have more hopes than expectations at this point. Here are my expectations for the first 5 years. 1. Some number of professional soccer teams, all within Canada's borders. 2. Many new professional playing opportunities for Canadian players. 3. A Canadian team champion every year. 4. I will be ecstatic about it's existence, and hoping it continues.

From another rugby fan, welcome aboard. "first and foremost a rugby fan, that I can only look on in envy at what you guys have" You can say that again. Please feel free to comment on the 90° climb that rugby has in this country in the "off topic discussion" section. If the CPL is successful, I'm going to be envious of people who don't live in the "big three." I'd much rather watch a local team play in our own league than watch ten (plus one) guys in Whitecaps kits stand around on a pitch with a map trying to find a goal in MLS.

I mean realistically there is no reason not have a franchise in Moncton AND Halifax. It would actually make alot of sense travel wise not to have just one team in the Maritimes. Neither one would draw from the others market. It would also set up a nice rivalry. Best part is Moncton has a Stadium and Halifax is exploring the idea of building an 8000 seat downtown facility. Would make perfect sense to me. Ohh except one thing I guess Moncton would need a willing owner to step forward

    CCL Format Changes

Oh god I hope this isn't accurate. This is worse in my opinion. All I want to be changed for CCL is for them to use coefficients based on performance to decide how many spots each country gets, and for them to stop the ridiculous rule that Mexican teams and American teams can't be drawn into the same group. Without those the confederation basically just decrees a ranking of nations, and gives a bit of extra help to the top 2 of those decided to be the best. This new format takes things a step further by giving some nations a bye past the first round. No, no, no, a thousand times no! It even seemingly could have teams advancing from the first round despite being behind other teams that don't get to advance. That is assuming the 5 Central American teams and 1 Caribbean team are determined by the first round. Let's say, somehow, Caribbean teams finish 2nd and 3rd in the first round. So the 2nd place team advances, but the 3rd place team is eliminated so that lower ranked Central American teams can advance? Of course the more likely scenario is that the highest ranked Caribbean team is ranked lower than a Central American team that doesn't advance, but I went with the easier example, and it would be worse to not advance while being in 3rd place, as opposed to 6th or 7th place. What happens if/when the CPL comes into existence? Is there any mechanism to allow us to earn a 2nd spot? If so, does that 2nd spot go in the first round or do we bump a Central American team out of the final round cuz Canada? Come on Montagliani. You can do better than this! Take the tournament forward, not backwards! I hate this.

They need to be there because they've been to San Pedro Sula and they tied the mighty Belize. The 90 minutes that they kick a ball around is inconsequential next to the 5 days they spend preparing for the game. This is the perfect opportunity for veterans to share what it's like going into an environment like this and show them how to prepare and how to deal with the conditions. They would also hopefully educate them that we are not in a position to take any opponent lightly.

I was hoping for a BCL1, but I can easily "settle" for a WCL1. Would love to see more Canadian teams & academies going head to head at a high-performance level. At the very least, if there is a new Vancouver PDL-team, it'll give the Highlanders a new BC-derby. Great news in my books.

I'm still amazed we have the second oldest continuous SA(FA) in the world! maybe the giant should be emerging out of a thawing glacier. I feel like the CPL will have to involve as many people as possible, supporters, artists. community engagement/investment. socially responsible, things that endear people to them and set them apart. and of course, patience

with new people coming into the fold, I'd just like to point out - the internet has given all of us a way to communicate in order to make the league launch really special, all across the country. In a way that didn't exist last time this was attempted. We still have a bit of time, but I'd like to start tossing ideas around now, because 2018 will creep up on us faster than we think. There's lots to be (potentially) done between now and then. @Neil Koheil found this poster and it's been giving me a few ideas on how to coordinate launch so literally the entire country knows its coming(which should be the obvious goal) Basically, the idea it gave me was something along the lines of Gullivers Travels - sort of "Wake the Sleeping Giant" sort of idea. Could have a bunch of little guys running around with each provincial/territorial flag Thoughts?

    CCL Format Changes

Not a fan of this if true. CCL is a good place for Canadians on the fringe of the first team to get minutes, and this takes away from that. Personally, I liked the format the way it was from 2008-12, with the qualifying round and then 4 groups of 4, followed by knockout.

pretty sure Bekker's been making between 75-100k USD for the past three years. If he's been smart with his money and maybe living with roomates he should be doing okay. Rumor has it there will be a $1.5M Cap in the CPL... Bekker would probably be a starter so he'd probably be worth around 80K Canadian in the CPL. I'd play soccer for that.

    Aron Winter

What everyone is saying is that in a league with a strict salary cap and a lot of domestic restrictions for playing Canadian and mostly American players, Winter had no possibility of being able to build a team to play the style he wanted to play that could be successful against MLS level teams using tactics more suited to MLS style players. If he were able to pay more money and hire more foreign players maybe he could have made it work but given the clear limitations he had that any decent coach should have realized he had no hope of being successful with the strategy he employed.

Honestly, I expect it to be like an Ottawa game in the NASL to start, only with real rivalries and supporter section travelling, and slow and steady growth, culminating in absolute bedlam in a V-Cup one day. As far as television, I would like to see occasional games replace poker, dog shows and equestrian competitions on TSN2 or at least a consistent presence on local cable. I don't expect the full season to see national cable broadcast, and growing to CFL levels.

Yeah, the CFL fan will always have an inferiority complex. Mainly because, there are hordes of NFL fans who are only attracted to it by the glamour of the game and less the substance of it, and are always saying the CFL is no good and putting the CFL down.

Loss of the National Football Stadium

Depends which point. Yes on it being tough to find land in a downtown area, but that doesn't mean groundsharing will become more common or that its any more difficult to get someone to publicly fund a stadium. Hell, if it wasn't for Argos ownership being dicks 12 years ago TFC would be playing in the suburbs.

Loss of the National Football Stadium

Really? That seems pretty far fetch'd to me. The Argos season at BMO was done on Oct 15th. TFC then had three home games after that, the last being when TFC played NYCFC at BMO on October 30th. From that point onward, BMO saw zero events until the Grey Cup. If the pitch was in such rough shape, they had nearly the entire month of November, till Nov 27th (the Grey Cup) to resod it and fix any issues. In the face of two, potentially three major sporting events, (two which would be two of the biggest moments yet in TFC history) they opted to not resod the "hot garbage" pitch. An entire month of time, with BMO's sub-floor heating system, modern grow lights, and advanced drainage system with a literal spare field down the road, that they couldn't do anything about it. To say I'm skeptical, is an understatement.

I get the feeling. That said, I think something to remember is that MLSE didn't "get" soccer at first either. Even Beirne said he didn't get it at first. So did Fath It'll be a learning curve, for sure, but if they are smart they will do what Hamilton has been doing and hiring on soccer first type people as consultants. And it doesn't hurt that a guy like Beirne, who has a good track record at promoting supporters culture and authentic experience, in their ear.

Loss of the National Football Stadium

This is a joke of a response. I see you didn't once mention this was an issue when you beat the Impact, or when you had to play in Yankee stadium, The season that saw TFC do the best it ever did, you are going to blame the pitch. Get real. We all saw the field at it was in pristine condition after the Grey Cup and the grounds crew posted day to day on it. The reason for your cramping is the pitch? Give me a break. You mean to tell me, that you are perfectly capable of playing on Olympic stadium turf, and at Yankee stadium without seizing up, but somehow a still great pitch that the BMO grounds crew busted their butts to produce isn't good enough? Not once during the entire season was this an issue, but suddenly the spotlight is on you and the pitch is at fault. It's a joke and shame on you Sebastian for that pathetic excuse. You effectively destroyed a large swath of goodwill TFC and your team generated during that playoff run and damaged the growth of soccer in this country with that weak, self serving, pathetic excuse. You've given ammunition to every single critic who claims Soccer is a diving, whining, prissy boy game and have hurt any potential fan by acting like a child and not owning up to the fact that the pitch had nothing to do with your cold performance. You've also given ammunition to every single elitist snob who makes the sport look bad, by treating grass conditions as a more important factor then the fact you couldn't slip one by Frei, of which I'm sure that near goal was completely the fault of the pitch. Shame on you, and I hope you hear the same earful from Mr. Totera

Personally, I'd rather work on convincing those who could be interested in CPL rather than those who have no interest whatsoever. It's a waste of my time to engage those who aren't going to be persuaded. Think USL is a better option? That's fine. I don't. End of story. Think MLS is a better option? That's fine. I don't. End of story.
