  1. Fantastic interview with Benito Floro with a Miami radio station. Sometimes I feel we really don't appreciate his pedigree. No Canadian coach has ever understood the game quite like him, even under Osieck. http://fdpradio.com/benito-floro-el-futbol-es-un-juego-para-ganar/ Sorry it's in Spanish, both the article and the radio interview. A couple of highlights: The base of the team is the same for a long time now. He says he never sets up his team to defend the penalty box. He doesn't believe in parking the bus. Even when he has faced powerful teams. But rather if you

No idea what he is like as a coworker, but I really enjoyed the combo of soccer intelligence and experience that he and de Vos provided.

  3. I'm not making any predictions but it's time....time for one of our big guns -- be it Hutchinson, Arfield, Hoilett or Larin -- to come through and be a difference maker. Put up a brace or something. Anything FFS. None of this show up in SPS and just take the field. Take some positive action and make the Hex happen. LETS FUCKING GOOOOOOO

Anywhere that Henry can get some consistent minutes at a decent level, and not get injured, is a good loan in my books. I think the Danish league is a good spot for him given how his career has stumbled since signing with West Ham.

  5. What gets me most excited about having Hoilett in Honduras isn't his ability to create offensive opportunities, it's his ability to receive an outlet pass and draw a foul. That is a great quality when trying to kill off a game, or to relieve some pressure after some sustained time pinned in our end. It gives a minute for the players to catch a breather in the heat, and allows us to march our players up field and organize ourselves to give us a better chance to possess the ball for a while. I think that has the potential to be huge for us... provided we don't give up 4 goals in the first half.

  6. In no way do I think people give Floro too hard of a time. In any other nation, passionate football fans who are knowledgeable about the game would question many of the same decisions we do, as they are difficult to understand and go against conventional wisdom. At the same time, I recognize he has earned the right to make these decisions and I am okay with that until he fails to do what he has set out to. With that said, he was basically brought in for THIS game, against THIS opponent, in THIS circumstance; needing a result away against Honduras. If we don't get a result here he will deserve

  7. Because in part due to Floro and 8-1, we had less of this issue in this cycle. But instead because we have now MLS club beat writers and also overlapping club & national team supporters who first and largely focus on the players who didn't make it from the team they cover/follow. This overstates the importance of certain players and deemphasizes the national team perspective. For example, the original article on sportsnet on the roster announcement by John Molinaro was largely about 2 TFC players who didn't make it. No specific mention of any players from any other clubs who made it o

  8. I think we really underestimate how badly the Canadian player is prepared in this country. We are both tactically naive and technically deficient. Even players like Larin who are good prospects for us have never faced legitimate world class players or been in high pressure games. With all due respect to Sigma and US college ball, Larin never met a real player until he shook Kaka's hand in Orlando. In other countries young players practice in the shadow of Legends and against future legends. Going to international tournaments against top clubs and countries. I say all this t

  9. I think people give Floro way too much of a hard time. He can only work with the talent he has around him. Clearly, he wants players who are good, committed and understand his system inside and out. I think if we were to pull in Guardiola, Ferguson or anyone else we would still be struggling to get to the Hex because of our talent pool. We are getting better, no doubt but we are don't have either a. the depth of talent or b. the intrinsic understanding of a system and style of play that is ingrained in our DNA that many other countries have. I might be in the minority but I think if we make th

Horsens are recently promoted to the Danish Superliga and are doing quite well seven games into the season (2-4-1, 6th/14). It could be a great place for Doneil to get some minutes, but I'm not sure how easy it'll be for him to break into the lineup given that the team doesn't seem to be struggling defensively at all. In principle though, if he gets some minutes it could be a great move for him since if things don't work out in England, Denmark is a pretty good spot to get your foot in the door.

  14. DeRosario was the only one seemingly capable of creating anything, and Hoilett is very much cut from the same cloth. Junior is better at taking players on, DeRo was more of a threat from distance. I'd call it a draw. More importantly though, we never had DeRosario in Honduras last cycle. We will have Junior. Simpson to Arfield? Apples and Oranges I think. I think Simpson was closer to Junior and I think i'd give the nod to Junior. His game is just a little more dynamic than Simpson's was. It's pretty close though. As for Arfield, well I think he's an overall better player than Simpson wa

  16. If anything, I think it projects an overconfidence that we will pull through these next 2 games, or perhaps a fear of worsening relations with TFC if Johnson reaggravated. I agree that the decision can certainly be criticized, but the tin foil should go away

  17. Floro didn't actually say "not to" in his quote, that was added square brackets to the quote in by Squizz presumably from what he thought Floro was trying to say. Frankly when I first read the quote I thought Floro was trying to say that Johnson prefers to play even when he's not 100% fit (hence why he didn't call him) and I'm wondering still if that is what he meant. In the quote above the "not to" is being attributed to Floro, who's English is not exactly the greatest to begin with.. I don't agree with Floro's decision, but I can't help thinking that something might be inadvertently get

    2016 MLS TV Ratings

Week 24 ratings: https://ca.sports.yahoo.com/blogs/eh-game/the-great-canadian-ratings-report--no-post-olympics-slump-for-jays-or-cfl-224012426.html TFC v Montreal averages only 116,000 viewers, the lowest number I can recall for an all-Canadian MLS matchup. Not good.

  23. The one interesting subtext from reading a lot of the Honduran media stories (both in the news and comments on stories) is the general acceptance that if El Salvador loses to Mexico on Friday, they will bring the equivalent of a 2012 Cuba side to Vancouver. And concurrently that Honduras is going to get the living shit kicked out of them in Mexico (like every score prediction I've seen has been 3 or 4 to nil). I don't know if that's just the general pessimism regarding the team (if we made two straight World Cup and played in a bronze medal game in the Olympics I'd like to think we'd be

  25. Reflecting on this comment kind of brings back memories. I watched the Mexico-Canada game, along with the away game in El Salvador with a good friend of mine, he's a casual soccer fan. I convinced him to watch the Canada -Mexico game cause I said, "History with the sell out and you could watch one of the biggest results in Canadian soccer history" he is a big sports fan and agreed. His comment after the game was, "Mexico is a good team, we played decent but man our forwards and strikers suck". I took it personal cause I am a huge Larin fan. He basically said the same thing after the E

  26. Well its supposed to feel like 100 today in Orlando so at least that problem will be solved Everything there is what I want to hear from a manager...its just tough when you juxtapose it with the actual results on the field (in all fairness to Floro, the one time he opened up a bit we missed a bunch of sitters and got run out of Vancouver by Mexico). But I always do wonder if the mentality when we went into SPS four years ago was 'draw or bust,' because as anyone who's played any sport at a remotely high level knows, if you go in there with that mentality you're going to lose 100% of

  36. DeRo was one of the best players in the MLS for better part of a decade and Simpson was one of the best wingers in Turkey in his prime. I'm not sure that they were "nowhere near the level of Arfield and Hoilett". Tough to compare across leagues but both Arfield and Hoilett IMO are relegation premier/upper Championship level players. Not sure that makes them significant upgrades over the crop of players you've mentioned. But the ARE significant upgrades over any other attacking midfielders we have today.

  38. Lets not make this a bigger deal than it has to be. Johnson has only been back to playing games for a couple weeks ahead of our biggest game of the year. This is a reasonable decision by Floro. Johnson's best quality is that he's a tough tackling 90 minute workhorse, so this type of injury/ recent return will hurt his game more than, lets say a guy like Hoilett, who you can bring on for 25 minutes and can still bring his best attributes into the game.

  39. Looks like Johnson wanted to be there. And he feels like he is in good physical condition, didn't even speak with Floro. Via Molinaro on twitter. Too bad, I trust Johnson, he is a warrior. But. Floro coached Madrid so Dixon must be a better choice.

  42. I had a dream the other night regarding this match. It was 0-0 in the 2nd half. Then around the 75th minute mark, a Canadian player wearing number 14 (apparently names weren't on the kits again), who could have played for England, cuts through the Honduran defence and is alone 1v1 with the keeper. He moves to the outside to round the keeper and, in doing so, is tripped by the keeper. The ref signals to the penalty spot and gives the Honduran a red card. Number 14 steps up and scores on the penalty kick - 1-0 to Canada! Bags of urine litter the pitch! Up a man, Canada desperately holds on over

    Will Johnson (update)

For the record, nobody said that. I said " For anyone that just wants to come to terms with Johnson's exclusion and get on with their lives, just imagine that Floro is the sole reason for the dual nationals that committed under his watch." The point is, we don't know what has gone on behind the scenes in either direction. We don't know exactly why these players chose to commit to Canada, and we don't know why the other players are not getting called up. Someone mentioned that this is not the time to discipline players by not calling them up, and yet we say the USSF is giving Hope Solo a c

If we don't, I'll just move on to support any other CanSoc initiatives that need it, including the men when they are back in the Gold Cup. I've become a lot more zen about these things. Even though there have been noticeable improvements in a lot of areas in CanSoc, it is still a work in progress. So win or lose, I'll soldier on.
