Emailing HR about someone refusing to do the drone stuff?

...After a Canada Soccer analyst emailed Priestman four months ago to say they refused to spy on opposing teams’ closed training, Priestman emailed a human resources consultant on March 20, 2024, to ask for advice. Priestman email: “Seeking your advice and input here regarding this formal email on spying. It’s something the analyst has always done and I know there is a whole operation on the men’s side with regards to it… it can be the difference between winning and losing and all top 10 teams do it.”

So basically we got caught doing something that many other teams do, have done, or would do, and thus our punishment will serve as the deterrant to everyone else moving forward.

Because this happened at the Olympics and because French law was violated, FIFA were forced to act. If not for these circumstances I believe FIFA wouldn't have gotten involved, because they never bothered to lift a finger during our alleged spying against the men's Honduras, and presumably many other cases went unpunished.

Therefore, since FIFA doesn't, or at least hadn't, investigated and punished these acts in the past, there effectively was no rule against it to begin with. If you have a rule with no history of enforcement, there is no deterrant and you basically don't have a rule.

Everything will be different for every international team moving forward, now that FIFA stepped in.

How much do you blame Herdman for breaking a rule that's never enforced (assuming the allegations are true)?

And how much do you blame Bev for breaking a rule that wasn't enforced (until it was)?

Only if you view everything that Bev Priestman says as credible. How would she know that all of the other top ten countries are doing it? That could just be a mix of paranoia and projection on her part. It's something FIFA should investigate though.

I guess I could see that being the case, but has Bev (or Herdman) ever reported a case of drone spying to FIFA? It would be odd if she was paranoid others were spying on her, but she didn't bother to report it.

More likely I think would be projection in order to justify her own spying, but it would be very delusional to completely fabricate a story that "all top 10 teams do it" without an inkling of heresay, maybe from some other coaches or players. Where there is smoke there's often fire...

You're right though, it's highly unlike she has proof all top nations do it, but I sincerily doubt we are the only team engaged in some form of spying, because I doubt Bev is delusional to the point of making that claim without some kind of smoke....

Possibly though we are the only team specifically doing so with drones - that seems probable to me.

Additionally, proving spying is probably near impossible to do, which is why it's rarely (never?) punished by FIFA. You need to investigate and actually find the proof. Like I said before, had it not been for the ban on drone usage in France, this would have never seen the light of day.

exactly.  Minor league  morons.

I’m not condoning the practice but you would think the more savvy federations would go to a supporters group find someone, buy them a drone, offer them a few shirts and access to a meet and greet or tickets or something.  Problem solved.  If they get caught they’re just a fanatic.  Instead we have a bunch of clowns emailing about their indiscretions creating a paper trail showing the national team staff knew it wasn’t kosher and even have coaches doing the drone work.

There’s a big difference between “everyone does it” and what these clowns did.

I don't know FIFA's logic, but 6 points makes sense considering that it's the swing in points between NZ and Canada. Awarding free points to NZ might be unfair for other teams, so the way to remove any possible advantage for Canada with respect to NZ is to deduct 6 points from Canada.

Of course, this ignores goal differential, which we should be glad they didn't touch.

If they had made the Canada/NZ game a 3-0 forfeit, the standings heading into the final day would be:

COL 3 (+1)
NZL 3 (+1)
FRA 3 (0)
CAN 3 (-2)

In that case, a draw against Colombia would still not guarantee qualification: Canada could still be eliminated with a NZL/FRA draw or unfavourable results in the other groups.

So, as it turns out given results so far, the difference between the 6-point penalty and forfeiting the match vs. NZ amounts to at most a single goal in the last game against Colombia (for Canada's qualification purposes). Either way, if you win, you're in, and if you lose, you're out. Only potential difference is in case of a draw.

Except usually in a forfeit you don't get -3 points, you just get zero and the other team gets 3 (with a 3-0 win).

Wanna know something funny? When I posted the link to the decision, it wasn't redacted yet. I know the names of the analyst and HR person, heck I listed them in the post.

Funny how the media are on this 2 days late. When someone isn't feeding them things, they are too lazy to investigate what was publicly available for days. "BREAKING"... lol.

Pretty sure the CSA didn't have to turn over Bev's email. Its not like there is compelled discovery as part of this process and it pre-dates the Olympics be months. It definitely was a choice, which in hindsight might not have been the best one given the 6 point penalty (which I expect caught them off-guard, they were probably expecting -3).

FIFA said that based on the CSA's public statements they requested the emails and that CSA has a duty to collaborate. Blue's unprompted public comments totally fucked the women and I would be absolutely pissed at him if I were them. There is no reason to volunteer this shit while one of your national teams is competing in a major tournament.

Except that he promised us transparency from the beginning and that is exactly what he gave us.

He didn't know about this before? Marsch didn't inform him of drone behaviour during/after Copa? He really had no inkling about this behaviour at any point after he took over? He had to volunteer info during the Olympic tournament while the women are still competing? He has to glaze his new hire in the media at the expense of others?

If we were hammering Bev for potential willful blindness (before the e-mails came out), why are we not doing the same for CSA/Blue? Lots of questions from me...
