Match Thread: July 7, 2024 - Valour v Cavalry

Recommended Posts

Valour already into must win territory.  Today Cavalry, next week Wanderers.  Two teams, on points at least, Valour really need to get points out of.  On the field that's another matter and tougher ask.

Just a coule more goals here and there and Cavalry would be nearer the top the table than the bottom and trips to Halifax are rarely profitable for Valour.  So yeah, good luck to us.

Sunday after' kickoff so the crowd should uptick some.  Maybe thundershowers, we'll see.

No injury updates in either preview article (Valour site and league site) so I suspect it's status quo regarding the two long-term wounded (Polisi and Williams).

Do the new Quebec players get in the 18? That would feel like quite the slap in the face to a few guys, I'm sure, but probably deserved.

Mentions Sanchez still injured, no update on Williams/Polisi.  Gutierrez and Brooks available for Cavs.

Would expect new Quebec players to knock Haynes and Hanson out of the 18.

pacific moves to 19 points and 5th is forge with 18 points 4 points ahead of cavalry and 8 points ahead of valour so they both badly need a win in their matchup later today

No Hundal in the 18... Not sure what this looks like with 3 midfielders. Maybe Verhoeven plays on the left where his one-footedness isn't such a hindrance.

Verhoeven right wing?

I actually like Dos Santos but he definitely has a weakness for ineffective, one-dimensional midfielders. Last year it was Polisi, this year Verhoeven. Always finding a role for the player despite any evidence they can be productive.

Not a bad effort by Valour.  Difference in the game was a couple of stops by Carducci and a goal Viscosi would like back.

How many games does Alarcon miss?  Campbell to fill in again?  Which screws up the midfield.

Did Ohin take a knock?  He was down shortly before being subbed off.  That would really kill the midfield. :(

Verhoeven and Sukunda did not impress - again.

EDIT... Campbell will miss the next game (vs HFX) due to yellow cards.

Campbell has been absolutely selfless and every single Valour support owes him a beer (not now, post season).  As bad as it is I can't imagine where we'd be at this point without his efforts.

Verhoeven.  Squad player who's efforts will never be enough to overcome his quality and put him into the starting 11 on one the this leagues also-rans.  His heart isn't the issue with the man.  You have to give him that.

Match was lost in the 1st half.  Had a half dozen chances which have to produce a goal and came away empty handed.  Damn my eyes.

Aird's goal well struck.  Carducci, speaking of your teammates owing someone a beer, had a pretty easy night except when it wasn't.  Then it was action stations, muskets and cannon balls.  Yikes.

For the 1st time in a while I was impressed with the crowd.  For a hot afternoon, which drove the crowd to the concourse, it wasn't a bad crowd at all.  Bit fuking annoying seeming like everybody in my section was going up and down the stairs beside me as they quit their seats for shelter.  It was what it was.

Quite the number of Canada kits!  There's always one or two but had to have seem 75 or more in all shapes and sizes.  Respect.

Despite the high likelihood of heat, with the seating area in direct sunlight, it does seem like Sunday late afternoon is the part of the weekend most likely to produce a decent crowd. I'm not sure if they can request more later Sunday games next year, but if they can, they should.

A that hour sitting everyone on the shaded west side would be nice.

I'm assuming they use the east grandstand for broadcast purposes and because that's where the Pinnacle Club is located, but don't know exactly.  But man, there's no doubt about it, there are periods in the afternoon where you have the perfect terrace for growing grapes.

And we aren't even into high summer yet.  What's the home run in August going to be like?  Ug.

Disclaimer;  My house is at the top of 104, right on the concourse, so we're well under the roof and allways in the shade.  For the 1st half anyway as we usually move down to The Trench for the 2nd.  So no one to blame but ourselves for that.
