Highlights from match.

35 player squad list for group stage were also released. Caps have only 22 players which means they can add players up to 44 hours before each match. Thorns are at 24 players, Wave/Santa Fe have 25 and Tigres with 31.

Once a player has been registered, they may not be removed or replaced. Two days before each match, clubs must select a maximum of 23 players from their 35-player list.

There are some Caps players who have deferred going to US college till January or next fall. Players like Hernanadez-Gray & Perrault have hinted at going pro.

Wave have a new manager. Casey Stoney was let go in June - has been mentioned as a potential Canada manager.

Well, now the Whitecaps have an idea of how much better their NSL team needs to be to be competitive in CONCACAF. It will be interesting to see what the Panamanian team (Santa Fe) will be like next.

It is not just the Whitecaps, it is a wake up call to the CSA and to how they choose teams for this competition. Because that was an embarrassment, especially considering who Canada are in women's football.

Next year, how will they decide the team representing Canada? Will they be able to do anything to qualify a NSL team?

CSA already announced it would be the League 1 Canada Inter Provincial champions from the tournament from a few weeks ago. Which Whitecaps won again.

For me the big question is whether they let Whitecaps use their NSL team for that.

I guess moving forward afterwards the spot will simply go to the NSL champs.

Personally I wish they created a Women's Voyageurs Cup that involved both NSL and L1 clubs

Santa Fe only lost 2-0 to San Diego in Panama. Thing may have been different if they didn't give up a very quick goal due to a basic GK error. And granted San Diego hasn't won a NWSL match since May, are the second lowest scoring team and it was their first match under Donovan.

So, both Santa Fe & Caps may have difficulty scoring unless there are blatant errors. Caps won't have Hernandez-Gray & Perreault due to u20 World Cup.

  • 2 weeks later...

I watched the Whitecaps game from about the 55 minute mark.  I can see that the team is very young, but I was still a bit disappointed with their level of play.  They really only had one play, and that was to hoof it forward and try to beat the defender to the ball.  It turned out to be successful a few times against their opponents, which lead to their win.  I am afraid that they are going to get slaughtered by the Thorns in their next game.
